Aya-san was so knowledgeable!
One of our favorite experiences in Kyoto! We loved learning about the history and significance of the tea ceremony which made the actual practice that much more special. The traditional setting provided an ambiance that enhanced the immersive experience resulting in an unforgettable memory! Highly recommend our host - she expertly guided our experience and answered all our questions. To be able to purchase matcha tea and one-of-a-kind artist made tea cups is great for those who want to continue the practice at home.
The tea ceremony is held in Aya’s home, and the tea room is beautiful. You’ll receive a clear explanation of the history of the tea ceremony and matcha, observe the ceremony itself (I wish I had asked more questions at the time), and have the chance to whisk your own second cup. Aya also provides a couple of recommendations on where to buy tea locally. Note that the water is not boiling—the actual temperature is around 80°C. If it’s hotter, you may ruin the tea, so keep that in mind when preparing it yourself. Many thanks Aya, Robin Soole
The tea ceremony was very cool, but the 5 star review is due to Aya herself. She was sweet and personable from beginning to end, and showed a real willingness to help us that went outside of the scope of duties of teaching us about tea! For example, she was helpful in giving us directions to Osaka, our next stop, and saved us money in her recommendations. She also made us aware that it is Golden Week (a long holiday weekend in Japan) and urged us to book our bullet train tickets for our trip from Osaka to Tokyo sooner rather than later. Because of her, we got tickets just in time, and were able to select the option of traveling with large luggage. If we hadn’t done that, we would have been in trouble, and couldn’t have taken our suitcases with us! She even called us a taxi after the service and waited until we got in safely. In conclusion: Aya is the best part of the tea ceremony. We loved meeting her and having tea with her. I’m sure you will, too.
My husband and I left the tea ceremony and both agreed it was probably the best thing we’ve done on our trip. It was detailed, educational and fun. It is absolutely worth it for a hands-on, true experience. I cannot recommend this enough. A hidden gem that will bring the culture of Kyoto to life!
This was the best thing I have ever done in Japan, hands down. Aya was extremely friendly, knowledgeable, and truly made our experience special. I had accidentally booked the experience for one person when it was for two people and she allowed me to pay the difference and modified the ceremony on the spot. She also gave us recommendations for food places and all of them were fantastic. We purchased her custom matcha and we are excited to make it at home. My fiancee and I agreed this was a truly incredible experience and well worth the money.
We can highly recomend this place. The tea master is originally from Kyoto. She is very knowledgeable and sympathetic. The ceremony itself was wonderful and we learned a lot.
The tea ceremony lesson was excellent and smooth. The explanation was comprehensive, detailed, and connected to Japanese tradition. The host was very professional, kind, and welcoming. highly recommend
Aya welcomed us into our home and it was beautiful She spent her time explaining the importance and the meaning behind each step and actions And it literally felt like if I was some fuedual samurai being served tea honourably. It was a truly wonderful and cultural experience Will 100% recommend It's more authentic than the other tea ceremony Because you're not being treated as a tourist but a genuine guest.
Aya-sensei is an incredible master of her art. She led such a beautiful team ceremony. From the minute we entered her tea ceremony room every moment was savoured, all 5 senses drawn upon and enjoyed. Highly recommend this experience. Aya is a true professional, with a warmth and friendliness that enables you to really feel comfortable to ask questions and soak up the whole experience!
This was an intimate tea ceremony in a local Kyoto resident's home. Located just a 6 minute walk from Hotel Mitsui, this experience was a highlight of our time in Kyoto! We loved the host, her energy, knowledge of the tea ceremony as well as being cognizant to American visitors.
This was a wonderful way to learn about the Tea Ceremony in Japan. The instructor is a very lovely lady. We were invited into her home to learn about this old tradition. She was so kind and welcoming. She explained how the ceremony started back in time and then took us into a traditional tea room to show us how to make and serve the tea. It was a lovely way to spend some time seeing a traditional Japanese house and learn about the Tea Ceremony.
Aya-sensei is a wonderful, knowledgeable, and engaging host. This experience is a perfect blend of informative and hands-on. Highly recommend!
I am so relieved we chose this experience over the more touristy large group tea ceremonies. Aya-san was an incredible teacher, and it was a pleasure to both connect as humans and to learn about the history and meaning of the tea ceremony. If you are looking for a meaningful cultural experience with delightful tea, sweets, conversation, and more, I would recommend going with Sakura!
Aya is a lovely host and so knowledgeable! She was able to make this experience both informative and truly fun for us and our teen daughter. This was the highlight of our trip to Tokyo and I’m so glad we did it.
Wonderful experience. Great to get an insight into the tea ceremony. Our lovely host carefully explained the background and procedures of the ancient tea ceremony. We then got to perform part of the ceremony too which was a wonderful experience. Something to remember!
Aya, our host, was superb. Her home is amazing and she is a real artist! This was a very special experience.
What an incredibly positive & immersive cultural experience! Aya is a dedicated and wonderful teacher with deep expertise, passion and connection to the Tea Ceremony. Although just an hour long, we were talking about this visit for days and it helped grow our appreciation for Japanese culture (and Tea!) throughout our trip.
The tea teacher is very kind and knowledgeable and speaks excellent English. She has many beautiful bowls and delicious tea. I highly recommend this experience.
This was such a special experience, learning about tea and the importance of the ceremony. I highly recommend going and really embracing all that you will be taught. The sweets were one of a kind and after we bought a beautiful tea cup to remember our time.
Aya was a wonderful guide for this experience. We felt welcomed and truly enjoyed learning about traditional facets of a tea ceremony. We had no idea how many details were meticulously considered for each and every ceremony and guest. It was definitely a highlight of our trip.
I had no appreciation for the significance and nuance of the tea ceremony in Japanese culture! Aya did an amazing job of educating us and bringing this beautiful tradition to life. I learned so much in this hour to appreciate deep Japanese traditions. I highly recommend this experience.
An incredible hostess who welcomed us into her beautiful home, Aya is obviously a master of her craft and it was a privilege to learn about the art of tea making from her. Would highly recommend
This is exactly the kind of tea ceremony I had in mind when I booked it. We felt Aya's dedication to, reverence for and artistry of her craft. It was a beautiful and moving experience. I cannot recommend her highly enough.
This was a wonderful insight into the ceremony performed by someone with who had been doing the ceremony for decades. She was very happy to answer as many questions as you had as well.
The place is located in a nice quiet neighbourhood - away from the bustling crowds in kyoto. Enjoyed the tea ceremony with Aya san. Wagashi and tea were excellent. Appreciate that it included brief history on tea ceremonies and the purpose of each room and process.
Aya-san is a warm and hospitable host and we thoroughly enjoyed our traditional Japanese tea ceremony with her. We learned so much about the history and tradition and will never forget the experience. The tea room that she and her husband recently renovated was so lovely and the perfect space to enjoy the ceremony. Her attention to detail from the selection of the sweet treats that accompany the service, to the tea, the art and everything in between were ideal.
What a delightful experience at the tea master's home! We learned so much about the ceremony of tea making, and our host and husband were so kind and inviting. For one hour, we learned about the importance of tea brewing and why this tradition exists. Traditions are so important to keep alive and teach, especially to foreigners, so we also understand them. Don't miss this experience.
Aya was a wonderful hostess. It was incredibly special to be able to learn about tea ceremonies and be part of one in her home. The only way to experience a real tea ceremony, is in a small, intimate setting. My husband did a class with 20 of his co-workers in Tokyo, and while he learned a lot, it was definitely more meditative. The price for a private tea ceremony was very reasonable and her instructions made it easy to find the location. Aya also has other classes such as flower arrangements - if I was staying longer, I would have taken one with her. Sadly we had to leave. For more info. on other classes, look for the Sakura Experience Japanese Culture Kyoto website. I will definitely be referring her to my friends heading to Japan.
Aya was the perfect tea master. She explained the history and showed all the steps of a tea ceremony in a serene, calm way. A must do in Kyoto
Our experience at Aya-San’s tea ceremony was the most authentic and exciting thing we did in Kyoto, and among the best things I’ve done in all of Japan. From the moment we entered, Aya made us feel welcomed and relaxed. I highly recommend this activity to anyone that is looking for an authentic Japanese experience in the ancient capital of Kyoto.
What an incredible experience!! We learned so much and completely enjoyed the hands on education. Aya had great communication via WhatsApp prior to our arrival and really great English. It was easy to understand everything she explained. Her husband took photos the entire time, which they sent to us while we were still there. This gave us the chance to be fully immersed in the experience. An absolute must do if you are going to Kyoto!
I loved the detail in everything leading up to the ceremony. Thank you so much for the best possible experience.
A truly beautiful and educational experience with a wonderfully kind tea master. Aya and her husband talked us through the ceremony and patiently answered our questions. When they saw that we are older people , and my husband with a bad back, stools were produced for our comfort. An unexpected bonus was that Aya’s husband took a number of photos during the ceremony which he later shared with us as lovely souvenirs of a memorable hour or so.
Our Tea Master was superb. We were made to feel honored and welcome in her home. The whole experience was very special indeed - a truly memorable and meaningful experience. Thank you to Viator as well for enabling this at such short notice
Aya was the perfect hostess. She explained everything beautifully, and gently guided us through the whole process. We walked away with a great deal of appreciation for the ritual, and for her as well, given how many years she has been training to do this perfectly. One of the highlights of our visit to Kyoto!
Lovely experience! Very informative of the ceremony. They were patient, kind and talked about the history as they welcomed us into their home. Highlight of the trip for us.
While I anticipated wearing a kimono as outlined in my booking, I found the tea ceremony experience to be truly exceptional.
This was a highlight of our two weeks in Japan! Very knowledgeable and inspired me to creat my own matcha and ritual. The matcha was delicious and she spoke very good English and was so patient with us. I would highly recommend. Also a great location; you can walk to Nijo castle afterwards.
This was an incredible experience to get to share and learn about the art of tea and participate in a tea ceremony (including making tea ourselves) from a Tea Master herself.
The hosts were so friendly and patient. We learned a lot and had a fun time. The tea room was lovely and the tea was delicious.
This was a great experience - definitely one of the highlights of our 10 day trip to Japan. Well worth it if you are in Kyoto. Not only was it a fun time but she took many great pictures for us to remember the occasion.
We had a phenomenal experience at the tea ceremony! Aya and her husband were so kind and accommodated us even though we were a bit late. The experience was informative and we learned a ton. Highly recommended!
An excellent experience. My wife sprained her ankle just before going. They helped take care of her and gave an outstanding tea ceremony experience. Would definitely recommend.
I was amazed. They were incredibly hospitable and friendly. This is one of my best memories ever. Watching the tea teacher prepare tea was pure art. I highly recommend this experience. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and this important piece of Japanese culture. Luca
Interesting and educational experience. Very informative. Tea and candies were delicious as well. Would recommend to anyone who wants a traditional experience in Kyoto.
It was a wonderful learning experience-and it was so nice to be in a private home settings with a lovely and deeply knowledgeable host! I would highly recommend it.
Fantastic tea sermoni! This was the part of our honeymoon that I thought was the nicest and most memorable part of our entire trip. The host was so nice, and pleasant. We were so appreciative that we were allowed to enter her home to be part of a traditional tea ceremony
We loved learning about the nuances and subtleties of the Japanese Tea Ceremony. No matter how badly we mangled the Japanese language or bumbled the ceremonial instructions our hosts were gracious and fun. Most enjoyable!
