The self-guided tour was great. Leaving 4 starts instead of five only because we couldn’t complete the tour due to road closure from the hurricane.

Itinerary
Be sure to check out the Kauai Coffee’s visitor center. They offer free coffee samples in a large variety of flavors, what a great way to start off your morning!
Visit this once an impressive fort, with 20 feet high and 17 feet wide walls that shaped like a star Pāʻulaʻula State Historic Site, formerly known as Russian Fort Elizabeth, preserves a fascinating chapter of Kauaʻi’s history. The site is currently closed for construction, but you’ll hear its story and significance as you pass the area on the tour.
Here in Waimea Town, there are some local places to shop and eat. Stop by if you need a quick snack for the road, but other than that we suggest you skip this spot for now and save it for your return trip. We’ll guide you back, we promise!
If you’ve been to Hawaii, you’ve probably seen a few waterfalls, but this waterfall is particularly unique. It runs through Kauai’s red dirt instead of lush green jungle which is what you normally see. Stop by for a quick picture and then continue into the park.
While you're on the trail, check out the interpretive signs that describe the native plants. The trail is actually named after a rare, exotic plant -- the iliau or Kaua'i greensword -- that is found nowhere else in the world but here on Kaua'i. This stop is within Waimea Canyon or Kōkeʻe State Park. Any required park entry and parking fees are paid separately directly to the park and are not included with the Shaka Guide tour.
This stop is within Waimea Canyon or Kōkeʻe State Park. Any required park entry and parking fees are paid separately directly to the park and are not included with the Shaka Guide tour. This is the first of two lookouts of Waimea Canyon. This lookout has some of the best views on a clear day. Stand atop the lookout to take in the expansive views of this natural wonder.
We’ll guide you to pull into a small parking lot for a view of an 800-foot waterfall that cascades into the canyon.
This is the second of the two lookouts for Waimea Canyon. Here at the end of the parking lot is the trailhead for Canyon Trail. The trail signs are a little confusing, so read the description under Hiking in our app Highlights before hiking. Puʻu Hinahina offers expansive views of Waimea Canyon and the surrounding landscape. The Puʻu Hinahina parking lot is currently closed, so do not stop unless official signage indicates safe, legal access. If access is unavailable, continue along the tour route to the next viewpoint.
Here is our first major hike for the day! The trail starts at the parking lot, and you’ll travel about ¾ of a mile through lush jungle to a spot called Cliff Viewpoint. This stop is within Waimea Canyon or Kōkeʻe State Park. Any required park entry and parking fees are paid separately directly to the park and are not included with the Shaka Guide tour.
The lodge and museum at Koke'e are located at a small plateau in the mountain. The lodge is a sit-down restaurant with decent food if you are hungry. If you are lucky, sometimes they have live music! At the museum, there is a display of native plants, animals, and birds.
Here you will find your first view of the glorious Na Pali Coast. However, don’t be upset if dense fog prevents you from seeing any views. It’s typical at this altitude. Try waiting it out a few minutes as the fog tends to come and go in waves. This stop is within Waimea Canyon or Kōkeʻe State Park. Any required park entry and parking fees are paid separately directly to the park and are not included with the Shaka Guide tour.
From this lookout, you get a view of the iconic Na Pali coast. You can also see the peak of Mt. Wai’ale’ale and a swamp called Alaka’i Swamp - one of the wettest places on the entire planet with about 450 inches of rain a year.
Their shave ice comes in a wide range of tropical and traditional flavors. We recommend getting one of their combos with vanilla or macadamia nut ice cream. Their small size is plenty big enough to share.
At the base of the mountain, just past the old swinging bridge is a hidden gem that reveals a fascinating part of Kauai's past: the Menehune Ditch. You might be thinking to yourself, what’s so cool about a ditch? Well, we’ll tell you the story of the Menehune who constructed this ditch thousands of years ago.
In 1778, Captain Cook became the first Westerner to discover Hawaii. The place where Cook first set foot in Hawai'i is right here in Waimea. We'll point out his statue in the middle of town.
Here in Hanapepe, there are a few quaint art boutiques, restaurants, murals, and an interesting little bookstore called Talk Story. In fact, it’s the westernmost bookstore in the United States! Feel free to stop anytime as we do a quick drive through the town.
If you’re interested in checking out a cool swinging bridge, there's one in Hanapepe. Look for the sign when you're walking around town.
Hanapepe is only a few minutes from Lawai, where you started the tour. We’ll guide you back in that direction with a fun story about Kauai's "state bird" along the way.

Because of the hurricane all the roads was closed so I didn’t get to fully experience the tour. The tour might’ve been a good tour, but I wouldn’t know.
Very informative and entertaining.stayed with us accurately along the route to end of road and back.
Not very difficult to Navigate, unless you're Technology Challenged! Once everything is properly setup with your vehicle it was a pleasure following the tour.
This was super easy to follow once you found the right starting place. The app was easy to navigate, and the auditor was fantastic. I highly recommend it to anyone looking to explore the island of Kauai.
It started out great. Narration is really good and interesting. Unfortunately our app kept restarting from the beginning of the tour and it would catch back up but eventually it stopped updating to where we left off.
This was such a cool thing to be able to do! At my family’s own pace… without some big tour group where we felt trapped… we all loved this! Well… maybe not my 13 year old daughter but she doesn’t love much these days ;) overall though, besides the fact that the main road to the canyon was closed, we were able to enjoy the majority of the tour, get some cool stories, legends, history lessons and Hawaiian music along the way… a winner on this one for me and my family!
Good trip. Lots of traffic on Sunday. Nice weather and a beautiful drive up to the top of the Canyon and back
Very easy download with help from customer service. I loved all the information that was given along the road
The route was closed and we had to find our own way. Cell service was spotty at best. Due to being detoured we missed most of the trip. Disappointing.
This tour app made our trip so much better. The instructions were clear, the timing was perfect, and every stop felt thoughtfully planned. It took away all the guesswork and enjoyed the experience.
Beautiful and breath taking. Definitely worth it. There are a few hikes you should be prepared for with good hiking shoes and water.
We loved this experience so much! Even our teenagers loved listening to the Hawaiin stories. It helped us a lot. We also loved that it connected to our GPS and told us exactly what was coming up and where to turn. So much great information! Thank you.
Wonderful way to go at your own pace while having directions to each stop. Narration was informative and music was nice to listen to as well.
The guidance, information, and stories were helpful and gave my family a better understanding of what we were looking at on the tour. We were provided with some key tips that helped make our experience more enjoyable.
If you have taken other tours with Viator, this one will feel quite a bit different. Upon booking, you are prompted to download an app, and there are at least a dozen steps to that process. Once you are all set up, you can use the rather glitchy app to tour the western side of Kauai.. It is well curated, without a doubt, but the technology is not top notch.
The guide was fun and interesting and took us to locations we wouldn't have known about in a as standard map.
Very fun and informative narration, accurate directions, made the drive from Poipu to Waimea Canyon very enjoyable. And economical. Travelers should check ahead of time on road closure on last stretch to Na pali overlook so as not to be disappointed, as we were.
It was great once we got it working. The Shaka support person was awesome and answered right away after spending a half hour trying to get it to start while on the way to Waimea. It was mostly my fault for not setting up an account on the Shaka app and downloading it the night before. We needed the code from TripAdvisor. Should’ve ordered directly from them. Sorry TripAdvisor since I use you often for reviews. It was fun to have stories and Hawaiian music along the way. Definitely recommend, just take the time to get it started before you leave your WIFI. Because it uses GPS it was able to start from where we were and tell us things we missed on the way back.
Make sure you download the Shaka Guide app- you need that as well as the Viator app. This was a great way to se everything at your own pace and with lots of facts and information.
The audio had a few cool tid bits of information but a lot of the stops were closed and we started our day at 10am. The canyon was beautiful but I was hoping for more spots.
This app is very helpful. Your trip is so much more fun and we learned and saw may things we would not have seen otherwise!
It was good once we figured out the app and we were at correct location to begin. Was frustrating until that point but once synced correctly and at correct starting location the app ran smoothly and was a great tour. We will try this again on Maui
The app was supposed to “turn-by-turn directions using GPS” I correctly downloaded the app and started the tour At no time did the app use GPS to correctly tell us where to turn or where we were We were told to turn left when there was no street to the left and then congratulated on making the turn We were not told to turn in Waimea and ended up taking the wrong turn that cost us about 25 minutes We manually used the app to select places that we thought we were but without a map this was difficult We manually selected the lookout at the end of the Koke’e road but the app said that the road was closed during construction- it was open In short the app ruined our day I strongly urge travel advisor members to never book a tour with Shaka Guide - they are a total fraud!
This audio tour made the drive up Waimea Canyon much more informative and I would recommend it to anyone
Follow instructions carefully for connecting at starting points. We had a little trouble at the beginning, but once connected it was great.
This is a fantastic way to see the island. Unfortunately Waimea Canyon was. Socked in with fog so we turned back. But we had fun with the beginning of the tour the history and tha Hawaiian music.
We found this to be informative and enjoyable. We’ve been to the canyon before but we’ve just ridden in silence. This made the trip go faster. We liked it so much we’ve purchased the audio for all the Hawaiian Islands.
We wanted to start the tour at the top of waimea Canyon. It seemed to start out ok but then seemed to struggle as we got down into some of the towns. I expected to have more history and stories than what was provided. It was nice having the Hawaiian music during the quiet times.
Great self guided tour! Was still able to use it in off line areas. Uncle Shaka also gave us some great historical details and stories at sites. Would recommend!
Really nice guide through the canyon. Fun narration and stories. Loved the music vibes too! Wasn’t sure how to find the ‘highlights’ section of the app which was referred to several times. Otherwise loved it! Recommend!
Once synchronized with your gps, the tour is spot on. Great if you want to see an area at your own pace and total control.
The app was great to have for a self guided tour of the canyon. It told us about points of interest and what to expect once we got there. Very helpful!!! It was super cloudy so we didn’t get to actually see the canyon, but having the app made the drive up worthwhile. The narrator was very pleasant to listen too. Our only downside-was it kept switching from our phone to the CarPlay. Kind of annoying, but didn’t take away from our enjoyment.
We really enjoyed the stories and information. It was great that the GPS triggered the stories right as we arrived. The only problems were that the estimated time at each stop was too short, so no time for food (although we did add in looking for sea turtles and monk seals at Po'ipu Beach and the Spouting Horn on the way to the Kauai Coffee farm); the Russian Fort was closed, and, more importantly, the Waimea Canyon Road is closed every day from 8 am to 4:30 pm. This meant that we had to take a long detour. Since we were not meeting the GPS trigger spots, we had to listen to the same Hawaiian song for 45 minutes straight!
i chose shaka tour because i s liked others that we used- I will say i had some growing this one which is why i have held off with a review…maybe cant blame the tour might have been my phone But several if the things were closed for renovations making them not visitable.
Make sure to download Shaka app before leaving where you are going from. Great history in the stories
A great experience overall once the audio synced up with the GPS. A minor discrepancy that worked itself out. Would totally recommend this for anyone that wants to hear about some history and recommendations for stopping points along the way at your own pace.
Loved this app! We can’t stand being part of a tour herd. This app made it easy to get around to see the highlights while proving info along the way.
Nice tour … liked the narration and stories told about history of the island… liked the way it kept up and told us where to turn .. was even updated about road closures!
The app was extremely helpful glad I used it. However the Waimea Canyon lookout was closed. It would’ve been nice to know that. Also the museum and restaurant closed at 4:00 and 3:30 would have been nice to know that. Also 2 of the recommended restrooms were closed. Otherwise it was a good informative tour.
This app definitely made the drive more interesting and entertaining. I am glad that we purchased it.
The app was good enough. Got us to where we needed to be. Not as up to date, since there is a lot of construction and many of the roads to lookout points were closed. Would have preferred more historical and environmental commentary along with the folklore. Also told us to make a left at the fire house in the town of Waimea where there was none. Did have to make several u-turns and did some of the tour backwards because of bad directions.
Had an excellent time with this self guided tour. You can opt in or out of various recommended stops or hikes and it will automatically guide you along. Lots of excellent stories and narration along the way.
Great narration, pretty accurate with up to date changes in road construction, etc. A couple items were closed that we weren’t aware of, so a bit disappointed in that.
Great for travelers who know nothing about the island! I specifically loved all the stories and legends told.
The drive is long…but worth it. Waimea Canon is breathtaking!!! Love the history shared and the wonderful music, plus how the guide cracked jokes.
We hired a car to travel to the canyon and to be honest having the turn by turn app was just what we needed. Having the history along the way really opened our eyes to how the culture of Hawaii has transformed from the past to the present and the influence of other countries.
The audio guides are terrific! They make driving so much more fun. Lots of information and suggestions for things to do.
The app was great, once we got it working correctly! I would have given it 5 stars instead of 4, because of one issue. The issue was that we needed to choose between 2 starting points to get us to Waimea, neither were near our location in Poipu - which is okay, but both options were 9 miles away in the opposite direction, and neither location stated which was the one closest to Waimea, based on our "home location". This is our first time on Kauai so we had no idea of our bearings. Because of this we drove all the way from Poipu to Lihue looking for our "start point" when we should have been instructed to choose the other start point based on GPS of our location in Poipu. After some frustration we eventually figured it out, and once we did the tour worked beautifully! The narration was fun, and the start and stop points along the route were really accurate! We would have driven by many of the stop points had we not used this app. Overall the day ended up being really positive and I would use this app again for other locations now that I understand how it works!
We love the history and stories with the narratives. We would have missed a couple of lookouts if we did the tour on our own.
