Wonderful tour with Machiko! She was very knowledgeable and I learned a lot from her! It was a unique experience that I wont forget! The geiko was elegant, funny, and a great story teller! The meiko, Hidetowa, was so graceful and patient. I also met some wonderful woman who were also solo traveling. We actually got dinner afterwards! Thanks Machiko, for a unforgettable tour! Highly recommend this unique experience!

Itinerary
While walking through this beautiful part of Gion, a guide will tell you about who geishas in Kyoto are and their lifestyle .
Tatsumi Daimyojin is a Shinto shrine in Kyoto, dedicated to a deity of protection, good fortune, and safety, especially for travelers and warriors. It was founded during the Heian period (794-1185) and is located in the Tatsumi area. Historically, it has been linked to the imperial family and samurai. The shrine features typical Shinto architecture and is known for its scenic beauty, particularly during cherry blossom season.
Tatsumi Bridge is a small traditional bridge located in a corner of Gion that feels like stepping into a scene from a movie. The area around Tatsumi Bridge is filled with charming wooden machiya houses, traditional tea houses, and the tranquil Shirakawa Canal. The area is particularly beautiful during cherry blossom season and in the evenings when the lanterns illuminate the historic streets, offering a magical atmosphere.
Hanamikoji Street is a main street in Gion. This charming street is lined with traditional wooden machiya houses, tea houses, shops and restaurants, exuding an atmosphere of old-world elegance. Hanami-koji is especially renowned for its well-preserved architecture and its association with Kyoto’s geisha culture, where you might spot geiko (geisha in Kyoto) and maiko gracefully walking.
Gion Corner is a unique cultural venue which showcases a variety of traditional art performances that highlight Kyoto's rich cultural heritage. The venue provides a comprehensive introduction to the traditional arts, often performed by skilled practitioners. This venue is a beloved spot for both Japanese and international tourists, offering a convenient and accessible way to appreciate the depth of Kyoto’s artistic traditions.
The oldest Zen Buddhist temple in Kyoto located next to a geisha district Gion. We will not enter the temple buildings but walk through the temple precinct like locals and feel Zen.
Enjoy the professional performance at a traditional tea house. The tour guide will translate for you, so you can understand the culture, and history deeper, also you'll be able to have a conversation with Maiko and a teahouse owner to know the real voice.

Instructive, elegant and visually stunning
It was great having a tour round Gion with a guide who was very knowledgeable. Experiencing the Geisha Meiko and the Tea House owner was very interesting.
Its hard for me to express what a moving experience and privilege it was to be invited into the world behind the doors of the ochiya and the lives of the okaasan and meiko san. This was an exceptional tour led by the very knowledgeable Keiko San. The meiko san Fumìmaru was the embodiment of grace and beauty. Don’t miss this.
Hiromi was a fantastic guide. Warm, knowledgeable, and clearly passionate about what she was showing us. The tour was well organized and relaxed, and we learned so much while actually having fun. And the maiko performance and Q&A session were something else, so unique and very real. We absolutely loved it. Highly recommend this tour!
Fantastic, unique experience. Guides spoke excellent English and knowledgable. Answered all our questions. Highly recommend.
Great tour and tour guide! Enjoyed the tour very much and the information shared by Miho. The Maiko meet and greet was extraordinary. Cindy M
This was one of the standout experiences of our time in Kyoto. Our guide, Yuki, was extremely knowledgeable and gave us fascinating insight into the history, traditions and different geiko districts we visited. She explained so much that we would never have understood simply walking through Gion on our own. The weather was absolutely torrential, which made guiding much more difficult, and she also had a supervisor with her that day. Despite that, she remained engaging, informative and clearly very knowledgeable throughout. The real highlight came at the end of the tour, when we met a retired geiko who now owns a teahouse. She gave a fascinating talk about the history of geiko and maiko, going all the way back to the shogun era and bringing the story through to the present day. She explained how the culture has evolved, what has changed, and how important it is to preserve the dance, music, craftsmanship and traditions so that this history is not lost. We then watched a beautiful maiko perform four dances, accompanied by the retired geiko playing the shamisen. It was an extraordinary setting and felt very intimate. Afterwards, we were invited to ask our own questions and have a photograph taken. What made the experience even more special was that we were allowed to take photos and videos throughout the performance, which is such a rare opportunity in the geiko and maiko world. A really memorable, educational and beautifully handled experience. Highly recommended for anyone who wants to understand the culture rather than simply see it from the outside.
We truly wanted to explore Gion and experience the meeting with a maiko in a tea house. I truly want to thank you Saeko, who was an excellent guide. Her explanations and her kindness was really appreciated! I also would like to thank the owner of the tea house, for welcoming us and her thoughtfulness (ice cream were really appreciated) It was an unforgetable experience! I am glad we had the opportunity to catch a little bit of this mysterious and beautiful world
I rented a kimono which was very easy. I picked the kimono and sash and the lady dressed me. I then met up with the guide and she was very nice. We walked around Gion and she explained the Geisha culture more. We then went to a house and watched a performance by the Maiko. It was really a great experience! They talked about their life, and a day in the life, through the guide’s translation. We asked questions at the end a took photos with the Maiko. I was able to return the kimono to the rental place with plenty of time. Really great experience!!
Booked this because a friend wanted to "see a geisha". Ayu was our guide and she did a fantastic job! She took photos for everyone at iconic spots within Gion and was very knowledgeable when asked questions off-the-cuff. The highlight of the trip was the Ochaya visit. Going in, I didn't expect much from this portion; I thought it'd be more of a quick fly-by of a Maiko so that the gimmick of the tour would be met. Boy, was I wrong. The owner of the Ochaya is a former Geiko and she spent probably 20-30 minutes talking to us about her time as a maiko & geiko, about buying and operating the ochaya, etc. In my opinion, the owner was the star of the show! Her experience entertaining/hosting really shows. I am not quite sure how to explain it, but she has a presence that makes you want to happily listen. If it were possible, I'd try to book an hour with her just to hear more stories! Everything was translated wonderfully by Ayu throughout the time in the ochaya - kudos to Ayu for translating so much and so accurately! The maiko performed 2 dances while accompanied by the owner. A description/explanation was given prior to each dance so that we could follow along. The maiko was stunning in her kimono and makeup and danced beautifully. There was maybe a 10 minute Q&A at the end followed by a chance to take a photo with the maiko. The Q&A could have been longer, but considering the cost of 45 minutes with a maiko, it'd probably increase the cost of the tour significantly.
I've bought this experience to offer to a great friend that loves Japanese culture. The experience was so rich that in the end all of us learned a lot about Kyoto and the daily lives of Maiko and Geiko Harumi, our guide, was very helpful and spoke great english, I would recommend this experience to anyone interesting in knowing more about Kyoto and the Maiko and Geiko culture.
Seako was a great guide to show us around the Gion district. Her knowledge of all the tea houses and the stories that make the district come alive. Her connections to the gieko and maiko helped us understand the traditions and helped us communicate with the artist. The dance and music was beautiful. This is the best way to learn and immerse yourself in the culture. An excellent tour!
Amazing tour through Gion and getting to meet a Maiko, It was a glimpse into the Geisha culture and being able to see a personal performance in the tea house was a rare opportunity that I will never forget. Our guide Yuji was awesome, (excellent english and very friendly) he interpreted everything that the tea house owner was telling us about the history of Geisha and was always a pleasure to talk to. Would highly recommend this tour to anyone who is visiting Gion. One of the few tours where you can actually go into a working teahouse
Best tour we took in Kyoto! Taka was very friendly and knowledgeable about the temples. He really made us feel welcome. We would recommend to anyone visiting Kyoto!
What an amazing tour! We had Naomi and she was extremely informative and super kind. Would definitely recommend this tour and if you get Naomi, you’re so lucky! Thank you Naomi, this was the highlight of our trip. Regards, Claudette and Alana :)
Excellent experience. Our guide was very knowledgeable about the history of the area. Being able to hear first hand about how dedicated these ladies are and how much hard work is required to what is unfortunately a declining profession was amazing and having a private performance of their craft was incredible. Knowing that this tour was helping support these ladies was an added bonus.
Brillant and unique experience. Me and my husband felt like in a dream when we met and had opportunity to talk with Geiko and Maiko in person. We learned so much about Japanese culture. Our guide Mika shared many useful information and was very helpful and patient. I absolutely recommend it
I really enjoyed walking through the old streets of Kyoto and listening to the story of Maiko and Geiko. It was very nice when we were treated to ice cream and a bottle of water in the tea house where we were watching Maiko. It was very interesting to watch Maiko-san dance. Thank you very much!
I really enjoyed the experience, especially part when we can speak with Maiko san and ask different questions about their every day life. But guide explains was very short
My wife and I spent an amazing afternoon in Kyoto learning about the history, customs, and daily life of geisha. Our guide was lovely, patient, and clearly loved sharing what she knew. Meeting a maiko and a geiko in person was almost surreal. We'll never forget it, thank you so much.
A very enjoyable but thoroughly informative experience! We enjoyed very much this guide’s knowledge and expertise, we also enjoyed touring the area and of course meeting a geisha. Very unique!
We’ve only been in Japan for 36 hours, but this tour, and our tour guide Raj, were far better than we dared to hope. Raj was such an engaging guide, knowledgeable, friendly and caring. From her, we learned a lot and really got a feel for the places she showed us. We couldn’t have asked for more. Our recommendation? Do the tour and ask for Raj as your guide!
What a wonderful experience, despite the heat. I’d recommend it to all without reservation.
Excellent guide! Takuma was very friendly, polite, and knowledgeable about Kyoto’s history and culture. He explained the traditions and life of the geisha in a very interesting way and made our tour truly memorable. Highly recommended!
100% worth every penny. Our guide was very kind and helpful.
Our guide was excellent. Helpful kind and went above and beyond even walked us to our station
We had such a lovely afternoon! The walking tour gave us a great feel for the neighborhood vibe and was just the right length and detail. Our tour guide was so kind and thoughtful and the group was just the right size. The experience with the Maiko and the owner of the Tea House (a Geiko) was amazing. We loved learning the history and seeing the performance. Most of all, I’m so impressed with how generous everyone was with their time and willingness to answer questions. Worth every penny — it was absolutely a highlight of our trip.
If you are visiting Kyoto, please consider booking this intimate experience to meet the Maiko and Geiko through Japan Wonder Travel. It was a unique and deeply educational look into their lives. The tour started with a walk through the surrounding areas of Kyoto where parts of Memoirs of a Geisha were filmed. Walking the paths felt like stepping back into ancient times. Our guide, Mica, was fantastic—she patiently explained the history and unique culture of the Maiko and Geiko. It was a scorching hot summer day, but fortunately, it wasn't crowded, so we could really enjoy the atmosphere. The highlight was definitely meeting the "mother" of the Geiko house. She was incredibly graceful, and we learned so much. You normally cannot get access to an experience like this without a personal connection, so booking through Japan Wonder Travel is highly recommended. It was one of my favorite tours in Japan! Just a quick reminder to fellow travelers to always respect their privacy and ask before posting any photos online.
We had a wonderful tour! Our guide, Takuma, was very nice, punctual, he knew a lot and he took good care of us in the warm weather. Both the walking tour and the visit at the tea house with maiko en the the house mother were magical. If you havectine, just do it! Thank you Takuma!
It was a wonderful experience learning about Japanese culture. I was deeply moved watching the 400-year-old traditional dance performed right in front of me. The dancer and musicians were fantastic. Takuma did an amazing job explaining the art of geiko and the history of the flower district. Even though the art of geiko is quite complex to understand, Takuma offered clear and easy-to-follow explanations. I highly recommend this tour. You truly need to see and experience it for yourself. We were able to take photos with the geiko, and she was absolutely beautiful. Thank you, Takuma. You made my trip to Kyoto incredibly special.
It is really interesting and awesome experience to witness the performance of Maiko and to walk around Gion street. It is also safe and you will absolutely enjoy the tour.
I had such a wonderful time on this tour! It was a truly memorable experience, and I especially enjoyed two things. First, our tour guide was fantastic. They were warm, enthusiastic, and explained everything so clearly that it was easy to follow and enjoyable from beginning to end. Their storytelling really brought the experience to life. Second, I was deeply impressed by the story of what it takes to become a Maiko. I hadn’t realized how much dedication, discipline, and hard work are required. Learning about the training before meeting Hidetowa-san made her performance even more meaningful. Watching Hidetowa-san perform after hearing her journey gave me a much deeper appreciation of her skills and commitment. It wasn’t just a beautiful performance—it was inspiring to see the years of effort and passion behind it. Thank you to everyone who made this experience possible. I came away with a much greater appreciation for this beautiful part of Japanese culture, and I would highly recommend this tour to anyone visiting Japan.
This was a great tour, even though today was raining like crazy Ayu did her best and make the experience really nice. We walked around Gion and learned about Maiko and Geiko. At the end, we went to an authentic tea house and the owner explained to us in detail the history of Geiko and Maiko and then we watched one of the Maiko perform! We could ask her questions and even take pictures with her at the end! And Ayu was the one translating everything for us. It really was an amazing experience, 100% recommend.
We went to see geiko and maiko performance. We also got to talk to them and hear about their experiences which was very interesting.
Very kind to have lent me socks for the tea house.
I recommend for those who love art and history. The guide is kind, was there on time and clearly communicate. Gion experience with Maiko was interesting to hear the story.
I had one of my most memorable tours in Japan, “The Maiko and Geisha District tour” Ms Mika, our guide was excellent, she was very knowledgeable about the different elements you’ll see that make up a Geisha district such as Okiya, Ochaya, the small statues at the top part of each house entrance, if you wanna know them- join her tours. She has designed us a route that allowed us to see the best of Gion Area and everything just became meaningful because of her explanation. We even encountered, interacted and took selfies and photos with a Maiko!! It was such a great joy to see her perform and being classic traditions to life. The Maiko couldn’t speak English, but Ms Mika the guide was there to make sure no language barrier will steal the joy of her tour. Great experience with a great guide! Thank you Ms Mika!!
It was a wonderful experience to walk around Gion with our English-speaking guide (Mika-san). She gave explanations with clarity. It was also fun to know the Maiko and Geisha history from a Geisha herself. The Maiko performances were very beautiful. The tour was for 3 hours. It was a small group of about 10 members, so everyone had a fair chance to interact with the Maiko and Geisha. This would be a great pick for those interested in the history of Kyoto and traditional Japanese artforms.
Such an insightful and engaging experience. Our guide Yuji was great, very helpful. Learning about geishas and maikos in a real tea house, directly speaking to one, and also watching their art was fascinating. A must have in Japan, I highly recommend.
A great day spent with Taka San to understand the history and culture of the Nara Shrines and Temples. We also got to visit a traditional Japanese area with a traditional Japanese home. Many things are closed on Tuesdays so be mindful of booking on Tuesdays. But overall Taka San ja very knowledgeable and we learned a lot b
Last week my daughter and I had the most incredible experience in Kyoto with our guide Miho, wandering through the Gion district, learning about Kyoto's famous Geisha history, learning about the Maiko-sans and their complex and ardous apprenticeship. We then had the great privilege of meeting a Maiko-san and Miho did a fabulous job translating for us and the Maiko-san. We were able to engage in conversation and ask questions about her life, her motivations and what its like to live as an apprentice Geisha. It really was the most enlightening, interesting and educational experience for me and for my teenage daughter. Miho was an incredible guide, was so patient with all our questions and pointed out small details during our walk that we would have been oblivious to without her knowledge. The afternoon was a highlight of our trip to Japan!
This was one of the highlights of our trip to Japan. The tour guide was so wonderful and we got to hear so many stories from a past Geisha and the dance was to die for. Highly recommend!
Hide was awesome. Gets lots if pictures and lots of info. Very informative great guide.
Hide was a great guide Very knowledgeable and great English
Hide was a great tour guide and we got to see many Maiko and Geiko
Great morning bicycle tour of temples and gardens in Kyoto. Highly recommend this experience! It is a great way to see the city. The three hour tour flew by! Would definitely book again next time we visit.
Great tour today. Machiko was a great guide and had a vast knowledge of everything in Gion and Kyoto.. The Meiko experience was amazing. Definitely recommend doing this tour.
An extraordinary experience!
We were very comfortable with Guide Harumi - she explained and gave just enough.information that made the tour interesting. Meeting a real Maiko was an eye opener
