Chef Midori’s warmth and personality is as delicious as her cooking. We spent a memorable evening in her home learning to cook a fabulous authentic Japanese meal. This experience is perfect for anyone who wants to get a true taste of Japan. Come hungry!!
What a great experience with Midori! From the start taking time to tell us about the opportunities throughout Kyoto to the cooking class experience. The chance to share making each course and sitting down to enjoy and get to know more about each other’s lives. Midori the Julia Child of Kyoto thanks for the teachings and best of all the great food!
We had a great time. Midori was so genuine and friendly. She took great interest in our trip to Japan. Beyond that the food was amazing and we had a great experience cooking gyozas and other foods.
We had such a wonderful cooking class with Midori today! We learned how to make delicious gyoza, onigiri, and ramen, and every single dish turned out amazing. There was so much food that we left completely full and happy! From the moment we arrived, Midori welcomed us into her home like old friends. She was incredibly warm, personable, and welcoming, creating a relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere from start to finish. The class struck the perfect balance between hands-on cooking and watching her demonstrate techniques, so we not only had fun but also came away feeling like we truly learned how to make each of these dishes ourselves. Everything was explained clearly, the food was absolutely delicious, and we left feeling confident that we can recreate these recipes at home. Thank you so much, Midori, for such a memorable experience. It was one of the highlights of our trip to Japan, and we would highly recommend this class to anyone visiting Kyoto!
Chef Midori is simply fantastic. The best meal we have had in all of Japan. From the moment you walk into her place, she welcomes you like long, lost friends. She masterfully teaches you how to cook and you don’t even know you’re actually cooking. Perfect activity for non cooks and for people who love cooking. We would fly back just to spend time with Chef Midori and eat her delicious food. 5000 stars!!
If you are interested in a cooking demonstration and dinner with a lovely Japanese host, this might be the experience for you! I wish we had made ramen.
Absolutely delightful evening with Midori! We learned so many great secrets for several dishes and had a fantastic meal. Our meal with Midori was by far the favorite for our Kyoto stay. She is delightful, like visiting a friend and will share so many tips. Don’t hesitate, such a fun experience!
We had a phenomenal time with Midori, learning how to make gyoza, miso, and tonkatsu. This is a longish class that lasted us 3 delightful hours and had very large portions. Come hungry and ready to learn.
Had such a great time cooking with Midori! So much fun and the food was delicious. Midori is so sweet too. We enjoyed spending time with her. Highly recommend!
It’s a rare treat to come to Japan as a visitor and be able to experience a meal inside a Japanese home. The skills from the cooking class were wonderful, but the social aspect of chatting with a local was immeasurable. Midori is delightful, and a true gem. Thank you!
Midori is a wonderful teacher and enthusiastic about passing on her knowledge and expertise. She was interested in us and our interests and gave us tips for the places we were visiting in Japan.
Midori gave very specific advice on shopping related to our cooking wishes. We cooked two delicious meals with her. She was enthusiastic and experienced.
Midori was an excellent host and extraordinary chef. She taught us how to cook Gyoza Pork rice bowl and miso soup. Her preparations were delicious. We highly recommend her to anyone who wants to know what great Japanese cooking is all about.
We loved our cooking experience with Chef Midori. She made a beautiful meal with us, and above and beyond that she had many recommendations for restaurants and other activities. Regarding the cooking, her instructions were very clear. Regarding the recommendations, she continued to communicate with us when we had questions regarding the recommendations even after the cooking class throughout our stay in Kyoto. We would give her six stars if that were possible.
If you like Japanese food do this course! Midori San is a legend and ever so unique! She is kind, welcoming and funny. More than that, she treats you like a long lost friend the moment you walk through the door. Her class is very interactive and you will definitely improve. We made tonkatsu, miso soup and onigiri and will be making it again when we get home. She will give you a glimpse into local culture, cuisine but also choice of ingredients and great tips for making do with Western ingredients. She gave us some marvellous tips for local shops and food places and actually helped us find a Japanese knife. Even if you are no good in the kitchen, this will be a cultural experience for you and it ends with a tasty meal. Highly highly recommend this to anyone who wants to experience Kyoto in more depth.
We had an amazing cooking experience with Midori! She was incredibly kind, welcoming, and helpful throughout the entire class. Her instructions were easy to follow, and the dishes we made turned out delicious! What made the experience even more special was Midori’s thoughtfulness—she went above and beyond by offering us tips and ideas for other things to see and do while in Kyoto. Her local insights were so helpful and really enriched our trip. This was truly one of the highlights of our time in Japan. Highly recommend!
My husband and I are on our honeymoon and we both love to cook. We both enjoyed Mindori’s class. She answered all of our questions and even made recommendations on things to do in Kyoto and other cities. She also helped us with making dinner reservations. Her location is also easily accessible by train and she let us record the lessons for future use.
Fantastic. Very nice lady and extremely friendly. Expert cooking advice. Food was great. Very helpful with other tourist information
Really enjoyed the cooking lesson with Midori-san, I chose Okonomiaki from the options offered, as this was something I had attempted at home from a recipe. The difference between following a recipe and being shown how to make it by an expert is incredible! I left feeling confident I could cook it again, and with a copy of the recipe with some handy substitution tips and feeling very full with delicious Okonomiaki ! She was also very helpful with many ideas about places to see around the area (I went onto the nearby railway museum after the lesson!).
This was the most wonderful experience we had in Kyoto! Midori-San communicated with us after we booked and shared several options for what we could choose to cook. On the day of, from the moment we arrived at her charming studio we felt like we were family visiting a close relative. Midori was so welcoming and kind, and we ended up staying and chatting with her for a long while. She had fabulous recommendations for restaurants, shops, and experiences to make our trip perfect. She even spent a good deal of effort helping me track down my Japanese host family from high school. Not to mention the delicious cooking!!! We loved our evening with our new “Kyoto Mama” and would highly recommend as a must-do experience for anyone visiting Kyoto. ❤️
The morning spent with Midori in her home was very enjoyable and informative. I learned a great deal about Japanese cooking techniques and the use of different ingredients. Midori has good communication and teaching skills and together we prepared a delicious lunch. She has a good choice of menus catering for all dietary requirements. I highly recommend this experience.
I really enjoyed the cooking class. We made chicken ramen and gyoza. Midori is a great chef and a pleasant conversationalist. I highly recommend
My husband I spent our honeymoon in Japan and thought it would be fun to book a cooking class. I found Midori through TikTok and am so glad that I did. The class was at 5:30pm and it was only my husband and I, it felt so intimate! Midori taught us how to make onigiri, gyoza, and shoyu ramen, all from scratch. The food was AMAZING and authentic, and so was the conversation. We got to leave with recipes of all the food we made so we can attempt to recreate them at home. Midori gave us a list of local recommendations from food to desserts, and even a place to buy chefs knives. She made us feel at home the moment we arrived. She even offered to be a resource throughout our trip in Japan. If you’re thinking about booking a class with Midori, DO IT! You won’t regret. Thank you Midori, we’ll see you again soon!
Midori was a very nice and friendly host who guided us through 3 classic Japanese dishes. It feels very homey and cosy at her place. And she is very good with children.
It was very interesting to learn how to cook Japanese food. Michiyo is a very good teacher, we learned so much with her.
While planning for my trip to Japan I wanted to try a new experience and was provided with an incredible opportunity through traveling spoon. I booked my experience with Michiyo Kobori who provided in detail what to expect for the evening. Connecting most to these details provided by my pending host I chose her to be my guide to Japanese cuisine for the evening. I was given ample instructions in how and when to meet her (Important as I was nervous already about directions and getting lost). Michiyo also maintained email correspondence to ensure no confusion as well. I was greeted at our meeting spot with kindness and a warm welcome by my host. From there we traveled a short distance in Michiyo's car to her home; another warm welcome from the family dog as well. There Michiyo provided a short demonstration and description on the key flavors of Japan and also prominent ingredients found in Japanese cooking. Following the short lesson we got to work with the night's dinner (Also printed out in excellently explained recipe sheets as a keepsake and future referencing). The meal was a simple and traditional one consisting of 5 courses. It was fun taking the time to make these dishes and also learning the tricks to making them well when I get home. I am still amazed by the little tool for measuring and whisking miso paste. Delicious and easy to achieve; Michiyo provided me a great memory on my stop in Kyoto. The photos I took gained me many comments and likes from friends and family alike inquiring as to when I would be gracing them with the same opportunities to try Michiyo's cooking. I was also introduced to Michiyo's husband who provided hearty and light dinner and post dinner conversations. They were helpful in their recommendations for the journey in Japan. Again, their directions for how to get to Osaka from Kyoto were most welcome. I would highly recommend this activity for anyone on their trip to Japan. Whether it be a solo or in a group; Look up Michiyo in Kyoto as your guide to the world of Japanese cuisine.
We had a very good time as a family. Midori knows perfectly how to lead her class to make it pleasant and friendly. The recipes are very well explained, and she even takes the time to take souvenir photos that she sends to us afterwards. We left with plenty of great recommendations for the rest of our trip, as well as little gifts to help us cook Japanese food at home. An unforgettable moment in Kyoto, without hesitation our favorite activity!
The cooking class with Midori was fantastic! He welcomed us into his home, first with a bit of chat about our trip leaving us a thousand local tips, sharing restaurants to try and places to visit! After that we started preparing dinner with her, she explained the recipes step by step, including the types of ingredients to buy, the pots to use .. everything! After preparing the 3 dishes that we had chosen we sat at the table with her and had dinner together, between chatter and laughter it was a pleasant evening
