Michael’s tour was 10/10. He took us around Gion and through Maruyama Park which is absolutely stunning at night. We passed by Chion In temple where he offered historical and cultural knowledge. Then made our way through Ninenzaka and Sannenzaka Street to view the pagoda. I would definitely recommend a night tour. We walked through the area both at night and during the day, and the daytime had MASSIVE crowds. Definitely do at night

Itinerary
A peaceful ribbon of water flowing through the heart of Gion. Lined with willow trees, traditional tea houses, and stone lanterns, Shirakawa feels like a step back in time. This is one of Kyoto’s most atmospheric streets, quiet, elegant, and deeply connected to the world of geisha and old-town life.
A small but powerful Shinto shrine hidden beside the canal. Dedicated to protection and good fortune, Tatsumi Shrine has long been prayed to by geisha and local residents. Its intimate size and quiet presence perfectly capture the spiritual side of everyday Kyoto.
One of Gion’s most photogenic bridges. Framed by willow trees and traditional townhouses, Tatsumi Bridge marks the heart of the Shirakawa area. It is a timeless Kyoto scene where daily life, history, and quiet beauty naturally come together.
One of Kyoto’s most impressive temples and the headquarters of the Jodo sect of Buddhism. Chion-in is famous for its massive wooden gate and its powerful, almost solemn atmosphere. Walking its grounds offers a moment of calm and reflection, while revealing the scale and influence of Buddhism in Japanese history.
Kyoto’s most famous park, loved by locals for centuries. With open paths, ponds, and seasonal scenery, Maruyama Park offers a relaxed contrast after temple visits. In spring, it becomes one of the city’s most iconic cherry blossom spots, bringing Kyoto’s social and festive spirit to life.
An elegant Western-style mansion built during the Meiji era, when Japan was opening to the world. Chourakukan reflects Kyoto’s encounter with European architecture and modern ideas, blending refinement, history, and a surprising international atmosphere in the heart of the city.
A discreet temple tucked away from the busy streets. Daiun-in offers a quiet, almost hidden moment where visitors can feel the everyday spirituality of Kyoto. Its simple architecture and calm surroundings make it a peaceful pause along the walk through Gion.
Also known as the Daiun-in Gionkaku, this striking tower rises unexpectedly behind the temple. Topped with a heron, it reflects early 20th-century ambitions to create a modern landmark inspired by European observation towers. Its unusual presence offers a fascinating contrast between traditional Gion and Kyoto’s brief flirtation with modern experimentation.
A beautifully preserved stone path linking some of Higashiyama’s most historic temples. Named after Nene, the wife of Toyotomi Hideyoshi, this quiet walkway captures the refined atmosphere of old Kyoto. Walking here feels timeless, with traditional walls, gentle curves, and a calm rhythm far from the crowds.
One of Kyoto’s most iconic historic streets. Sloping gently through Higashiyama, Ninenzaka is lined with traditional wooden houses, small shops, and tea cafés. It captures the everyday beauty of old Kyoto, where architecture, daily life, and scenery blend into a perfectly preserved streetscape.
A five-story pagoda rising above the Higashiyama streets, and one of Kyoto’s most iconic landmarks. Surrounded by narrow lanes and traditional houses, Yasaka Pagoda creates a powerful, postcard-perfect view that defines the image of old Kyoto and its enduring Buddhist heritage.
A unique and deeply personal shrine known for cutting negative ties and strengthening positive ones. Visitors pass through a sacred stone to leave behind bad relationships, habits, or situations, then pray for a better path forward. It is one of Kyoto’s most emotional and memorable spiritual experiences.
A perfect place to pause and understand the world of geisha. Surrounded by traditional architecture and cultural venues, this spot allows us to explore the refined arts of Gion, from music and dance to etiquette and daily life. Even without entering, the atmosphere and visuals make it an ideal setting to explain how the kagai districts functioned and why they still matter today.
The most iconic street in Gion and the heart of its traditional atmosphere. Lined with ochaya tea houses and refined wooden façades, Hanamikoji embodies the elegance and mystery of the geisha world. Walking here offers a rare glimpse into one of Kyoto’s most exclusive and carefully preserved districts.

This tour was a highlight of our time in Kyoto! Michael was an amazing host - very friendly, knowledgeable and took great care of our group. We learned about the geisha district, Gion and Kyoto. He also gave us great restaurant recommendations for afterwards. Highly recommend!

Michael was so friendly and knowledgeable! The tour was loaded with beautiful sights and interesting facts. He even shared some wonderful recommendations for food and experiences in the area!
Michael was fantastic! We learned so much!
I truly cannot recommend this tour enough. I am so weary of generic walking tours, and Michael’s tour was NOT that. He is super brilliant and knows so much about Japanese and world history. The tour was super intimate and educational, he was able to answer all of our questions, shared so much information about the area and Japan in general, and even went overtime to show us some statues and shrines where locals go to pray and make wishes, taught us how to pray in both Buddhist and Shinto shrines, and helped us spot a few Geiko. It would be an excellent start to anyone’s visit to Kyoto, or a way to dig deeper once you’ve already been there for a while!
Enthusiastic and friendly guide with lots of good information to share. Later tour of 17:45, so very light crowds. Great tour!
Michael's passion for the history and culture of the area is as infectious as it is encyclopaedic. This is an intimate experience which Michael tweaks to his participants' interest, complete with local recommendations along the way. I can't imagine a better tour.
Michael offered one of the best tour experiences I’ve ever had! He’s incredibly knowledgeable about the history and culture of Kyoto. I really appreciated how the tour was kept small and intimate, and Michael was willing to answer any and all questions we had. I would highly recommend anyone to try out this tour if they’re even thinking about it!

Our tour with Michael was exceptional. We walked around Gion and he showed us some of the key places, as well as some lesser-known ones, whilst giving us lots of information about it all. He has a huge amount of knowledge and answered all our questions. He’s very friendly and welcoming to tourists, and also gave some food recommendations. We would absolutely book again for a different tour if we come back. We’ve written the same review on Airbnb, where we booked, as we think the tour was that good.
I have done this tour previously and I appreciated Michael’s fresh take and the introduction of new information. I learned and saw new things Kyoto gems.

Michael was as knowledgeable as he was entertaining. Smart, funny, full of information that made for an exciting evening. Great job Michael.
It was our first time in Japan, and our first tour in Kyoto was with Michael. Michael is a hostory buff and really finds the time to explain the rich history of the Geisha, Shinto Shrines and Buddhist temples along the way. He’s extremely friendly, easy to approach and ask questions and get insights which left me in awe. The tour is easy going, the path was easy to walk with a few uphill and downhill moments. Michael was very kind to us as he adjusted the pace of the tour as we were a group of 4, two of which were with elderly age 75 and up. This was much appreciated and I would highly recommend Michael and this tour if you want to learn about Kyoto, the Gion district and the rich history behind it. Would definitely recommend it and would do it again next time with friends and family. Keep it up Michael! Merci Beaucoup 💪🏻👏🏼

Wonderful experience despite on a rainy day. Michael is very knowledgeable and passionate about the subject and we learned a lot. Thank you Michael!
We had such a great time exploring Gion with our guide, Michael! What made this tour special was how much more we understood about Kyoto by the end of it. Michael shared fascinating history about Gion and geisha culture, including traditions and details we never would have known just walking through the area on our own. Along the way, he took us through beautiful historic streets, past temples, shrines, pagodas and impressive gates, while explaining the stories and significance behind what we were seeing. He also knew the perfect spots for photos and helped us capture some wonderful memories of our time in Kyoto. Michael was incredibly personable and easy to talk to, and we especially appreciated all of his local recommendations — from foods we should try to places worth visiting after the tour. There was a little bit of everything: history, culture, architecture, food, local insight and great conversation. This was one of those tours where you walk away feeling like you actually learned something about the city rather than simply sightseeing. We would absolutely recommend Michael to anyone visiting Kyoto, especially if you want to experience Gion with a deeper appreciation for its history and culture. Thank you, Michael, for such a memorable morning!

It was the best tour we took in 10 days visiting Japan. Perfect time of the day for a long walk and a great tour guide. He was very knowledgeable, kind and took great photos of or family.
Michael’s stories made the Gion district come alive. His walking tour had so many treasures. My only regret…I wish that we had more time!
Very well informed. A lot of that went into his tour, including, for us, scheduling the tour so that we were in exactly the right places for the right views at sunset. Was able to keep telling us something fresh and interesting about each block we passed it seemed. Had a great time.
Our tour guide was outstanding. He was incredibly knowledgeable about Japanese history and culture, took us to beautiful locations with amazing viewpoints, gave us plenty of time to take photos, and made the entire experience enjoyable.
