Fushimi Inari Shrine is the most visited Shinto shrine in kyoto. With its thousands of Torii gates, attracts thousands of from around the world
When the sun sets over Kyoto, Miyagawa-cho transforms into a magical realm of glowing lanterns, timeless beauty, and cultural intrigue. Located just south of Gion and running parallel to the Kamogawa River, this historical geisha district is a must visit, especially at night. Let's discover it together pedaling through its lantern-lit streets, which is the perfect way to experience the timeless charm and culture of Kyoto in a unique and unforgettable way. If we are lucky, we may spot a geisha or maiko in their elegant kimono as they make their way to the evening appointments. It could be the highlight of our tour.
Gion at night offers a unique and unforgettable experience, where the charm of Japan's traditional culture comes alive under the stars. The iconic Hanamikoji street, lined with historic tea houses (ochaya), is particularly stunning at night. We'll ride through Gion's most traditional zones.
After a pleasant ride through Maiko and Geisha alleyways, we visit one of Kyoto's most unusual and fascinating Shinto shrines, where visitors come seeking to cut ties with bad relationships or habits and form stronger and more positive ones. At the heart of the shrine there is a large sacred stone with a hole in the center. The ritual involves writing your wishes on a piece of paper and crawling through the hole to symbolize breaking away from the past and welcoming new ties.
The area surrounding Hokan-ji, better known as Yasaka Pagoda, is one of Kyoto's most photographed locations. The pagoda sits amidst narrow cobblestoned streets lined with traditional Machiya townhouses. At dusk, the streets are illuminated by lanterns, creating a magical atmosphere. No doubt, we'll be busy catching the best sceneries with our cameras.
Our next area of interest is the best night scenery, and spot for photos. Considered by many as the most traditional area of Japan, Ninenzaka is one of the two slopes that offer tourists an amazing view, specially at night, of what Japan used to be in the past.
It’s the most famous park in Higashiyama, with cherry trees, ponds and wooden bridges.

An excellent way to see Kyoto lit up at night, learn its history, and avoid the daytime tourist traffic!
We had Hotaru for our guide for this tour. She was very insightful and spoke English very well. She was easy to understand as well as informative, and took many pictures for us. We enjoyed biking through the tour, and especially enjoyed Fushimi Inari Taisha (shrine with all the tori gates). She pointed out little details while we were there which made it engaging and interesting. We also enjoyed listening to the meanings behind various names/terms (especially since we don't know Japanese), and the history or stories behind various aspects of the sites we visited. Despite the tour saying it would not be an E-bike tour, we were lucky enough to be able to use them which made the hills around Gion so much more easier to bike up (there's a few - maybe 3 or 4, less than 30 seconds - steep uphill climbs). I wouldn't anticipate the use of them, but since my husband and I were the only ones to sign up for the tour when we went, I'm guessing they were able to spare them. Without an E-bike, the climb is still manageable, but I'd say you'd need to be at least moderate fitness level for that part; everything else was relatively easy (if you can ride a bike for at least 30 minutes, you can do most of the tour without any issues). The most challenging part of the bike ride were the crowds in narrow streets of Gion (which is beyond their control). But if you enjoy riding bikes and want to see a good amount of the East side of Kyoto in a short amount of time, I would recommend this tour. If you're hesitant about any hills, I'd reserve and then message them to see if it's possible to get an E-bike. There were frequent enough breaks for pictures and water, and a couple of bathroom break opportunities as well during out tour. It was most 5-10 minutes of biking, then a brief break to discuss something, before biking again for another 5-10 minutes. The longest bike spurt was the ride back, which was either flat or downhill. Pacing did not feel rushed, and we ended on time. We had plenty of opportunities to ask questions and Hotaru was able to answer anything we asked. I would love to do it again with my other family members some day.
This bicycle tour was really fun and a unique, insightful adventure through Kyoto that I would recommend to anyone looking for a unique lens to see Kyoto through. Our guide was Haruto and she was really awesome. Warm, friendly and funny. She had a lot of information about the landmarks we visited. She guided us through fun customs at the Fushimi Inari Shrine, made sure everyone was safe and comfortable with their bikes and took a lot of photos and videos for us. The highlight of the adventure was riding through the Geisha district in Gion, a surreal and beautiful experience with imagery we'll probably remember for life. The ride can be challenging as you will navigate through active pedestrian and car traffic, narrow paths, but Haruto always adjusted her pace and guided us through difficult obstacles. If you are debating whether this is worth the money, it absolutely is.
Thank you Jaime for a wonderful night exploring the sights of Kyoto. We learnt so much about Japanese culture, more than any other tour. The bikes were great to ride, comfortable seats and easy to handle. We were amazed at how quiet the roads were. This is an unmissable experience. We will be recommending to family and friends.
Exploring Kyoto at night with such a knowledgeable tour guide while riding a bicycle was the kind of experience I didn't know I needed. I would do this again 100% if had the opportunity. Jaime has been living for over 2 decades so he knows all the details and stories you are not gonna find with another tour guide. Recommended 100%
I had a wonderful night bike tour in Kyoto with the guide, Jaime. He was very friendly, knowledgeable, and shared interesting stories about the city. Riding through the quiet, lantern-lit streets and hidden spots that I would never have discovered alone. It was so peaceful and beautiful. The pace was comfortable, I felt safe and well taken care of the whole time. Highly recommended for anyone who wants to see a different and special side of Kyoto! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Super exciting bike trip through Kyoto at the late evening. Thank you Jamie. My wife Anna thought that it is scary to pedal on the streets. You showed that it was very easy to pedl in Kyoto for ex. in Gion alleys and with your knowledge it was an adventure to Kyoto history. We were both so glad after the trip. We hope you are ok. Best greetings for you. We highly recommend Jamies services to all.
Amazing to see Kyoto when at night, especially Gion area. We were able to cover lots of distances with a bike. Jaimie was very informative.
Jaime was an amazing guide, very knowledgeable, friendly with the locals, and spoke a lot of languages which was cool to hear. We learned a lot about the city and we were able to see a lot of what Kyoto had to offer in a short span of time. The night time vibes really help for the flow of getting around and exploring the city in a fun unique way. The bikes were fun and intuitive, we had lights which helped for traffic as well. Highly recommend, you'll have an amazing time!
Incredible experience! He was knowledgeable about every destination and even taught us quite a bit of Japanese. At the end he showed us to his favorite restaurant. The whole experience was worth every penny!
It was the best was to see and experience Kyoto on bike. No crowds, it’s like we had it all to ourselves. Jamie was a great tour guide. I would do this again in a heartbeat.
The Kyoto-by-night Biketour will definitely be one of my highlights of the stay. 🤩 The guide Jamie is a very kind and fun person and it made the experience even more enjoyable. You get to see beautiful places in Kyoto without all the crowds and get a lot of interesting information about the japanese culture. I recommend this Tour wholeheartedly ❤️
My husband and I are so glad we booked this tour last minute and that Jaime could accomodate us. It is a highlight of our trip in Japan so far. After having very sore feet from 2 previous walking tours it was such a nice change to explore the city by bike and be able to cover several beautiful sites without the crowds during the day. Jaime is a very knowledgeable and passionate guide, we learnt a lot from him during our tour which we really appreciated. We also liked his directions when following him on the bike and ensuring our safety. Thank you Jaime for your kindness and an enjoyable evening.
Jaime did an amazing job guiding us around the city and know the streets and alleys well. Recommend for a great experience in Kyoto
Jaime was such a great tour guide. He gave us so much interesting information about each place we stopped and kept it fun! This tour was an excellent way to see many popular sites without the crowds. We saw a few Geisha going to their appointments and even spotted wild boar at the Fushimi Inari Shrine. Jaime is a true ambassador of Kyoto and the evening was magical.
An amazing way to see the sights of Kyoto. Jamie was a knowledgeable and entertaining guide, a well paced tour that enables you to see Kyoto at a magical time of the evening.
Tour guide spoke way too much. Only 1hr 45 min ride, rest standing and talking. Places we went were nice but guide talked so much, i was uninterested and would have left if i could. The tour went 45 mins over finish tome due to the talking :( on a bike tour i expected more riding than talking. Tour guide loved to talk alot about things not relevant to tour.
Booked this tour for my husband and son. They LOVED it! Jaime, was an amazing tour guide. Turned out nobody else was on the tour that night, felt very private and Jamie provided so much history and culture. The Kyoto streets and tourist areas were less crowded, they easily navigated through many areas and saw a lot of attractions. During the day, the weather was hot and humid, and the bike tour at night was cool with spotty rain showers. My boys had an amazing experience. Def a must do activity while in Kyoto.
On 17 august I and my family spent our afternoon with Jamie in a bike tour. it’s a amazing experience, Jamie is very nice person and the tour is very beutiful, the route, the seem and the atmosfere. if you like bike I suggest you bike tour of Kyoto with Jamie. Antonella
This bike tour of Kyoto at night was absolutely magical. Jaime was a fantastic guide - engaging, funny and knowledgable - and the places he took us were varied and really interesting. This tour was a highlight of our trip to Japan - for all four of us - and I’d totally recommend it to anyone wanting to see this beautiful city without crowds or in the heat of the day.
What a fantastic tour! I have been living in Kyoto for many months now & still got so much out of this tour! We went through beautiful neighbourhoods with a lot of Edo period architecture. I saw areas I had not explored. It is such a different beautiful experience seeing Kyoto at night. It's also a plus there are not many tourists out at night so it feels like you have the whole city to yourself. Jaime is such a knowledgeable & engaging tour guide.
Great way to experience Kyoto with less people, lower temperatures, off the ordinary track and experience as the city changes as the sun set. Highly recommended
This tour was a fantastic way to orient our family to Kyoto and enjoy some incredible sites by e-bike. Jaime is a knowledgeable and personable host, with an understanding of Japanese culture and the norms of Kyoto. On this 3.5hr tour our group visited temples, various other sites where we got to see Maiko (training Geisha) and Geisha as well as experience the sights conformably on a well powered e-bike. I would definitely recommend this for families, couples, or even individual travellers. You will learn more in a few hours than you might exploring yourself and then if you have time can return to the sites later.
We highly recommend a night tour of Kyoto with Jaime! As someone who has lived in Kyoto for over 20 years and dedicated to studying its history, Jaime was a fountain of information. His enthusiasm made the tour fun and memorable. He has been a world traveler and is fluent in English, Spanish, Japanese, and possibly other languages. Having the personal connection with Jaime and his assistant, Akari, made riding the back streets and exploring temples at night a unique and one of our most memorable experiences of our trip. Thank you Jaime and Akari!
A fantastic experience! Jaimie is very passionate and knowledgeable about Kyoto and Japan. The tour was a great way to see and experience parts of Kyoto that you wouldn't see on your own, without the large crowds. It was our first time on e-bikes and we loved it! Jaimie provided a fun, relaxed and informative tour... I would recommend this to every Kyoto visitor!
This was an awesome way to see Kyoto. Jaime was a fantastic guide, we got to see parts of the city we never would have found on our own, and learnt so many great things about Kyoto. Highly recommend!
I had a fantastic experience. Our guide Jaime was incredibly knowledgeable and shared so many interesting facts about the places we visited. What made the tour even better was the guide’s bright and cheerful personality—it really lifted the whole group’s mood. The route was well-planned, safe, and full of beautiful sights. I learned a lot and had so much fun at the same time. I would definitely recommend this tour to anyone looking for a mix of exercise, learning, and enjoyment. It was a memorable way to explore Kyoto !
Jamie is a wonderful guide and the sights are beautiful. I especially enjoyed the Fushimi Inari stop because it was not as crowded as during the day, and my partner loved all the history facts we learned from Jamie. We had a great time exploring the city at night :)
My daughter and I absolutely loved this. This is definitely the best way to see Kyoto. Jaime was funny and very knowledgeable we learnt a lot. I would 100% recommend doing the night bike tour. If you are worried about how hard it is don’t worry because you get to ride e bikes
I loved this tour and had a fantastic time exploring Kyoto by night with Jaime. His knowledge about the city and Japan was impressive and he made an extra special effort to ensure I had an enjoyable experience. I got on with Jaime so well that we even went out for dinner together the next night! I would highly recommend the tour to anyone interesting in seeing the most important sights in Kyoto and getting a flavour for the city and what else there is to explore in your own time.
I highly recommend seeing Kyoto at night by bike. Juan was an excellent guide. He ensured I felt safe on the bike. Riding along the river, seeing the temples and shrines lit up were beautiful. I ended up being the only person on the tour. Thank you for not canceling as it was one of the highlights of my trip.
I joined the Discover Kyoto at Night by Bike tour. Although I was born in Japan and lived in Osaka until high school, I have lived abroad for many years, so this was actually my first time experiencing Kyoto as a tourist. I heard that the guide, Jaime, is excellent, so I decided to join this tour — and he truly exceeded my expectations. His knowledge and sense of humor were wonderful, and it felt like riding around nighttime Kyoto with a good friend. Visiting shrines and illuminated spots at night was an unforgettable experience. The atmosphere was completely different from the Kyoto you see in daytime photos — there’s a special feeling in the air that can’t be captured in pictures. Also, there were far fewer people at night, making it easier to take photos. It was also my first time riding an e-bike, and it was extremely comfortable, allowing me to enjoy the entire tour without any fatigue. Jaime’s Japanese was incredibly impressive — he spoke and understood Japanese at a near-native level. His explanations of the history and background of the places we visited were deep and detailed, and I learned so much. I have truly never encountered a guide who is as dedicated and passionate about their work as he is. I wholeheartedly recommend this tour to anyone. In fact, I am already planning to invite my friends and join this tour again next time.
This tour was fantastic. Jaime had deep knowledge of the sites we visited, and made every stop enjoyable. The route through Kyoto showed off some of the biggest and best sites the city has to offer, and I was impressed by the number of different city districts we saw. Highly recommended
This tour was the highlight of my visit to Kyoto. This night ride presented a different feel from our day time exploring. With charming and knowledgeable guides we learned a lot to. Saw so much more than if we were on our own, Geisha and all. Ebike options and small bike for my young son. I was especially glad to have a chance to relax and let someone else lead, as a single parent it gets quite tiring doing that myself all the time. So fun! Thanks guys!
We enjoyed this unique tour. Guide is very friendly and knowledgeable. The only advice is to ensure you’re a fairly proficient bike rider. This is not the ride for first timers. I would recommend only taking the tour if you have a warmer night (over 45 degrees). We went on a night that got down to 35 degrees and windy so impacted our experience so should have factored that earlier ourselves.
No wonder why Night bike with Jaime got 5 stars review from everyone. Jaime is informative, enthusiastic and very entertaining. The bike trip made my Kyoto trip memorable. After the ride Jaime also treated us a dinner for our anniversary. I am really appreciate. 🙏🏼
This was an amazing experience, and the tour guide made it even more special. It’s something you simply can’t experience on your own. I was traveling solo but had the chance to meet new friends and connect with people from all over the world. It was such a great opportunity to socialize and network while enjoying a fun and well-organized tour. I would definitely come back again!
Jaime is the best guide for these kind of tours his attitude and knowledge make this experience way better this is a must try if you go to Kyoto 😉!!!
Awesome tour. Kyoto at night offers a different vibe. A wonderful way to experience the ancient city. Winter a bit cold so be prepared to bring gloves.
I 100% recommend this tour with Jaime. Kyoto is the best city I’ve visited in Japan, and you will definitely enjoy it even more with someone who can explain the history behind all those beautiful places. He is super kind and a nice person.
I want to thank Jaime, my guide on the bicycle tour through Kyoto. He gave me one of the best experiences of my life on my trip through Kyoto. A highly professional person, who gives you an experience and immerses you in Japanese history accompanied by being in fantastic places in Kyoto. I 200% recommend taking this fun and unique tour enriching yourself with Japanese culture.
This turned out to be an absolute highlight of all we did in Japan! Jaime has such a wealth of knowledge and a real zest for life that left us smiling. We gained so much from this tour that we were talking about it for the remainder of our trip. Thanks so much for the wonderful tour Jaime! We will be sure to let our friends know and will stop by for another tour with you when we return to Kyoto!
Jaime is an amazing guide. He has great knowledge about Japanese culture and history. The tour through Kyoto was an amazing experience. I learned a lot and had a lot of fun at the same time. His humor is great. He even teaches you some Japanese with a great method so you can remember it easily. I highly recommend doing a tour with him. It’s so worth it.
Definitely I highly recommend this. We had an amazing time, my family and were really impressed of how our guide handled and answered all of our silly questions. Thanks and looking forward to next time .
Jaime is an excellent tour guide who has a deep knowledge of Kyoto. He took us to some amazing places including many World Heritage listed sites and explained the history and culture of Japan in detail. His joy and enthusiasm was also a big plus on this tour! Would definitely recommend!
Not only was Jaime energetic & very knowledgeable about his beloved city of Kyoto, but he was also highly entertaining, flexible & accommodating to our range of guests. Highly entertaining. Well-recommended-you're in good hands with this guy!
Jaime is an AMAZING guide! We took the night tour. We were lucky enough to be the only ones on the tour. Jaime is a very knowledgeable guide about shrines/temples as well as Japanese culture. The night tour is incredible. This tour was the best thing we did in Kyoto! If you are here in Kyoto, don't miss it!! The tour is also available in English, but we took it in Spanish.
The tour was spectacular, a wonderful experience.. Jaime is an excellent Guide, Come visit I recommend 😃👍✨
