Magical experiance that should not be missed highly recommended exhibition. Lovely gardens very well organised
Highly recommend. Beautiful show. Unique and arresting. Could have watched more but just enough for a taste. Our Geiko and Maiko were beautiful And poised. Loved it!
A must do experience and opportunity to see a geisha . A moving performance which is a lifelong memory
This was delightful. A rare opportunity to sit, watch and marvel at the precision of the skill set for a Maiko. It is extremely well organised to tagging wet umbrellas for collection. Highly recommend.
Learned a ton abot the Maiko and Geiko! Enjoyed even seeing the theater. Was disappointed that the performance was so short and only one performer. Most of the exhibit info was pictures with plaques to read. Had to buy 4 postcards to get a picture of the geiko that performed for us, which I thought was 4 of her, but turned out to be 3 other random people I hadn't seen perform.
Very unusual, interesting style of geisha dancing. Smth to remember. Highly recommend this if you're curious about geishas.
Booked the experience for a weekday at 1:30 PM for 2 adults. Arrived a little early and could walk through their museum beforehand. The performance itself was about 10-20 minutes and was fairly interesting (one single geisha performing a dance). Overall, I wouldn't say the price/ticket fee was of value for what you actually received. Probably found more enjoyment of watching the full geisha show on their projector screen in the museum area.
This was an excellent experience. We arrived early and walked around the museum; we also watched a brief video that explained about the history of Gion, the dances by Maiko, and the history of the school. The dances of the Maiko were excellent and ample time given to the performances. It was a great beginning to start our stay in Kyoto with this museum and performance.
The performance was very good but very short. But you can after roam around the museum and watch excellent videos of other performances that complete the trip. The museum is very interesting.
The Kyomai dance performed by two Geikos was such an unique, intimate and very beautiful opportunity for us. We had the chance to see these graceful dances up close. It’s pure joy to watch these beautiful artists perform.
The Kyomai dance was graceful and mesmerising, and meeting the Maiko and Geiko felt truly special. The Gion Art Museum visit added great cultural experience too. Highly recommend if you're visiting Kyoto!
It was so beautiful the geisha show, I really recommend it, and we took pictures with them to , it was a really nice experience .
An interesting afternoon exploring the culture of geiko and maiko (as in geisha in other places). We enjoyed the dance demonstration if not fully understanding its roots. The museum covers all aspects of training (its intense) and how women come into the profession which is somewhat different to what most westeners think, as well as makeup, dress, shoes and lifestyle. (Despite tripadvisor insisting we choose a trip name we were independent visitors)
Exquisite dance performance by two maiko, one after the other. One used two fans in a beautiful magic array of moves, the other just the sleeves of her kimono. Both dances felt like they were telling stories, set to haunting [recorded] music of voice and other Japanese instruments. It was spellbinding. They moved their eyes at times to indicate they were as if looking at something in the story being told, but were at the same time carefully expressionless. The dances ended with each kneeling and bowing to the floor, and when they came out after the show, they showed no reaction to the applause. It is obviously a very restrained art and highly disciplined. The musem has an amazing Japanese garden to view from inside the building, a display of gorgeous printed kimonos and the seasonal floral decorations of their wigs, along with exhibits of their specialized sandals . There are detailed explanations in English available via QR code of every aspect of the maiko life. And a long film of dance and nterview with the leading geiko of this school of edance and training for the maikos. THere is also a long film of a large group dance performance. I felt afterwards I had had a deep immersion into their world.
Wonderful museum and videos explaining the fascinating Maiko and Geiko Culture. Dance performance was captivating. So glad we attended-well worth it.
Seeing the museum before the performance was ideal and provided the perfect background and details to understand the dance and all things Geisha. The dance was beautiful. We added the photo with Meiko which made it all the better.
Super short. Meh. Wasn’t what I expected it to be. The performance was very simple and a bit lacklustre.
Great getting a taste of the maiko/geisha experience. The performance was captivating. The museum was informative.
In June attended a geisha show, which lasted about ~20 minutes and featured two geisha performing a graceful dance. The dance itself was elegant and professional, providing an authentic glimpse into traditional Japanese culture. The photography was strictly prohibited during the show, unless you paid an extra fee for a photo session with the geisha after the performance. The museum includes a wide array of artifacts from geisha culture, such as ornate kimonos, intricate hairpins, makeup tools and traditional footwear. Next to the museum Japanese garden was very tidy.
A delightful peek into the traditional Geisha culture and art. Magical opulence and elegance delicately wrapped in simplicity. Meiko’s performance was great. Museum gives visitors an insight into Geisha culture, tradition and education.
The museum was a pretty compact space, with plenty of exhibits showing the various aspects of the Maiko/Geiko life. The Maiko and Geiko dances were stunning performances. I would recommend trying to get the additional ticket for the photos, I didn't get it and ended up regretting it. Definitely worth it.
This was a great experience on our first night in Kyoto. The museum is interesting, the grounds are beautiful, and the dance was fantastic. I would highly recommend it!
Two very brief dance performances. Very short and I think the museum could have added more things. Not worth the prize. Then they charged extra 2,000 yen for brief photos.
Such an authentic and beautiful experience. Highlight of our trip! Our 10 year old daughter enjoyed it as well. No photos of the dance allowed so we purchased a photo session with the maiko.
i really enjoyed touring the museum and the dance performance by the maiko. The museum display include kimono, footwear, obi, hair ornaments, musical intruments and many other items used by maiko and geisha. The panels explaining the objects in the museum were easily translated into English using the barcode photo app on the iPhone. The dance was the hilight for me. I love dance and the maiko are so graceful in their hand motions and movement. I would go again.
What a unique experience watching the Kyomai dance! The Gion art museum is pretty special too…an enriching experience.
On recommendation of our guide we booked the show in the afternoon for 4:30 pm show !it was the last show of the year ! It was a nice and must visit for Kyoto visitors! And if you have not seen the movie or read the book, Memoirs of a Geisha see it or read it !
It was the perfect duration of performance for us. About 20 min long and the geiko museum was very informative for who want to spend more time knowing about geiko and Maiko traditions. And each show accommodates about 40-50 people, so everyone can see the dancers from up close. Please be aware that you have to remove the shoes before entering the building. better if kids stay quiet.
Great experience! This was a highlight of our trip. It was so interesting to learn more about the hidden culture of the Geiko and Maiko in Gion, and we really enjoyed the performance. It was about 15 minutes. The kimono on display and the beautiful Japanese garden in the back were lovely. Not really suitable for young children. Visitors are expected to be quiet and respectful.
It was a wonderful experience. Before entering the performance there are a few Kimono’s on display. They were gorgeous, the detail in them is amazing. The dance performance by the Maiko and Geshia was beautiful and easy to follow the story they were telling. The kimonos they wore were gorgeous.
A wonderful show and incredible museum! This is a must for visiting Kyoto! The show was about 15-20 mins long and it was a great a beautiful show. The museum itself had a great deal of information fill with rich cultural history. For the price, this is one of the best things to do in Kyoto! You cannot take any pictures of the Maiko-san or Geiko-san but you can pay to do a photo-op at the end and take pictures with them, (2000 yen at time of my visit in Nov 2024). The entire show and walking around the museum took around an hour and a half. I highly recommend making this a part of your Kyoto trip!
Stunning insight into the life of the Geiko (the official term used in Kyoto. The dance was beautifully portrayed and the museum and gardens were very informative. The show is short but worth it. We had already done a Geiko tour of Kyoto so we did know the some of the history which made the dance even more rewarding to see live.
The elegance of the dance with the shamisen and singing accompaniment was possibly the most culturally Japanese event I have ever personally witnessed. It actually made me misty-eyed. I would highly recommend this activity. Includes admission to the museum.
It was a unique and beautiful experience of Japanese culture. It was a nice extra to also have entrance to the museum and the serene and lovely garden.
This is a traditional experience and something to enjoy and appreciate that a Geisha goes thorugh. The museum has a beautiful garden to view.
Kyomi dance was good but recommend you go early and explore the Art Museum first so you can read about some of the Geiko culture beforehand - also it’s probably cheaper to buy the tickets directly at the Gion Art Museum while you are walking through the area - lots of time slots available for dance performances during the day
It was a great introduction to the geisha world. Worth the money. It wasn’t super engaging for little kids after the dance, but they did have a nice garden for them to run around in
It was an inexpensive and fun way to get some interaction with the geisha world. The kids enjoyed it For the majority of the time, had a nice garden for them to walk around in
I had a great time! The writing about Maiko culture is excellent, so please take your time to read it carefully. Watching the Maiko’s dance afterward makes it even more special. The bar area attached to the shop, with seats facing the garden, is a peaceful and pleasant spot to enjoy drinks—definitely a must-go place!
Here, you will be able to learn about Kyoto's Maiko. There are exhibits showcasing their kimono, hair accessories, and makeup tools. For an additional fee, you can watch a Maiko dance performance. This is a special experience that you wouldn’t usually get to see on a typical trip to Kyoto. It's a wonderful museum that will make your trip to Kyoto even more memorable.
It was sooo amazing experience!! When you came to Kyoto, Its a waste not to go here. We could to see places and products that we can't normally visit. We took a photo with "Maiko" It was so wonderful experience. Museum staff was very kind, If you visit to Kyoto, should definitely go!
なかなか知ることが出来ない背景、過程に接する事ができます。お庭も素敵です。 You can gain insight into the background and processes that are usually difficult to learn about. The garden is also beautiful.
A visit to better understand the fascinating world of geisha. The art museum houses a collection of objects related to this profession, with detailed descriptions of each stage of the process: a really interesting path. The show consists of a short dance that offers a taste of what a complete show could be.
It was a spectacular dance with emotions right down to the fingertips. I like the fact that all the exhibits except Kyomai accept photographs I was pretty happy to get up close and personal with the performance of the capital dance.
interesting museum, seen beautiful dances and be able to see the authentic theater inside. Very interesting! Fascinating world.
It is short but enjoyable, in addition to watching the dance, you can visit the museum with several videos that explain you and see the theater in which they perform. A fantasy to experience
Inside the hall, you could learn about maiko, how to become a geisha, decoration, kimono, etc. Also, in Kyomai the audience seats were full and seven extra zabuton were added temporarily in front of the stage, so the Japanese had a couple of us and we could see the second performance in the front row of the Takeshi, and it seemed to lower the threshold that was high. It was a very good experience!
After learning so much about the Geiko and Maiko world during our visits, this short dance demonstration is very evocative of a part of their refined know-how. Not to be missed. Visiting the museum is part of the service.
Great opportunity to see geiko and maiko dances. Only downside: only 2 dances of 10-12 minutes in total. You have to pay 200 yen to get a kodak photo. It's a bit of a tourist factory. It's a shame. I will not put pictures because it is forbidden to take pictures during the dance. And we're cops.
