Very informative and fun. Location made it that much more compelling. We booked it last minute, but would recommend booking in advance.

Fantastic experience in Kyoto, super informative with an authentic feel. The tea master had so much focus and precision, it was like watching black belt martial arts of tea. Learned a lot about matcha history and got detailed explanations of what was happening from his very friendly and highly knowledgeable assistant. 10/10 recommend!
Manabu-san the tea master, and his assistant Paul were very welcoming and knowledgeable about the tea ceremony. We learned a lot while at the same time, they were very welcoming and patient as we are newcomers! Would recommend this as an activity for first-timers in Kyoto!
Six of us thoroughly enjoyed our tea ceremony. All staff were warm, friendly, and helpful. We were assisted with our kimonos and with every step of the ceremony. And our older group appreciated the chairs. Thank you for a memorable experience.
This experience was enjoyable and very different to anything Iv gone to before. I was not expecting it to be so calming and spiritual and gentle.
Grear experience and atmosphere. We got a great cup of tea and also got a glimpse into the complex but fascinating culture of Japan.
A great experience. Very informative and interesting and done in a fairly short time to get to know the basics of a Japanese ceremony.
While it is not private, it is definitely intimate. Besides us there was only one other traveler and not much additional room. The tea master and his assistant were very knowledgeable and we learned a lot. Glad we did this. Kimono rental was an extra 1000 Yen but definitely worth it
I knew nothing about japanese tea. Afterwards I have a great appreciation of the beauty of the process. A true cultural experience.
Arrive promptly . We were kept waiting by one group which was annoying and seen as disrespectful to the tea master . Fascinating ceremony .
This was a lovely and informative experience. We really enjoyed learning about the history and meaning behind the tea ceremony and actively participating in the process. We also liked that we had the option to add on a simple kimono rental to feel fully immersed in the experience. We were even able to use what we learned when we were invited to participate in a tea ceremony later in our travels!
My husband and I had a lovely time learning about Matcha and experiencing a traditional tea ceremony with a Tea Master. I especially wanted to learn how to make Matcha and to understand why it is so special (which I did). It was also nice to be able to buy Matcha that was of high quality right in the shop. I was not disappointed and would highly recommend this experience.
This was a lovely cultural experience. I felt the master tea maker really enjoys the ceremony, even though it is very formulated for tourist. Thank you 🙏, it was fun. I highly recommend for a wonderful experience.
It was a lovely blend of experience and education. Our hosts were warm and welcoming. They provided a genuinely moving experience that felt authentic while being approachable.
We did ours today (8/15/2025). It was an awesome Japanese culture experience! The Tea Master and his assistant did a great job educating us. Their price is also better than the others. There is an additional 1,000 yen per person for the kimono rental and it was worth it! They are very accommodating and gave us recommendations for restaurants when we asked them. Thank you Kangetsu!
What a wonderful experience learning about the Japanese Tea Ceremony! Our tea master was artful and graceful in his demonstration. His assistance translated in English. He also demonstrated how to make match tea. They were very patient with all of our questions. The 100 year old house was beautiful! The tea master comes from 17 generations of tea masters! We did this with my 75 year old mother so tables and chairs was a bonus! Highly recommend!
Wonderful experience. It was very informative and was in a beautiful setting. They were very friendly which made it even better.
We booked a private, one-to-one Traditional Japanese Tea Ceremony with a Tea Master, which was supposed to include wearing traditional Japanese attire as part of the experience. However, upon arrival, we were placed in a group session with 13 other participants, and the traditional attire was not provided. At no stage during many correspondence we were informed it was a group setting. This was not the personalized and immersive experience we had paid for and agreed upon in advance. The experience was meant to be intimate and personalized, with only the two of us and the Tea Master present. Had we been informed we would had chosen this option. Really, we are disappointed with the experience.
Great experience and knowing the history of the tea ceremony. The tea master was very knowledgeable and the English interpreter answered all our questions
A rather intimate ceremony with a tea master and host. Our children came along too (11 & 13), and enjoyed the history and activity of the tea ceremony. For those that enjoy tea, its a great way to hear the history of tea in Japan.
The tea ceremony was Informative and lovely—great insight into Japanese culture and a memorable Kyoto experience.
The tea ceremony was very informative. And the tea master was so nice, and offered to let us all take a picture with him. The instructions were clear, and the whole experience was relaxing. They will send you a text explaining where the location is. It wasn’t hard to find at all. Everyone was also so nice. And finally, the tea was the best I’ve ever had. Highly recommend!
Fun and cultural experience. The tea master has excellent experience and gave us good insight into the world of traditional Japanese tea ceremonies. The translator made the experience enjoyable by explaining the process in a step by step way.
Very enjoyable experience. Tea master was very knowledgeable and assistant very friendly. I would recommend it to families.
This was an interesting and educational experience. I really knew nothing about the tea ceremony before and I enjoyed learning about this tradition.
A friendly and interesting view into Japanese tea culture. Our tea master has been learning and practising the craft for many years which meant for a detailed insight into the ceremony. We were able to wear kimonos which added to the experience and enjoyed a selection of Japanese sweets as well as getting the chance to whisk our own matcha. Highly recommend to anyone looking for an informative and friendly tea ceremony whilst in Kyoto!
Very educational, but relaxed and interesting experience. Learned about the history of the Japanese tea culture and it is very admirable how they keep their traditions alive.
The tea ceremony was exceptional. We learned about the history of the practice in a preparation room. Then we had sweets and tea in the tea room. We also got to make our own tea. All the while the significant aspects were explained. It was a very nice experience, that everybody should do!The instructions were very helpful!! One of our favorite activities in kyoto!!!
Amazing Tea Ceremony Experience! I’m a Japanese-American from Hawaii, and this was my first time experiencing a tea ceremony! My relatives in Japan recommended this place, and I’m so glad we came. I wanted my family to experience Japanese culture as well, so we joined together. The tea ceremony at Tea Ceremony & Cultural Experience Kangetsu Kyoto was easy to follow and incredibly enjoyable. They explained the history and traditions in a clear and engaging way, making it a relaxing and meaningful experience. The matcha and sweets were delicious, too! I highly recommend this to anyone interested in Japanese culture. If I visit Kyoto again, I’d love to come back! 😊
Authentic and soothing experience in a beautiful area of Kyoto. You immerse yourself in Japanese culture and learn more about the tea ceremony. Too bad that some participants misbehaved and inconvenienced others. Come only if you are respectful and open-minded!
An oasis of tranquillity in the middle of the crowded Gion district. An outstanding tea master with a charming assistant have taken us wonderfully into the world of tea.
She and I participated in the Japanese Culture Experience Class: Kangetsu Kyoto Ninenzaka tea ceremony. I was able to experience traditional Japanese culture in a quiet and calm atmosphere typical of Kyoto. I was a little nervous at first, but the staff were very kind and easy to understand, so I was able to relax and enjoy. I was able to actually make matcha myself, which was a very valuable time. The Japanese sweets served with the tea were also delicious and aesthetically pleasing. I highly recommend this experience as a memory of your trip to Kyoto! If I have another chance, I'd like to hear from you.
