Auntie Karen was a hoot. Taught us many things about the island. Was quite evident how much she loves the islands.

Lili’uokalani Gardens, is the largest, authentic Edo-style ornamental garden outside of Japan. Liliuokalani Gardens features Japanese imported stone lanterns, sculptures, arched bridges and gazebos from as early as 1916. The garden highlights plant species and building styles drawn from traditional Japanese temples and gardens. As you stroll along Waihonu Pond, crossing arched red bridges over koi ponds to pagodas, and a Japanese traditional teahouse named Shoroan, you might feel like you’re transported to the incredible temples of Kyoto.
The Hilo bayfront Beach Park was conveniently located in the town of Hilo, which is also known as Crescent Bay and it is one of the most beautiful coastal scenery in Hilo. It is also the largest sandiest beach in the Hilo area.
Historic charm of Plantation-era buildings, colorful storefronts and Hilo's Landmarks. All located in the heart of Hilo Bay.
The Rainbow Falls cascade 80 ft over a lava cave that, according to legends, is home to the ancient Hawaiian goddess Hina, the goddess of the moon. The short climb to the top of the rainbow falls is well worth the effort. As you climb up along the left shoulder of the falls you walk past lush vegetation and some HUGE banyan trees. After walking for a few minutes you will be rewarded with a new perspective on the falls.
Established in 1977, Big Island Candies is home to Hawaii’s finest cookies, chocolates and confections. Only the freshest, highest quality ingredients go into their products. They proudly feature Big Island macadamia nuts and 100% pure Kona and Ka`u coffee from farms on Hawaii Island.
The park climbs from sea level to more than 13,000-feet, encompasses two volcanoes – Kīlauea, one of the world’s most active volcanoes and Maunaloa, the world’s largest active subaerial volcano – and six of Earth’s climate zones along the way. On this tour, we will get a close look at the Kilauea crater, then visit the geothermal steam vents, Thurston Lava Tube, and the Chain of Craters Road to see the spectacular scenic of the solidified black lava.

The tour was kind of disappointing in my opinion. I guess I expected more. Auntie Karen was very difficult to hear as she was driving and she was babbling on about her family. I was not interested in her family history as I would have been about island history. I also did not like the option provided for lunch. There really was no choice other than a boxed lunch at the macadamia nut factory. Certainly there have to be more choices for lunch on the island of Hilo.
Our tour guide, Karen, was the best! She made us feel welcome and shared many of her own experiences in relationship to the places we were seeing. Despite the weather being foggy and rainy up on the mountain, she made our day most enjoyable!!! Rainbow Falls was one of the highlights of the tour!
Other than the weather being miserable and we were unable to visit Kilauea, the guide (Auntie Karen) made a super effort to make out visit worth whiĺe.
Auntie Karen was a great tour guide! Explain so much about the island and the Hawaiian traditions and history. The volcano and the lava tube were definitely the highlights of the day.
It’s hard to describe how good of a guide “auntie Karen” is. She is knowledgeable, passionate about Hilo a great story teller. I can’t recommend this tour enough.
It was fantastic, guides are local and very knowledgeable they shared life experiences and personal recommendations as well as made extra stops just for us.
Fantastic tour, beautiful scenery and Volcano National park was amazing, highly recommend this tour.
This would have been a great tour but the bus was hot. When we started the tour we sat up front, but were told we were switching buses. We got off and then picked up a bunch of other passengers. I ended up at the very back of the same bus. I asked about the AC and was told that it was on full blast. On the way back they finally opened up the windows and that was decent. After lunch all the windows were shut again. Way too much money to be hot and miserable most of the day. The driver and the guide were very nice and seemed to be doing their best.
My girlfriend and I just made it to the volcano on July 15th, our last picture was at 4:15 pm, the volcano stopped erupting at 4;45 pm. What a site it was. Anyone who can make there to see it, it's totally worth your effort.
It was a good tour. Sadly there were a lot of clouds and we couldn’t see the mountains but still got to experience the lava fields, lava tube and we saw a turtle. We were a small group… my family was four and there were nine total in the group. It was a great tour, the guide was informative and interesting.
It was a great experience! Unfortunately we had rain and clouds but it did not take away from the beauty of the sites! The crater was amazing to see! The lava tube was great! The waterfall was so pretty too! They were so easy to communicate with because we were coming in by cruise ship and had to go through immigration upon arrival. They waited for us and we joined the group a few minutes late. Cousin Ernie was great! He shared his knowledge of the island with us and added to the experience. Thank you for a great day!
Auntie Karen was an excellent tour guide on this trip. Very informative, great sites and overall good tour. One downside was the choice for the lunch stop. It was after 300pm at a run down food court with limited options. Other than that, it was a great time.
This tour was our least favorite during our visit to Hawaii. Our tour guide was knowledgeable but seemed a little disinterested. Our lunch stop was a food court near Walmart with zero healthy options and nothing our kids would actually eat. We stopped at a Macadamia nut farm for lunch around 2 pm (tour started at 9am) and the kids were really hungry but the cafe had closed for the day, hence the food court. You can drive to the volcano and the steam vents and lava tube without paying hundreds of dollars for a tour. Save yourself the time and money and drive yourself.
Auntie Karen was a fabulously entertaining guide. We loved her stories! The stops were all well organized and interesting. We would absolutely recommend this tour!
Pick up was good collect at the port Was expecting more information on the sightseeing tour And thought the tour guide would come with us and show us what we were looking at and directions where to go !! Nearly drove off without two people on the tour! Need to always do a head count!
The tour agent stopped at a grocery store for lunch - She said there was a deli inside the grocery store where we could buy sandwiches. In truth, the deli only would slice meats. It did not assemble sandwiches at the deli counter. The store had only 2 choices of pre-made sandwiches: tuna sandwich or egg salad sandwiches - Both were not good. I knew this grocery store was a problem when neither the tour agent nor the driver went inside the grocery store - They brought their own food from home. Very disappointing choice. The tour company should be ashamed for selecting such a terrible place for us to buy lunch!
This tour was incredible. Ernie, our tour guide was superb. Very knowledgeable and pleasant. Ernie gave us flexibility with our stops. Would definitely do again!!
Tour guide was patient and knowledgeable. She made sure everyone knew the time fir each stop so that we did not miss anything.
This tour was good—it covered a lot of territory and we saw a number of sites on the big island. What would have made it better was if our guide had gotten out at some of the stops and provided more information on what we were seeing, e.g., at the various volcano stops. After a while it became more of a hop on/off type experience.
Marissa was wonderful. She took us everywhere and gave us tips for our next stop. She was very informative and helpful.
Marissa was our guide/driver and she was amazing! She was very knowledgeable about the volcanoes and history of Hawaii. She was flexible in case the volcano decided to erupt and would have changed our tour around to maximize our time to see the best things. We would highly recommend this tour and Marissa.
This was a great tour, we headed to Volcano National Park and Rainbow Falls. Our guide was Cousin Ernie and we was Fabulous, He took us to Volcano National Park first to he beat the crowds so we had plenty of time. We then made out way back to Hilo were he showed us more sights, and we had plenty of free time to grab lunch and shop. Ernie, being a native to the Big Island had prenty of information to share. I would do this tour again.
Rainbow Falls was beautiful. Volcanoes National Park was neat. We saw sea turtles at a beach. The guide was very talkative. It was an enjoyable excursion.
We had such a wonderful experience today exploring Volcano National Park and Rainbow Falls in Hilo with our tour guide, Marissa. She was engaging, entertaining, informative, and made the entire day so interesting from start to finish. You could tell she truly loves what she does and loves sharing the beauty and history of Hawaii. She also made us feel completely comfortable the whole day with her excellent driving and calm, friendly energy. The tour wouldn’t have been the same without her. Highly recommend! 🌋🌿🌈
Marissa was great. She got us to the volcano while it was erupting! She had great information and made us all feel special!
No matter how wonderful the sights are, it’s the tour driver that really makes a tour great and Marissa was awesome! She made it a priority to get us up to the volcano that began erupting at 8am this morning for this once in a lifetime experience to watch firsthand an eruption. It was spectacular and I really felt privileged to see it on my first visit to Hawaii. The remainder of the tour was very enjoyable, Marissa shared a lot of history and her own humor with us.
Auntie Karen gave a fabulous tour! Not only did she take us to all the places required, she took us by long's drugstore at the request of one of the others on the tour so we could all stock up on some personal items. Our lunch spot was top notch too, as some had fish sandwiches and my spouse and I shared a chicken katsu platter. Yummy. Auntie Karen also told us many entertaining stories about life on the island and family gatherings. You will really enjoy her tales! She works for Green tours.
This was a great Excursion. Uncle Ernie was exceptional informative and just had a wonderful time. Almost did not want to go back to the cruise ship.
Got picked up right at the cruise port. Went to a black sand beach. We stopped at a local market and got made to order sandwiches that we took to the Volcano Park. Saw the crater from two different locations. We walked two different trails throughout the park, which included a walk through a lava flow tunnel. The trip ended at a chocolate factory. Mike our guy, was very good and very knowledgeable about the area.
Mike was a good communicator, knows Hilo and gave us he history as well as what we were looking at. Unfortunately, the weather did not cooperate. The clouds and fog made seeing the volcano negligible. It was not Mike's fault, we just drew a bad day on our cruise schedule. there was nothing anyone could do.
We took the Volcano and rainbow falls tour with Auntie Karen. She was amazing - full of information and fun stories. I would highly recommend her tour.
Karen, our tour guide with tour group, Green Travel and Tour, (a family owned tour group), was an amazing story teller! She gave us all an excellent definition of all the island folklore and gave us stops at all the right destinations! She also has a wonderful life story of living on the island for 40 years. I especially liked that we had only 9 of us for the day, another big plus! I highly recommend booking this tour! Every stop was beautiful, amazing and even more meaningful because of Karens' insight to each stop!
Our driver, Mike, was so knowledgeable! He took us around Hilo; black sand beach, farmer’s market, King Kamahema statue, drove by Queen Liliuokani park, which was beautiful, and then to Rainbow Falls. Beautiful day to enjoy the falls and see rainbows. Be sure and don’t miss the optical illusion. Volcanoes National Park was fascinating and amazing! Beautiful day for viewing even though no volcanic activity other than smoke! Mike embodied the spirit of Hawaii. Kind, thoughtful, looking out for others at every turn. Viator hires great guides here! Thank you Mike and kudos Viator.
Karen was a wonderful tour guide & very knowledgeable about the island & culture. Viator does a great job
Great Day!! Mike was our guide. He was very knowledgeable.. He knew of all the great places to view volcano park. So much to see on the way rmthere and back .. dole whip..bananas and more. Just like traveling wirh a friend. GREEN TRAVEL
The visitor center is closed due to construction. Our driver did not narrate very much. The rainbow falls was beautiful, through congested at the time of day we stopped. The Volcano National park was as expected. The stops were good, but the walk through the desolation area was a bit longer than I expected. The lava tube was in a lush and tropical area, it was a bit crowded. The extra stops at the farmers market, sandwich shop for lunch to carry to the NP and the specialty candy store were added perks.
Excellent guided tour through a little bit of Hilo to the black sands beach and Rainbow Falls, out to the Volcano National Park, and down to the Thurston lava tube. We had Auntie Karen (yes, that was really her name) who gave us an excellent tour. She added some personal touches and related some personal history that helped keep us entertained on the way and back.
Fun get to see a lot of different areas, lots of good information. Driver was interactive and very knowledgeable.
So much fun! We were in a small group, 6 of us, so much better than 50 people being herded around. Our tour guide Marissa was a wealth of local info and a great storyteller. We had lunch at a local plate lunch restaurant, so good! The black sand beaches, craters, and lava tubes were amazing. We had a blast!
We lucked out with only six of us on this tour! Talk about a good time, our guide Marissa showed us the best of Hilo, seeing the volcano crater, lava tubes, rainbow falls and so much more. It was a fun day and Marissa made it entertaining and fun.
Aunty Karen was a great guide. Very fun and full of interesting information. She was very knowledgeable.
This is was an excellent tour to Volcano National Park, Rainbow waterfalls, and a lava tube. The tour guide, Auntie Karen, is a great storyteller, provided excellent information, and entertained the group. She gave us an appreciation of this amazing area.
We had an amazing time. Our instructor was very informative and we had many stops along the way. I recommend this to anyone who loves to see and learn about Volcanoes
Awesome tour. Mike was a great guide, Wendal was a great driver. We saw many nice places like Rainbow falls, King Kamehameha statue, Hilo black sand beach. The volcano national park was very nice, we went to different lookouts.
Marisa was amazing. She knew so much about the area and was very warm and friendly. We had a great time! Thankyou Marisa
Very good experience. We picked up from the hotel and merissa was a fantastic tour guide and she was very knowledgeable. Enjoyed the trip. Highly recommended
Mike was a terrific tour guide, driving us and showing us on Christmas Day and leading the group in such a kind and informative manner. Wendell was a wonderful tour guide as well! Thank you so much for your kindness and stories, you made the day truly enjoyable!
It was great to see the volcano and walk through the lava tube and Rainbow falls was great too. Auntie Karen was friendly with lots of stories to tell along the way.
Karen is such a knowledgeable and personable tour guide. She provided a really fantastic experience full of stories and history! Some of the sites are closed on Sundays like the cookie and macadamia nut factories, so be aware when you’re booking :)
