Known as ‘Kyoto’s Kitchen’, Nishiki Market is a lively and busy indoor market filled with vendors selling everything from seasonal food and Kyoto specialties to produce, knives, and even cookware. Joseph was a very knowledgeable guide. We learned a lot about Japanese culture and sampled many types of food that we had never eaten before.
Very nice to have a guide through the market since we were unfamiliar with a lot of the foods. Perfect to do right when you get into town! Dineth was very kind and informative.
My tour guide Akiko is so good and very polite entire tour and explain thing very nicely
Joseph was personal and professional. Easy to follow, familiar with the terrain and very gracious. We are very happy with our tour!
Tour guide was not local and not familiar with the market. Maria (from Pakistan) was not prepared and not knowledgable, could not provide recommendations or much explanations of the foods. Knew little Japanese language and had trouble getting to destinations. We have taken other food tours while in Japan and this was by far the worst experience, very disappointing and felt overpriced for the experience. Definetly would not recommend. We ended it shortly because it was a complete waste of our short time in Kyoto. It would have been better to just use google maps or AI directly as it would have been more informative and efficient.
Perfect tour to get to know through a local the typical Kyoto food market. jasmine was great at showing us around and she bought the food herself to make things easier for us! Would recommend if you have a couple of hours of spare time and an empty stomach.
Jasmine was a great guide in the Nishiki Market. She took us to four different food vendors and encouraged us to stop whenever we wanted. She is friendly, warm, with perfect English. Highly recommend and go early, before the crowds gather.
Brooke was a great tour guide who helped out with our dietary restrictions. We had fun, learned a lot, and ate well! The meetup was smooth and easy. Highly recommend this tour!
The Nishiki Market Tour is memorable and enjoyable. We were able to taste many dishes as we walked through the market. Our guide was informative, pleasant, and communicative. The directions to the meeting point were clear and accurate. We were able to locate our guide easily and promptly.
This food tour is a MUST do! Book with Jasmine. She is outstanding and it will be the highlight of your trip.
The best tour ever! Our guide, Jasmine, patiently explained the different dishes and types of food to us. We tried delicious food, and Jasmine took care of our tastes. She helped us choose the products. Jasmine was wonderful with us; it was a great experience. Absolutely worth it.
Our guide gave us many helpful tips for foods we should try at Nishiki market. We tried beef, tempura, gyoza, shrimp, a donut, and delicious desert. He also told us about the shrine at the end of the market.
Vincent was such an excellent guide! I enjoyed how he tailored the experience for us. My girlfriend was more into history than food.
This was a very engaging and interesting tour for me and my 3 teenagers - we learned about local food, history, and culture. Our guide Boris was a delight! I expected a bit more food for eating but it was fine - with the knowledge we gained it was easy to navigate the market ourselves right after the tour to get some more food.
Our guide was very nice and showed our family all the good places to eat and ordered food for us to try
Mao was the absolute best!!! Do NOT second guess a tour with her. Request HER! She’s awesome! Not only did she show us great food but she also showed us Japanese customs and traditions. She kept it real…never pulling the tourist wool over our eyes, but rather keeping us aware and away from scams and having very honest conversations about Japan and its authentic culture. She’s so pleasant and makes you feel like you’re reconnecting with an old friend.
Mao was outstanding - HIGHLY recommend. She is kind, warm and fun. Her passion for her hometown of Kyoto was contagious. 5 stars!!!
This tour was a treat in every way. Our guide, Boris, was so personable, knowledgeable, and interesting to spend time with. Having him guide us through the market was excellent as it may have been overwhelming all on our own. The selection is vast and he was able to steer us to terrific options, all delicious, very local, and everyone clearly knew him and were so friendly. Boris also gave us a really interesting perspective on Kyoto and Japan, as well as giving us historical background information as well as details about local agriculture. We'd recommend Boris and a visit to Nishiki Market to any visitor!
Alex was a great guide with lots of background information and explanations. He guided us deftly through the stalls and made this a great experience.
Our guide was great! It was private with just myself and my husband. Our guide took us to some great spots. It was also super flexible so we could try what we wanted, rather than sticking to specific foods. Although our guide was great at recommending stuff! My only critique would be to make it clearer the tour has a more flexible approach as it wasn't clear when we booked. I would suggest making that clearer on the booking itself. Regardless, would recommend!
Great time with our guide weaving through the market! Explanation of the variety of foods and goods was very helpful. Perfect amount of time for families with youngsters
Our favorite Viator experience! A charming, delightful, fun, smart guide was our escort through a crowded market, stopping at a variety of stalls to introduce us to food he said were his favorites--all delicious (couldn't eat the live octopus pieces!). Had a great sense of humor; took us to a restaurant where we had drinks and fun games while sampling food. Loved the experience. Especially because the guide was TERRIFIC!!!!
Nice tour with Brooke - it filled our time before returning by bullet train to Tokyo. The markets are great with tremendous variety of foods and things to buy
We took this tour as part of our five-day trip through Kyoto. We were excited to explore the market with a guide, but we were a bit dispapointed overall. Our guide, Kats, was friendly but he didn't do a great job of explaining the history of the market and of the various foods we ate. He kind of just showed us some foods in Daimaru and Nishiki Market and bought them for us. Often, these were similar foods to what we got on food tours in Tokyo and Osaka. We felt that we could've done this ourselves and that the tour was not worth the cost we paid. I'd recommend Kats brush up on his story-telling and home in on foods, or variations of foods, that you can only get in Kyoto.
We had a fantastic time touring Nishiki Market and the department store area with Boris. He was a great guide and shared a lot of fun stories and facts about the market. We really enjoyed all the food and the snacks, and how easy he made everything.
Our guide was very knowledgeable and friendly. He took us through the food displays of a modern department store snd then through the old Nishiki market. The contrast was great. He purchased food items for us to try and educated us on those items. We enjoyed the tour and glad we did it.
Super fun tour with Katz. So glad for the department store food portion of the tour. I would not have had any idea how cool this was. We went back several times! My girls weren’t as into trying all the things but we found success ;) Thank you, Katz!
Boris was an "ABSOLUTE HERO". My cab driver got miserably LOST. Boris communucated with me to get us there. His first impression was a caring, sincere person who was very professional in his role and caring for the tourist joining him. He guided me thru the tour site explaining everything and more about the market. He picked out the besties and we sampled many foods. YUM!! I see him as a forever friend in meeting him for such a short time period. He was an impactful person in a beautiful way and so knowledgable about everything on his tour. Passionate about providing above and beyond in his role. As a hiring manager myself for decades in top corporations in the USA for decades. I'd hire him in a minute.
Friendly and approachable guide, we would have preferred more local information and history of the food and the market. There were plenty of tasting opportunities
Ai was excellent and I would absolutely recommend this tour. There was some pretty exotic foods which my stomach couldn't handle but the ones that I could were absolutely amazing! Ai really knew the market intimately and shared a bit of history about the stores as well as pointing out some of the best spots to eat.
