This was a good activity with a few other people who were also friendly and fun. Although most of the food I won't make at home due to the need for special equipment, the recipe for teriyaki sauce was important and the salad was something that can be made easily at home.

Fabulous experience, well worth the money! 3 hours and you make about 6 different things. The whole family enjoyed it, one of our trip highlights.
My wife and I did the Bento Box class on 27 Sept. it was / is a great cooking class and fun lunch to end. Our two teachers were very good. They clearly explained everything about the dishes and of course, how to do everything. They were fun to spend time with and overall, we had a great morning. We’re looking forward to trying out a few things when we get home.
I really liked this cooking class! The teachers were AMAZING, friendly, enthusiastic, and always smiling. They were extremely organized and pleasant. They taught us about Kyoto and I really like learning about background of different Japanese foods. My only complaint would be that the techniques were super easy and i only know basics so was looking for even a slight challenge. A teen could have done this class!
Would highly recommend this activity. Our tutors were friendly, enthusiastic about their cuisine, knowledgeable and engaging. We got to learn a lot about local ingredients and cooking techniques in a relaxed, organised and clean environment. Small group experience and fully English-speaking which made following the instructions very easy. We got to eat the food that we made which was delicious. Couldn’t recommend enough
We had a fantastic time at Cooking Sun! The class was fun, very hands-on, and easy to follow. Our instructor was wonderful, and we really enjoyed both the cooking and the delicious food. A great experience in Kyoto – highly recommended!
Fantastic class. We cooked 6 dishes. Beautiful looking end result with delicious food. Everything was well organised and great instructions from our great teachers. Aircon was wonderful as very hot outside.
My daughter and I had a wonderful experience. The kitchen was well set up and we cooked with 6 others. The recipes were surprisingly easy and very tasty. I need to eat to avoid gluten and dairy and that caused no problems. We were welcomed warmly, all our questions were answered and we made our own lunch that day. I feel confident that I can reproduce the recipes again at home. Don’t hesitate to have a go!
A wonderful experience! Very detailed and friendly instructors that care about educating on the traditions of Japanese cooking. Come hungry!
One of the best experiences of our Japan trip. The whole family loved both the meal and the food itself. As soon as we get home, we’re eager to get the right supplies to cook these meals for ourselves.
Fantasic! These are beginner recipes that give you a very good grasp on the necessities and essence of Japanese dishes! The instructors were awesome and ready to answer any questions, and help where needed.
Excellent experience doing the bento cooking class! The two teachers were very pleasant and patient with us. This class was perfect for a beginner cook and I feel confident in recreating these dishes at home. They didn't just explain how to make the dishes, they also explained about the ingredients and nuances between different types of miso and soy sauce which will help me recreate the dishes at home. There was so much food at the end, I couldn't finish it all! They were very accmodating with my food allergies, as well. After I learned about the dishes (miso soup for example), I realized that I could eat those dishes in other restaurants because they don't have the allergens in them that I can't have so this experience was even more valuable to me than just learning how to cook.
The bento box class was great! Super informative and fun! We will most likely try to recreate the recipes at home. Highly recommended 😊
The trainers spoke English well, were really friendly, knew what they were teaching and made the class fun. They were well organized. I would definitely take another cooking class with them.
Fantastic can only recommend! Really appreciated how experienced the cooks were, their attention to details- they made sure we had learned all we wanted to know! 3 hours long class for a very fair price, on a max of 8 people, so very cozy and friendly atmosphere. And ofc, you get to eat your food at the end ;)
Another great cooking class. The instructors are very good .You make you own lunch box (beto box). You make what ever goes in it and you will eat it with gusto.
A wonderful experience! One of the best Japanese cooking classes I’ve ever taken. You learn the fundamentals through simple, accessible recipes, using high-quality ingredients. Yuka and May are kind, supportive, and very professional. I highly recommend it for anyone wanting to get started with Japanese cuisine!
Great class - very authentic and in a great location. Learned alot of tips and really enjoyed. Would have happier to be a bit more technical and use more Japanese ingredients.
Three hours flew by!!! So much fun. And I even learned a few new cooking techniques. Class is well organized and designed so you really can’t fail. One of my favorite memories from Kyoto. You will leave stuffed!
So much fun, really well organised. It didn't feel like 3 hours as you were very busy with all the cooking. I would highly recommend it.
5 it was an excellent class. We got lucky we were the only couple, however, Tuka our instructor was fantastic.
This was our favorite activity in all of Japan! We were looking for a Japanese cooking class but most were just a single item. In this class with our wonderful chef/teacher Akiko, we made 6 different dishes! From the fluffy rolled omelets, spinach salad with homemade sesame dressing, chicken teriyaki, sushi roll, miso soup from scratch -to the spectacular shrimp and veggie tempura- it was an amazing experience! Akiko was an outstanding teacher who was not only able to explain the history of the ingredients and guide us through making food but also explain the all important presentation of the full bento box. And to top it off- it was all delicious! We had a great time cooking with our teen children and feel confident we could *mostly* reproduce the meal at home! :) We were given the full recipies for the dishes to take home so we feel optimistic! Thank you so much for this amazing experience Akiko-we are so appreciative!
The bento class at Cooking Sun was one of the highlights of our time in Kyoto. My wife and I were the only students in our particular session, so we had a one-on-one class with the chef. The instructions were clear, and the chef not only explained how to make each dish, but she also explained the varieties and uses of Japanese condiments. As we ate the meal that we had prepared, she offered suggestions for other areas of Kyoto to explore, and we followed her recommendations with great results. This is a great way to spend a morning in Kyoto. If we’d had more time, we would have considered the other classes offered by Cooking Sun. My wife and I have done several couples cooking classes at home in Santa Monica, CA, and the price for both of us at Cooking Sun was less than the cost of one person back home. We highly recommend it!
Amino-san was fantastic. She was welcoming, friendly, informative and knowledgeable. She walked us through making 6 different dishes and gave us a great insight into Japanese life. Would highly recommend. Great with kids. And a fantastic lunch at the end.
My Mum and I went to the Obento class. We had a lovely time and Aniko was a great hostess. We made some delicious food and learnt a few tips about how we can do things better when trying to make Japanese food at home. This was my second time at Cooking Sun and I highly recommend it!!
I have food allergies and they were very careful and helpful. The staff explained everything and were very kind.
It was more than I even imagined. The instructors were precise and very informative. I cook a lot of Asian foods and was thankful to have learned some extra stkills that I didn’t know. Thank you.
A fun way to learn and experience Japanese cooking. 12 people were individually supervised by 3 chefs. We learned about the food and what and why a Bento Box is prepared. We made delicious food.
Great class! We attended the Bento box class with the family. The recipes were simple, instructions clear and english was good. Plus, you get to eat the food after!
Fantastic cooking experience! It was very well organised, very clear instructions to follow and easy to understand and most importantly, delicious food. Highly recommend.
This was a great experience. That chefs/hosts made it such a pleasant experience. We had done the Osaka Sun cooking walking tour the day before and then this and both were fantastic. Would do again.
Our time at Cooking Sun was well worth the $75 and the 3.5 hours of time spent. We had 3 lovely chefs helping us to make the ingredients from start to fill our Bento Box lunch Amongst the recipes were sushi, miso soup, gomaae, tempura, teriyaki chicken which were all delicious I would highly recommend this activity while in Kyoto
We booked the Bento-Box course and we had a brilliant experience. Whatever we cooked was incredibly tasty and all the different flavours added up to a perfect lunch-time snack. As I do not eat meat they easily changed my recipes so I created yummy tofu dishes instead of the meaty variety. I can only recommend this course, since the dishes as well as the overall atmosphere were fantastic.
My husband, niece, sister in law, and I took the Bento Box cooking class on July 3, from 9:30-12:30. We had a wonderful time chatting and learning not only how to prepare five dishes but also some Kyoto cooking traditions. Both instructors were so knowledgeable and encouraging. I’d highly recommend this activity for all ages.
Lovely instructor, with great English. Whole experience was fun & informative, & we learnt a lot. We would recommend this lesson & absolutely say don’t have a big breakfast! We brought some sushi away with us! We would also recommend getting a taxi if you aren’t in easy walking distance, for us it wasn’t an easy hop on just one train or bus & it was very hot, too hot to walk. Thank you Cooking Sun
Such a great wee class. Everything is perfectly prepped for you, excellent demonstrations are given and you get a chance to do everything yourself. Food was very tasty and our two teachers were very lovely.
This was literally so much fun! We are so glad we took the bento class because we felt like the recipes would be easy enough to replicate once we get home. The best part was learning to make the rolled egg. Not only did we leave with recipes to use, we also felt like we gained a lot of knowledge about general cooking protocols in Japan. The instructors gave us instruction throughout each step, not only on what to do in each recipe, but also which ingredients to look for in the store and how those ingredients are used in other recipes as well. Truly worth your money-- and a super fun time! Plus, you get to eat what you created at the end!
Had an amazing experience at Cooking Sun, the lady that did our class was lovely and taught us about the ingredients and traditions of Japanese cooking. Everything was very organised and we got to eat our bento boxes after. Would recommend anyone coming to Japan to do this class!
Great bento class .everything is very organized ,instructors are friendly. Learn about Japanese ingredients. Thank you
One of the best experiences I had in Kyoto, super fun to learn some new techniques and tips and tricks. Also the ladies were amazing!
It was great fun. Got to prepare a variety of dishes and learn more about japanese cuisine. Everything was very tasty.
We had an awesome time at this class it was great to learn some new skills. The instructors were great and we highly recommend for something different in Japan
Lovely staff, great experience to learn more about traditional Japanese cooking. Made our own lunch which was a lot more than we could eat.
Our private bento cooking class was one of the highlights of our trip to Japan! Our instructor, Fujiko-san, was an excellent teacher: she was kind, cool, lovely to chat with, and struck a perfect balance between demonstrating techniques and having us do the hands-on cooking. We loved learning more about Japanese cooking tools, ingredients, and flavor profiles, and were amazed that we were able to recreate such delicious dishes ourselves (with Fujiko-san's coaching!). We also had one vegetarian in the group and appreciated that the class allowed everyone to cook to their dietary needs/preferences, with tasty options for both omnivores and non-omnivores. Thank you so much to Fujiko-san and Cooking Sun - we will be recreating these dishes at home often! :)
Fun, informative, and delicious! Went with my teenage daughter and we both loved the class. The instructors are fantastic. A high point of our trip to Japan.
Great activity well run and enjoyable. I booked this mainly for my partner but ended up enjoying it as much.
Welcoming and efficient instructors, with many useful tips. Clean, well-organized facilities and nicely prepared recipe printouts. Overall, an enjoyable experience.
I’m a Japanese-American from California and love to cook. I’ve wanted to make better tempura for a long time and this class gave me good tips and assistance. Additionally, I’ve never made a sushi roll and again, the teachers for our class were helpful and I was successful in meeting my goals. It was a fun and organized class, clean facility, and friendly group. I’d highly recommend this class. Even though I’ve helped family members and watched and cooked most of the recipes in the class for many years, I learned better ways of making three of the items in our cooking class. Thank you to the staff.
Efficient, informative, hands on bento box cooking. We covered sushi, miso soup and at least 3 other dishes. The women were helpful and fun. Highly recommend.
We loved our bento box cooking class. The chefs were friendly and helpful and we picked up som great tips for making it again at home. The food we made was delicious!
