The hotel is almost hidden from the street but soo conveniently located next to the Yasaka shrine and Gion District. What makes this place great though is the small details, peace, tranquility and the staff/service. Everyone goes out their way to make sure you feel at home and comfortable. The lounge with limitless matcha and snacks is peaceful and perfect to just sit back and feel calm. The details around the hotel are amazing, i stayed in the original hall and the details were perfect but it’s again those little details with the alcoves and positioning of artefacts and such that is designed to invoke Japanese simplicity and tranquility. You have to try it and I’d totally go back just for a retreat as it’s that peaceful there

We recently stayed at Sowaka for four nights and had an excellent experience. Our room, 209, was spacious, comfortable, and cozy. It provided a peaceful retreat after a full day of exploring Kyoto. The property itself is beautifully maintained and blends traditional Kyoto charm with modern comfort. The service was exceptional throughout our stay. Issa gave us a warm welcome and took the time to introduce the hotel and its facilities. Wendy was incredibly kind and helpful, especially when assisting with a room comfort issue. We also greatly appreciated Yula's help on our departure day with our luggage and taxi arrangements, which made our trip to the station smooth and stress-free. The restaurant team also deserves special recognition. Every morning they remembered our preferences and provided attentive, thoughtful service that made us feel genuinely cared for. The location is another highlight. Many of Kyoto's most popular attractions are within walking distance, yet the hotel feels tucked away from the crowds, offering a peaceful and relaxing atmosphere. Thank you to everyone at Sowaka for making our Kyoto stay so memorable. We would gladly stay here again on our next visit.
My recent stay at SOWAKA was truly unforgettable. From the moment we arrived, Wendy warmly welcomed my fiancé and me through the beautiful garden entrance. Although we arrived at 9 AM, the staff happily stored our luggage and offered refreshing drinks and snacks while we waited. As a Hilton Diamond member, breakfast was included, and I highly recommend the traditional Japanese breakfast. After a full day exploring Kyoto, we returned to find that we had been upgraded to Room 208. Our luggage, fruit, and snacks were already waiting for us, and the peaceful garden view paired with soft Zen music created the perfect atmosphere. The hospitality was exceptional throughout our stay. Wendy assisted us again at checkout, even helping communicate with our taxi driver for our Shinkansen transfer. I especially appreciated the personal touches—the staff greeted us by name throughout our stay and even had our shoes prepared outside our room before departure. SOWAKA was absolutely worth the splurge for our honeymoon. The service, attention to detail, and unique character of each room made this one of the best hospitality experiences I've ever had.
My husband and I had the privilege of staying at this luxury hotel, and our experience was truly exceptional. Even though we arrived late in the evening, we were warmly welcomed at the front entrance. Since the hotel preserves the traditional ryokan atmosphere, we were kindly asked to remove our shoes, provided with slippers, and personally accompanied to our room. Our room was absolutely beautiful. Upon arrival, we were welcomed with traditional sake and Kyoto sweets, both of which were delicious. The sake, in particular, was outstanding. Also, the breakfast is phenomenal. The staff were incredibly kind, attentive, and accommodating throughout our stay. Housekeeping serviced the room twice daily, including evening turndown service. They also consistently restocked the fridge with water and apple juice, honestly, (best apple juice we’ve ever had). The location is another huge highlight, with many popular attractions within walking distance, including Yasaka Shrine (about 2–3 minutes away), Hōkan-ji Temple / Yasaka Pagoda (approximately 7–10 minutes away), and the historic Gion streets. Overall, our stay was nothing short of amazing.
My stay at Sowaka was nothing short of exceptional. The hotel’s design is absolutely beautiful—deeply rooted in traditional Japanese aesthetics, yet refined with a sense of quiet luxury that perfectly complements its surroundings in the heart of Gion District. Being in such a historic and atmospheric area made the entire experience feel even more special and immersive. Although my room was located in the annex (room 212) rather than the main building, it exceeded all expectations. It was spacious, minimalist, and thoughtfully designed in a way that instantly made me feel calm and relaxed. Every detail felt intentional, from the layout to the materials used. I especially appreciated the heated floors—even in the bathroom—which added an extra layer of comfort, particularly after long days of exploring Kyoto. What truly sets this hotel apart, however, is the people. The staff, both at the hotel and in the restaurant, were incredibly warm, welcoming, and attentive. Every interaction felt genuine and caring—I never encountered a single issue during my stay. In fact, my daily exchanges with them became something I genuinely looked forward to, and they often felt like the perfect way to begin or end my day. Everything about Sowaka is amazing, from its serene atmosphere to its impeccable service. It is a place that leaves a lasting impression, and I will most definitely return again in the future.
