Itinerary
Start the adenture towards Hawaii Volcanoes National Park driving through the historical Banyan Drive- a tree-lined street at the shoreline of Hilo, Hawaii. It is known as the "Hilo Walk of Fame" for the banyan trees planted by celebrities. These trees have withstood several tsunamis that have devastated the town on the Big Island of Hawaii. The trees, which still bear the names of the planters, honor movie stars, religious leaders, political leaders, famous authors, adventurers and local Hawaiians. Total Drive Time to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and beyond : 1 hour
Blink and you may think you’re in Japan as you stroll through peaceful Liliʻuokalani Gardens, named after Hawaiʻi's last reigning monarch, Queen Liliʻuokalani. Located on Hilo's Banyan Drive, this authentic, 24.67-acre Japanese garden was dedicated in 1917 as a tribute to Hawaiʻi's first Japanese immigrants who worked in the island of Hawaiʻi's sugar cane fields. This beautifully landscaped park features arching bridges over fishponds, rock gardens, pagodas, Japanese stone lanterns and a teahouse. Views of Hilo Bay and Mokuola (Coconut Island) enhance this peaceful setting. With so much to see, this is a popular park for families to explore while they’re visiting the Hilo area.
Rainbow Falls is an awe-inspiring waterfall that tumbles 80 feet into the Wailuku River that gushes below. Surrounded by lush tropical rainforest, this waterfall is easily reached from downtown Hilo as itʻs just a 5-minute drive away. Known as Waiānuenue in Hawaiian language, the name translates to “rainbow [seen in] water” and is befitting for these falls, as the rising sun commonly ignites a dazzling rainbow in the mist. Visit Rainbow Falls to experience the home of Hina, the ancient Hawaiian moon goddess, that is said to live within a lava cave encapsulated behind the falls. This peaceful oasis is a fantastic place to visit in the early morning to view the falls and explore the stunning natural environment that surrounds them.
Born of Fire, Born of the Sea Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park protects some of the most unique geological, biological, and cherished cultural landscapes in the world. Extending from sea level to 13,680 feet, the park encompasses the summits of two of the world's most active volcanoes - Kīlauea and Mauna Loa - and is a designated International Biosphere Reserve and UNESCO World Heritage Site. We will then make our way to the summit of Kilauea volcano at the Volcanoes National Park, the most highly regarded and revered volcanic area on Earth. The Park highlights two of the world's most active volcanoes--Kilauea and Mauna Loa--and offers insights on the birth of the Hawaiian Islands and views of dramatic volcanic landscapes. At the park, you will stop at the Visitor Center, witness the spectacular collapsed caldera, steam vents, sulfur banks, and fascinating scenic lookouts. No trip to Hawaii is complete without a trip to Volcanoes National Park.
The Nāhuku lava tube is one of the few accessible lava tubes in the park and is considered to be the most popular destination in the park, besides the summit of Kilauea. Walking through a tall tunnel formed by a 500-year-old river of lava is an incredible and memorable experience .To think that the vacant space was once a fast-moving torrent of molten rock from Kilauea volcano can be hard to fathom. Equally astonishing is that Nahuku is accessed by a gorgeous, easy trail surrounded (by a) verdant native rainforest. Towering tree ferns, ohia trees, and rare Hawaiian plants thrive where this massive flow once dominated the landscape.

We had a wonderful time. The scenery was fabulous. The Rainbow Waterfall was amazing. Our tour guide and driver, Donald Macnaughton, was great. Very knowledgeable and laid back. He brought us to wonderful places.
Our Volcano National Park tour was amazing! Another tour company canceled at last minute, but we were able to get our private tour booked quickly. Our guide, Katelynn, was very friendly and knowledgeable about all of the stops we made, including Lili’uokalani Gardens and Rainbow Falls. Katelynn shared lots of history during our Volcano National Park tour, asked about our interests and hiking skill level, and brought us to the best viewing areas. She even shared her experience with a lava flow near her home. Overall, our trip to Volcano National Park was amazing. We would definitely book another tour with Katelynn again in the future!
Absolutely amazing!!! Donald was a great tour guide and we were so fortunate to go to volcano when it was erupting!!!
We had a wonderful day on our private tour of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park from our cruise ship, thanks to Katelynn! From start to finish, everything was smooth, well organized, and stress-free. Katelynn was friendly, knowledgeable, and made the entire experience enjoyable. She answered all of our questions with patience and shared so much interesting information about the volcanoes, the island, and the local history. The scenery was absolutely incredible, and having a private tour allowed us to explore at a comfortable pace without feeling rushed. Katelynn made sure we saw all the highlights while also tailoring the experience to our interests. It was truly one of the best days of our cruise, and we would highly recommend this tour to anyone visiting Hawaii by ship. Thank you, Katelynn, for such a memorable experience!
Pick up was easy and timely. Don knew the best route and places to stop for photos and local treats/food. Transport was nice. Clean, and comfortable. Or guide knew a great deal about the islands and each of our stops.
Henry was incredible. He started the tour a few minutes early and we stayed ahead of the cruise ship excursion buses all day. Toured downtown a little then off to volcano natl park. We went all around the park including the lava fields on the back side. We finished the day walking through a lava tube
Horrible experience, our tour guide, Donald knew little about Hawaii and the places my family and I were visiting. It was very unprofessional, we were quite literally picked up in an unmarked minivan in a park and the thought occured to me that "we could be getting kidnapped right now and it would be this exact sitaution." Quite frankly the car smelled of something. He had no overall schedule and just did whatever. We went to a few place, most of the time was spent driving, and for the price, it wasn't worth it. I found that we would visit random and obscure places, we would chat for several minutes while standing there, then drive 45 minutes to the next place. He had about as much idea about what was happening as we did. It could've been $200 and still not worth it. Could've gone to the one or two cool places ourselves and saved a lot of money.
This was a private tour with the tour guide picking us up and dropping us off at the airport. We toured Hilo and the active volcano. The tour guide stopped at various stops (ones he knew and the ones we asked). He was very polite, patient, and very accommodating. He always dropped us off at the front entrances then parked his car. I highly recommend Donald M. when traveling to the Hawaii Big Island (Named Hawaii).
Fantastic!! We had your guide Mr. Henry.., the BEST! He gave a detailed history and knew the best spots to stop. Very satisfied with the trip!
We had a nice tour with Dramma our tour guide. She picked us up very close to the port and gave us a nice tour of the Hilo area. The highlight was Volcanoes National Park where we arrived just in time to see a bit of lava flow. Dramma was super nice and gave an informative and interesting history of the area. Highly recommend!
Took an AMAZING tour of Hilo with Dramma who took us to secret spots only locals would know of, and saw the volcanos up close! Highly recommend taking the tour with her if you can.
Our tour guide, Dramma, was amazing. She was so knowledgeable, friendly and laid back. She made the tour super fun. We were there with our young adult kids and the whole family thoroughly enjoying it. We saw some things that we would not have seen if we went out in our own. I would highly recommend this tour and if I could give Dramma 5 1/2 stars I would! We have done a lot of private tours and she was definitely one of the best!!!
Do not take this tour!! Our tour guide changed the itinerary and did not take us to Volcanoes National Park or the Thurston Lava Tube, the two main locations for the tour. Our tour guide Dramma deprived us of the sole purpose of the tour, to see Volcanoes National Park. We have been fighting with Viator and the operator Barbil Tours for a refund but both companies are saying they delivered something they didn't. In addition to skipping the main stops, the transport had no A/C in 80 degree weather, no water was provided, and the guide Dramma was unprofessional (walking and talking with a sandwich while we weren't eating) and unhygienic (peeing in bushes while at the same time telling us no bathrooms were available). This was so disappointing since we planned our entire Volcano experience around this tour. We have been on alot of private tours and this is not worth $95, let alone the $950 they are charging. Be warned, this is a complete scam.
There were three of us so we fit the excursion perfectly. It was great to have just us and the guide. We kept noticing that tour buses and how much better it was with just us. Our guide was great.
It was very interesting. There was however, nothing we could have not done on our own with a rental car. We would have liked more information during our time with the driver. I can not them a guide.
We had an excellent guide named Michael who had a wealth of knowledge to share about the volcanoes, history, and many sites along the way. Highly recommended this excursion!
Like every private tour like this, the experience is as much about what you want to experience as it is what is described. Our guide Dramma took us into a lava tube, helped us check out Rainbow Falls, took us on a walk into the barren and amazing 2018 eruption field and up to the rim of Fissure 8 that was the source of all that destruction and beauty. We also wandered down beautiful Banyan Drive and into Liliuokalani Gardens, browsed some Hilo shops, bought local fruits in the Hilo farmers market, and grabbed a coffee in peaceful Pahoa. We opted not to drive into the volcano national park, as fissure 8 was a lot more interested and accessible. Dramma had a truly Hilo / Hawaiian vibe - spiritual, down to earth, and deeply versed in the people, lore, history and natural beauty of the island. A fun and informative day!
Michael was wonderful! He was full of information and fun facts. We got to see so much ….rainbow falls, the garden, lava flowing at the volcano national park, we walked through a lava tube and walked on a black sand beach! It was a fabulous day with a terrific guide!
We enjoyed this tour as this was a private tour. We changed the schedule with the driver as we didn’t want to stay for hours in the same spot. The driver was a young woman who was informative about the area and showed us a part of the Volcano area where hardly anyone comes, which was very special to see. She recommended a nice restaurant for lunch which we enjoyed. The reason we didn’t give this 5 stars as we advise this young driver to dress more appropriate and her hygiene needs improved. For the money we spend which was over $800 you should expect a more decent vehicle and someone who takes better care of themselves. Aside from that she is a pleasant young woman who gave interesting information. It was a successful day. We can recommend the tour. The rainfall waterfalls are special and we stopped at the black sand beach with beautiful blue, clear water. The volcano site is amazing to see and worthwhile to go to.
What a great day with Dramma. She picked us up right next to cruise ship, gave great contact info for any questions, etc. She took us to great spots for waterfalls, the town for shops/chocolate/coffee and then a great time at the volcano park. We went through the lava tubes, saw the steam vents and perfect views of the volcano. She knows the exact spot for the perfect picture. Our best day of our vacation!
