This was such a fun activity. I enjoyed learning about Taiko and getting to play a song. It is much harder than it looks. I would highly recommend trying it while in Japan.

A great and enjoyable experience to learn the history and art of taiko drumming. Our host Michael and ‘drummer’ were fantastic!
This is a fantastic introduction into the world of taiko including history and a demonstration by a professional - amazing! Michie, our guide, was a wealth of information and made our family feel comfortable and welcome. The instructor, who was also the professional demonstrator, was brilliant. He was positive, patient and very encouraging when teaching us the drumming piece. This is a must do when in Kyoto.
This was a wonderful experience from start to finish! Our guide and host Michiko was friendly, informative and professional and our Taiko teacher Aoi, was friendly, a great teacher and a super Taiko drummer! It was a really fun experience for our entire family.
The taiko experience was exceptional. It was a fun, cultural and instructive experience enjoyed by the whole family, a highlight of our trip to Japan. Akemi was remarkable and made this time a treasure to remember.
Meeting our host Mie was easy at Kyoto station and the train trip and car ride to the studio took less than 30 mins, very easy. The drumming was challenging for us beginners but we managed (with friendly encouragement from our instructor & Mie) to beat out a great tune! Highly recommend!
My first time in Kyoto visiting my Japanese friend . We loved this show ! The drummers and flutist were so amazingly talented ! They were professional and gave 100% of themselves during the show ! We felt so energized afterwards and took us awhile to calm down because you can feel the beat of the drums in your whole body . Really fun !
The Taiko experience was a lot of fun! It’s a professional drumming studio and the drums we are high quality … they make such a satisfying sound. The teachers led us in a structured yet enjoyable way. Highly recommend
This a lot of fun and gives you an appreciation for hard taiko is. Michiko was very engaging and helpful. The instructor was great.
Michiko met us at the train station and led us to the TAIKO studio. 1st we learned about the history behind TAIKO drumming, next, we got to watch a live performance, then it was our turn to bang the drums! We made our own headbands with KANJI characters depicting our hopes, dreams, and goals and after learning a song donned an official looking happi for our final performance which we videoed! The whole experience was so different and amazing, it is something everyone should put on their Japan experience bucket list.
Very cool and informational Very patient instructor makes it super easy to follow along
Ballad of the Taiko Drum Beneath the cedar’s patient shade, where incense threads the air, a father carved the living wood with ritual and care. He stretched the hide with steady hands, he tuned the hollowed frame— “Each drum,” he said, “is more than sound. Each voice recalls a name.” Oh hear the drum, my only son, it speaks where words are dumb— to gods above, to earth below, the heart becomes the drum. “In shrine and field its voice is heard, in festival and prayer, it calls the kami down to us, it binds the breathing air. The Buddha hears its trembling skin, its pulse both fierce and kind— it stills the storm in restless souls, awakens where we’re blind.” He placed the sticks in boyish hands, their lacquer dark and bright— “Strike not for pride, nor empty noise, but truth made sound and light.” Oh hear the drum, my only son… “But know as well its other tongue, one forged in blood and flame— on fields where men forget the gods, the drum yet speaks their name. It drives the march, it calls the charge, it seals the fated breath— and those who follow where it leads may walk the road to death.” The boy grew tall, his rhythm strong, his spirit fierce and clear— the drumbeat thrummed within his chest louder year by year. And when the banners crossed the hills, and iron sang its cry, he took the drum upon his back and would not pass it by. Oh hear the drum, my only son… Across the smoke, across the din, his cadence cut the air— it steadied hearts, it summoned will, it answered each despair. Men moved as one beneath its call, as if by unseen thread— the living marched more bravely on, the dying raised their head. But arrows fall as silence falls, and steel forgets the song— the rhythm breaks, the voice goes still, the echo is not long. They brought him home on quiet feet, his drum beside him laid— no war cry now, no rising beat, only the hush it made. Oh hear the drum, my only son… The father knelt where earth was turned, beneath the temple pine, and struck the skin with trembling hands to mark the sacred line. No call to war, no march of men, no command to the blade— but one last path of sound and soul through which the spirit wade. The rhythm rose, then softened low, like breath that ebbs away— a bridge of sound from dust to sky, from night to breaking day. Oh hear the drum, my only son, it speaks where words are dumb— go now in peace, beyond the veil, your heart becomes the drum.
This Taiko experience was a highlight of our trip to Japan! It was informative and exciting! The drums are fun to beat and we learned how to play a song! The host and Taiko professional were wonderful! I highly recommend this experience!!
The Taiko experience was wonderful from the first greeting to the last farewell!! Michiko was warm and attentive. Her presentation was informative and fun! The Taiko instructor was friendly and patient. Beating the drums was so fun and we actually learned a Taiko routine that was challenging and exhilarating! The Taiko teacher was a professional in every way! We highly recommend this experience!!!!
Amazing! Wonderful guide and instructor, excellent intro to Taiko, super fun practice and performance!
Excellent experience with amazing guide and instructor! Interesting intro to Taiko by professionals, super fun getting to practice and perform! Unforgettable morning!
I definitely recommend the Taiko drumming experience. Apart from being such a unique experience and great alternative to sight-seeing, it felt so genuine. We were taught a piece to play by an instructor who was phenomenally skilled and so it felt like a real privilege. At the same time, the instructor and all the staff were so warm and welcoming that what could have been really ddaunting was simply great fun. On the logistics side, we had to meet at Kyoto or Osaka rail stations which was a little challenging but Michiko, the guide, contacted us on WhatsApp prior to meeting and provided clear instructions so there were no issues. We had to travel on the train to the Taiko studio which was unusual but actually was a great way for the group to start interacting and swapping traveller tips as well as quizzing our guide, Michiko, who was very open and informative. We were then driven to the studio by the staff, which didn’t take long at all. Michiko then gave us a brief education on the drums themselves (a real eye opener and again a real privilege to be allowed to play them!) before a brief but stunning performance from our instructor. Michiko then acted as translator aide to our instructor as we learned and practiced a simple but very enjoyable drum piece, with plenty of mistakes and laughs along the way. (No musical experience needed, everything was broken down and clearly explained. It was quite energetic but all able-bodied people should be able to do it. It wasn’t too fast or anything.) It all culminated in a final performance which we were allowed to video on our devices if we chose to. Only trouble now is, how can I do this again when I go home?!
After our taiko lesson today, my partner and I immediately agreed that it was one of our best travel experiences ever! From the start, our guide was so kind and knowledgeable and fun to converse with. And our instructor was extremely skilled at taiko, and a very clear and encouraging teacher! We had so much fun and have been practicing our taiko technique ever since. Such a great opportunity to learn about Japanese musical culture and have a fun experience!
This was an incredible experience! Highly recommend for anyone interested in traditional Japanese arts! Getting to learn how to play a taiko drum was so unique and fun! Michiko was a wonderful guide! She shared a lot of knowledge about taiko’s history and the area in general!
The whole experience was very well organized, and we received support and guidance at every moment, even through messages. It was a wonderful experience! Our guide, Michiko San, was very kind and welcoming. Our instructor, Yusuke San, was very talented and attentive. Although it’s a short activity, it’s perfectly designed to offer a genuine Taiko experience — they make excellent use of the time. The group is professional and performs amazingly — but more than that, they convey so much joy and enthusiasm. Congratulations, Wadaiko Masaya!
Wadaiko Masaya provides a truly authentic introduction to Taiko drumming. Our guide, Michiko, from Viator picked us up in Kyoto and escorted us to the studio, then translated and helped us learn. Our instructor, Yusuke, gave us a history and understanding of taiko, then we saw a video of a live performance. After that, Yusuke patiently let us through basic beats and taught us an entire song. This was not a touristy type activity. It felt very authentic. Both of our instructors were kind and patient and we ended up feeling thatit was our best experience in Japan.
This is my 1st time playing and learning some very important information on Taiko Drums. I really enjoyed playing with the Taiko Drums. It also brought back memories on reading music notes for me. And in general I love Drums myself. I want to thank Michiko, Richie, and Aoi for the wonderful and educational session with the Taiko Drums. Arigato Guzaimasu for everything and the history of the Taiko Drums...what those Drums were mainly used for
Our tour guide Michiko was very fun and I felt welcomed and comfortable as she guided the group to the studio. We met at the station and had a short 10 minute drive. She did a great job in explaining the history of taiko and helped us pick kanji for our headbands. Her presentation was fun, interesting, and gave me a sense of deep respect for the art of taiko. Our Instructor Yusuke was very talented and kind. He gave us an amazing short performance that was inspiring and felt powerful. We then learned an easy taiko song together and phone stands were provided so we can record our final performance. The taiko playing was the highlight of the tour as I found that playing taiko is easy and fun with such a good teacher and encouraging tour guide. This is a must try if you plan on visiting in the area.
Our family of four with a 6.5 year old and 8 year old had a blast with Michiko as our English speaking guide and Aoi our professional taiko drumming instructor for a 1.5 hour experience. Michiko kindly met us at the Kyoto Central train station and clearly communicated with us via WhatsApp for a seamless pickup experience. She had already purchased our train tickets for us, and we took a train 2 stops to Takatsuki (12 min) and then the studio’s van picked us up for a quick 5km drive to the studio. They had enough drums for a class of 15 students, but we got lucky and were the only students for a private experience! The entire package was very well organized with an initial presentation on the history of taiko drumming in Japan followed by writing a blessing on a keepsake hachimaki head band worn during our lesson and final mini performance. Photos allowed during, and video only allowed for the finale. Staff was so warm and encouraging of our very first attempts at taiko. We like to think our children’s little bit of experience with piano and our self taught limited guitar and ukulele helped us pick up the song more quickly, but the truth is that they had a great teaching system with magnetic signs. The pieces were taught little by little with repetition and connecting it all together. I would recommend eating a snack beforehand with kids because we got picked up at 10:30am and wrapped up by 1:00pm for a late lunch before continuing our journey to Osaka. Water is allowed during the lesson, and my arms were definitely tired from the fun drumrolls. I was too late to find a reservation with Taiko Lab in either Kyoto or Osaka, so I feel like we won the lottery when we were able to snag a spot with Waidako Masaya, which is a local adult education school dedicated to professional taiko drumming with 100+ students. The drums are made from one entire piece of hollowed wood (instead of multiple pieces like a wine barrel), so each drum is extremely valuable and makes the most beautiful resonant sound! Michiko described Takatsuki as a “bedroom” city or quiet suburb where commuters to equidistant Kyoto and Osaka live away from the hustle and bustle. I was a bit confused initially since the Viator tour booking was titled “TAIKO, Japanese drum experience from Kyoto”…. not IN Kyoto, but it all worked out since we were planning to leave Kyoto for Osaka that same day anyways so we brought our luggage with us, which we could have easily checked in at the Takatsuki train station but they kindly let us store in their van (not normal!). They have bachi drumming sticks for sell for too. We would 2000% recommend investing in creating this special memory in an authentic Japanese drumming experience!
Michiko was our guide. She met us at Kyoto station & led us through the whole event. She was very informative & her English was very good. Despite our reservations about a "class" in Taiko, it was insightful of the whole process. And a lot of FUN! Aoi was a skilled performer and patient instructor. We are glad we had this experience.
This was fun! We aren't musicians and we were able to participate and follow along. Michiko met us at the train station and we took a short train ride to Takasuki and we were picked up by the taiko studios van. The staff were super supportive and encouraging. Love this experience! Thank you so much!!
Michiko-san was very helpful in translating in english the whole time. Overall very fun experience with explanations on the history and use of taiko drums. We were also treated with an impressive demonstration by Aoi-san.
Great experience! Our guide met us at the designated meeting point and provided a great tour on the way to the studio. Once there we quickly became immersed in the history and the method of taiko drumming. The experience is structured so that you learn a series of sections of a taiko piece and as you progress in the lesson it all comes together. Everyone at the studio was great - a very worthwhile experience!
A good experience even if it was a little pricey. We were met at Kyoto Station by Ayako, who was very attentive from the start and had a good command of English. We then took a local train to where the studio was located and were met by Aoi who drove us to the studio. There was a brief introduction with regards to the Takio drums and a good set of notes and visuals with Aoi replying to all our questions. She had made the decision to turn professional 2 years ago having started from around 8 years old with her uncles inspiration. After the introduction we were given a rendition by her. The energy, focus and shear delight shone through. Clearly she has found her calling in life. Her proud positiveness made us feel she was gifted. She plays in displays throughout Japan and although she is the youngest member of her troupe she kept us engaged and enthralled. There was just me and my wife on this tour, however this meant we had the total attention of both women. In effect a private lesson. A perfect workout for the mind and body as you crave to hit the drums without mistakes to the beat we practiced line by line. My only minor comment is that you need to bring your own refreshment and not offered the chance to buy something. My wife who was apprehensive absolutely loved this activity as did I.
Mom and I took this class. Michiko picks you up at Kyoto station and take a 20min train ride to another city to get to the studio. learn a lot and there is a professional drummer teaching you how to drum. so fun. she was fantastic also. sat in awe watching her play. had a great time!!
The taiko drum experience completely blew us away! We were escorted to a real drum studio, learned about the history of taiko drumming, saw a live performance, and then were taught how to play a song. What took this experience to the next level, though, was the care and dedication of our guide, Azumi, who spoke English fluently, and connected with each participant. She and the drum instructor/performer, Aoi, shared stories and helped us express our own values and stories in Japanese characters for the headbands on our costumes. It was a cultural exchange that taught skills and lifted up each participant. What an incredible experience!
The Taiko Drumming experience was fun and Michiko was very enthusiastic. Michiko explained the history of Taiko and the significance of drumming throughout Japanese history. The professional demonstration was one live drummer playing with a video recorded drummer and it was very impressive.
Time flew as we learned the basics of the taiko. Mr Sakurai was a very patient teacher & our two guides Akayo & Michi were the best hosts for our session. It was held at a professional taiko studio & we were stepped through the drumming sequences so that our final performance that we videoed on our own phones looked like we nearly knew what we were doing. There was no attempt to upsell anything & they were happy for any photos. Lots of laughs along the way to learning step by step. I would recommend this to everyone of any age & you don’t need any experience.
This was fun!!!!! Our family of 4 loved everything about the Taikido Drum experience. The drums are so resonant, you feel the sound all the way through the chest. It was awesome to learn about the drums; even better to hear our sensei play; and an absolute delight to get to try it ourselves. Mr. Sakura skillfully and patiently helped us learn a piece. The drums are very forgiving, so that after about 30 minutes of fun learning and practice, we were able to play the piece together and sound reasonable. The whole experience was an awesome music lesson on an instrument we would never get to play. Our guides made everything easy, meeting us at Kyoto station and helping us navigate the train to get to the studio, just a brief train journey away. We had such a great time!
The Taiko drum experience was very well organized. Michiko was very kind and helpful. The instructor was very professional as well. Both her and the instructor went out of their way to encourage participation and make sure that everyone had an enjoyable time. The experience involves learning about the history of Taiko drumming, practicing a song and culminates in a group recital of the song. I would highly recommend this cultural experience.
Our Taiko Drumming experience was fantastic! Michiko guided us on the train from Kyoto station to the drumming workshop - she was incredibly friendly and even helped teach us some Japanese slang! We learnt the history of Taiko and once at the workshop learnt how to play through a few different rhythms. The whole experience was super organised and easy to understand. For anyone interested in music, this was a great experience!
My kids (ages 10 and 15) and I decided to try a Taiko drum experience. We met our guide Akemi at the Kyoto station and took the train to Osaka. Akemi was sweet, personable and gave us a presentation about the history of Taiko drumming that we all enjoyed. Our drummer Yusuke was incredible-he taught us how to drum and perform a full song at the end! It was such a unique family experience that we all enjoyed!
This was the most fantastic experience. Akemi met us at the station and while on the train ride to the Taiko studio explained everything to us. Aoi was the most talented teacher and taiko drummer! Aoi’s performance live was brilliant, engaging and precisely in time with the colleague on video. Aoi taught well, introducing and demonstrating each stage and we were able to record a really satisfying performance at the end. Such a great session - highly recommended experience!
It was a very pleasant moment for my son and me — an interactive experience in Japanese tradition. Our guide and instructor were attentive and friendly. Thank you !!!
Michiko our guide and Aoi our Taiko musician were both fabulous! It was so much fun to experience this part of Japanese tradition. We wrote kanji on headbands and learned some simple measures of music. It was a great experience!
Went with my wife and two adult sons- Such a great time!! Our guide Michiko was very friendly and the class was not only fun but extremely informative. I’m also a professional drummer who is always eager to learn new things - especially concepts from other parts of the world. But the class was presented in such a way that it was really enjoyable for my family as well. We all laughed and really got into what we were doing!! Michiko met us at Kyoto Station where we grabbed a quick train ride (one stop!) to where there were two clean, new vans waiting for our group for a quick ride over to the studio. The studio was very new, clean and organized- the drums themselves were all beautiful and great to play. We had a quick history lesson and then it was time to actually learn some techniques and in no time at all, we played a whole song! Amazing… Please do yourself a favor and go immerse yourself in this centuries-old art form. I promise you will love it!
We felt so lucky to learn about the tradition of taiko and get a lesson from Aoi. A unique and exhilarating experience! Akemi, our guide and interpreter, was helpful from the start. Five/five stars, would recommend.
Our family of six (with kids aged 7, 10, 12, and 13) had an absolute blast at this taiko drum experience in Kyoto. It ended up being one of the true highlights of our trip to Japan! From the start, everything was well-organized. Michiko, our guide, met us right at Kyoto Station and made the entire meetup process smooth and stress-free. Her clear instructions were incredibly helpful, especially in such a large and busy train station. The class itself was fantastic, high-energy, fun, and accessible for all ages. Our kids were engaged the entire time, and we adults had just as much fun as they did! The experience was not only unique and culturally rich, but also surprisingly energizing and joyful. We left smiling, sweaty, and totally satisfied. Highly recommended for families or anyone looking to try something different and memorable in Kyoto. Or Osaka. Thank you Michiko and team!
Wow! We did this with our family of six- four boys ages 13 to 7 years old and every person had a great time. It was such an amazing experience from start to finish. With meeting at the train station, learning about the drums, and then playing the drums was such a fun time for our entire family. This will for certain a highlight of our two week trip of Japan and encourage everyone to do it!
Truly enjoyed our experience. Our guide was extremely friendly and instructor was great. My kids enjoyed themselves greatly. Wish we could have played longer.
Oh my gosh! We had a fantastic time! We are five 55+ adults traveling together for a wedding. This was a delightful experience. Our guide, M, was very proficient in English and easy to understand. You could tell she truly enjoyed her position and her enthusiasm transferred to us! We learned about the history and the Japanese culture in relationship to the drums in a very clever manner. The instructor was amazing - not only was his playing technique impressive, but he was able to teach a bunch of 'oldies but goodies' how to play these drums and sound half way decent. Would highly recommend for a unique, fascinating and fun experience.
This experience was well organised and we thoroughly enjoyed every minute from meeting Michiko to the lesson with Aio to our performance - we all learned a lot about Taiko drumming and had a lot of fun along the way. We highly recommend this experience.
This Taiko Experience was excellent. Well organized, fun, taught by a master percussionist. With a charming English speaking interpreter. We cannot recommend this activity highly enough. Not to be missed.
It’s outside of Kyoto but very easy to get to and they pick you up at Kyoto station to transfer you. A great experience and well worth it
Our tour guide Kumi-san (EE tours) is friendly and punctual and met us at the train station. She spoke excellent English. She shared insight on the local region and culture during our train ride. Our instructor Aoi-sensei then picked up by private car and comfortably driven to the Wadaiko Masaya studio. We received an excellent presentation on Taiko and its place in Japanese culture, an awesome performance by the instructor, customized our headbands (hachimaki), learned to a play a piece of music. The instructor and guide worked in tandem to bridge language barrier to create a fun learning environment. Highly recommended for everyone regardless of musical background and ability. We performed the piece of music then had an opportunity for photos. We were then driven back to the train station, A very enjoyable, memorable, and enlightening workshop.
