The tour allowed us to experience authentic Bolivian food that we would have been unlikely to experience otherwise. Our guide was very friendly and informative. While the tour is titled food and beer, there was actually no beer offered at any time (although we did have a very nice Bolivian cocktail). The absence of beer did not matter to us but I do think the title is misleading. It also said the tour would take 3 hours, however, for us it was finished in 2 hours. This may have been because there was only 2 of us doing the tour.

Jose from red caps made our night in la Paz so special , he is such a genuinely nice guy and his knowledge and connection to food vendors amazing - love api - thanks Jose
We really enjoyed our time with Max. It was like we had known each other a long time. He showed us some interesting local cuisine and explained why each item was important. If you’re in La Paz right now you need to do this tour.
This was an enjoyable, relaxed tour with a friendly guide. It seems to me they should rename the tour because it’s not focused on beer. It was almost a side note that we stopped and picked up a can of beer to try. I also noticed that the drinks in the photos we’re not anything that we had. We had one small traditional alcoholic drink at the end which was good. It was nice to try a few unusual things that I would not have experienced. I’m glad I did this
My friend and I went on this tour led by Mateo and the tour was great! Mateo was very knowledgeable and created a fun and welcoming atmosphere. We laughed a lot, ate some really amazing food, and made a really great friend in Mateo. Would highly recommend doing this tour
We did 3 tours with Red Cap and enjoyed them all so much! Rem led one of them and was really knowledgeable and we enjoyed walking through the markets! Matteo led our other 2 tours and we absolutely loved him! He’s so sweet and clearly loves his job! He took us to the witches market and accommodated my vegetarian needs on the food tour (which is not an easy task). We felt like we learnt so much about La Paz on all the tours and would absolutely recommend them!
This was a fun tour with Matteo. We got to learn a bunch about Bolivian food and try a mix of street food and cafeterias and restaurants. My only wish is that we ended on something sweet (it was earlier in the tour). The food choices were all interesting and yummy and totally safe. Matteo was a lot of fun and spoke impeccable English. Highly recommend!
Might be great but our flight was delayed. We let the operator know but they said the guide would only wait for 5-7 minutes and then consider it a no show so we had to cancel
No prior communication after you book the trip, only instruction. We was 5 minutes late another group of 3 people from Spain was 7 minutes late Bus left according to local People At that point we still we didn’t got any phone call from the tour guide, To other companies, they are not reliable.
Make sure your stomach is empty when you do this tour as there is a lot of food to consume. Thanks to Mateo and his trainees for showing me some very interesting and tasty Bolivian street food and restaurant cousine. Also the extra information and laughter was appreciated. Well done!
Four of us did the foodie walking tour with Red Cap and we had a great time. Our guide Matteo (Matt) was fantastic and also had a wicked sense of humour. The variety of food available to try is great. Highly recommend!
Ate soooo much good food on this tour. Guide was awesome. Fun night out seeing the city. There was so much food but not so much beer
They ran a Beer and Food Tour on the eve of a national election. knowing that alcohol can’t be served during this time. The tour guide was monotoned and didnt really engage with the group. She also got free food at each stop, so did we go to each stop because of the free food for her or because it was really the best food? Overall the tour was very disappointing and misleading as they couldn’t deliver what they sold.
Our guide was really kind and joyfull! We had a lot of different food and drinks. Everything was so good! We highly recommend this tour.
Great food options from street food, cafe and restaurants. Food was explained to the group, its origins and why it was important. All the food was delicious. Our guide was friendly, bubbly and easily answered all questions.
Amara, our guide, was a great host! Very knowledgeable and friendly. The range of food we had was really good. My only flag is that the description of the tour makes it sound like you’ll try lots of different beers and drinks on the tour along with the food. We had 1 beer at the 4th stop and 1 cocktail at the last stop. This is more of a food tour than a food & drinking tour.
I wish I'd had a more enjoyable time on this tour, I love a food tour! I debated giving it rating of 3. It unfortunately just wasn't terrific - the guide was nice but not terribly interested in giving much information, and the spots chosen were just fine (and one was soup, which wasn't easy to split amongst strangers.) Maybe it was just an off night for the tour; I took another tour with the same company and it was great! :)
This was a fun experience and a great introduction to Bolivian food and culture. The guide, Matt, was FABULOUS! He's so enthusiastic, knowledgeable, and open to sharing what he knows and thinks of Bolivia. The only negative is that the meeting point is unclear. In the email, I was told to meet in one place, but the actual meeting point was somewhere completely different. Luckily, I contacted the company and they responded quickly.
This tour was a good intro to the food of Bolivia, taking us to places, and offering us dishes we wouldn’t normally have tried. Our guide had great English and shared lots of interesting info on Bolivian traditional foods and the changes that occurred to people’s diets with colonisation. Worth noting that there was no beer on the tour, despite the name! We were a little disappointed by this as we had wanted to try some local beers - but the cocktail we had was delicious!
A fun way to see a small area of the city and taste street food that you might otherwise not have tried. There was A LOT of food.
The guides Mathew and Marina were knowledgeable and fun. 5 different food experiences from street stall to restaurants and three different drinks. I returned to a few of the restaurants after the tour during my trip.
I think we did the food only tour. Had a nice evening walking La Paz and trying local foods. Learnt a lot about local culture and tried some foods we wouldn't have normally. Well worth doing
Matt was fantastic! The food was great and I learned so much on the tour. Definitely a lot of food so make sure you’re hungry! Thank you!
Great fun and a safe way to experience the food and street food of Bolivia. Like all these trips, the success is down to the quality of the guide and Matt was terrific - fun, friendly and informative - he made the tour a 5 star experience. Highly recommended.
The food tour was just okay. Unfortunately, I didn’t feel it was worth the price. The selection of food was decent, but there wasn’t much explanation or context provided. I had hoped to learn more about Bolivian cuisine and culture, but the tour guide didn’t seem particularly engaged or enthusiastic.
Marisol was our guide and she was fantastic. We started at the market and got introduced to Api and pastel - my now favourite Bolivian breakfast of spiced corn drink with crispy fried pastry filled with cheese. We did several other stops and we tried foods we would normally not have ordered on our own and they were delicious. She was very knowledgeable and answered all my tricky questions as I love cooking. I would highly recommend this tour and I think it was excellent value. I always love having a meal with a friendly local as you get a perspective of living in their country.
Marisol the guide was awesome!! The food was great and we even had a band playing music at the last spot! Highly recommend!!
Our tour guide Matt was awesome, he checked if anyone had food restrictions and made sure we were all comfortable with the dishes we were trying. I love that he explained the background of everything we ate and how the dishes differ from similar ones in surrounding countries. One of the places he had planned had run out of food so he was quick to shift gears and gave us several options to pick from to try instead. It was SO much food and it was included in the tour price which we loved.
Mateo (Matt) is a top notch food and walking English speaking tour guide. His explanations provide the helpful background of the many items that we tried. His knowledge of the local neighborhood and street and food vendors added to the food tour’s enjoyment. We sampled 5 different providers ranging from a street vendor, food stalls and local restaurants. Without spoiling the experience, the foods hit all the favorite Bolivian dishes as well as a beer and tasty cocktail by the tour’s end. Additionally, the walking of the local neighborhood by San Francisco Cathedral allowed your body to help digest all the wonderful food that you just enjoyed. Mateo is a 5 star food and walking tour guide.
Did this tour with guide Mateo. It was such a great tour, we learnt so much about Bolivian food but also about culture, history and politics of Bolivia. Mateo was an amazing guide and was so funny and interesting. We particularly loved the anticuchos! Thanks ☺️
It was an awesome experience with Daniel and Matt. Showing us the difference food and culture along the way. A few hinden jems that were surprisingly delicious. If you get a chance to be on there tour ur in good hands. Enjoy
I did 3 Tours The Good tour was My favorite! Great group to share dinner with and experience local cuisine safely and with company!
Alright then, gather 'round, because I've got a story about Red Cap Walking Tours in La Paz, Bolivia. Now, picture this: I've just landed in what feels like the highest city in the world - literally, not figuratively, because I'm sure there's still some place in the Himalayas that's got it beat. But La Paz? It's like stepping onto the set of a sci-fi film where the air's so thin, you think you've accidentally taken up smoking again. So, I sign up for this Red Cap Walking Tour, thinking, "How hard can walking be at this altitude?" Very, apparently. But let's get to the review, shall we? The Tour: First off, the guides. They're like local superheroes without the capes but with red caps - very subtle branding. Our guide, let's call him Max because that was his name, was a walking encyclopedia but with the charisma of someone who's been through the wringer of Bolivian politics and come out the other side with a PhD in storytelling. Knowledgeable? Check. Entertaining? Double check. The Sights: We started at San Pedro Prison - not exactly the best place for a picnic, but fascinating. It was like walking through the plot of "Marching Powder" but with fewer chances of getting shanked. Then, the markets - witches included - because apparently, in La Paz, everyone's into a bit of magic, which is just the kind of nonsense you need when you're gasping for air. The food tour part? Oh, that was a revelation. Imagine eating something that looks like it's been through a blender but tastes like heaven. And then, there's the cable car ride - or as I like to call it, the Bolivian roller coaster with less screaming. The Experience: Now, here's the kicker. These tours aren't free anymore, which is a bit like being told you have to pay for air up here. But for what you get, it's a bargain. You learn about the city, the culture, the history, all while trying not to pass out from the altitude. The Crowd: You meet all sorts on these tours. From the backpackers who've seen too many sunsets and lost their sense of direction to the retirees who think they're on a pilgrimage. Score: 8 out of 10 - because even though it's brilliant, you still might want to pack an oxygen tank. And remember, the tour ends with a shot of Singani, which might just make you forget you're in one of the highest cities on Earth... until you try to walk home. So, if you're in La Paz and fancy a stroll through the surreal, Red Cap Walking Tours is your man... or woman... or guide with a red cap. Just don't forget to tip - they're the ones helping you navigate this mad, beautiful mess.
My husband and I had an amazing time on the food tour. We loved all the food options that we would have never known to try on our own. We were lucky to have Marisol as our guide. She is very lovely and knowledgable. We felt so comfortable with her right from the start! Highly recommend experiencing while in La Paz.
This was a great entry to both Bolivian food culture and life overall as our guide was really knowledgeable, and answered plenty of questions with perfect English and a lot of knowledge. We started in the couple of food markets followed by a few restaurants while seeing the evening life of La Paz and learning about Bolivian culture. Nut soup was my favorite and had that again today. I'd recommend ordering a multivitamina without sugar as it's better that way. There will be plenty of food but to avoid waste you may tell the guide if you want a smaller portion or skip one of the places.
I’m really happy with this tour. Honestly, it could not have been any better. Not only was the food excellent and diverse, but also the tour guide is very kind and happy to answer any question about the food or the country! I can only recommend it, it’s the perfect start to discover La Paz and Bolivia in general. Kind regards from Germany.
On our second day in La Paz we went on an amazing food tour organized by Red Cap and lead by our guide, Daniel. On the tour we tried a lot of different foods and he showed us where to find his favorite food-spots. He was really nice and his English was perfect! Can highly recommend going on the red Cap Food and beer tour while in La Paz!
Great opportunity to try local food and drinks on the street, at a market and in restaurants. Local guide who was able to answer all of my questions and I left with a very full belly! I would recommend skipping lunch and pacing yourself on the tour so you can try everything!
Great tour! Remberto was a great guide and I got to taste many different dishes from street food to smoothies. A lot of food, no need to leave hungry.
I really enjoyed the tour - it was great mixture of typical street food and other typical dishes in Bolivia/La Paz region. It's definitely good to bring a lot of appetite, since there will be plenty of food. Other guide also told us interesting infos about the life in Bolivia in general. DEFINITELY A RECOMMENDATION!
Really good experience with the gastronomic red cap tour. Our guide Daniel has been very professional, smart and showed to me and my friend several real typical bolivian foods. This tour is highly reccomended
The guide was so friendly and informative, we tried a lot of new foods that I'd heard of but not had before. Only one other person on the tour which meant it was really cosy and fun!
Great tour with tons of information and food!! Make sure to go with an empty stomach. I really loved the tour with Daniel, he is very knowledgeable and fun, at the end of the tour I even had a chance to dance salsa. There was a free class in the last restaurant we stopped.
Amara was so knowledgeable and shared a lot of information with us above and beyond the food. The food was amazing and it was great to try local food. There was so much food so I would recommend sharing everything! The cocktail was a great touch
Amara was very knowledgeable about the food and the area. She was able to answer questions, and the choices of food and location for each "course" were incredible! I'm glad I didn't eat beforehand, as there was plenty to experience on this tour. I would strongly recommend it to anyone visiting La Paz for the first time.
During my stay in Bolivia, I was pleasantly surprised by the local delicacies that I tasted. Although Bolivia is not known for its culinary offerings, the food I tried during my tour was impressive. We indulged in a variety of dishes, from anticuchos at a street food stand to cocktails and picamacho at a nice restaurant in an upscale hotel. During the tour, our guide Max shared with us many Bolivian culinary traditions, including the fascinating Bolivian drinking etiquette and the origin stories of many dishes. Max, our guide, was incredibly warm and hugely entertaining. He even offered his cell phone/WhatsApp number in case we needed assistance during our stay in La Paz. Max's self-deprecating humor, such as having to support five wives and five kids, added to the tour's enjoyment. The Bolivian hospitality truly impressed us, and we left feeling grateful for the experience. If you're looking for a foodie tour in La Paz, I highly recommend the Red Cap Walking Tour, and don't forget to ask for Max as your guide.
We meet outside of the Cathedral on a Saturday night and were met with a thriving atmosphere of music and Easter food markets. Our guide didn't bother to acknowledge any of this and instead quickly ushered us past the fun and towards an empty restaurant, where we had a mediocre tasting sandwich. I was very surprised a Bolivian classic like Salteña was not included in the tour. Instead we had a meal at a Hotel restaurant. At another place we were comically asked to share out a bowl of soup among 10 of us, with just our own tablespoons to work with, as our guide disappeared for a smoke break. When she was present she would engage in very long winded stories while the food sat around getting cold. Most of the food was left uneaten. As it ended we were invited to stay for a drink, however the room could not clear fast enough. Very disappointing as I know Bolivia has more to offer for food but this tour did nothing to showcase that, and our very low energy guide did little to keep our group engaged.
Great variety of food and nice informative guide. We learned a lot and sampled 5-6 different food offerings from street food to nice boutique.
Four stops total. Two were great and two were average. We wrote some food/drink restrictions during booking but the guide was only aware of some of them, which caused some confusion at the end. We told the guide multiple times that we love spicy food but she kept asking for the spicy dishes to be made mild for us. Overall, an ok tour, not a big miss if you do not do it.
We had a nice time on the Red Cap Foodie Tour. The food was tasty and our guide, Marisol, did a good job explaining everything to us. We went to 4 different places and tried 6 different dishes and two different drinks and all were different types of dishes.
