Itinerary
Make your Kyoto experience part of everyday life: paint a ceramic ramen spoon, cook ramen, and take home a keepsake. Vegan and gluten-free options are available. At Musoshin Ramen Academy, combine ceramic painting with ramen cooking. Choose your colors, bring your design to life, and turn a ceramic spoon into a reminder of Kyoto. Step into the kitchen and prepare ramen using the same ingredients served in Musoshin’s restaurants: fresh noodles rested overnight, soup prepared over 12 hours, house-made tare seasoning, and chashu pork. Boil your noodles, arrange your toppings, and savor the bowl you have created. Founded in Kyoto in 2012, Musoshin brings its passion for ramen to every experience. Our Toronto restaurant has been featured in the MICHELIN Guide for five consecutive years. Our Gion restaurant was selected for Dazhong Dianping’s 2026 Must-Eat List (必吃榜) and was one of three restaurants from Japan invited to the awards ceremony. Your painted spoon will be kiln-fired overnight and ready to collect the next day. Shipping to your hotel is available for an additional fee. Come for the ramen. Leave with a skill, a keepsake, and a Kyoto story to share.

Such a fantastic experience. We really enjoyed painting the ramen spoons, but the best part was the ramen itself. The ramen was amazing, and I learned so much about the process and techniques that I didn’t know before.
Brilliant. Highly recommend everyone do this. This was great fun and learning
This was the best ramen we had on our trip. It was a fun experience and we enjoyed painting our own spoons. I would recommend looking up the bowl option at this location as I think those would have been more useful in our own personal kitchen. Warning: you do have to go back to retrieve the items after they've been fired in their kiln so make sure you account for that in your planning. Thankfully it is close to many of the sights we planned on seeing anyway. Also, ramen broth and noodles take time to make so it is more of a ramen assembling class. We did know this ahead of time.
Fun filled experience for the kids an adults! They were super interactive with kids. I would definitely recommend and the ramen was delicious!
So much fun!! Everybody was super nice
The staff were amazing, kind, and funny. The experience of making the ramen was fun and intriguing. The ramen tasted amazing and their spicy miso sause was amazing. The painting was fun and there was plenty of color choices. A real 5/5 spot that’s essential to your Kyoto trip
We did this activity as a part of four, me, my husband and our two kids, ages 18 and 11. We had the best time. The ramen was outstanding. The instruction was made very fun and accessible, everyone enjoyed it and participated fully, including my 11 year old kid. We also decorated ramen spoons which was another fun activity together. Cannot recommend this enough, especially as a group or family activity. Shelly and Shin were fabulous hosts and made the entire experience fun, easy and enjoyable.
This was a fun experience for our family. Our daughter really enjoyed it. Chef was very kind and the Ramen was delicious.
Do yourself a favor and book this ramen bowl painting and making class right now! Located in the beautiful Gion area (with a wonderfully cute walk to get there), this was easily one of our favorite activities. The space is beautiful and the attention to detail is amazing. Our instructor, Sherry, was incredibly fun and interactive, keeping everyone engaged. Painting the bowls was great, but making (and eating!) the ramen was the absolute best part. Highly recommended for families. 10/10!
We had an amazing time with Sherry and Makoto! The ramen portion of the course is about 30-40 minutes long, where they explain the ramen process, learn some facts and history, and assemble your ramen bowl. I’m not exaggerating when I say this was the best ramen we had during our time in Japan. My boyfriend and I happened to be the only people in our class, so we got to talk with the employees more one on one and they were so nice and friendly. They gave us some idea on how to spend the rest of our time in Kyoto, and talked to us like old friends! We also had a really fun time painting our spoons! They turned out great and it was a really fun souvenir to take back home. We would love to come back again because we had such a good time! Just getting to eat that ramen was worth going to the class, but we got so much more than that with this experience.
Ended up having a private class with just the 2 of us, it could have been awkward but Sherry was hilarious and broke the ice. Food = good Spoon Art = average (potentially my own fault) Bag of Pikachu = cute
Such a fun experience and we all learned a lot about ramen! Definitely recommend!!
It was a fun experience and the ramen was delicious. We loved painting the spoons. Thank you for a great memory.
This was a highlight of our entire trip to Kyoto! My husband took our three kids (ages 12,11,8) and they had a great time and loved the food. I highly recommend for anyone who loves ramen, enjoys cooking or just wants to have a fun time! My kids are helping write the review and tell me I should give it 100,000 stars.
Fantastic ramen and a fun and authentic activity! Went as a family, fun for all. Painting ramen spoons was the icing on top!
It was a bit hard to find, down an alley around the corner of where Apple Maps thought it was. The teachers were very kind and informative and went above and beyond to take pictures for us. Not to mention the ramen was 10/10!
Awesome balance of informative, demonstrative, and active. The hosts were extremely outgoing and passionate about the experience.
Very enjoyable with the family. The Ramen was amazing. We got the recipe, so hopefully we can get close to the flavours in that broth when we try and cook it at home. Painting the spoons was fun and we appreciated them mailing the spoons to our next destination. We were leaving Kyoto the next morning so didn't have time to pick them up.
The ramen. Making experience was amazing. Very personal, fun, exciting, and memorable. Very small as it was just our family, and the staff were very upbeat and fun. Made the experience that much more enjoyable! Best parr was being able to eat after making it all yourself. I highly recommend this experience!
What an experience. I originally missed my scheduled class due to my arrival to Kyoto being delayed. I was able to book a class the next day and had the best time. Everything was so genuine and thorough on what goes into the process, something that I can tell is very close to Shin's heart. Would highly recommend and Shin is a fantastic host.
Had a great time with my 14 year old son. Staff were so friendly. The ramen was a blast to make and absolutely delicious. Highly recommend this experience if you are in Kyoto.
Very fun cooking and learning experience. We were taught, step by step, the methodology behind the ramen, it's components, and it's history. So much work goes into making ramen that we never realized. The hands on ramen making was a blast as well, and our our instructors were very funny and energetic. Getting to eat it at the end was icing on the cake. The ramen was delicious and unique; having been awarded multiple Michelin stars was by no means by accident. After the cooking class we were able to paint our own ramen spoons. Unfortunately, my wife lost our paperwork with the instructions on how to unlock the locker to retrieve our spoon's the following day (the spoons are placed in a kiln after painting and then into a locker outside the following day for ease of pickup). So, although we won't get it spoons, overall the class was fantastic and we would highly recommend visiting Shin for a class of your own!
Such a fun and immersive experience! Sherry was hilarious to cook alongside with and Shin was super knowledgeable about the cooking and ingredients. Highly recommend
My partner and I were lucky enough to do this together with just the two of us and our teachers; Sherry and Shin (the cofounder of Musoshin!). They were both so unbelievably kind and funny, but both so knowledgable and helpful in the ramen making process! They were super accommodating and it was definitely the highlight of our Kyoto trip, could not recommend this enough! Plus the ramen is the best I’ve ever had!
We had a great time! Very welcoming hosts. Learned about making delicious ramen and had fun painting our spoons!
My daughter and I had a wonderful experience here! The food, staff and ramen Michelin class were top notch. We even got to paint our own spoons! Don’t pass on this. Great for families, solo travelers or couples.
I hate to leave a bad review, but I want others to hear another perspective. The instructors were very nice, but based on reading the other reviews I thought we'd be taught by the owners. Instead, it was 2 young men. I thought we would be painting a ramen spoon which we could use at home, but it was a much larger hot pot spoon. Overall, the class felt kind of gimmicky. I was on the fence whether I wanted to spend so much money on this class for my family, but I had taken cooking classes in other countries and loved it. This was disappointing and in my opinion not worth the money. On the positive side, the location is accessed inside a beautiful alley, the instructors were nice and the meat broth was very good.
Had a lovely experience cooking ramen with partner and the food was absolutely incredible! My partner is vegetarian and it was really nice finding a ramen place that catered to vegetarians and vegans. The spoon painting was a lovely touch aswell!
Great time for adults and kids. The ramen is delicious, probably the best I have ever had. Shin is a master at making exceptional ramen and everyone was so patient, helpful and kind.
what a fun experience and the ramen was the best i've had in Japan. It is really hard to find so give yourself lots of time but it is worth the effort. Bowl and spoon paint was a lot of fun and will be treasured at home.
Makoto and Mickey are charming informative hosts. Painting a souvenir is fun, and learning how to make their award winning ramen is a blast. They even took video of us, a wonderful keepsake and memory. The ramen is delicious, geared for carnivores or vegetarian. This is a smile-for-2-hours experience
I booked a workshop with my fiance and sister. Shin (the owner) and his assistant were incredibly welcoming. We chose the spoon painting option and had fun making out personalized souvenir to take home. The hosts were flexible when we needed a little more time to finish painting. The venue was clean and organized. The cooking portion was fairly simple, closer to ramen "assembling" than ramen making. However when asked, Shin and his team kindly went into great detail of the steps, ingredients, and process required to make the ramen, and even printed off a recipe for me to take home. This workshop is great for groups as you will get lots of photo opportunities. I was very pleased and would recommend!
This was so much fun! Best ramen we’ve ever had and Shin was fantastic. We cooked the pork broth and vegetarian options, and then had time to paint our spoons.
Very tasty recipes, vegetarian option available and delicious. The Chef and assistant were full of energy, excited and welcomed us there warmly.
Fun spoon painting and delicious ramen making, we learned a lot. The team at Musoshin were very friendly and helpful, highly recommend.
A fun and entertaining few hours with a delicious lunch and bowls to take home. Some tips on how to get a lovely creamy ramen broth
We went as a family, 3 adults and 2 kids (ages 10 and 4) in July 2025. We absolutely loved our experience! Shin is a wonderful host and teacher, very patient and kind. He is also an expert in his field and shares a lot of interesting information. We found both parts of the activity (painting ramen spoons and cooking ramen) really delighful, fun and exciting! We wholeheartedly recommend it to everyone!
Excellent customer service from Shin - went the extra mile to make sure we were able to get our fired spoons. Great communication both before and after the class. Plus, the best ramen we’ve ever eaten. Bonus points for the vegetarian option. Our favourite activity from our recent trip to Japan.
Master Shin was absolutely incredible! Friendly, knowledgeable and so incredibly hardworking ! We had the pleasure of having a class with him, he was so gentle with my son and very engaging. Can't believe a credible chef owner is still so hands on. Highly recommend !!
We painted our ramen spoons, learnt about how to make the ingredients, and practiced making our very own ramen dish; which tasted delicious! It was an enjoyable experience for both adults and kids, I highly recommend it. Thank you Shin for being our host and teacher.
Painted on ceramic spoons which was cool you get to keep them as a souvenir! The ramen was delicious !!!! I wish we made the noodles though, if we did I would have given 5 stars. Cute place! And great photos
We did this as a family of 4, our kids 5 & 8 said it was the best activity all trip! They love ramen!! The food is delicious and by far the best ramen we have had in Japan. Such a nice experience to paint your own ramen spoon, learn how to make ramen and put it all together! Perfect for little ones who can have a short attention span. Thanks for a great experience
We highly recommend this class. It was definitely one of the highlights of our trip to Kyoto. We learned to prepare a bowl of ramen soup from a master chef and restaurateur who was so gracious to us and enjoyable to talk with.
The teacher is an experienced chef with his own ramen restaurant, so he (really wonderful) and his assistant (also terrific!) gave us a great experience. Food was delicious, they handled my allergies really well, and we did spoon painting which was a lot of fun and will be a memorable souvenir. Thank you.
The Ramen was amazing. Learning the small tips and tricks to the perfect ramen was something we really enjoyed. The staff was extremely helpful and very easy to communicate with. I would totally recommend for couples and families.
As a lover of Ramen i enjoyed this class as it gave me better tips for making y vegan ramen at home. Everyone was very nice and professional. I didn’t realize that the painted spoon had to be baked in a kiln overnight so i wasn’t able to paint mine as i was leaving for home the next day. So consider that if your are leaving Kyoto early the next day. Otherwise i loved the class the chefs and my No Ramen No Life T-Shirt!
Me and my husband went on 29 July to do the spoon painting class. Both Shin and Makoto were wonderful hosts, and it was all very well explained. They even gave the recipe for their ramen, and it was absolutely delicious. I could not recommend it more :)!
This experience was a 10 out 10! Shin is awesome and the ramen we made was delicious! We decorated our spoons on the second floor. Then we went downstairs to prepare the meal. One of my family members is a vegetarian and Shin was able to accommodate with vegan/vegetarian options.
It was really great!!! The cook was super nice! We had an incredible time
