Itinerary
Experience Kyoto through the eyes of a local as you explore Japan's ancient capital, where centuries-old temples, peaceful gardens, hidden alleyways, and enduring traditions exist alongside everyday life. Before your experience begins, you'll complete an online Personalization Form, allowing your host to tailor the day around your interests, whether you're passionate about history, architecture, food, local culture, or Kyoto's iconic landmarks. Every experience is thoughtfully personalized, allowing your route to evolve naturally throughout the day based on your interests, the season, weather conditions, and local crowd levels. Here are some of the places your personalized experience may include:
Running alongside the Kamo River, Pontochō is one of Kyoto's most atmospheric streets. This narrow lantern-lit alley has been a celebrated dining district for centuries, where traditional architecture and timeless charm create an unforgettable first impression.
Known as "Kyoto's Kitchen," Nishiki Market has been the city's culinary heart for more than 400 years. Its lively covered arcade is lined with family-run stalls selling seasonal specialties, traditional sweets, pickles, and regional delicacies.
Kyoto's famous geisha district preserves one of Japan's most enduring cultural traditions. Historic teahouses, lantern-lit streets, and beautifully preserved architecture create an atmosphere unlike anywhere else, where centuries-old customs continue today.
Lined with traditional machiya townhouses, Hanamikoji is one of Kyoto's most elegant streets. As evening approaches, you may catch a glimpse of a geiko or maiko on their way to an engagement, continuing traditions that have endured for generations.
Standing at the entrance to Gion for more than 1,350 years, Yasaka Shrine is the spiritual heart of the district. It is best known as the home of Gion Matsuri, one of Japan's oldest and most celebrated annual festivals.
The graceful five-story Yasaka Pagoda has watched over Higashiyama for more than 600 years. Rising above Kyoto's historic rooftops, it remains one of the city's most photographed landmarks and enduring symbols.
These beautifully preserved stone streets are lined with traditional wooden buildings, artisan workshops, teahouses, and specialty boutiques. Walking here offers a glimpse into Kyoto's historic streetscape, largely unchanged for centuries.
Perched on Kyoto's eastern hills, Kiyomizu-dera is renowned for its remarkable wooden stage, built entirely without nails. Visitors wishing to explore this UNESCO World Heritage Site are welcome to do so with separate admission.
Thousands of vibrant vermilion torii gates wind through the wooded slopes of Mount Inari, creating one of Japan's most recognizable landscapes. Dedicated to the Shinto deity of prosperity, the shrine remains one of the country's most visited landmarks.
One of Kyoto's great Zen temples, Tofuku-ji is celebrated for its elegant wooden bridges and spectacular autumn colours. Its peaceful gardens and historic grounds provide a tranquil escape throughout every season.
Once home to Japan's Imperial Family for more than five centuries, Kyoto Imperial Palace reflects the city's royal heritage. Elegant architecture and spacious gardens offer a fascinating glimpse into Kyoto's imperial past.
Built in 1603 for Tokugawa Ieyasu, Nijō Castle played a pivotal role in Japanese history. Its famous nightingale floors, impressive architecture, and beautifully preserved grounds reveal the power of Japan's feudal rulers. Separate admission applies.
Arashiyama Bamboo Grove's towering bamboo stalks create one of Kyoto's most iconic natural landscapes. Their gentle rustling has been recognised among Japan's "100 Soundscapes," making this peaceful grove as memorable for its sounds as its scenery.
One of Kyoto's most important Zen temples, Tenryū-ji is renowned for its exquisite landscape garden, which has remained largely unchanged for over 700 years. Visitors wishing to explore the temple grounds are welcome with separate admission.
More than 600 illuminated pillars display colourful kimono-inspired textile designs in this unique outdoor art installation. Blending traditional craftsmanship with contemporary design, it has become one of Arashiyama's most photographed attractions.
For more than 400 years, Togetsukyō Bridge has been the defining symbol of Arashiyama. Framed by forested mountains that transform with the seasons, it offers one of Kyoto's most picturesque and enduring views.
Home to one of the world's most celebrated Zen rock gardens, Ryōan-ji invites quiet reflection. Its carefully arranged stones have inspired visitors for centuries, while their hidden symbolism continues to spark debate today.
Covered in gold leaf, Kinkaku-ji is one of Japan's most iconic landmarks. Reflected in a tranquil pond, this UNESCO World Heritage Site began as a shogun's retirement villa before becoming an important Zen temple. Separate admission applies.
Dedicated to Sugawara no Michizane, Japan's revered scholar and deity of learning, Kitano Tenmangū is famous for its seasonal plum blossoms, historic buildings, and peaceful grounds.

Masaya was a great guide. His English was perfect, they way he built our itinerary was thoughtfully tailored to us and he was a strong historian. I especially loved that he knew his antiques and introduced us to shops off the beaten path. What a gem. I would recommend him to anyone who has high expectations and appreciation for thoughtful guides.
Deep knowledge of the temples and history. Very helpful understanding the context of 14-19th century events.
Pam was a fantastic guide! She was so flexible and guided the tour to exactly what we wanted to see. Her fun personality and informative nature made the tour so memorable. Highly recommend this tour and Pam as your guide!
Mana was a wonderful private tour guide for us concert. Everything to our needs and was very knowledgeable. We thoroughly enjoyed our tour.!
Ada was really a terrific guide. She was super fun, smart, easy to talk to. We had a great day!
I highly recommend this. Tom was an insightful and very knowledgeable tour guide. There are tour guides and there are tour guides who are passionate about history and tom belongs to the latter and its infectious. Because of him, i have deeper understanding and appreciation of japanese culture and history. Having tom as a tour guide is like having a good friend show you their city. I wish every tour guide could be like him.
Scott was excellent. Great insider perspectives and natural English speaker. We really enjoyed our full day tour with Scott! Thanks so much and we would recommend him to friends and family
We can highly recommend Shan Forster as a tour guide: She is welcoming, very competent and friendly
My husband and I are just completing our first trip to Japan and we’ve had many wonderful experiences! Our private tour through the Gion district of Kyoto was one of the highlights, thanks in great part to our wonderful guide, PAM! She was exceptional: friendly, knowledgeable, passionate, patient, and quick to help us with ALL our needs, even those that had nothing to do with our tour… Pam did more than show us the sights: she explained their history and cultural significance. She discussed modern life and current customs. She took us through lively AND quiet sections of GION so we could get a true sense of the area’s beauty. But most of all, Pam was concerned about us PERSONALLY… She wanted us to feel comfortable, so she periodically asked if the pace was good, if we needed to stop or get some refreshments, etc. She also tailored the tour to our interest in Japanese handicrafts; we were able to purchase several special gifts because Pam knew the BEST shops for what we were looking for…Pam also helped us prepare for two other tours by taking us to their meeting places - this was INVALUABLE because we found it difficult to navigate Gion addresses on our own… She also called us a taxi and invited us to contact her if we needed ANYTHING else while we were in Japan. Ben and I cannot praise or thank her enough for all her attention to detail! We highly recommend this tour, but we ESPECIALLY recommend that you take it with PAM!!!!
This tour was truly one of the highlights of my entire trip to Japan! My guide, Amy, was absolutely fantastic: knowledgeable, funny, warm, and genuinely caring. From the very beginning, she made the experience feel less like a traditional tour and more like exploring Kyoto with a wonderful friend. Her enthusiasm, sense of humor, and thoughtful attention to every detail made the day incredibly special. She was always happy to answer questions, share fascinating stories, and make sure I felt comfortable and included. What stood out most was her genuine kindness and passion for sharing Kyoto’s history, culture, and hidden treasures. I couldn’t have asked for a better way to experience this beautiful city. The entire day was engaging, memorable, and filled with laughter. I walked away with a much deeper appreciation for Kyoto and memories I’ll treasure for years. I cannot recommend this tour or Amy highly enough! If you’re visiting Kyoto, do yourself a favor and book it. You won’t regret it!

Milo was very knowledgeable and friendly. Provided a very useful orientation to Kyoto.
We booked a four hour Kyoto tour with Masaya and it did not disappoint. He gave us a few options of what an itinerary could look like and let us choose or customize from there. He was a wealth of knowledge so much show even after the tour he followed up on some of our questions about how to navigate transportation on a few other items we had booked. Highly reccomend!
Kenta was amazing. He tailored the tour to what we were interested in and was very knowledgeable. We really enjoyed the tour.
Jose was awesome! It was super relaxed and she showed me different temples and shrines in Kyoto and went over their history. Throughout the tour, it felt like I was hanging out with my friend. We ate food and he showed me the city. I loved it.
Toshi was very informative and helped
Our guide Eiko was wonderful! She showed us all of the important highlights of Kyoto. The pace of the tour was excellent.
Afifa has been a very informative guide. She explained e everything well, nicely and politely. We would highly recommend her.
The cruise port in Osaka is a significant distance from Kyoto. We booked with Viator really not realizing how far was nor the cost and time to get there. Stupid us. Better planning was clearly needed. Viator we will continue to use because it’s always worked out well for us in the past.
Kokoro was an excellent guide in every respect. Cannot recommend him highly enough!
Masaya made it a very enjoyable afternoon. He sent an itinerary for our approval and made a slight adjustment to fit our interests before we met. Really appreciated his communication prior, informative information, walking through and adjusting to our pace, and really grateful for all of the recommendations.
This your, led by Milo, was by far the best tour I have ever been on. I learned so much. Milo is a wealth of information and he presents facts with humor and an easy intelligence.
Ada was a fantastic guide, with great knowledge of the area and its history! The experience was tailored to our wants and she gave us an amazing day!
Our guide Kiyoto was awesome. He took us to visit so many amazing places and was very knowledgeable. A great time. My family enjoyed it.
We had an absolutely fantastic tour of Kyoto with Shaan! She was incredibly accommodating and customized the itinerary for our family of five, even making sure we ended near Nishiki Market in time for our lunch reservation. Despite an incredibly hot day, our three kids stayed engaged and had a great time. Shaan even incorporated a scavenger hunt for them, which was such a thoughtful and fun touch! We learned so much from her about Japanese food, culture, and traditions along the way. She was warm, knowledgeable, flexible, and wonderful with our kids, and the tour felt truly personalized to our family. It was such a fun and memorable way to experience Kyoto and definitely one of the highlights of our time there. We would highly recommend Shaan, especially for families traveling with kids!
It was a wonderful way to learn about the history of Kyoto and shrines we visited. Masaya, our guide, told interesting stories, answered a ton of our questions and made the entire experience fun and interesting both for me and my teenage son. He also gave us a number of recommendations for other places to visit, based on our interests, while in Kyoto.
Our amazing tour guide Amy Sato was as wonderful as Kyoto. Very knowledgeable, kind and friendly! She showed us beautiful Temples, best rout of transportation and made sure we were safe in the sweltering heat. She is one of the best tour guides we have encountered. Highly recommended !
Kokoro was fabulous! We took us to see so many great temples, was attentive to our needs and taught us how to use public transportation.
I had the best time exploring Kyoto with Hanna! She is incredibly warm, friendly and knowledgeable, and made the whole experience feel so easy and special. She was attentive, thoughtful and always happy to share her knowledge or help with anything I needed. I was travelling solo, and Hanna was such wonderful company - it genuinely felt like discovering Kyoto with a friend who knows everything about the city. I’m so happy I booked the tour and couldn’t recommend her more. Thank you, Hanna, for such a lovely and memorable day! ❤️✨
This response form doesn't support the date of my experience. I had a good visit and wish I could have explored Kyoto at more leisure - such are the vagaries of a 2 week visit to Japan. How I wished to have spent more time in Kyoto - in the end it was a mere ½ day.
Amy was fabulous guide, very energetic and interesting. Strongly recommended!
We had the most wonderful tour of Kyoto with Amy Sato. She picked us up directly from our hotel and took us on a wonderful adventure. She first took us to the Higashi where she gave us lots of history about the beautiful temple then took us to Fushini Inari to see the shrine. After she dropped us off at Niski market and showed us some of the tasty foods of Kyoto. What a great day! Highly highly recommend Amy. She had such a positive attitude and we learned so much
This was the best way to see Kyoto. Cici was a fantastic guide…knowledgeable and warm and funny. She was also careful to make sure we didn’t overheat in the hot, sticky weather. She met us at the hotel and we were off to see the beautiful sites of Kyoto. She also took us to hidden areas around Kyoto off the beaten path and not touristy. Highly recommend this tour and Cici as the guide. Five stars!!!
We loved this tour, perfect for us. It was personal , focused on the historical sites and really efficient. The weather was incredibly hot and Jose was very considerate, adjusting as we went. Jose was a wonderful guide, personable, interesting, great at showing us the best bits and lots of great conversation about modern day Japan. Would 100% recommend!
Our tour guide Milo for our tour in Kyoto was the absolutely wonderful. He brought the rich history of the places and had deep knowledge of every site we visited. He was well-organized and maximized our time to visit many places within our 2 hr tour. He had great suggestions for dining options and also about events in Kyoto. We could not have asked for a more engaging and professional guide. Thank you so much Milo for making our short trip memorable.

Our guide was terrific in introducing us to the city, its history and historic areas. She also gave us a good sense of the types of restaurants and main shopping areas in the city. The walking tour was exactly the right pace and a terrific start to our visit to Kyoto.
We had an amazing day exploring Kyoto with Papa Ninja (Kokoro). He took us to beautiful shrines and temples, explained the culture and introduced us to fantastic local eateries. What really made the tour stand out was that he brought us to places away from the typical tourist crowds, giving us a chance to experience a more authentic side of Kyoto. His knowledge, sense of humor, and enthusiasm made the entire day enjoyable from start to finish.
My son and I took a day trip to Kyoto and had a personalized private tour with an English speaking guide. Cecil was our guide. She was pleasant, personable and knowledgeable. My hard to please teenage son and I had a great time with her. Thank you!
Our tour guide Kiyoto was an absolute gem. A local Kyoto citizen born and raised, he gave our family including two kids an amazing tour - great location choices, pacing, quality and depth of tour. He also made us a nice little video of our tour! You will not be disappointed if booking a tour with Kiyoto from Kyoto!
Cecilia was a tremendous guide, walking us through quieter streets of Kyoto and guiding us to two temples and finally the palace. We were a group of three, two adults and a twelve year old, on the five hour tour. We all connected well with Cecilia. She answered our questions and kept sharing information about Kyoto and Japanese history, culture, and customs. We were also grateful to Cecilia for helping us navigate the Kyoto transit system and she helped us get a transit card for our daughter. Something we would not have been able to do easily on our own. We look forward to recommending Cecilia to friends planning to travel to Kyoto.
Jose showed us the main sites based on our preferences and knew all of the shortcuts around the large tourist areas.
Austen was incredible! He was very thoughtful with the itinerary and created a wonderful experience for us!
It was the best tour I’ve had anywhere, ever. Our guide, Annisa was outstanding. She is highly knowledgeable and so pleasant to walk through Kyoto with. She is immediately likable and taught us much interesting history while making the tour fun. I highly recommend this tour and hope that you are lucky enough to have Annisa guide you.
Jose was a fantastic tour guide for our mixed-generation family of 7. We had him for 1.5 days and saw quite a lot of Kyoto, but he didn’t make us feel rushed. He was able to connect well with the kids while throughly explaining the history of Kyoto’s sites to our parents (his English is excellent!). Thank you for a great couple of days!
We had the pleasure of spending yesterday with Ceci, and it was one of the highlights of our trip to Japan. She is an incredibly knowledgeable guide with a deep understanding of Japanese history, culture, and traditions. Her explanations were fascinating, especially when she spoke about geishas and their important role in Japanese society. She brought history to life in a way that was both engaging and memorable. What made the experience even more special was Ceci herself. She is a warm, caring, and thoughtful person who genuinely looks after her guests. Throughout the tour, she was attentive to our needs and made sure everyone felt comfortable and included. What impressed us most was her kindness after the tour had officially ended. She did not simply say goodbye and leave. Instead, she helped us get a taxi, carefully explained our destination to the driver, and made sure we were safely on our way. That level of care and dedication is rare and deeply appreciated. Ceci is not only an outstanding guide but also a wonderful human being. We are extremely grateful for the time we spent with her and would recommend her without hesitation to anyone visiting Japan. Thank you, Ceci, for your knowledge, kindness, and genuine care. You made our day truly unforgettable.
We were 3 reited couples on our firstt trip to Japan. Riku was am excellent tour guide. He spoke very good English. We created a customized tour. The van we were transported in was large, comfortable, air conditioned, and equipped with wifi.
very nice trip, Ceci E. was professional and kind
This is an excellent tour. We took a private tour of Austin. He was punctual. He took us to various sites within the city. His explanations were thorough. His Pace was very good. We covered a lot of ground with many shrines and temples. We saw sites of historical and cultural significance. We had life at a local restaurant with Japanese comfort food. All of my family interacted well with him and he provided much information which is beneficial for the rest of the trip. I highly recommend this tour.
