We toured the Temple - at the magic hour for the nightime ritual. thank goodness we had our tour guide, the site is incredibly complex and our guide did a great job navigating. We would not have enjoyed just simply touring alone - thank you!
Amazing experience— guide was so kind and knowledgeable with perfect English - knew exactly when and where to guide us to get the best experience and avoid the crowds! Great communication with organizer and organization! Highly recommend 🫶
Visiting the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic was one of the most special moments of our trip. Our guide was extremely knowledgeable and knew exactly what to see and the best timing to experience the morning puja, which made a huge difference. The ceremony itself was deeply moving, with chanting, drumming and offerings creating a powerful spiritual atmosphere. A beautiful, well-organised and unforgettable experience — highly recommended.
The temple complex is beautifully designed, combining Kandyan-style architecture with intricate wood carvings, stonework, and golden decorations. The inner sanctum where the tooth is kept is very ornate, but photography is not allowed inside. The temple has a peaceful courtyard, bell towers, and a pond, giving a serene feeling even amidst crowds.
Unfortunately we got caught up in traffic getting to the temple but our guide had waited for us. This was on a Saturday, not sure if it’s busier but you need plenty of time to get into city and park. The temple itself was busy but everyone was able to get round. The guide was very friendly and informative of the temple and it’s history. Could have stayed a bit longer as it was very peaceful but understand that there has to be a time limit on the tour.
An amazing experience with our guide Sampath who helped us navigate the crowds and imparted all his knowledge to us. The temple is beautiful and the 9.30 ceremony worth getting up early for.
The Temple of the Tooth Relic is stunning and filled with history. The temple itself is beautiful, and our guide’s knowledge really enhanced the visit, helping us navigate the crowds and understand the significance. We attended the 6 pm ceremony, which was atmospheric but very busy. One downside was that we had to wait inside the temple for quite a while while the guide went to collect another couple who were late, which interrupted the tour. Also, it’s worth noting that it’s much cheaper to buy the tickets directly rather than through a tour. Overall, a must-see in Sri Lanka, but plan ahead for crowds and consider arranging tickets yourself.
Tour was great and Sampath our tour guide was excellent. We were updated by Lakpura (tour co.) who our driver, guide and times would be. Another excellent and smooth running tour with lovely drivers and guides by Lakpura. Highly recommend!
We could not make the visit as the guide asked for cancellation due a too big attendance, despite our confirmed tickets, paid in advance. I am waiting for the reimbursment
The temple of the sacred tooth relic is world famous place of worship. It is in Kandy, Sri Lanka.there is a tooth of lord Buddha.this most sacred temple is visited daily by thousands of local and foreign devotees and tourists.
its a way to visit this temple for Buddhist or non Buddhist people who likes to be in Kandy in srilanka, so its so beauty full place and Kandy town and lake its feeling so nice to spend few times,
Buddha’s tooth was apparently snatched from his funeral pyre and smuggled in to Sri Lanka by a princess and here it is kept in a casket and is considered very holy. People come to make offerings and hope their prayers are answered. Beautiful flowers are sold at many stalls outside. One must not take photos of anyone in front of the buddhas. There is a memorial to a faithful elephant and people can light incense sticks for loved ones. Most people wear white. All must show respect by covering legs and shoulders. Shoes are not worn in the whole complex. 200 rupees to have them looked after. Go early and avoid holy days.
We were here in a private tour, all info about budism(theory and practice) were well received, we spotted the people doing prayers&ofrandes, learned not to do pictures to people/tourists in front of budha(!).We saw the famous sacred elephant(mummified). After all a religious experience for the non budhist.
I am sure it is amazing however having already done Siem Reap etc etc Just about templed out.. The roof however when it shone across the lake was stunning but was shadowed in our opinion by the turtles, Huge Bats, Monitors, Cranes, Egrets Monkeys and Kingfishers in the most amazing TREES surrounding the lake which you can walk around for free... just saying that's all... definitely go here if you can :)
This is a very holy place for Buddhists hence it is a must visit for religious reasons, however as a tourist you may not find it worth the money as the temple and important items in the temple are closed and open only for certain intervals of time. When we went around noon everything was closed and we saw scores of pilgrims waiting for the temple to open . As a keen tourist I had nothing much to see except for the external temple building. Additionally the walk from the ticket counter is a short walk however in the scorching sun you may burn your foot as you have to remove your foot wear before entering the temple premises. If you don’t know the correct time when the temple is open then you may want to rethink before going in.
Not worse attending a ceremony. People are pushing and there's nothing to see but tons of people. Unfortunately i was here during Sri Lankan holiday which probably didn't make it lees crowdy. The rip you off because you are a foreginer.
Tickets never advised. We were told a refund would occur. We are still waiting for a refund and have had no further contact.
Interesting visit with the philosophy of Buddhism explained in English, on the panels within the Temple. All visitors are expected to remove shoes prior to entry to the grounds. Temple guides offer to show you around and will expect a large tip from western travellers. I was advised 200/300 rupees was an acceptable amount. Flowers can be purchased to offer as an act of respect within the temple. Amazing architecture, and worth visiting the museum if you have time. We went on a sunday and Kandy and the temple were very busy. There is a high level of interest in western travellers and be prepared to have your photo taken with large family groups of local people! This temple is well worth a visit.
Sithum kindly arranged our tickets and taxi for the temple of tooth tour. Our guide was really knowledgable and the tour was very interesting. We learnt lots about the history and the temple was beautiful. Sithum ensured we got there safely and our driver took us to meet the guide so we knew where to go. Sithum also went above and beyond to help us arrange a taxi for the following day to go to Sigiriya, he has made our trip so far really smooth. We would definitely recommend booking this tour - we’ve had a great service.
Dushan from Lakpura Travels for Tooth Relic was really nice. He was well aware about the history and shared all the information. He was polite and helpful in his behavior.
Be prepared to walk in your bare feet from entrance to temple and back on cobbled stones. It is most impressive as the sun sets. Inside the temple is very impressive. A must do when in Kandy.
Booked through Viator, prior to our trip. We ended up at the organization Lakpura. The visit could not go better. The guide Sampath was waiting for us at the entrance for the agreed time. We got a detailed explanation of the most important things, were on time at the ceremony and were the first at the doors that opened at a certain moment. That way we would have seen everything in no time, while other people stood in a (long) line. Great organizers, great guide. Highly recommended!
Quite beautiful but a rather pushy guide. We wanted to look around ourselves, but that was not allowed, we were assigned a guide. Then we looked around with a guide. Went at a decent pace! We found the stuffed elephant Raja the most interesting. Afterwards we gave the guide a big tip, but he didn't think that was enough. He begged for more, but we thought what we already gave him was very reasonable. Then he walked away very angry with the money in his hands without any 'thank you' and didn't look back. We understand that they depend on reasonable tips, but we found this downright rude and not a nice ending.
The temple is very beautiful, there are many things to see. It's very big. It is essential to take a guide so as not to get lost and have explanations. Take shoes that are easily removed flip-flop or tap style. Exiting you can walk along a part of the lake that is not by the road which is nice.
