We had a fun time learning calligraphy! Our hosts were on time and so friendly and encouraging. Our whole family really enjoyed the experience and it was a welcome break from walking and August heat.

Really enjoyed learning how to write my name and my favourite word in the three Japanese alphabets. A great experience and some great keepsakes to bring home.
Amazing calligraphy class in Kyoto! The instructors were very patient and explained the directions so well. We learned so much about both technique and culture. A truly unique and memorable experience—highly recommend!
Had a great time with the family. The staff was full of energy and very helpful! My kids had a blast from start to finish. A must stop!
Was great learned the way they read it and write and she was very knowledgeable and kind and helpful with any questions i had
We have just had so much fun with Haruko and Kani being taught about Japanese calligraphy, its origins and its use. We were taught how to use the brushes snd a brush pen and learnt to write our names and chosen words. We each came away with cards, a fan and examples of our work. The most important thing though is that we had fun, we laughed and really enjoyed ourselves, they were kind, patient and so encouraging. I would highly recommend this experience.
This was a very fun activity that both I am and my 9-year old son loved. There were several items to decorate with calligraphy and many chances to practice. The team created unique spellings of our names in Japanese kanji characters and helped us make the brush strokes in the right direction and order. There were 3 or 4 people helping us and they were very patient and encouraging. We came away with lots of uniquely decorated items and presents. To top it off, we were there at the right time but on the wrong day and the team accommodated us anyway. Highly recommend!
Highly recommended fun activity for young and old. The staff was very engaging and helpful. Very conversant in English.
Very pleasant and fun activity. We enjoyed every single minute. We are a family of 5 (2 parents + 8yo / 15 yo / 17 yo ) and all of us had a great time learning and writing some words in Japanese.
Such a fun experience. Lana and Waka were so informative and patient. We learned so much history and art. Definitely would recommend.
It was our last day in Japan at it was only two blocks away from where we were staying near the train station very nice and welcoming. Learned about different kinds of calligraphy used in Japan. To find it you need to look for the MK taxi stand.
Very entertaining and pleasant experience. Follow the meeting instructions carefully, the location is a little hidden. Staff were friendly and attentive and the calligraphy lessons were exactly as advertised. Excellent time was had by all.
The class was an hour. Our family of four attended the class. We each had an instructor who spoke English that taught us how to write our names in the 3 character styles. All four instructors are were very personable. We took home our “practice sheets” and other items we wrote what we were taught. Fun family time!
It was a bit difficult to find (look for the MK building diagonally across the street when you come out of the station exit) but well worth it, everyone was so nice and we got some great souvenirs to bring home. My daughters loved it.
Haruko was great and friendly. Very kind and patient as she explained. I truly enjoyed it. I am very happy I did this activity. I want to learn more calligraphy.
Fantastic experience, excellent teachers, great value for the money. Easy to find, across from west exit of Kyoto station.
The staff were so lovely and encouraging! Lots of practice runs before making a fan. Also got to use super cute stamps. I definitely recommend!
Lovely experience for anyone. Very patient and kind tutor. Highly recommend to any person. Fun activity. Easy location to find.
Such a wonderful experience, the sensei is so friendly, kind and patient. A great variety, not rushed and have some lovely things to take away with me . I'm delighted!
The team is amazing and the experience is one of a kind. Definitely you need to try. You have very nice take aways back home!
Very entertaining and enjoyable extremely informative and expressive very well, the teacher was very helpful and encouraging I thoroughly enjoyed the experience
I got an hour of one on one coaching in Shodo. Sensei-San had me work on a number of words including the Kanji version of my name and also my favorite word. At the end you get to walk away with your own artwork fitted into a frame for a souvenir. Highly recommend it for those studying Japanese but fun for anyone really.
Waka and Rena were amazing tour guides! We had so much fun, learned a lot and had a great experience. The shopping and treats were amazing. Arigato!
We decided to book this class as the reviews were very positives on this same website. It was easy to find the please even though the Kyoto station is so big and we were coming from the other side . Haruko welcomed us with such an amazing energy. There was just my husband and I for this class so we were very lucky. They gave us the samples of our written names ( and meaning ) in the 3 types of characters ( Kanji, Harigana & Katakana) and during the class they guided us on how to reproduce them with a wide blush first , then a smaller one and finally with a special pen. They gave us all the materials that we worked on as a souvenirs as well as photo frame and a hand-fan. Haruko and Mizue have been so kind and so friendly it was a real great moment and we had a lot of fun I would highly recommend to do this workshop!!!!
This was truly an incredible experience. The service exceeded all expectations. It was my husband’s first time trying calligraphy, and he had never written anything in Japanese before, as he is a non-Japanese English speaker. The class took place in the office of a taxi company, and although it was just the two of us, we were supported by a calligraphy instructor, her assistant, and a personal translator who worked directly with my husband. The translator sat beside him, guiding him through each character, teaching him how to write each stroke step by step. At the end of the class, we were each given six beautiful sheets of calligraphy, carefully rolled and protected with newspaper and placed in a clear file. We also received a photo frame with a picture of us, printed on the spot. It was an unforgettable experience and honestly one of the best value for money activity I’ve ever done off of TripAdvisor
had an incredible time at this Japanese calligraphy class! The instructors were knowledgeable, patient, and passionate about the art, making it easy to follow along even as a beginner. It was super fun and I left with a newfound appreciation for this beautiful craft. Highly recommend it to anyone looking for a unique and cultural activity in Kyoto! Also what you get to leave with make really great souvenirs!
The staff were very helpful and chatty, and guided us through creating a set of souvenirs for ourselves with our names and favourite words in Kanji, Hiragana, and Katakana characters.
The class had a nice pace! They had our ink and brushes all ready when we arrived. We got to learn how to write our name in the three different types of Japanese characters. Then we also got to choose how to write a favorite word! Also I got to write a “congratulations” card for my daughter’s upcoming college graduation. The teachers were very encouraging and told us exactly the proper way to brush each stroke. It was really cool!!
We took the 5000 yen course and got our moneys worth. You do a lot of different things like post cards, fans, a few words and a framed card. The people were very nice and patient! Wonderful experience.
This was a really great experience, the ladies were absolutely fantastic. We got to practice for a while first and then painted directly onto a fan. We then painted on a piece of card which was framed. Finally we wrote our names onto a typical gift envelope. 5000 yen in total which I think was fantastic value. The session lasted a total of two hours. Really enjoyed this activity.
Waka was amazing! They went out of their way to give an excellent calligraphy lesson and were very supportive and patient. If you are in Kyoto I strongly recommend booking in for a lesson with them.
Wonderful experience for myself and my 6 year daughter. Loved the writing but more important the teachers were so nice and loving towards my daughter. Highly recommend.
Very much enjoyed the calligraphy class - we got to write our names and our favorite word in Japanese Kanji. The class came with a photo frame of us and the custom fans we made with our calligraphy. Highly recommend - fun and friendly staff.
This experience was absolutely amazing. The team here is extremely attentive, encouraging, and knowledgeable. We learned so much and made a ton of memories and souveniers in a short time. 100% recommend.
We had a great time with our calligraphy teachers who were very helpful and encouraging, thanks for all the cheering and clapping! Great that we learnt how to make some fantastic Japanese calligraphy art to take home to remember our time in Japan.
Yoshimura and May were our fabulous tour guides. Both ladies shared lots of interesting facts about the Gion Festival and traditions of Japan. They also kindly took the time to chase up our ticket confirmation for the Gion Festival the following day. Thank you so much we had a fabulous time!
We had an unforgettable experience because of Shozo Saka, who guided us two days through Kyoto and the areas close by. Shozo picked us already up at the train station and understood from the first minute our deep interest in the history of Kyoto. He made always the best suggestions and showed us very unique places and trails. He made our wishes came true and because of his excellent English we learned so much in a very unique and spacial way. Besides the memories we have, Shozo prepared us with little brochures and saved our tickets from the entrances we bought as well as he took perfect pictures of us. Even after two weeks already at home we still can't believe how precious we are to make those memories. Thank you Shozo. See you next time :)
We used their services twice for long trips in Kyoto, they have excellent service, on time, very helpful and friendly. First driver - unfortunately I don’t remember his name - came on time, took us for a long road trip. He knew shortcuts which google maps did show which saved us almost 25~30 minutes and we avoided traffic. Second driver - Shozo Saka - he was very helpful as well, on my second trip it was photography trip, he helped me watching my son during my photo shoot in multiple locations. Without his assistance, I wouldn’t get the photos that I wanted. The trip was 9:30hrs long Thank you MK taxi for the great service and thank you for choosing the right people for the right job.
Everyone who plans on getting a private car to drive around Kyoto, you must ask for Mr. Shozo Saka! He was an amazing driver and guide, helping us all the way from getting the right lunch place to guiding us through the beautiful temples of Nara. He spoke perfect english and knew everything about the history of Japan overall and deep insights into Kyoto, Nara etc. Thank you Shozo Saka!!
The whole team was very caring for us. We were able to write in different ways our first names and another word. Then on a souvenir fan. A bit fast, but very nice with children.
