Chiyou was a fantastic guide with great insights into the history of the area. She gave us so many tips and hints. We would never had learnt so much if she wasn’t guiding me s.
Such a great tour with the lovely Chiyoe. A nice way to learn more about the Japanese food culture and to be able to ask all the different questions we have after a few days in this country. We were all very full and happy after a few hours walk. Definitely recommend!!!! Thanks Chi!
Our guide, Ayako, was delightful and most informative -not only about food, but about the history of Kyoto. We thoroughly enjoyed the tour of various food epicentres and of some other sites that we would never have known about if not shown by Ayako. The food that we sampled was delicious too! We highly recommend this tour.
We had such a fun time walking around Kyoto… from a temple, to an upscale grocery store, Bel Amer chocolate shop, to some delicious food shops and Nishiki Market at the end. Ayako is an attentive and knowledgeable tour guide. We enjoyed learning about local foods, and sampling things along the tour. Highly recommend this tour with Ayako to anyone.
Walking around Kyoto, getting to know good places to eat, experiencing food… is just one of the best ways to get to know a place, people and culture. Nishiki market, basement of Daimaru all offer a variety of food unimaginable!
We loved our food tour with Hiro! The tour included nearby grocery store, dashi tasting, bao, and traditional Japanese breakfast in addition to the Nishiki Market portion. We learned a lot from Hiro and loved everything that we tasted. Would recommend!
We had a wonderful tour around Kyoto with Rika! She was incredibly friendly, knowledgeable and showed us so many amazing local spots. We started with breakfast after visiting a temple, then explored charming streets filled with small cafes and a chocolate shop. At Nishiki Market we tried so many delicious foods including donuts, croquettes, gyoza, sushi, sake and more. Rika also took us to a shopping street with anime stores and we got to shop! Rika made the experience so enjoyable and personal. We absolutely loved the tour and would highly recommend it to anyone visiting Kyoto for the first time!
We were shown a lot of great food choices that were local favorites and were very pleased to try them. We can now go back and know what to try on our own. The guide was very knowledgeable (Rika) and helpful. I highly suggest this tour if you are interested in learning about the local food.
We undertook a walking tour of the market where we bought ingredients for a Donburi cooking class. The market has been influenced by the number of tourists visiting and that is reflected in what it offers as well as prices. The cooking class was good albeit a little chaotic in terms of instructions. We did not really do much other than dip some prepared cut vegetables in an already prepared batter and then fry them. We ate them with some pre-prepared rice which had some seasoning liquid spooned over it. So really not much cooking at all. It was therefore 1) touristy and not quaint or special and 2) a let down. Based on other reviews would recommend travellers try other things they offer.
We went on the Donburi Cooking Class + Nishiki Market Food Tour today. Our guide and chef, Chie, took us to several unique, historic shops in the market before returning to the cooking studio where she taught us how to prepare Shrimp Tempura and Chicken + Egg Donburi. Chie has a lovely personality and infectious enthusiasm for her craft...we had a wonderful time! Highly recommended!
My son and I took this tour with Hiro and it was absolutely incredible. It was worth every penny and more. Hiro was able to take us to so many different places that I would have never gone to without her guidance. She shared cultural knowledge that made our expedience richer while learning about so much more than just the authentic Japanese cuisine! The food was all so delicious and unique. Hiro was also an amazing tour guide being so charismatic, engaging , flexible and funny while answering all of our questions and taking us around downtown Kyoto. I am one that always reads reviews before ever booking an experience. I’m telling you, this adventure is not want you want to miss!
The local tour guide was very knowledgeable about the area. This was a fun local tour, with a nice selection of sample tastings.
Enjoyed my time with our Guide and fellow travellers that I met on this tour. She was efficient, polite and explained in detail about the foods we saw and tasted. Nice tour to enjoy in Kyoto.
We had a great guide Mitch. It was a great combination of visiting a local cafe to taste local Kyoto food, followed by the food section of the departmental store and finally the market. These three different sections of the tour gave different food experiences. Our mistake was eating too much for breakfast as the cafe part was quite early on. It was a great way to spend a morning.
Interesting food but no real guidance on how much we could enjoy. Very much on a timetable. Didn't seem worth it.
We had a delightful tour with Yuki. Her English was excellent and she had a great knowledge of all the local food products many of which we sampled and enjoyed. We would recommend her to anyone wanting to have an authentic Japanese food experience. The food market was one of the highlights of our trip. Many thanks Lyn,George and Rob.
We had a delightful tour. Our guide was quite knowledgeable, spoke very good English, and took us to a number of interesting food shops.
Our guide was really lovely and caring. Given this, her English was limited. This tour was not worth the price. Our first visit was to a supermarket that's visited by locals, something I could have googled myself and was not explicitly stated in the tour description. We did not get any historical explanations of what was eaten or the any of the sites we passed. For over $200+ this Was very expensive to visit super markets and buying small items of food along the way. All the foods that were purchased was simply not worth the price. I could have taken the train to the market and ordered the foods on my own. Again, the tour guide was very generous and nice. We enjoyed her company more.
What a night! Our guide Andrea was amazing. He was so funny and very knowledgeable about Japanese culture and area. He took us where locals hangout and we ate and drink. We learned about Gion area and geisha district. It was wonderful night! Highly recommended and Andrea, thank you for a wonderful guide. My son told me it was the best tour so far in Japan.
Fantastic tour of a Japanese grocery store, the basement food court of Daimaru department store, a few local specialty food stores, and a walk through Nishiki market. Momo was full of information and great suggestions, and I had a taste of some fantastic food. The curry bun and sashimi at Nishiki market were my favorites. Thank you again to Momo and Cooking Sun!
It was wonderful eating different type of food. The guide was very friendly and flexible to meet our needs.
Great communication from the provider followed up by our guide Aiko who sprinkled us with interesting details around the food habits, history and culture of Kyoto all with a smile that the rain did not dampen. We had delicious snacks and tastes, be bold and try the things on offer, the kelp and rice was amazing, as were the delicious Hiro beef skewers, melt in your mouth! So glad to have had this opportunity to dive into the detail of this city. Thankyou Sun Cooking
We started at the food level of a department store with is a food heaven. Western mixed with local varieties of all kinds. Then our guide Yukari was so full of info and insights and shared her own favorites of home cocking. Along the walk we tasted local snacks until we couldn’t any more! We had such a wonderful morning.
Such a great experience. The market walk was fun and informative. We learnt so much about the flavours and foods available. Back to the Cooking Sun studio to make our lunch. We made tempura and all the steps were clear. Especially loved the information about dashi. Food was delicious and recipes provided.
Interesting tour wherein our guide brought us to a local supermarket, then to Daimaru’s food hall, then to Nishiki market where we tried different foods. What stood out was the last stop to Hiro Beef, where we had croquettes, beef sushi, and a skewer of beef, which was excellent.
The Nishiki Market Food Tour is stupendous. It’s one thing to wander through the 400 meter long without a guide. It’s another to be led by a knowledgeable expert like Yukari Onishi who knows the territory—the food, the shops, and the fascinating vendors nearby (rooftop garden, beehive, supermarket). We ate, we learned, and we came away wanting to recommend this Kyoto tour to everyone.
Aoki was an attentive, personable, knowledgeable and very sweet tour guide! We learned a lot about Nishiki Market. Highly recommended!
Our family absolutely loved the market tour and cooking class, from start to finish Kako was a fabulous host guide and teacher. I would highly recommend this for any family .
If you want a very knowledgeable interactive friendly food guide who speaks excellent English, this is the tour for you - and be sure to ask for Yukari. On our three-hour walk, we experienced a modern supermarket, the basement food emporium of a high-end department store and the 400+ yo covered Nishiki market for a full spectrum of types and presentation of raw and cooked foods. Whether you are new to Japanese food or an experienced gastronome, you will find this tour education, interesting and tasty (yes, we tasted many things).
We love food and were excited to have an opportunity to have a local take us around and point out some hidden gems. The tour exceeded our expectations and is something we will be talking about for years to come. Not only were we able to sample many things along the way but we picked up numerous items to take home that we otherwise would not have known about. If you are in Kyoto and love food this is an experience you will not want to miss.
Yoriko was a fabulous guide. We enjoyed many samples from various different businesses as well as a Sake tasting at a small shop. Well worth the fee! Good introduction to many of the different street/market food options.
I loved the tour, and would definitely recommend! It was a great chance to see a bit of downtown Kyoto, and learn more about the history of Kyoto and also the local cuisine! We visited several shops outside of the Nishiki Market that I wouldn't have visited otherwise, and I actually went back to a couple of them to pick up some food to bring back home. We got to sample lots of tasty treats inside and outside of the Market, so you'll definitely leave the tour full!
We did the tour with Rika over the Nishi market and it was highly recommended. Rika was very attentive and friendly, told us a lot about Kyoto, gave us more tips. The two teenagers I was traveling with were also thrilled. We tried a lot of different things at the market, were still at the Shrine and then Rika took us to a store we had wanted. Thank you for the great morning.
