Itinerary
This is a tea ceremony held by candlelight. We turn the lights off for a simple reason: in the dark, you notice more — the sound of the water, the smell of the tea, the weight of the bowl in your hands. The house is a townhouse in Kyoto, about a hundred years old, kept for most of that time by a traditional textile merchant. The rooms you'll sit in are the rooms they used. You'll move through three of them. The first is bright, where your host meets you and explains what's going to happen. In the second, the light is lower, and you're served a welcome tea with a seasonal sweet. The third is the tearoom itself, lit only by candles, with the garden through the window. Seven guests at most. Then the host makes tea, and you drink it. The bowls are chosen for the day and season. Some are over two hundred years old, some by potters working today. In summer we use glass. Your host will tell you what you're holding. The matcha is grown in Uji and blended to the preference of a tea school's grand master. Your host trained in one of Japan's historic schools of tea. Forty-five minutes. It is unhurried, and there is no etiquette you can get wrong.

Amazing time! So serene and tranquil. Introspective and gorgeous; we really enjoyed our ceremony. One of the best things we’ve done in Japan
Very detailed and clear introduction during the tea ceremony. Location and decor aesthetically pleasing. As we arrived, we were welcomed by our host who moved with quiet precision, creating a calming atmosphere from the moment we started.
Oboro is one of those rare places in Kyoto where time gently loosens its grip. From the moment you step inside the teahouse, the city noise fades, replaced by silence, soft light, and a sense of presence that is increasingly hard to find while travelling in busy cities or so touristy as Kyoto. This is not a “show” or a rushed introduction to the tea ceremony. It is an invitation to slow down. To listen. To notice the weight of the bowl in your hands, the sound of water, the rhythm of breath. Every movement is intentional, every pause meaningful. Nothing feels staged — everything feels real. What made Oboro especially memorable for me was the atmosphere of calm respect and quiet guidance. Even without much prior knowledge, I felt gently held through the experience, never overwhelmed, never rushed. The hosts create a space where curiosity is welcome, and silence feels natural rather than uncomfortable. Kyoto offers many beautiful sights, but Oboro offers something deeper: a moment of stillness that stays with you long after you leave. It reminded me why we travel in the first place — not just to see new places, but to reconnect with ourselves. If you are looking for an authentic, mindful tea ceremony that honours tradition while remaining accessible and human, Oboro is truly special. I recommend it wholeheartedly to anyone who wants to experience Kyoto beyond the surface.
I really loved the Matcha Tea Ceremony this afternoon at the Oboro Tea House. This was my 1st actually Matcha Tea Ceremony and I will never forget it. I loved the whole scenery that was all set up...it was very much calming and relaxing. I would definitely do it again! Arigato Guzaimasu for the beautiful Matcha Tea Ceremony!
It was such a lovely experience that we all enjoyed. The environment, our teacher and the tea all combined to make a wonderful serene experience that our whole family loved
This was our first tea ceremony and we loved it! Our host was lovely, knowledganle and answered our many questions. The tea house was serene and beautiful. All of us were very happy with the experience.

My friends and I enjoyed this experience. Easy to find, not too long, small group for more intimate setting, and friendly hosts. They were also knowledgeable and very polite. The tea was great as well. Thank you!
This experience was so lovely. The setting was so calming. The atmosphere was so peaceful and welcoming and tea ceremony was artfully beautifully. Staff were so delightful and friendly I would recommend this to anyone. Going away from the noise to reflection and gratitude.
This was an amazing tea ceremony. I am so glad I did it. The person doing the ceremony was really great! I felt great gratitude for her sharing the ceremony. The matcha and other tea was very good.
Great experience of a tea ceremony in an old Kyoto tea house once used for traveling merchants and kimono salesmen. Appreciated learning from our young guide and the opportunity to have some high-quality matcha!
Oh my God when I say this is one of the best experiences I have done in Japan. This is no exaggeration. The way the teacher coordinated the class. It was almost mesmerizing watching Japan culture up close I would suggest anyone please go do this even if you don’t like tea
We enjoyed our time at the tea house. Very beautiful experience! Host was very knowledgeable and authentic.
It was a very meditative experience, guided by a soft spoken tea master (Naoki). I appreciated the reflective and quiet space provided to really enhance the sensory parts of a tea ceremony.
Enjoyed learning about the history of tea in Japan and watching the process. My daughter loved the matcha tea and I had the black tea. There is a lot that goes into it. They also gave a dessert treat before we drank the tea which we enjoyed.
Wonderful experience. The host was thoughtful and patient with us as we learned and tasted locally made tea. Thank you!!
This tea ceremony was a great experience for us. It is over 1200 years old and showed us that being mindful and focused while enjoying tea within the company of others is an art form.
This tea ceremony was such a a lovely experience. We enjoyed the special moments and the reminder to take time to be present. The tea house was beautiful and the tea masters were so knowledgeable, kind, and helpful. The tea was delicious and we are inspired to take time for tea more often.
The tea ceremony with Oboro was a truly unique and memorable experience. Our host, Taku, spoke excellent English and was very knowledgeable, helping us appreciate the cultural depth of the tradition. During the session, he demonstrated the preparation of matcha tea with great attention to detail, allowing us to observe and connect with the beauty of this timeless ritual. Guests also had the opportunity to taste the freshly prepared matcha. Held in a beautiful old Japanese house, the setting added charm and authenticity. The atmosphere was calm and peaceful—perfect for experiencing traditional Japanese culture. Highly recommended for anyone looking to glimpse Japan’s rich traditions and enjoy a relaxing, reflective moment in Kyoto. Thank you to Taku and Ryoko for such a wonderful experience.
