Our family loves doing "haunted" tours whenever we travel, and this was an excellent one. Ada was a fantastic guide - not only was she able to share very interesting stories and urban legends about some of the dark aspects of Kyoto's history, but she also explained how some of the old legends and beliefs continue to influence Kyoto today. I would recommend this tour to anyone who loves urban legends and anyone interested in learning about some of the less sanitized parts of Kyoto's history. Given the nature of the tour, some of the topics and stories touch on mature themes, but most teenagers should be good to go (consisten with the age recommendation in the activity's description). The tour also involves walking around Kyoto to different sites for a couple of hours, which was great for my family, but it could be an issue for those with mobility issues.

This tour is unique in kyoto. I lived in kyoto for one year and still didn't know many of this interesting stories. Guide is really profesional. Timing was perfect at night to increase the mystery atmosphere.

Our tour in Kyoto with Ada was amazing! She took us to the historic part of town and showed us part of Kyoto that we would never find by ourselves. The tour was very well planned, all of the stories shared by our guide were connected with each other creating an amazing and fascinating story of the city, that you will probably not find in the tour guides. She explained how the city was functioning between different social groups in the time the emperors lived in Kyoto and how modern Japan was shaped by this sometimes dark stories. We even managed to spot a Geisha returning home! All in all I very much recommend this tour if you like to learn about history and culture, but in an unusuall and unexpected ways.

I just completed the Kyoto Dark History Tour, and it was one of the most unique, spine-tingling experiences I've had while traveling in Japan. If you're tired of the usual routine tour and want something with real depth (and a touch of the macabre), this tour is an absolute must-do. Our guide was incredibly knowledgeable and a masterful storyteller, weaving together tales of restless ghosts haunting historic sites, the hidden struggles of geisha in the old pleasure quarters, and even the eerie "gateways to hell" scattered throughout Kyoto. The tour was delivered with respect, fascinating historical context, and just the right amount of atmospheric chills. I learned so much about the layers of Kyoto that most tourists never see.

Best tour I've had by far! Ada has lived in Japan for a long time and is so knowledgeable about Kyoto and Japan in general. The stories she told are not what you find by yourself online or in a normal tour. It was fascinating and really helped us feel the atmosphere and hidden history of the city! Perfect mix of history, superstition, religion, and I loved that it touches on taboo topics. Started and ended on time. She could answer any question and made sure regularly that we could hear well. I ended up giving a good tip, I truly recommend it, she deserves it!

Very interesting, different from the rest of those we have done in Japan. The guide has great knowledge about the history of Kyoto and more peculiar stories, difficult to reach if it is not with this tour. Since it is at night, better temperature and much more pleasant to walk.

100% recommended. The best tour I have taken in a long time! The guide has a lot of knowledge about Japanese culture and history, and knows how to convey it in a very pleasant and interesting way. What I liked most is that she doesn't just show you neighborhoods and temples, but explains the context and the history behind each place. A perfect tour to get to know Kyoto in a much deeper way and really understand what you are seeing.

The best tour we did in Japan. It was an incredible experience and very different from other private tours. Ada told us the dark side of Kyoto's history, little known but no less interesting as we walked through the alleys of the historic center at night, which gives an even more special touch to the horror stories and some surprise that the tour hides. 100% recommended.
