This is a great tour if you want to get out into the back country away from all the tourists. The guide was excellent and went out of his way to ensure you were enjoying the hike, while ensuring your safety. This tour is well worth the price and if we ever return to Kauai we would book this again.

We had a great time with Da Hawaiian Dundee. Despite the rainy weather, we were able to repel down a mountainside and hike to a waterfall. We got eaten alive by mosquitoes even though we tried two different bug sprays so we opted to wipe mud all over us which did hold the mosquitoes at bay and gave us great memories. This is a one of a kind, true Hawaiian adventure. We highly recommend for those looking for something non touristy.
If you really want a private jungle/waterfall experience book with Charlie. I would rate him a bazillion stars. He was funny and informative. He also helps rescue dogs of the island. Charlie has so much experience that he has been on a few rescue missions on the island. He gave us an experience we would never forget. I would book Charlie again.
It was AMAZING!! It was so unreal. The views were breathe taking. Charlie was fantastic. A must do!! Be ready to hike, get wet & be blown away. We felt like we were in the heart of Kauai. We did not see another soul throughout the whole adventure. It was truly the highlight of our trip. We would give it more stars if we could. Charlie was patient and real. A true Hawaiian Dundee. Thank you Charlie!! 1 suggestion...wear the correct shoes.
Such a great experience with Charlie! We had a wonderful time on our jungle hike which included waterfalls, intermediate level hiking and a fun trek through part of the river. Charlie was so knowledgeable about the Kauaiian jungle and had different hikes to choose from. Was our son’s favorite excursion while on the island!
We had the pleasure and true privilege for Charlie to guide us up to the rock face of Pu’u Konanae. We’ve hiked with Charlie before and he asked us if we wanted to go on door 1.5 (if you go with him you’ll understand the door rated system) and we wouldn’t turn down an opportunity for a new adventure. The hike took a few hours navigating interior Hawaiian lands used as hunting and dirtbiking paths. His knowledge, humor and good vibes carried us up through the canopies to views looking south and eastward. We ended with a cool dip in a river we crossed on the way in, and a quick drive back out of the land. I’ve been coming to Kauai for 17 years, and only came across Charlie’s hikes in the last few years. They are the most social hikes I’ve ever done here—the interior is the last bit of untouched Kauai, and Charlie’s knowledge of its histories is worth the experience alone. Don’t hesitate, get some good bug repellant, long pants, and go.
We absolutely loved our experience. The terrain was breathtaking and we felt like we were in a primeval world. It was us immersed in nature on a genuine adventure. My group described it as one of the best things we had ever done in our lives. Charlie did a great job training us on rappelling technique and safety (some of us had never done it before) and was super friendly and knowledgeable. It felt like you were on a hike with your favorite uncle or grandfather. Recent rains had made the trails generally pretty muddy. Prepare to get thoroughly wet and dirty. While relatively short, the hike out of the valley can be challenging with many stream crossings and a steep climb out. Pace yourself and watch your footing. Overall, this was a magical experience that was good for the soul. We would highly recommend doing this adventure if you want to be away from crowded tourist activities and desire to have a one-of-a-kind adventure deep in a beautiful and pristine landscape.
Great trip!!! We had a lot of fun, Hawaiian Dundee was a cool guy. We loved swimming at the waterfall and crossing the creeks! Will definitely remember this experience.
Charlie was very experienced and was very safety conscious. It was an incredible day and included everything adventurous that we wanted. He worked with us on the level of a activity which we could do and wanted to do. Thank you, Charlie for giving us such a fun adventure!
My wife and I booked a tour with Charlie and had an amazing time. It was our first time rapelling and we loved being able to explore this hidden gem in Kauai. It was really nice to be on our own private tour which felt like you were hiking with a local and not on a tourist attraction. Charlie was a great guide, and this was definitely a highlight of our trip.
From the minute we met at check-in, we all knew that we were going to have a great time. We discussed the customized tour at length before we started and we all agreed on the days itinerary, which was built around all of our abilities and skill levels - including our 14-yr old. All day, we were challenged, made to laugh and learned about nature and Hawaiian culture. We hiked, saw waterfalls, used ropes, ate fruit, climbed and laughed. A fantastic day!!! Will we be back - YES, for a different adventure.
Our family loved this experience & will do another adventure with the Hawaiian Dundee when we return to Kauai! Both of my boys loved rappelling down the falls, jumping off the cliffs & swimming in the pool. The views are spectacular & exploring the jungle is something my family will never forget. Mahalo for making this experience possible & so memorable.
Thank you Charlie! You made our first day in Hawaii. Your tour was the best way to start our vacation. Even if it will be hard to top the day with you, we are forever grateful for everything you showed us and let us do 🤩💪😂🤙❤️ We met as strangers, we became friends in djungel and we left you as Ohana. In our hearts. 🫶 Thanks for a magical tour and all the pics and the great stories you shared. Love Tarzan and Jane - Dundee 4ever
We don’t leave reviews often, mainly because people can be so emotional biased on a bad day, something that triggered them, or perhaps just woke up angry that day and in the end just sets people in the wrong direction….. but this trip was one for the books. Charlie is legitimately the most humble, authentic, and genuine guide we’ve ever had the pleasure to hang with. Words can’t state how incredible of a time our family had. We learned about the culture, respect for the island, his overall passion for nature and in the end, walked away with an appreciation not only for the scenery but also of the history of such a beautiful place. The views were incredible and the company was unforgettable. Charlie, we will always cherish the time we spent with you, and will remember this trip as one of the best times we’ve had as a family in all our travels. Mahalo and I hope we get to see you again one day.
We thoroughly enjoyed our tour with Dundee Charlie! To be clear, this is a VERY PHYSICAL tour through the Hawaiian jungle. Charlie will change up the tour according to the physical level of the group BUT this is not for those that are not physically capable to climb, traverse, jump, walk through small streams, etc. We had a fantastic time and would do it again 😀 Thanks Dundee Charlie!
Chris described his tour as an adventure and not an activity. We 100% agree. We had an amazing time admiring the gorgeous views and hearing some history along the way. We felt extremely privileged that we were allowed to visit such an exclusive area. Truly a one of a kind experience!
This was an experience we will never forget! Charlie was so knowledgeable, fun and we learned a lot along the way. The views were amazing and although it was challenging, it was a one of a kind, once in a lifetime adventure. We were truly deep in the jungle and the waterfall was gorgeous! So cold and refreshing too! We jumped from the falls for even more fun. You haven’t seen Kauai until you’ve seen it this way! We highly recommend Charlie and his jungle tour!!
Outstanding job providing information and tailoring the hiking, climbing and rappelling to the group. Would do this adventure each time we come back, which we have.
her trip with Charlie was fantastic. It was an unbelievable adventure something we never expected. He was patient and kind and a great guide.. we highly recommend this trip and would do it again if we had time this trip.
Perfect day. Perfect guide. Perfect weather. Charlie took us to a private reserve and taught us so much about the island and wildlife on Kaua’i. He has 4 different trails to take depending on your ability level. We did trail 3. We repelled down into a canyon and stopped at a beautiful waterfall. I would not say it was excessively challenging from a cardiovascular standpoint, but the terrain is very uneven and slippery. If balance is a challenge for you this may not be your activity. The trip back up the canyon definitely got your heart racing, but if you have a moderate fitness level it should not be a problem. Pack on the bug spray because there are a lot of mosquitoes. Long pants and long sleeves work well as long as they are quick to dry. You will get wet. I have never repelled before, but Charlie made sure we knew what we were doing. He kept us safe the whole way, and we had a great time. I would definitely recommend this tour.
This was the first time I had ever rappelled, and my husband hadn’t rappelled since his teens. Charlie was very patient and kind. He explained the process so well and we loved how he taught us about all the wildlife, plant life, and culture along the way. This was an incredible opportunity to see and experience some things we would have missed on a typical tourist hike. With all the rain during our hike, the terrain was definitely challenging, but it was worth it! We have another new favorite memory and great story to share with our family. Mahalo!
Charlie was very knowledgeable about area, and all techniques for the area and an amazing experience we had. Beautiful views ,amazing experience. We highly recommend the tour and will definitely come back for tour #4. We had tour #3 and was soooooooo fun. Thanks Charlie
It was a crazy experience, Charlie was a great tour guide and showed us the whole jungle along with his awesome personality.
Charlie was awesome! Friendly, knowledgeable and an overall bada**. We got to see hike beautiful forest, jump off a waterfall and learn to rappel and ascend! We’ll return for another of his tours next time we are in Kauai!
Charlie is a phenomenal guide and provided a unique rappelling and jungle tour experience. We would highly recommend him.
Amazing tour. Words cannot describe the value provided here- Dundee is amazing. Unbelievable day! First of all, the tour is personalized to your group. We were shown rappelling safety and chose to rappel down a ravine, followed by a hike through the jungle to a private waterfall with swimming and jumping areas. We saw not a single other person- because Dundee has access to locked and gated, restricted land. Our tour was over 6 hours and in addition to rappelling, we crossed 2 streams going to the waterfall and 6/7 streams coming back. We’ve done all the tours here- ziplining, kayaking, tubing, hike to waterfalls, etc., this is by far the best tour and the best value. Not only that, you get to meet a truly genuine person that makes your tour come alive. He has different tours for different levels of fitness and ability. We’ll definitely do another tour when we come back!
This was a fantastic experience with access that you cannot get anywhere else. Tourist free experience that was both challenging and rewarding. Would highly recommend, but come ready!
We loved our day out with Charlie and it was a highlight of our trip. We all love hiking and he brought us to places that no guidebook or app will show you. It is a well rounded excursion with some repelling, hiking and swimming in a waterfall pool, which was delightful and refreshing.
This adventure was a highlight of our trip to Hawaii! It was authentic, fun and not another human being in site for the 3+ hours that we were in the jungle with Charlie! In such a touristy state like Hawaii this is a rarity! We hiked through the remote jungle, repelled down a 200 ft ravine into the canyon below where we swam and jumped into a refreshing pool of water with a beautiful waterfall! This was an adventure that we will never forget! I can't recommend this activity enough! Charlie was thoughtful, kind, knowledgeable and led us on a safe and fun adventure!
Charlie was amazing! He is very knowledgeable and kind. He told us he has been a park ranger, served in the army, and rescued people (was on the news for that). The experience itself also exceeded our expectations. He drove us to a native land, where we did rope rappelling, and was able to enjoy a natural waterfall. The only downside is that there were a lot of mosquitos, so wear long sleeves and maybe also a head net :)
Amazing tour! We were able to see a different side of Kauai we had yet to see. Charlie is a wonderful guide, he is very insightful, very encouraging and most importantly very fun. You can see how much love he has for the island, the wildlife and his guests. He goes above and beyond to make sure you have fun, learn exciting new things but above all, feel safe. This was the highlight of our trip for everyone in my family.
It was just my husband and I on this adventure. We intend on bringing our kids next time....maybe. We may keep it for just us adults. 😝😜 Either way Charlie is going to make sure we have a good time and everyone is safe doing it. He has multiple trails available depending on the adventure you are after. We went on a tour full of information and tasty treasures that were ripe along the way. Charlie led us to a private waterfall where we swam and had fun, and then he led us and 'left us' (close but not, ya know) at a waterfall hot tub, just us, middle of the jungle. Charlie is a Man of his Land and knows it's history, he cares for and respects the land and the animals that inhabit it. We ended our day with Charlie where he stopped to feed a rescue dog and then to get Poi for himself(homemade and DELISH, roadside stand) I was smart enough to jump on that and got a bag for ourselves. That with the Safeway Poke he recommend, my favorite dinner of the trip. No joke. Simple, healthy and delish. It was our favorite day of our 10 day trip. I highly recommend trusting Charlie to give you an experience you will never forget.
This experience is worth it!!! We had an amazing time. We learned a lot and the view was amazing. Swimming in the lagoon was everything. Where else can you go and have a private swim.❤️😊
We so enjoyed this adventure. We were surprised at every turn by the beauty and abundance of this wild Hawaii landscape. We enjoyed Lemon, strawberry, and grapefruit, guava fresh from the trees. The excursion we chose pushed us physically, but fed us spiritually. Our guide Charlie shared the culture and history of the Hawaiian and Polynesian peoples. We would strongly recommend this adventure for anyone that desires something other than the typical tourist experience.
My daughter (16 years old) and I went on a jungle adventure with Charlie, the Hawaiian Dundee, and would definitely do it again. Charlie is a kind and caring man with years of experience taking people on his adventures. Charlie only takes your group for the day, so he can tailor the adventure to what you want to do. This is a "no frills" but amazing experience. Here are some tips for future adventurers and what we experienced during our day with Charlie: -What to wear: light-weight hiking pants and a long sleeve shirt with a swimsuit or other light-weight shirt underneath; shoes you can hike in and do not care if they get wet and muddy; socks that are not cotton. My daughter and I wore swim suit bottoms and tank tops under our pants and long-sleeve shirts. We took off our long-sleeve shirts after we were done swimming in the pool at the waterfall and kept them off for the rest of the hike. BUT be sure to take insect repellent. I would not have kept my long-sleeve shirt off if I did not have insect repellent because of the mosquitoes. We wore running shoes and hiking socks that were not cotton. You will cross several streams so your feet (and calves, at least) will get wet. I do not think hiking boots are necessary but I would not wear hiking sandals because of the terrain. My running shoes were fine but I am glad I wore an older pair so I didn't care how wet and muddy they were at the end of the day. -What else to take: a light-weight water bottle (not metal) or hydration pack, food/snacks, sunscreen, and insect repellent. We were planning on taking our metal water bottles but Charlie suggested that we not because of the weight. He gave us a few bottles of water that we could pack, which worked fine. If you take a hydration pack, be sure to not pack anything in it that you don't want to get wet, potentially. We took a backpack for our food, which we then put inside a dry sack that Charlie provided to make sure everything stayed dry if we fell while crossing streams. -You meet Charlie at his house where he teaches you how to rappel because you will rappel 200 ft into a canyon as part of the adventure (the one we did - I think Charlie has options where you do not have to rappel...). -Once you are ready, you ride with Charlie to the starting point. This is where you will first meet Shadow, a dog that Charlie is trying to rescue from the jungle. Shadow stayed with us the entire day and is the sweetest dog. I hope Charlie is able to rescue her soon. -You start the adventure by hiking through the jungle a bit to where you will rappel into a canyon. There are amazing views along the beginning of the route. -After you rappel, Charlie guides you through the jungle to a waterfall and pool where you can swim (in the clothes and shoes you are wearing, so, again, be sure to wear light-weight clothes that you don't care get wet and dry quickly). You have a snack/lunch at the waterfall, and then you can climb by the waterfall and jump into the pool. Charlie has ropes to help you climb, as well as rappel next to the water fall, if you don't want to jump into the pool. He has helmets and life jackets available, as well. -After playing at the pool for a while, Charlie guides you back out of the canyon and back to his jeep. You are in the canyon for a while so there are not views but you hike next to a stream for a while and are able to experience the "rain forest of Kauai." -All along the way, Charlie shares some of the history of Kauai, points out native plants vs. "alien" plants, lets you taste fruit that is in season, gives you an awapuhi "salon treatment" for your hair at the pool, and is the most pleasant guide. -There were definitely sections that had a steep incline climbing out of the canyon but those sections were relatively short and Charlie stops to take breaks. We did cross several streams, one of which has a rope that you can hold onto for when the water is higher and faster. We went at the end of August, so the water was not too high and the streams were easy to cross. -Charlie guides you back out of the canyon and back to his jeep, where the jungle adventure ends. -Charlie mentioned that the total hike is only 1.5 nautical miles - I forgot to ask him how many land miles we hiked. :) -I suggest taking shoes/sandals to change into once you are back to Charlie's jeep as well as clothes you can change into before you get back into your rental car, although we were relatively dry by the time we got back to our rental car. -You end your adventure by riding with Charlie back to his house. -I tried to upload photos to share my daughter rappelling next to the waterfall but my photos would not upload. My daughter and I had an amazing day with Charlie and Shadow. Charlie is a great guide and is very pleasant and kind. I agree with other reviewers that, for the hike we did with Charlie (he has four options for his guided adventures), you need to have relatively good fitness and be willing to hike through mud and water. There are no "posh amenities" on this hiking adventure but it gives you a feel for authentic Kauai and we loved it. I am planning on going on another jungle adventure with Charlie if we visit Kauai again - maybe we will do the option where Charlie takes us rappelling down several waterfalls. Charlie mentioned that he also does jeep tours, so if you want to skip the hiking jungle adventure, you could consider spending a day with Charlie touring in his jeep. Charlie is a lovely person with a kind heart and I hope to spend a day with him again in the future. Mahalo Charlie!
Our day with the Hawaiian Dundee was one of the best and most memorable time on our trips to Hawaii. Not only was he extremely knowledgeable, but he is a genuinely good person. He was a real pleasure to talk with, and the experience could not have been better. My teenage sons and I will be talking about the adventure for a long time to come!
By far the highlight of our trip! Charlie is amazing, the hike, repel, climb, jump, swim, and waterfall were more than promised. If you're thinking about this, do it. It's truly an amazing way to experience real Kauai. Thanks Charlie & we hope you enjoy your new Jeep Mojave - Matt & Amber
Charlie Dundee was extremely experienced and knowledgeable. He customized the tour to our skill level and what we wanted to experience. It was my family of four, including two younger boys. This was just the right challenge/adventure for us. We were out in the Hawaiian jungle alone. There were no other tour groups or people out there. We saw and crossed waterfalls, walked through forest, swam in natural pools and walked through creeks. This was a once in a lifetime experience and one of the highlights of our trip to Kauai. Mahalo Charlie! You da man!
What a unique and incredible experience!! It felt like we were the only ones in the jungle! Hawaii Dundee Charlie is incredibly knowledgeable about Hawaiian history and of course the local flora and fauna. Lots and adventurous fun!
Walking through the water most memorable because it was so refreshing! We did the easiest trail, Dundee calls this Door #1, 9/10 mile, and still was enough of a challenge for two 65 year olds.
The Hawaiian Dundee did a remarkable job, teaching us, keeping us safe, and opening our eyes to the real, and beautiful Kauai. He has a compassionate heart for nature and animals, and I have so much respect for his dog rescue efforts. To have seen the spectacular waterfall and immerse ourselves in the pool will be an unforgettable experience for all of us. He made us feel capable and safe throughout the entire tour. I am grateful to have met him and so happy with our experience. Thank you!!!
My family and I truly enjoyed this unique, private adventure! Dundee (aka Charlie) takes time to ensure everyone in the group understands and is comfortable with the repelling and ascending equipment and has the correct apparel for the trip. If you have a sense of adventure and are looking for something different than the run of the mill tourist experiences then this trip is for you! The bonus is you get to meet Shadow, the sweet yet shy doggie who keeps a close eye on you the entire way and makes sure no one wanders off the path. The vistas cannot be beat and not found on any other trip. Tour includes a refreshing swim in a waterfall with optional cliff jumping! We can’t wait to come back and do Dundee’s other adventures for returning customers! Some tips: Lightweight pants are a MUST and I definitely recommend long sleeve sun shirt and neck gaiter and hat. The mosquitos are NO JOKE and the proper clothing works better than repellant. Waterproof hiking boots would be better than the Keen hiking sandals we had but if that’s all you have, they’re better than sneakers. Helps to be in reasonably good shape, this is of course, a tour through the wild with limited cell service.
Charlie is a great guide and person! We loved experiencing Kauai in its most natural state and through a local’s point of view. Swimming and jumping off the waterfall were definitely highlights. We also enjoyed getting a taste of repelling and ascending. Charlie, your love of and care for animals is unparalleled. Wishing the best for you and all the ones you care for! (Worth noting—if mosquitos love you (and they love me), wear long sleeves and pants and heavy duty repellant while on the tour. You will also want to reapply it while on the tour.)
This was an exciting hike through the Kauai jungle with an amazing guide, Charlie 'Da Hawaiian Dundee'. He is so knowledgeable and engaging with his stories and keeps you looking forward to the next interesting thing he might tell you about or show you. The hike itself is an adventure! Definitely wear long pants, long sleeved shirts, and closed toed shoes. Make sure you have bug spray on before you repel down to the bottom of the canyon... that's where the mosquito swarms are. Our family loved this hike and adventure with Charlie and Shadow! Charlie - if you're still doing these tours on our next visit, you'll be seeing us again. Thank you so much for making this such a memorable time for us all. This will be something we talk about for years and years to come. WooHoo and Mahalo nui loa!
Charlie had amazing communication before our hike. He’s fully prepared and knowledgeable to bring you into the private trails and see hidden gems no one else could show you. We even were the first to encounter a few hunting dogs during our excursion!! Be sure to dress appropriate for backwoods hiking trails and I promise……. you will have memories to last a lifetime!!
Charlie was AWESOME! I have never repelled 1 foot let alone 20 stories and it was amazing! Shadow, a dog he is working on trust with to rescue from the jungle stayed with us the entire trip! Bring her snacks! Long fast dry pants, long sleeve quick dry shirt and socks and tennis shoes is all you need. Oh and bug spray which I should have applied. We did top notch excursions on our honeymoon but none were as special and rewarding. Must do!!!! Five 🌟 is just not enough for this experience! Thank you Hawaiian Dundee! Thank you Shadow for staying in back and on the lookout for everyone. One special dog!
What a perfect day rappelling, hiking and swimming in a beautiful area that we would have never seen had it not been for Hawaiian Dundee Charlie. He guided us safely through our first rappelling adventure, a jungle hike, and a swim to revive our mana. This man is an amazing human being. Hang out with him for an afternoon and he’ll entertain you, educate you, and leave you with a feeling of immense gratitude for the land and the people of Hawaii.
Amazing experience with “The Hawaiian Dundee”! He is such a caring, professional guide. He provides a personalized experience tailored to the needs of your group. I had my 67 year old mother and 14 year old son with varying ability levels. He provided exceptional guidance that allowed everyone to rappel down to the waterfall and make it back out over streams and switchbacks. He coached everyone through the tough parts and his easy going demeanor kept everyone going. He is also an awesome human being who takes care of stray dogs he’s encountered along the trail. He has three rescue dogs. He’s currently feeding another stray “Shadow,” as he works to build her trust and eventually bring her home out of the jungle. Shadow cautiously greeted us when we arrived at the start of the trail. He fed her and she followed us on our entire adventure. She was wary, but kept us company, checking on us if we fell behind. It made the experience so much more meaningful. We are hopeful that soon Shadow will allow him to bring her home. If you are looking for an epic adventure in Kauai, this is the one!
This was the best experience my husband and I booked in Kauai, hands down. Da Hawaiian Dundee treated us like family and made us feel super comfortable. We learned so much and gained more confidence in ourselves in the water. We also got the privilege to hike with a shy dog named Shadow who I now love very much!! If you want something to do, this is well worth the money. We will 100% be coming back to Kauai and booking with him again! We loved it so much and would recommended it to anyone we know. We felt very safe with him and had a blast!
Charlie is outstanding. He gave us first rate instruction, filled us with lots of local knowledge, provided a tour we could never find on our own and gave us memories to last a lifetime. If you’re up for an adventure off the normal beaten path, this trip is for you. We learned repelling, ascending and jumped from a waterfall in one beautiful and glorious day. Charlie is just a quality human being to wrap it up. And I can’t forget Shadow who kept watch over us. All in all it was fantastic. Thank you!!!
