The hotel’s location is ideal for guests who enjoy a bit of action and atmosphere. However, it was often quite noisy at night due to the very busy street. The housekeeping staff were very friendly and always did excellent work. The staff at reception and the bar, on the other hand, were neither friendly nor particularly attentive. The housekeeping team appeared better trained than the rest of the staff. There are certainly individual exceptions, but overall the service was not up to standard. This is not what we expect from a five-star hotel

Excellent location, set behind one of the busiest shopping streets and very central so everything is walkable, yet with being on the river the setting is very peaceful. Common areas are lovely to lounge in. Loved the library. Staff are not the warmest, which is unusual for Japan. Rooms are tiny, nowhere to open a suitcase, we just had ours open in the middle of everything and had to keep stepping over it. Our room had lots of natural light. Everything was very clean, decor simple and basic. I would stay again, but only if I got a good deal on the room rate as I feel the average prices for a room here are way too expensive ordinarily.
At all of the Gate Hotels we stayed at, we particularly enjoyed: • The breakfast buffets, with plenty of fruit and vegetables. • The kind, prompt and friendly service provided by all members of staff. • The clean bathrooms and consistently good housekeeping. • The complimentary bottles of water provided each day, as well as the convenience of being able to buy water and other drinks from the hotel vending machines. • The exceptionally quick checkout process. We simply returned our key cards and were ready to leave. • The excellent locations, close to subway stations and the neighbourhoods and restaurants we wanted to visit. • The beautiful bar and breakfast areas. • The efficient air conditioning, with an additional standalone air-conditioning unit available in the room. • A very good steam iron in the room • Slippers, bathrobes and pyjamas were provided. Used slippers were replaced daily. Regarding The Gate Hotel in Kyoto specifically: The views from the bar and breakfast restaurant were truly beautiful. A traditional Japanese-style breakfast was also available, which was a lovely experience. Only a limited number of servings were offered each day, but I was fortunate enough to be able to try it.
My son and I really enjoyed our stay at The Gate Hotel. The location is excellent, with convenient access to shops, restaurants, nightlife, and public transportation, including both bus and metro stations. The hotel itself is beautiful, clean, and very comfortable. They offer everything you need for the room: toothbrushes, toothpaste, brush, hand cream, razors, shaving cream, pajama sets, slippers, hair dryer, etc. One of the highlights was the bar and lounge area on the third floor, which offers complimentary non-alcoholic beverages such as coffee and tea, snacks, and even free wine during designated hours. It was a wonderful place to relax after a day of sightseeing and chat with other tourists around the fire pit. Most importantly, the hotel staff were exceptionally friendly, welcoming, and helpful throughout our stay. Their outstanding service made our visit even more enjoyable. I would definitely stay here again and highly recommend The Gate Hotel to anyone visiting Kyoto.
Fabulous experience. We stayed in the exclusive twin room. The room is very spacious, comfortable, has a great view. Breakfast is very good. The staff is super nice. I highly recommend the lounge & patio where there’s both indoor and outdoor fire. It has a great vibe. All in all, it offers exceptional value for the money.
