Get the most out of your visit to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, a World UNESCO Heritage Site. To see most of the major sites in HVNP takes 3 hours. You will see: calderas, pit craters, lava trees, lava river, fissures, splatter ramparts, steam vents, lava tube and more. If you would prefer to see less of the Park and visit other stops along the way to the Park you are welcome to do so.

Great trip, very informative and got to see so many ares of the park. Van was very nice and comfortable and had video to provide a lot of great info on way up to the park. Photos another great perk! Highly recommend
Although it rained the entire experience our guide was very informative about the park. It would have been nice if he would have talked more and shown less videos however. We drove by the lava tube but were told we would see it on the way back. This never happened. When questioned when we were going to see it Rob said we were out of time! He also told us we were allowed to take the black ash balls and gave us a few to take. They were confiscated when getting back on the ship. We were told then that nothing could be taken out of the park! Looking it up later we found out it is a federal offense to remove anything from the park and we could have received hefty fines!!
We had an amazing experience with Big Island VIP on a single-day inter-island trip to Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park. Our private guide, Rob, was knowledgeable, fun, and made the day incredibly engaging—especially for our 13-year-old. The tour was fully customized for our family and included exploring lava fields, learning about the volcanoes, and even watching a volcano documentary on the van’s video screen between stops. Water and snacks were provided, which was a great touch. We missed the most recent eruption by less than 24 hours (sigh!) but Rob sent photos and videos of it to us which was super nice! A fantastic, educational experience and a highlight of our trip. Highly recommend! 🌋

We enjoyed the Ultimate Hilo Volcano Tour with Rob. He met us on the pier at 8 am. We beat the crowds by starting early. Very informative videos in the van on the way up to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. We parked at Volcano House and viewed the eruption that began the night before our arrival. After viewing the eruption, we saw a lava tube in the rain forest, craters, fissures and lava flows. While out on Chain of Craters Road, Rob noticed increased activity back at Kilauea. We returned for lunch at Volcano House to see a lava fountain 600-1000 feet high. It was a once in a lifetime experience! Rob showed us a wonderful and informative day. Before our return to the cruise ship, we saw Rainbow Falls and a black sand beach. Also, Rob took many pictures all day and provided a free upload for us.
We travelled as a family of ten on the Pride of America cruise. We booked this private tour wanting a more personal experience. The entire day from start to finish was fabulous. Skylar was great, very knowledgeable, professional and friendly. He made sure that the entire family had enough time to enjoy the sites, and timed everything perfectly to ensure we made it back to port on time. Highly, highly, recommend.

Our trip to Hawaii was a gift to celebrate many different events all at once (wedding anniversary, graduation from college, 30th and 60th birthdays), so we wanted to make every day special. Touring with Big Island VIP definitely made our day in Hilo and Volcanoes National Park extremely special. The four of us were cruising on the NCL Pride of America and had one day in Hilo, and we wanted to make the most of our time at the Park. We were originally going to rent a car and try to see the park on our own, but decided that we would be able to learn more with a guide. Rob picked us up at the pier early, and we were able to beat the crowds to the main tour spots, as well as go to locations in the park that not many people get to see. There is so much to see and do in the park, and we definitely appreciated Rob taking us to so many wonderful places. My husband was especially fascinated and had a wonderful dialogue with Rob about everything we saw throughout the entire day. The tour is enhanced by videos in the van explaining what we were about to see - the history of the volcanoes, the different types of lava, and the various eruptions that have occurred over the years. Rob is an encyclopedia of information, and it is evident how much he loves the island and sharing it with people. A bonus was that pictures were taken throughout the day, and shared with us after the tour. We all had a wonderful day (and had an equally wonderful day in Kona, for we booked a tour with Rob the next day as well)!
Jodi was amazing! The tour was informative and fun. She made our group feel like part of her family. We were thrilled that she took so many pictures and gave us the digital copies. We had a group of 8 that one of our members put together based on Jodi’s suggestion of how to get others on the tour. Totally worth the cost we paid. I highly recommend Jodi and her company.
Very happy that we booked this tour! Skylar picked our group of 10 up on time and was well-prepared with rain gear, flashlights, water, and snacks. He took photos throughout the day for our group so we could just ralax and take in the sights. We had a tour around Hilo and saw some of the well-known landmarks, parks, and waterfalls before driving up to Volcanoes National Park. Everything was well-organized and very informative. Getting a first hand account of the history and culture of the area, information about native plants and animals, and of course about volcanoes made our trip so memorable. There is some much to say about the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park tour, let me sum it up by saying you absolutely do not want to miss it! To do it right I highly recommend Big Island VIP Tours! The booking experience was super easy and it is where the amazing customer service began for me, when I booked the tour I selected the wrong date, Rob noticed the conflict in my comments and the date I selected and called me to verify the date I would be in Hilo. I was so grateful for his attention to detail on every aspect of the experience or we would have completely missed the tour. Let me talk a little about Rob, our guide for the tour. Communication was great, he checked on us throughout the day of the tour to verify when the ship would be arriving, what time we planned to get off the ship and as we exited the terminal he was right there with that easy to spot Mercedes Sprinter Van. It was raining hard as we exited the terminal, he spotted us and pulled as closely as possible and jumped out with an umbrella to walk us to the van. He was always there two anticipate every possible need throughout the day and made the entire day a huge success. But it went even further, he also gave us a plan for our next day in Kona, we were undecided on what we were going to do but his recommendations were amazing for Kona as well. During the tour Rob provided great information on everything from the lava flows, to the different lava activities from eruptions over the years. While we saw many large tour groups in the park, they never were where we went, we were able to get to things they just could not do with a bus load of people. We walked out on lava fields to see the different types of lava and scenery throughout the park. The day after the tour we received a link to all the pictures Rob took during our visit, his experience and knowledge enabled us to see the best sights and learn the history of the different volcanic activities over the years. Drinks and snacks were available throughout the day and Rob even knows where the best restrooms are located! Amazing day and the high point of our trip.
This was by far our favorite day. Even though the weather was not cooperating Rob and Jodi found a way to make it work. We all loved the tour and Rob accommodated all of our requests (even stopping at Target on the way back to the ship for a curling iron purchase). You won't see that on all your excursions! That's why it pays to go private. It was very comfortable in the van and everything was provided and we did need umbrellas for part of the day. My only regret is that they are not available on all the islands! I've never had such great communication on any trip. So don't hesitate to book them if you get a chance.

After having our cruise line excursion canceled, we decided to find a private tour. A quick Google search provided Big Island VIP.com. Jodi provided a private tour in an 11-passenger van just for our group of 6. The tour runs 8 am to 2 pm and the price includes her photography. We had a full day and saw many things that most tours and people just drive by. She has an extensive knowledge of Hilo and Volcano National Park. She tailors the tour to the interest/needs of her clients. This is one of the very best tours we have ever been on. BigIslandVIP.com is highly recommended. We will be back!
Jodi was just a superb guide. My family and I had a great experience and my kids (son-9 and daughter-12) learned so much about the volcanoes. Service was great and it was so fun spending the day with Jodi. The pictures were a bonus too. Highly recommended.
Rob picked us up on our “Hilo day” from the cruise port. My dad’s limited mobility let us to choose a private tour and we so appreciated Rob’s accommodation of his limitations and our desire to hike; we had it all! Rob was knowledgeable of the Volcano Park and showed video as we drove of the big eruptions last year. He was also full of great advice for our 2nd day on Hawaii, on the Kona side. The van was spacious and TALL, a great ride.
