We wanted to do something special in Hanalei. They are still recovering from the hurricanes wrath. We were staying in Princeville and spent most of 2 days in Hanalei. Our food tour was with Nalu(sp?). He was simply fabulous. Although our food options were limited, he made our tour informative, interesting AND delicious. We had taro fritters at Big Nick's, musubi (from the ABC store), fresh fruit smoothies from the fruit stand and a Hawaiian hot dog from the hot dog stand. Our tour ended with the most delicious chocolates from Chocolat Hanalei. Best of all, we got to hear first-hand stories about Hanalei and Kauai from Nalu. He was a terrific guide and we were so lucky to share a part of our day with him. We went back to Big Nick's for burgers and had dinner at Ama's, where we spent time chatting in the back space. Thank you!!
Our guide Nalu was amazing! Visited so many food spots, learned about the island history. Just perfect!
The food tour was awesome! We went to a bunch of places to grab a bite and I was stuffed full! Our guide was really friendly and it was nice seeing all the places recovering after the hurricane. I highly recommend this food tour for anyone travelling to Hanalei.
A must! Max shares the history of the local area while indulging in Hawaii special dishes! We will definitely be back to catch up with Max again!
Tour guide, Nalu, is a knowledgeable local whose heart for food and culture emanates through specialty selections and a respect for the people and land. An experience to be remembered beyond food!
Must-try for foodies!!! We had a fantastic time! Max was knowledgeable, friendly, and attentive to our preferences. The food was all authentic, delicious, and a great value! It was well-paced and very enjoyable.
The variety of offerings and quantity of food was great. Our guide would sometimes talk/share info while walking down the busy streets making it difficult for everyone to hear. There was also some waiting around time for vendors to prepare the foods resulting in the tour running long. Luckily we were not in a hurry.
Disappointing tour over all. The good - Friendly host, good information sharing, historical context etc. The bad - we only really had one stop where we got food and that was the very first restaurant… after that we got offered a meager offerings across 2 other locations. The host seemed not to have planned stops at the various places and since many places were busy we just walked by many vendors and did nothing. In the end, we really didn’t do that much food tasing at all. And we spent quite a bit on this for a large group. We have been on many food all over and all of them have offered much more than this tour. I would avoid.
1st off, we waited over a hour to receive a puny donut ! ( 1 person operation ) but Max , our tour guide failed to tell us how long we’d have to wait - knowing that there were several orders ahead of us! We had to buy our own water! Then he walked at a fast clip- leaving us several blocks behind. I asked him to slow down but he failed to change his pace. We next received a poy, rice & smoked pork dish - horrible. Then we got a hot chili chicken with rice & macaroni salad . The chicken was very good . Then 2 chocolates. Costing : $ 278!!! Plus we paid $260 to drive us to this revolting tour! We could have gone to the best restaurant in town and still not paid this exorbitant amount !
This was an enjoyable food tour. We do these frequently when we travel. Max was a good host, and the food he chose was quite tasty. We got to see a good portion of Hanalei, and we enjoyed the food. That makes this a win.
Max was an incredible host! He was so knowledgeable and knew EVERYONE! Friendly and accommodating anything we could desire. A+++ Highly Recommended
Our guide, Max, introduces you to an authentic Hawaii. In addition, he brings his warm personality and love of the island and its people along with him.
We had delicious food while we walked about in Hanalei. We were hoping for a bit more of history and cultural information while we enjoyed our food.
Max was wonderful and he took care of our group which included ages 5 to 74. The food was great and we enjoyed the whole experience. Thanks again for a wonderful day.
It was a fun activity and plenty of food 👍🏻. Walked around the town and sampled 3 savory and one dessert
Donuts, taro fritters, poke, jack fruit gyros (so good!), the best chicken ever, hanalei chocolates and an awesome guide (Max) offering loads of history and knowledge, don’t even think about it, DO IT!
Come hungry and be ready for some great local specialties! Our group had a fun time with our guide Max.
Our guide Max was great! He took his time and didn’t rush us. He shared the local history behind the food and the local restaurants. A good variety of food and plenty to eat!
We arrived for our tour and there was one other couple. The tour guide showed up and seemed very nice and knowledgeable of the local town but seemed to lack a specific agenda or plan. We did end up covering most of the town and eateries and left well fed and more knowledgeable. We did feel like the tour was a bit over priced for what we got.
Despite the weather, which at times was a torrential downpour, Max persevered. We enjoyed the food, especially the Taro cakes from Big Nicks and the Holy Grail Donuts. He is very knowledgeable about the island and we loved that he took us to family owned businesses. We definitely learned about the culture and people of the island on the tour. Good luck on restoring your fishing boat. We very much enjoyed our time with you.
Great sampling of Taro based foods. Max was very informative not only in the background of the food but of highlights of the town of Hanalei
This was a great opportunity to discover small eatery operations in the Hanalei area. Also a chance to try different cuisines/food types that the less adventurous wouldn’t order off of a menu. The one downside was that our group had people with multiple food allergy issues (pork and shellfish) which limited our selection of eateries. It would have been useful to get a list at the end of the tour of the places that were avoided because of that.
Miles was a great guide and to us to local favorite spots. All the food was excellent and we would absolutely do this tour again.
The walking food tour was great. Max, our tour guide was very pleasant and knowledgeable. The fact that he didn’t cancel because there were only two of us was appreciated. It turned out to be a private tour for my sister and I. The food we tasted were all very delicious, with the chili pepper fried chicken being our favorite. We definitely recommend this activity while on Kauai.
Best food tour on Kauai! Max was a knowledgeable and personable guide who clearly loves the food and culture of the Island. I highly recommend this tour-you won't be disappointed!
Max had so much to offer regarding culture and food and history and how it all inter related here in Kauai. I am so much more in the know of the delights of this island. We are so happy we had this experience and Max was a wealth of information. I put this as a must do if you’re interested in the Cultur and Food here in kawai
Max was awesome! Food was amazing. We ate some things we had never tried before and loved them! We had a great time and will recommend this highly ❤️
We had a great time with our guide Max. He's super chill, accommodating and very knowledgeable of the area. We enjoyed trying different food and learning about the town and people. It's like having a friend showing us around.
Overall a good time and well informed guide. It is worth the time and money. Possibly bring water. It was a bit warm.
It was great and more food than expected! Great information and great storytelling! Food was authentic and delicious.
Wonderful. Learned so much about Hawaii and Kauai history while tasting incredible food. Max was amazing.
Only went to 3 food places • fish place for 5 very small servings of sashimi • 4 pieces of fried taro and beans small patties • 3rd place place, we received 2 friend chicken, macaroni and rice • 4th and last place - we received 2 pieces of chocolate truffle I’ve been to Catalina island walking food tour, and we visited 8 restaurants including dessert place. This Hanalei walking food tour was not worth the $139 we each paid for.
Great guide and yummy food. Really enjoyed the pepper chicken and the donuts. We even got a little Hawaiian history tour
We were hoping to have more historical information about Hanalei and perhaps origin of food (ie. taro). Also guide walked forward at head of group when talking on busy street (perhaps walking backwards so we could hear comments). Also quite expensive considering the food provided.
It was a fun activity for a few hours and supports local business. Tour guide was great however dietary alerts were not conveyed to the guide even though they were noted during purchase. This happened with two of the three parties on the tour.
Really fun & interesting food tour. Host Max knew the food trucks/restaurants, people behind the scenes & area well. It seemed a bit pricey but in the end these are the experiences one always remembers.
Our guide Max was awesome. It’s a nice little town. We walked around tried different food items with amazing food stories that are local to this Hanalei coast. It’s definitely worth a visit again. Maybe next time we can stay there. A great way to see the town with a local!
Great food and a great guide. Also enjoyed learning about the history of Hawaii. It is a tour worth taking
We had a wonderful time with Max! Being food tour guides ourselves in New Orleans we understand what makes a good food tour and Max definitely delivered. His food choices and unbelievable knowledge made every stop enjoyable. We also appreciated that they decided to book us even though we were the only 2 guests booked for that day. Do the tour first thing so Max can fill the rest of your stay with great recommendations! Oh and bring an extra stomach!
Don’t eat breakfast that morning. So much food is served! Easy, short walk between food stops. Sampled full size portions at 6 locations. Friendly guide. Enjoyable afternoon.
We really enjoyed trying the local food choices; of which included: sweet chili fried chicken, various poke samples, fresh squeezed juices or açaí bowl, local chocolates made through the entire process by the merchant. Further, we were given local history.
We were disappointed. We had understood it was going to be a tour of restaurants and assumed there would be samples or small plates at each stop. We were given an entree and side dishes at our meeting location. That was filling. Next we walked to our next stop and had taro fritters. Then we walked back to our meeting location and could choose anything from the Aloha Fruit Bar. Then we met up in a peaceful and shady location to enjoy that treat. We walked next to a chocolate shop and tasted the delicious chocolate. That was the end of our tour. The guide was friendly and knowledgeable and provided lots of information at each stop. However I didn’t sign up for just an hour of friendly conversation. I had hoped to sample a variety of good. So we were very disappointed.
We came expecting to go to multiple restaurants and have small plates to sample. Instead we had 4 stops. The first place we met we were given an entree with sides. That was a complete meal. We then walked and had taro fritters. Next we returned to our starting location and chose something from the Aloha Juice Bar. Our last stop was a chocolate shop and we sampled their candy. That was it. I was very disappointed. The guitars kind and interesting but I thought there would be more stops.
This tour had some very good food included. We got some Kahlua pork, poke, taro fritters, taro doughnuts and chocolate. The tour guide was knowledgeable and friendly.
Great little tour. Good to do early in trip so you know all the good places.l to eat. Guide was great!
What a fun and informative food tour of Hanalei! Great food choices and interesting background stories. Enjoyed our guide's expertlse and insights
Great food choices and stories to match. The food was delicious and even had some choices of what we wanted as well. Very knowledgeable for sure.
Had an amazing time on the food tour with Max! He was super friendly, fun, and made the whole experience so enjoyable. The food was delicious. Thank you, Max!
Great knowledge of local food and Hawaiian history and culture. Food was fun and good. Easy walk around the area.
