I had booked this long in advance. I often drink tea in my country, but before this ceremony I hadn't found a tea I liked in Japan. I am not fan of matcha. I was exhausted that day and not really in the mood of joining a workshop. Nothing personal, I just had a bad day and my energy was really low (I have chronic illness). Anyway, I drank two cups of matcha tea and I actually liked it. They had sime sweets with which was reallu delicious. It was informative, calm and interesting. When I left the workshop, I felt like a new person (I can't explain why, maybe it was the calmness). My energy was back and I felt so much better. It is like the instructor and her assistant knew exactly what I needed.

Itinerary
The tea ceremony is a spiritual journey. All of our tea masters have a Tea Name.(that means having a full professor qualification.)At the beginning of the experience, the host will take you into the tea room to admire the hanging scrolls and flower arrangements. Before performing an authentic tea ceremony, the host will explain a little about the steps involved in the ceremony, the utensils used and the importance of the rooms decoration and layout. Guests will enjoy a seasonal sweet with their matcha while watching the tea-serving process. The experience ends with each guest having the opportunity to make their own bowl of matcha, mastering the basics of tea making. You can enjoy two bowls of matcha and enjoy two kinds of sweets during our tea ceremony. We value our guests’ experience and feelings and we strive to provide memories our guests will treasure.

This was a really nice and special experience. You could really feel like you were part of that house and family
What a great experience!! The translator was so informative, professional and kind, while the master was so fluid, graceful and put on a wonderful display. If you’re looking for a quality time at a tea ceremony, you’d be hard pressed to find a better experience.
Absolutely lovely, authentic feeling experience. With an English translator and a professor of the tea ceremony, who has been doing it for more than 40 years. Very welcoming.
A great way to get an introduction to the Japanese tea ceremony tradition. An experienced tea master performs a shortened version of the ceremony and a translator interprets what she is doing and then the guests try a fraction of the ceremony. It takes place in a traditional looking tea room.
A thoughtful and intimate traditional tea ceremony. The tea professor was so knowledgeable, and the translator really helped to include us in every aspect of the experience. A great option if you're looking for a quieter version of this classic Kyoto experience.
Incredible experience. I was lucky enough to be the only person at this time slot so it turned pretty much into a private ceremony. The host and her translator were both super nice, everything was explained in great detail. The Tea and the sweets were delicious. It was a super fun and peaceful experience. Probably the highlight of my whole Japan trip. This is absolutely perfect for anyone interested in japanese culture or just wants to experience something very unique. I will do it again when I come back to Japan. Thank you very much for this wonderful memory.
Such a beautiful experience, our interpreter was fantastic and it was such a treat to watch the ceremony, and to then try and make the tea. The sweet treats were delicious and something new! The whole experience was fantastic! Highly recommend, including the bus trip and walk around the little neighbourhood! It was a great adventure!
It was a wonderful experience where we got to learn the history of the tea and the different movements for the ceremony. We even got to practice whisking our own Matcha. It was a cool experience.
Beautiful tea ceremony in a quiet neighbourhood in northern Kyoto. Within walking distance from the serene Kenkun shrine and the famous Kyōko-chi pond. Attending the tea ceremony was a great way for me to learn about tea culture in Japan.
Simple with honor. Excellent presentation, tea & instruction. Lovely sweet with the tea service. Difficult location. Difficult stairs (would not have booked if knew this). Very delicious restaurant about four blocks away.
Very authentic and memorable experience in a traditional environment. The host was clearly very knowledgeable and experienced in her craft
We arrived a few minutes late because the location was a little tricky to find. We were made to feel welcome. Our Japanese host and her interpreter went through step by step explaining the ritual of the tea making process. We were then encouraged to make our own matcha tea. We enjoyed our experience.
Our host and translator were very knowledgeable and welcoming at the tea ceremony. I was able to learn a lot from them. What made the experience the best was how tasty the tea and snack were!
Traditional and educational, tucked away in Kyoto suburbs. A lovely experience that caters to the beginner with an excellent introduction to the formal tea ceremony and an opportunity to taste both the tea master’s craft and your own attempt to match the matcha.
Lovely experience, well off the beaten track. Very friendly and kind, excellent English. Everything was beautifully presented.
This was a great experience by the tea master! The setting was beautiful and we got to learn how to make our own tea!
We never realized the precision that entails a tea ceremony. It was very interesting. Sadly, we were unable to sit in the preferred position for the time allowed, but were made to feel comfortable and really enjoyed the ceremony.
The session was well organised with an English speaker to support the master who did the tea ceremony. All questions were well answered and you get a chance to learn to make tea too. I particularly liked this event because it was held in a private location and intimate in nature compared to the well advertised tourist experience which cost a lot.
This was a lovely experience to be part of this traditional ritual. The desert was delicious and the tea was tasty. It was short but sweet.
There's way more to matcha than your matcha lattes from cafes. This was an intimate, educational, and enriching experience. Whilst enjoying the local sweets and ceremonial grade matcha, we also learnt about Japanese culture and its customs. After the ceremony ended, the tea master patiently answered our questions. We also got excellent recommendations for local restaurants. I am so thankful that I did not miss this experience! 😄
Really enjoyed the tea ceremony. Very friendly and graceful hosts. We were shown the careful and watchful process of making and taking the green tea, and made our own. The taste was the freshest yet and it was a welcome break to be there
Absolutely loved this experience. We were able to both watch our host make tea and then make the tea ourselves. We also enjoyed a couple of yummy sweets. The english interpreter was great and told about the history. Also, for someone with sore hips, I had the option to sit on a small seat, which was very comfortable.
Despite my having lived in Japan for three years in the 1960s, I learned more about the Japanese tea ceremony in the hour than I had after previously Kearny attending a couple of them during my time living in Japan. Also, my daughter-in-law was thrilled by the experience because she is an avid green tea and matcha drinker. She too came away with additional information about the topic which has enhanced her subsequent enjoyment of green tea in all its forms.
Slow and boring, the room was on second floor with tiny narrow stairs, not safe. ,The whole thing was quiet and slow. Waste of time
Tea ceremony was good. The host explained in detail how to make matcha tea, showed a demonstration and let us make our own match tea. Host answered the all the questions and did not feel rushed at all.
The location was a bit difficult to find and not near Gion. But the experience was informative and enjoyable. They were very accommodating to my husband, who can no longer sit on the floor and made him feel welcome and included. We enjoyed tasting and making matcha, although agreed we need more practice as ours didn’t taste as good as the tea master’s. The assistant spoke very quickly and it was somewhat difficult to understand her.
Tea ceremony was held in a small house in a quiet, residential neighborhood area. It can be tricky to find so try to leave early to arrive on time. It was a nice experience to learn aspects of tea making and local customs. Would highly recommend doing at least once.
Amazing experience, we got there late due to traffic but still was given the full experience and we had the best time. Host was very gracious and answered all our questions.
The tea ceremony was good. The host and interpreter were friendly and it felt authentic. The matcha was tasty and watching the process was relaxing. The issue was that next door was a building site, with continual loud banging and drilling. If it wasn't for this it would be 5 stars. It's not the hosts fault, however when the experience is supposed to be relaxing the building work takes that away. I think there should be a disclaimer at the start to inform people if this is ongoing. They can them make an informed decision around attending or not. It did ruin the experience.
A gracious host and a wonderful hour learning this beautiful art of tea ceremony. The host was a delight and the English interpreter helped us to really enjoy the cere
Nice introduction to the Japanese tea ceremony. The tea master was very nice and the translator provided a lot of helpful context. Both answered all our questions. Overall a good time.
Great experience, very nice opportunity to get into the culture. Read about what the tea ceremony is beforehand (it is in the tour description) to enjoy it more.
The ceremony was enlightening to show us the traditions and methods of making green tea. I liked the small group but wished it was a bit longer.
Relaxed and informative demonstration, with an English translation. Easy to find using the local bus from the train
What a wonderful experience!! The host and interpreter were so warm and friendly. There was also so much history involved that I felt was critical. Further to this, they taught us the proper way for making the tea. I felt so relaxed and enlightened afterwards. Thank you so much for a fantastic afternoon!!!!
My fiance and I wanted to see and understand what went into the traditional Japanese tea ceremony. It was an enlightening experience where we were able to partake in some of the prepared morsels and matcha tea that we were able to make ourselves
The tea master was gentle and kind; my wife and I enjoyed the authentic atmosphere, the clear instruction, and the tasty sweets and tea. The translator was very helpful to get our questions answered
The traditional tea ceremony was a neat experience. It was a great opportunity to get an understanding of a part of the Japanese culture that isn’t mainstream as it once was. The women were so kind and welcoming.
The experience was great, Tea Master is absolutely amazing, as well as the assistants. Several questions were answred after the demo and the hands-on exercise What are you waiting for? Please go ahead with booking this Tea Ceremony event!
I loved the experience from start to finish, both the tea master and her translator were very sweet, warm and welcoming. I travelled with my young daughter who loves Japanese culture and who was very happy with the experience too. One thing I will say to people thinking about booking this experience, it is quite ‘out of the way’. I would not let this deter you because the experience is amazing, but I would recommend taking the subway to the nearest station (maps will be more than good enough to get you there) and getting a taxi / Uber from the station (it’s cheap from there, about 1,000Y which works out at about £5 GBP).
They were very kind and our entire party enjoyed the experience thoroughly. The sweets were delicious too
My family and I had a wonderful experience as we learned how to traditionally prepare and enjoy tea. The Tea Master answered our questions and was extremely pleasant and friendly. The translator did a wonderful job as well. Thank you for having us!
This was the highlight experience for my family vacation in Japan. The tea master was extremely knowledgeable and skilled. I would highly recommend this to anyone who wants to experience a wonderful ceremony with friends and strangers alike.
What a delightful tea ceremony. We really enjoyed it. Shiun An is truly a tea master and her place is perfect for enjoying the ceremony.
Such a wonderful experience!! Matcha tea ceremony with a tea master following all the traditional steps. Very kind and professional staff with beautiful Kimonos. Took great pictures and love it!
Had an amazing time with the tea ceremony. The host is very graceful and kind. Explained everything in detail and was patient in teaching us how to do it. The tea was delicious too! Highly recommend if you are a matcha fan.
Excellent hospitality. Very knowledgeable tea master. The sweets and tea were very tasty. Felt very serene afterwards. Would recommend.
Shiun An's tea ceremony was interesting and informative. We enjoyed arriving to a quiet neighborhood and a warm welcome.
It was a very lovely experience. If most of your Japan trip revolves around commercial shopping and eating this is an antedote to being shopped out. They were so lovely and welcoming.
