Meet your friendly local instructor at our traditional Kyoto studio and begin by learning about shodō, the Japanese art of calligraphy. You’ll discover the meaning and cultural background of Japanese calligraphy before getting hands-on with the traditional tools. Learn how to hold and control the brush, prepare your ink, and practice the basic brush strokes used to create Japanese characters. Your instructor will demonstrate each technique and provide step-by-step guidance, making the experience easy and enjoyable even if you have never tried calligraphy before. Once you are comfortable with the brush, practice writing kanji characters on traditional Japanese paper. You can choose meaningful Japanese words or characters and receive personalized guidance as you create your own calligraphy artwork. Enjoy the workshop in a traditional tatami-style setting and take your time practicing, asking questions, and improving your technique. You can also wear a kimono during the experience for a premium session and take photos in the traditional Kyoto setting. At the end of the workshop, take home your completed calligraphy artworks as unique handmade souvenirs of your time in Kyoto.
It was a very informative and fun class. You not only get to learn about the history of calligraphy in Japan but you also get to practice many different kanji letters and basic strokes. Our instructor Jansi was phenomenal! This is a must book event for your trip！

An absolutely wonderful experience! The calligraphy workshop was incredibly fun and full of pleasant surprises. We learned the basics of calligraphy and got to practice writing letters ourselves. The instructor was highly professional and incredibly patient, and the beautiful background music created the perfect atmosphere. It was simply charming and I highly recommend it!

A really fun and relaxing experience with calligraphy and writing kanji for 45 min. It was 1000 yen per person through gettyourguide. The place is small and feels like a small workshop. The instructor had really great proficiency with English, gave clear instructions and explained the history behind the art. Overall a highly recommended experience!! 11/10!!

We absolutely loved this workshop. It was such a fun and memorable way to experience Japanese culture and learn about traditional calligraphy. The whole experience lasted around an hour and a half, which felt like the perfect amount of time. Wearing kimonos made it even more special and really added to the atmosphere. The calligraphy workshop itself was fascinating, and Ray was wonderful, very welcoming, patient, and passionate about what he does. One of our favorite touches was when Ray wrote our names in kanji, which made for a really unique and personal souvenir to take home. It’s a great experience for groups of friends, but also perfect for couples looking to spend some quality time together while doing something unique and memorable in Kyoto. Everything felt warm, authentic, and thoughtfully organized. Definitely one of the highlights of our time in Kyoto. Highly recommended! 🇯🇵❤️
Had a lovely time at SORA, our instructor was friendly and skilled, taught us about the history and it was fun to grind our own ink! We had loads of time to practice and try as many characters as we liked, and got to stamp our own work to take home. Would highly recommend as a relaxing and fun stop on your journey through Kyoto.

I had such a lovely time with my friend. We booked the short 45 minutes class and where there with 2 other people. The host was so nice, supportive and had a really calming energy. It made the experience extra special. I was also amazed by how cheap it was. Definitely a must try if you're interested in Japanese history and would like to do something yourself. You get to keep the Kanji you write which is such a nice souvenir to remember your time in Kyoto!

Really great experience, the guide spoke pretty much perfect English as he'd studied in the USA. He explained how to form and write the Kanji and their meaning. The place felt very authentic, and we got a nice gift to take home at the end of a Kanji of whatever we wanted on a nice scroll.
