We had an amazing time on our day trip to Zalipe. Maciej was our tour guide. He picked us up on time and we saw numerous things on our two hour drive to Zalipe. Maciej even stopped so we could get coffee and use the facilities. Upon arrival in Zalipe we went to the old museum which had a few different buildings to see and a video in the barn on the history of how the Zalipe flowers were painted. Maciej then took us to various houses and gardens to see the amazing flowers. We then stopped for coffee and visited before continuing on to another newer museum and the School of Zalipe painters where they teach classes to children and anyone wanting to learn the art. We were able to watch the painters and were able to purchase souvenirs from both locations. The outdoor flower gardens were amazing. Maciej then took us to a farm that his good friends owned. We got to play fetch with the dogs, watch grandma painting and were able to shop in their shed for more painted Zalipe treasures. They were such a lovely family and we were happy we got to meet and visit with them. From there we continued on, saw a couple more houses and gardens then Maciej took us to the Catholic Church. The women in Zalipe were the ones who painted the interior of the church. The church was breathtaking. We were so happy we got to visit it and take all the pictures we wanted. After the church Maciej offered to take us to some more gardens but we opted to get on the road back since we had the two hour drive. Maciej was a wonderful tour guide who you could tell loved his country and was very knowledgeable. If you get a chance while visiting Krakow book a tour through Viator with Maciej for a day trip to Zalipe. You will not be disappointed.

Zalipie- colourful village, is famous for the decoration of its houses, with cheerful paintings on the walls and stoves, and crepe-paper flowers, paper-cut designs and hay spiders. This tradition has existed in the Powiśle Dąbrowskie region since the end of the 19th century. Flowers were also painted on external walls of peasant cottages and farm buildings, on fences, wells and even kennels. In Zalipie, there are now around 20 painted houses. The best known example of this original folk artwork is the homestead of Felicia Curyłowa (currently a branch of the District Museum of Tarnów), a Zalipie painter whose painting was already known in the period between the wars. During our tour, you will get to see beautiful decorated private houses and gardens, chapels (more than in the description below), the Felicja Cyrołowa Museum, the House of painters, church, Zalipie village around.

This is about 1.5 hours comfortable drive from Krakow. My family really enjoyed this unique experience. Our guide Matthew (Macek) was very interesting and informative. He gave us an amazing recommendation for dinner when we got back to Krakow. Best potato pancakes ever!
My friend and I did not participate in a tour. We drove there ourself and we did not regret. This village outside of Krakow, is very unique. Many house are hand painted with beautiful, colorful flower like ornaments. Each house has it's own unique decorations going from generation to generation. We learned that each year, there is a competition and villagers paint their houses from the scratch. It is really worthy to spend a couple of hours to stroll through that village, especially when weather is nice.
Every thing was memorable. The tour guide excellent. Everything i was expecting and more. Would highly recommend it. Linda
Tomasz was easily one of the most knowledgeable tour guides I’ve ever met. On the way to Zalipie, he regaled us with information on every building and village we passed. Within the village itself, he was able to to introduce us to many local artists and even bring us inside their homes in a way that would have never been possible if we’d traveled to Zalipie by ourselves. It was one of the best travel experiences of my life. Not only that, but it was also one of the easiest. All I had to do was book the tour, and from that moment on every aspect of the day was fully arranged and taken care of.
Our day with Maciej was a highlight of our trip to Poland. Active Poland was easy to communicate with and I booked our trip before we left Canada. We were picked up right on time and Maciej drove the hour and a half to Zalipie. We never could have done this trip on our own. He knew where all of the unique painted houses were located and had a good relationship with the owners. He was knowledgable in the areas history and spoke excellent English. I would book another trip with Poland Active at any chance. Also ask Macicj to stop for delicious waffles.
Everything was just perfect! Thank you for this great journey ☺️ Your driver is a professional! We kindly recommend!
Maciej arrived promptly to our hotel to pick us up in his van. He was a very safe and cautious driver obeying speed limits. The drive to Zalipie took approx 2 hours, a very scenic drive. Maciej is an encyclopedia, he gave us plenty of historical information. He showed us numerous points of interest along the way. We stopped at Sw Norberta, a beautiful and breathtaking church. In Zalipie, Maciej is well know amongst the locals, we made numerous stops to meet the locals with their beautiful painted houses. Maciej was extra helpful with my mother with some mobility issues and very patient. During the drive, Maciej slowed down to allow us to take photos and pointed out a beautiful stork in its rooftop nest. We returned via highway back to Krakow, Maciej was Full if stories and information. Definitely recommend this excursion, it was a highlight of our trip to Krakow!!!
My parents, girlfriend, and I had an incredible day experience on our trip to Zalipie guided by Maciej. From the moment Maciej greeted us at our hotel we knew we were going to have a wonderful day led by an incredibly knowledgeable, professional, and kind local expert. On the journey from Kraków to Zalipie he brought us through picturesque countryside and was able to share some information about the region. He listened to us and the things we were interested in to curate an experience that aligned with what we hoped to learn about the surrounding area. (Note: there is the cleanest and nicest gas station stop along the way there that has has some snacks you can buy for the day ahead, and throughout the journey plenty of restrooms available at different stops.) Once we arrived at Zalipie, he took us to approximately 8 different stops and another 5 or so locations that we could drive by to take pictures and learn about the home from the comfort of the van. At each stop, the women who have helped to make Zalipie so beautiful graciously opened their homes to us and we were able to interact with them (with help from Maciej’s warm relationship with them and his Polish translation for us). On the way home, Maciej took us a different route to maximize the different things we could see. (He even pulled over on the side of the road so my father, who has gotten a recent interest in birds, could take a picture of a magnificent stork nest along the route.) The entire experience was a great way to not only see and learn about the lovely community of Zalipie, but also to get a look at some of the smaller areas east of Kraków generally, led by an excellent, thoughtful local guide. Definitely recommend to anyone looking to get out of the city and learn more about the beauty (in many forms) of the Polish people.
My wife and I have been wanting to take this trip for several years. It was worth the wait. Our guide Matthew was excellent and engaging, and went out of his way to make sure we saw the full breadth of the folk paintings at many of the Zallipie homes and buildings, and also made some worthwhile stops en route. The paintings are warm and welcoming, as were the people behind them. Matthew's van was comfortable, and he was always concerned with our well-being. A good day trip from Krakow on good roads.
Driver Matthew very good, knowledgeable and beyond helpful had a lovely time enjoying driving around this unique village
I LOVED this trip! Our tour guide, Maciej (or Matthew) was incredibly knowledgeable not only on Zalipie, but also on Poland's history and geography. He was kind, paid attention to our needs and answered every question that we had, while also making the trip very fun. The tour itself is wonderful. The houses are colourful, each one having a different pattern. You can see and feel the passion and pride each of the painters had for their project.
An incredible experience! Such a beautiful place with such an interesting history, and it’s wonderful to see they’re keeping the tradition alive. My tour guide Matthew (Mateusz?) was amazing. He is very friendly, kind, and knowledgeable. Not only did he take me by all the tourist highlights, but also to the little secret spots the average person wouldn’t know to go to. You can only pay in cash at the little shops, so make sure to bring some!
I was so happy to get this tour to Zalipie and on the way we stopped at the hotel/monastery/art gallery at Hebdow which was super interesting. Our guide was very knowledgeable and made sure we could stop to take photos and translated for us too!
The floral art on these homes is stunning. Driver/guide Michal was friendly and accommodating. When he found out I wanted to see a stork in Poland, he made of point of keeping an eye out for them on the way to Zalipie - we saw several. Well worth the trip.
we only asked for a driver, but got a very knowledgeable guide, who spoke great english and had a good sense of humor - just perfect!
Visit to the village of the painted and enchanted houses. A day of heart full of love, color and peace ❤️
beautiful village painted in an original way and preserved very well. .small tour but overall very well planned with very comprehensive guide
Magnificent to discover if you go to southern Poland. The whole village is painted, even the square, the hutches, the dog's kennel.... We are not going there in July 2023 but in 1996, not planned in the online document....
Passeio super agradável, cidade uma graça,motorista super atencioso e simpático. Super indico. Passamos um dia muito agradável.
Rewelacyjny przewodnik Pan Maciej, który dał z siebie 1000%. Kompetentny, zaangażowany, solidny, życzliwy, czujny i mega sympatyczny.
I'm really excited about this tour. The guide, punctual and always very attentive, made me discover "hidden" places along the way to Zalipie. I was really impressed by his attitude and kindness. The village of Zalipie is also worth a visit: the decorations on the houses are special and make this place unique. The village of Niepołomice is also interesting to visit and you can stop here for lunch.
