Had a fantastic time with Yuta - so much so this was my second time doing this tour with him! It was action packed, and customised based on our preferences. A lot of hidden places where there were no tourists, which is so special. Yuta is full of knowledgeable facts.

Itinerary
The experience begins with a ride through a historic district, before we reach a tranquil shrine setting, which we explore on foot. From there, we cycle through charming neighborhoods and peaceful wooded areas, gradually making our way to a serene Zen location—a hidden gem far from the usual tourist spots. Along the way, we stop for a delicious traditional snack at a family-run shop with a history that stretches back over a thousand years. Later, we ride through a quiet temple complex to visit one of my favourite rock gardens in the area. Afterwards, we take our time riding through calm backstreets as we make our way back to the starting point. The tour covers approximately 14 km and lasts around 3 hours and 45 minutes. It’s designed to be a perfect balance of riding and walking, offering a truly unique journey through parts of the city rarely seen by visitors.

Myself and 2 friends did Koru's Hidden Kyoto eBiking Tour at the beginning of October. It was a great introduction to Kyoto as well as to Japan. Henry was an outstanding guide ensuring that everyone in our small group were comfortable with the pace and the bikes. Very thankful for our highly quality ebikes which were easy to operate especially when we encountered the hilly section of our ride. Henry was an excellent storyteller sharing stories and history to the less-touristed places we visited. We will definitely sign up for another Koru bike tour on my next visit to Kyoto.
This is such a cool tour. You get to see the real side of temple and shrine life by visiting real places that don't cater to tourists. Our guide, Yuta, was amazing and shared many important tips about how to visit Japan while making the best impression. This tour also takes you through a mountain village and forested area above the city. It's so beautiful and off the beaten path. I've done this tour twice now, the second time with a group of friends who were visiting Kyoto and it was great. The bikes are super easy to ride, but you should know how to ride a bike before this tour.
My partner and another couple did the Hidden Kyoto Tour with Sean and really loved it. Such a great way to see parts of the city that most tourists won’t see. It was so enjoyable after battling the crowds at some of the “hot spots” that everyone wants to see while in Kyoto. Sean is a wonderful guide - we learned so much with him about the history, culture and customs of this country. He is warm and friendly and a wealth of knowledge. I would highly recommend recommend this tour.
Good experience cycling around Kyoto on e-bikes and visiting beautiful secluded temples and gardens. It was a good adventure
Amazing experience, everything was perfect. Yatu was the best guide, lots of information and the sights we visited were beautiful. We visited a shrine, temple, enjoyed a tea ceremony. Overall a highlight of our trip to Japan. P.S Thank you Yatu for the hike recommendation, loved the scenery, the swim and even the scary tunnel!
This was one of our best experiences in our two week Japan visit. While not really hidden, the shrines and places we visited had very few tourists, unexpectedly because the shrines were among the best we visite in our trip. Our guide, Henry, was very thorough in his explanations, and, as he is somewhat of a history buff, his comments greatly helped us understand not only the historic significance of the places we visited, but of Japan in general. Definitely a must, I just hope it stays "hidden" so others can enjoy it the same way.
Great experience. Our guide Yuta showed us the hidden gems of Kyoto. He is very knowledgable about Kyoto and Japan, he is fluent in English and has a great sense of humor. We really enjoyed the tour.
This small biking tour was a great way to see and enjoy the city without all of the crowds. It was not close to a train station which is why many of the sites we went to were not filled with tourists. I really enjoyed visiting the temple of students and academic success and the eating mochi from a 25th generation family. The bikes were top notch and it allowed us to cover more ground. I don't think we cycled for more than 4-5 miles but parts were hilly. Our guide, Henry, was incredible. He knew so much history and culture after being there for more than a decade. He was also a great story teller when describing some of the historical significance. I loved that he would tailor the conversation to our interests whether it be the show Shogun, real estate, the geisha/maiko education, or the political climate. I was really impressed with his knowledge.
Henry our guide was excellent, with superb local knowledge and Japanese history. With the crowds of tourist in Kyoto, it was so nice to escape them on this tour and enjoy the tranquil places we visited with hardly any other people around. Would highly recommend!
This bike tour was so fun and informative! Our whole group agreed it was a highlight of our two week trip. This is definitely a unique tour of Kyoto that you won't be able to see any other way.
We had a brilliant time visiting wonderful sites without the teeming hordes experienced in other parts of Kyoto. 10/10 recommend.
Michael was an engaging and thoughtful guide! As a fellow history nerd I loved his storytelling about Buddhism and Shintoism. The biking itself was easy and safe and the spots we visited were very memorable. Still can’t believe we had tea and Aburimochi from a shop opened in the year 1000! And thank you for the email detailing all we did, it makes the tour that much easier not having to remember everything in real time.
The best way to experience Kyoto! Yuta was our guide and he brought such depth and fun to the experience. We saw hidden places only a local would know and learned about Japanese culture. It was truly an amazing experience. Thank you, Yuta!
Truly hidden gems and parts of Kyoto I probably would not have found myself, including beautiful shrines and temples off the beaten path. Our guide Yuta was very attentive, especially with the steeper parts of the ride. Lots of fun.
Excellent experience!! Henry is an amazing guide and is very knowledgeable. You can ask him absolutely anything about the places you’re visiting on the tour. 10 out of 10 Stars!
The Hidden Gems of Kyoto tour lived up to its name, we visited several really interesting locations which were well off the beaten path. Sean our guide was superb, he is a native English and Japanese speaker so was perfectly suited to our group of westerners. His cultural knowledge and familiarity with the back roads and secret routes meant we covered a lot of ground but still had time for stops and stories. Plus a great snack in the middle of the trip. On Sean’s recommendation we also visited a Gyoza diner for dinner, Chou Chou Gyoza which was fantastic.
I traveled in Japan for 21 days and I must say that this ebike tour with Henry is the top of my experiences. This tour was on my third day in the country. I learned a lot about Japan and Kyoto. Traveling through the back streets, mountains, communities, and stopping at out of the way spots was absolutely delightful.
The best tour! I did this exact same tour two years ago - came back to visit japan with my mom and knew I had to take her on this tour. Highlight of our trip! I've also sent three friends on this tour when they traveled and they all had the best time!
This is my second time booking this tour. It was as amazing as the first time. Completely different locations and information, which makes each experience unique. Sean was an incredible tour guide with tons of knowledge. If you ever plan a trip to Japan, book this tour as the best way to see Kyoto.
Henry was so knowledge and gave us the best hidden Kyoto experience. We learned things we would never have learned if we didn't take this tour. Highly recommend this tour.
Did both tours on offer: Michael and Henry were amazing guides, definitely one of the best things I've done in Japan and best in Kyoto. Highly recommended.
Our guide Sean was super knowledgeable about all the areas we visited including the culture and history. He did a very good job tailoring the tour route to the individuals in the group and was very accomodating. The ride was beautiful, the bikes were very nice and overall my son (17 y/o) really enjoyed our day.
Sean is a wonderful and knowledgeable guide - His delivery was lively and engaging. HIs pace was just right, allowing us to take in the history and the beauty without having to rush through the various sites he had planned. He was also helpful and accommodating to group cyclists with various skills (my wife). Cycling always offers more in terms of distance covered, but also allows us to see much more of Kyoto's real life. Top notch tour, recommended 100%.
First of all, Yuta is awesome! Second, everything we did on the tour was great. He made it a point to ensure we saw and experienced things off the beaten path. The way he tells stories is very captivating and made us want to learn more. Overall, 10 out of 10 experience.
Fascinating tour through some of Kyotos most beautiful sights. E-bikes are a wonderful way to explore the city. Thanks Michael for an informative and engaging tour.
Good information and great fun!! Henry was excellent and made the tour interesting and engaging. Would definitely do it again and totally recommend!! 10/10 ⭐️
Our guide was Yuta. Hes very knowledgeable and my daughter and I learned a lot. He made sure everyone was okay the entire time. He took us to places that were not touristy. Had some wonderful mochi and tea. Highly recommend Yuta.
This experience was fantastic. Our guide Michael was able to teach us so much in our time together. I feel like I know Kyoto and its people and culture so much more intimately than I did when I arrived here a few days ago. We had the opportunity to see, touch and taste things we probably would not have found on our own in our limited time in the city. We loved it!
An awesome morning spent seeing parts of Kyoto would never have found. Our guide Michael left me with a much greater appreciation of Kyoto and a degree of enlightenment. ;)
Sean took us to special places that not everyone goes to. He also was very informative and told us great stories about where we were and what we were seeing
I had a really good time! Yuta was a great guide. My tour was on a public holiday and Yuta showed us some temples and areas that were out of the way. It was a great escape from the crowds. The biking wasn't bad, we stayed to the side streets, it was weird biking on the wrong side of the street though! I would recommend it!
My wife and I went on the Secret Kyoto tour and had a fantastic time. We'd spent a couple of days in Kyoto already and seen a few of the more popular tourist spots, so seeing a different part of Kyoto with new temples and shrines while moving around with ease on Panasonic E-bikes was a treat. The tour was made unforgettable by our guide, Henry. Henry was incredibly caring and supportive of everyone in the group. He was absolutely brimming with information about the tour, as well as every question from architecture to politics our group threw his way, and is gifted to inform in a way that is easily digestible as well as funny. Thanks so much, Henry! Best guide we've had yet. Taylor & Taylor
Brilliant tour with our superb guide, Sean. It was the highlight of our trip to Kyoto. As promised, we visited some of the less busy but still very impressive sites of the city and Sean provided just the right level of information. The e-bikes added a fun dimension to it as well.
Sean was an amazing guide with a high level of Japanese history knowledge. Would thoroughly recommend this bike tour for anyone visiting Kyoto.
Went on this e-bike tour with my family, Henry was our guide and we had a BLAST!! So fun and I feel like we learned so much. You get to see true “off the beaten path” areas of Kyoto.
Thoroughly enjoyed all the aspects of this tour! The bike route was very interesting going through back roads of the city as well as gorgeous cedar forests! The various temple visits were both beautiful as well as informative. We enjoyed authentic matcha tea in a tea house overlooking a beautifully curated Japanese zen garden. Our guide was both educational and hilarious. Highly recommend for an adventure that is time and money well spent.
This was one of the highlights of our trip. The guide and sites were fantastic, but honestly, it's the guide who made this such a great experience. Yuta communicated very well, and not only took us to some amazing places, but also educated us and fed us along the way! Two highlights were the Zen Buddhist Temple, where he taught us about Zen Buddhism and proper respect for the temple, and the 1000-year-old Tea House, where we got tea and a sticky rice treat (I don't recall the name, but it was delicious!). The entire experience is something we'll take with us forever!
Yuta was an outstanding guide - very knowledgeable about the historical sites and full of great stories to go with each one. Easily one of the best things we did in Japan!
Despite the rain, shaun made it a great trip. He was very knowledgable and patient with all our questions. Highly recommend this tour
Our family of 3 all absolutely loved this e bike tour. As e bike novices we found them easy to use. Yuta, our guide was fantastic and the trip was geared around the real hidden areas. We learnt so much about the history of the area and people it was so interesting. Instead of the really busy temple we headed to the 1000 year family sweet stop for an unexpected extra treat. The whole trip was just perfect
This bike tour was phenomenal. Yuta was a fantastic guide, very knowledgeable, caring in making sure everyone felt comfortable and safe, and funny. He managed the time well and even took great photos from the best angles for everyone. I highly recommend this tour and’s thank Yuta for a wonderful experience seeing some hidden aspects of Kyoto!
Yuta was outstanding-the history and cultural information he shared with us was so interesting. We saw amazing sights with no crowds. I did not want the tour to end!
I did the Secret Kyoto Tour with guide Sean and cannot recommend this more. Super fun tour and really knowledgeable and passionate guide. He touched on everything from Buddhism to Shintoism and general Japanese history. Probably my favourite experience yet in Japan!
Amazing experience. Best way to experience Kyoto and understand the history and culture.
Henry was a fantastic guide. Very knowledgeable and full of great facts about Japanese history. Enjoyed the biking.
Excellent tour!!! Nearly no other tourists around. Real jems and just the right mix of history, culture, nature. Our tourguide Yuta was exceptionally well prepared and gave as a highly informative 360 degree experience of Kyoto and far beyond with such dedication - an imemorable experience. Also very well organized tour in terms of bikes, admissions, drinks and it had just the right length. We wanted to book the next tour with Yuta right away….. thank you soooooo much!!
Excellent. Henry was a really good guide. Took us on a very interesting tour and gave us much appreciated history. He understand the Japanese culture well and can explain it as a westerner. 5 stars!
The tour took us to many interesting “hidden gems”. Our guide, Yuta was amazing. He not only spoke English very well, he gave us lots of interesting stories about everywhere we went and we learned a lot. One of the best bike tours we have ever done and we’ve done about 20! Highly recommend!
Thank you so much Yuta, for the e-bike tour. My girlfriend and I were completely impressed. You were far more than a guide, your knowledge of Japanese culture ran deep, and you took us through quieter, non touristy neighborhoods, temples, and some genuinely beautiful scenery. It was the highlight of our time in Kyoto and that’s all down to you. If you enjoy nature, culture, and finding hidden gems, I can’t recommend this tour enough.
