We enjoyed the many different parts of the city as well as learning about cultural significances of temples and shrines. Kay was gentile and gracious, and we enjoyed his laughter. My favorite part was seeing hidden paths and streets that gave us insight into the genuine Kyoto.

Itinerary
Begin your journey at Kanazawa’s striking station, featuring the iconic Tsuzumi Gate and Motenashi Dome.
Step back into the Edo period as you ride into one of Japan’s best-preserved geisha districts. Your guide will explain the origins of the chaya (teahouse) culture, the strict social hierarchy of Kanazawa’s merchant class, and how traditional arts like shamisen and tea ceremony thrived behind these latticed wooden facades. Learn why this district still echoes with the elegance of old Japan, and where geisha continue to perform today.
One of Japan’s Three Great Gardens, Kenrokuen offers more than just seasonal beauty—it’s a masterclass in feudal-era landscape design. Stroll through its meticulously planned paths as your guide explains the six traditional garden attributes it embodies (spaciousness, seclusion, artificiality, antiquity, water features, and panoramic views). Hear stories of how lords of the Kaga domain shaped this space not only for pleasure but to reflect their political power and aesthetics.
Cycle around the imposing white walls of Kanazawa Castle, the seat of the powerful Maeda clan for over 280 years. Your guide will share insights into the architecture—from fire-resistant storehouses to maze-like defensive gates—and the strategic importance of the castle in maintaining Kanazawa’s semi-autonomous status during the Tokugawa shogunate.
Tucked behind the castle grounds, this lesser-known gem was once the private garden of the feudal lord. Recently restored using historical records, it provides a quiet, meditative counterpoint to Kenrokuen. Your guide will walk you through the symbolism in its design and the role gardens played in diplomacy and inner-court life.
Ride to the stone-paved lanes lined with earthen walls and discover the lives of Kanazawa’s elite warrior class. As you explore the former samurai streets and canals of Nagamachi, you’ll hear how the samurai adapted to peacetime roles under the Maeda rule, and how their values of loyalty, restraint, and honour still echo in the culture today.

Great day exploring the highlights of Kanazawa. We learned a lot of the geisha and samurai history, visited the gardens and explored the city. Very informative and enjoyable day. Easy to get around.
Awesome 1/2 day with Rina exploring the beautiful city of Kanazawa. Communication was easy via WhatsApp and she met us early as we were the only people on the tour that day. We saw the highlights of Kanazawa and she gave us a lot of information we would not have known if we had gone on our own. Highly recommend this tour and Rina! And I’m not a e-bike person and it was incredibly easy.
We really enjoyed this tour - such a great way to see all the main sights! We rode around the Samarui district, two different Geisha districts (and came upon groups of Geiko and Maiko walking to their ceremonies), Kanazawa Castle and the Kenroku Gardens, which included a peaceful tea ceremony overlooking the gardens. We learned important facts and historical details with our very knowledgable guide, Mizutani. Highly recommend, thank you!
The half day 4 hour e bike tour was fantastic. The communication before the tour was very good and the meeting point easy to find. Our guide, Rina, made everything interesting and easy to understand. It was a pleasant surprise that we were able to keep the bikes for the rest of the day and return at our leisure. During the four hours, we covered two distinct Geisha districts, the famous and beautiful garden, the castle and samauri district. Our guide was extremely friendly and easy to talk with. We gained a lot of knowledge about Kanazawa and it's history. One of the highlights was enjoying matcha tea and sweets in a beautiful garden setting. I highly recommend this tour!
We spent 2 weeks in Japan, and this was one of my favorite things we did. It was an amazing way to see the top sites in the city. The morning start time was perfect for getting to a few places before the crowds. Our guide Lena was friendly, helpful and provided the right amount of information about each site along with answering questions we had. Would absolutely recommend. We used the bikes the rest of the afternoon and would do this again!
This was my first time on an E-bike but it was easy and fun. Our guide Rina was wonderful, so well organised with a lovely calm presence. Her English is outstanding and she even helped me locate a more obscure temple that I wanted to visit. I would recommend this to all ages as you stick to the back streets mainly so it is not daunting at all.
Best way to see the whole city in one tour! Especially if it's hot. We had a wonderful time with our friendly, knowledgeable guide. We learned so much context and many fun side stories...things we would never have known otherwise. Highly recommend!
We enjoyed our time on the E bike tour. Our local guide was super friendly and a great guide as we visited the geisha district. The gardens close to the castle and several other historical sites in Kanazawa. We also very much enjoyed our tea ceremony. It was a hot day, so the E bikes made for a way to get some breeze and enjoy the heat. We also really enjoyed driving down the back alleys in the back roads. There was a little traffic and you could see more of the daily life.
It was raining very hard so we couldn’t take the bike and did the tour with taxis. Except for the ninja temple, we didn’t need a guide to visit the other sites. I would have preferred that the activity would be cancelled. The price is too expensive if you don’t get the e bike experience.
Half day e-bike tour is a great introduction to history, culture and significant areas of Kanazawa including samarui. Geisha districts, the Castle and the Kenroku gardens. Our guide Gorrie provided a very engaging, informative and personal perspective of his city while highlighting important facts and historical details. The tea ceremony at traditional tea house in the castle park was a moment to enjoy the matcha while reflecting on the stunning beauty of the garden. Thank you Gorrie for a wonderful tour. Highly recommend this tour. Caroline and Mark
Guide was great but can’t remember his name. Tour had a great balance of information without getting boring. Good number of visited spots in the time, not rushed but didn’t drag our feet either. On a rainy day it might not be quite as much fun. Hot day but e-bike requires virtually no effort. Doubt we rode much more than 5km. Bikes remain yours till midnight.
Great 4 hour tour with just the two of us. A combination of easy e-biking and walking. Our guide Rina was very friendly with excellent English and extremely knowledgeable about the local area. Really recommend doing it
Amazing tour with a kind and knowledgeable guide (Gori). Really enjoyed the less frenetic vibe in Kanazawa after arriving in Japan and spending a couple of days in Tokyo. This is a very beautiful city and a lovely region of Japan. Using the e-bikes was very easy (provided you know how to ride a bike). Learned a lot about the Samurai and Geisha.
Relaxing tour, very informative, covered a lot of good attractions in a short period of time and receptive to questions. Rina is an all-star with historical information along with current Kanazawa events (and dinner recommendations!). We enjoyed the whole tour especially tea time and in the gardens. We had a sighting of a geisha as well. It was a fun afternoon.
A great tour, very good knowledge of the city. Good pace. Was happy to take us shopping, anything we wanted
The half day e-bike tour with Rina is highly recommended! It is a very fun way to see some of the popular places in Kanazawa. Having a knowledgeable, friendly and engaging guide makes the experience memorable! I would highly recommend this excursiion.
Uri was exceptional as a guide. So personable, kind and helpful. She asked us what we wanted to do in advance and she designed a tour for us which deepened out appreciation of this lovely city. We would highly highly recommend her to guide you and help you appreciate Kanazawa.
Great way for me and my 12 year old daughter to see the city. It was great to be able to use the bikes for the rest of the day.
Highlight of our time in Kanazawa! Our guide, Lina, was so kind, patient, knowledgeable and funny. She guided us to spots we would have never found otherwise! Highly recommend.
Nothing beats a a bicycle tour with a local when you’re new in town. This one was kind of exceptional though... Rina was our fabulous guide today and took us on a four-hour cultural and historical tour. She really knows her stuff! She’s fun and kind, and really is an outstanding tour guide. We learned so much about Geisha, samurai, gardens, tea, construction, snow, roads, earthquakes, places to eat, etc etc. Thank you Rina! I’ll be sure to tell all my friends about Beyond Kanazawa tours.
Recommend this trip for anyone visiting Kanazawa as it visits all/most of the key places you may consider to see. It provides ideas which places to visit again for a bit longer. Very knowledgeable guide and a good pace of this 4 hr tour
A perfect morning hitting all the key sites in Kanazawa. Rina was an amazing guide. We loved her knowledge and her fun sense of humor.
I joined this bike tour in Kanazawa, and overall it was a good experience with a few things worth noting. In general, bike tours are a great way to explore a city. They allow you to cover a lot of ground efficiently and reach multiple points of interest that would take much longer to visit on foot or by public transportation. The route itself was well planned and included all the major highlights in Kanazawa. This is great if you want to get a broad overview of the city and feel like you’ve "seen it all". However, the time spent at each stop was quite short, which was a bit disappointing. That said, if you’re the type of traveler who likes to use a tour as a first introduction and then revisit places more thoroughly the next day, this works really well - which is exactly what we ended up doing. As for the guide, he was friendly and knowledgeable, but it was often difficult to hear his explanations. Sometimes this was because the group kept moving quickly between stops, and other times because the areas were very crowded with tourists, making it hard to physically get close enough to listen. It would have been much better if he had used a microphone or consistently waited for the whole group to gather before explaining (on the occasions when he did wait, it worked very well). We joined the 1:00 PM tour, and I do think an earlier start time would have improved the experience. There were several moments where we arrived at locations together with large groups of other tourists, which took away from the overall atmosphere. That being said, one of the standout moments was the visit to the tea house near Kanazawa Castle. It was one of the few times during the tour where things felt calm, almost private and exclusive to our group. The garden there was absolutely beautiful, and it created a peaceful break from the more crowded stops. Overall, this is a nice way to get an introduction to Kanazawa and see the main sights in a short amount of time.
An excellent way to get around Kanazawa, very safe riding with an excellent guide. Several stops along the way. Lots to see but he kept us on time while still allowing time for photos, viewpoints, etc. Very good commentaries from our guide. We had the bikes all day, which was a bonus we didn't realize. So we went back to several sights in the afternoon before returning the bike.
The half-day e-bike tour in Kanazawa was excellent and a highlight of our visit to the city. We were lucky as our family was the only one booked for the 9am tour, so it was really like a private tour. The bikes were great fun and so easy to use, you can cover a lot of ground very quickly and easily, and our guide Rina was lovely and very knowledgeable when explaining the history of the various places we stopped at. We would recommend the 9am tour as you’ll arrive at some of the Geiko districts before other tour groups, and if lucky, may even catch a glimpse of a Maiko rushing to morning lessons as we did. As part of the tour we enjoyed a bowl of matcha and sweet at a beautiful, quiet tea house with incredible garden views next to Kanazawa Castle, and after the tour had finished, could continue using the bikes until midnight if we had wanted to. Thank Rina, you were a superb guide.
Nikes were easy to manuver. Guide was friendly. Got matcha and a treat at a beautiful tea house. It was great
We had a wonderful time in Kanazawa, and this bike tour was the highlight of our visit. Rina was personable, professional, and highly knowledgeable about every aspect of the city. My dad had many seemingly random questions that she always had an answer for! This is a must do if you plan to visit Kanazawa. To top it off she gave us some wonderful restaurant recommendations. I will have to come back in the winter sometime when there is more snow!
It was a great tour! Even though we couldn’t do the bike tour as planned, we explored on foot and by bus, and Rina made sure we made the most of the day. You can really tell she loves sharing the history and culture of Kanazawa, especially since she’s from there. She took us through the geisha district, the samurai district, and the castle, explaining everything with so much passion and insight. We honestly wish we could have spent the whole day with her, as four hours went by so quickly. She also gave us wonderful tips on what else to see, where to go, and even great food recommendations.
Really great experience for all the family! Rina was a fantastic guide - with excellent enthusiasm and knowledge about Kanazawa. Bikes and helmets were all organised, at very short notice. The day started sunny but turned cold and wet, but this didn't detract from our experience. (Even our cold 8 yr old was buzzing.) E bikes were a great way to introduce the sites of this stunning city. Rina didn't overload us with too much information. The trip was a mixture of dodging crossings and riding the backstreets (fun), stopping at tourist highlights but knowing the shortcuts/ best parts to see (economical with our time-short visit) and a peaceful tea stop halfway. Highly recommend this experience.
My husband and I have not ridden bikes in over 20 years. Our guide, Rina, was very patient. We had to practice a bit and then we were off. Great way to see the city, we had a wonderful time riding around. She was able to add in an extra stop at a shrine we had wanted to see. It was cold and she even provided us with hand warmers. She was so accommodating and explained to us that we could use the bikes the rest of the day after we did our tour around Kanazawa. She dropped us off at the fish market so we could grab lunch and then we were able to take the bikes to the art museum. Definitely practice bike riding if you haven’t done so in a while before you jump on these E bikes. It will make things much quicker and smoother. Thank you Rina, you are so patient!

It was a great experience and Lena was very flexible with the start time and was very knowledgeable with her history so it was awesome
Rina was an absolutely fantastic tour guide! She was kind, focused, and deeply knowledgeable— also going above and beyond to take photos of us, offer food & drink suggestions, and even call to adjust a dinner reservation for us. It was refreshing to feel a tour guide care about their job and bring a natural spark to the tour. We loved the experience and would recommend it to anyone looking to learn and experience beautiful Kanazawa, 200%! Thank you so much, Rina!!
We spent the day touring with Rina. The bike tour was absolutely fantastic. We really enjoyed our day, Rina took the time to explain all of the history and stories of the area and showed us great places to eat. We had the time to take pictures, enjoy the views and we were able to bike around once the tour was over. We absolutely recommend this tour.
We highly recommend this tour. The communication from our guide Rina was excellent and her commentary during the tour was amazing.
This activity was a good introduction to Kanazawa. Unfortunately it was forecast for heavy rain so we did the trip using the bus and walking instead which was still good. Nicola our guide was great and we enjoyed our afternoon with him. The highlight was the tea in the Kenrokuen garden with the stunning view.
Loved the e-bike tour. We only had one full day in Kanazawa and it we were able to see so much. Lina our tour guide was from Kanazawa and she spoke with such knowledge and pride.
This is the best way to tour Kanasawa! The e-bikes are easy to operate. It was a lot of fun riding through neighborhoods to get to each main site. We spent ample time seeing each site and stopped for tea and dessert at a beautiful garden. We went to the Samarai district, garden and castle, and Geisha district. The sites are too far apart to walk and riding meant we weren’t confined on a bus and didn’t need to figure out the public bus system. Our guide Lena gave very interesting and thorough information at each site and took pics so we didn’t need to rely on selfies. It was one of our favorite activities during our two week visit to Japan. Highly recommend.
Nicola was our guide…. He was extremely knowledgeable as well as easy to understand, witty and extremely charming. There were only 4 of us, including myself and my adult son, which was extra nice…. I have only positive things to say and would encourage anyone to take this tour. It’s a great way to get a feel for the city
We had a great time with our guide, Rina. She was bubbly and excited to share Kanazawa with us. We learned a lot from her about Kanazawa's history with the shogun, where it's name came from, and the different districts. We went at a nice pace and stayed off busy streets which was great. Helmets were available upon request. Great tour - highly recommend.
We had a fantastic morning tour with Rina. She is a Kanazawa local and shared many details about the rich history of the city and the locations we visited. This was a wonderful way to see the city highlights, and gain a deeper understanding while we did it. The stop for tea and sweets was at a delightful garden. Thank you Rina for a lovely tour!
Rina is a real professional, focused on the items that were important to us, provided many tips for the rest of our visit
With the inclement weather Rina suggested a walking/Bus tour and it did not disappoint. She was very knowledgeable about Kanazawa and we thoroughly enjoyed the hours spent exploring. Highly recommend
Enjoyed the bike tour but could be a little more organised getting the bikes ready at the start. Our tour guide Yuzuki was very friendly and went at a good pace for us. We got to see so much of Kanazawa. Our tour was in the morning so everywhere was nice and quiet. Would recommend this tour.
Great way to see a large variety of sights in a short time. Lots of time at each site to explore and guides were very helpful and shared lots of interest information. We did the 9am tour and most sites had very few people a real bonus. I would do this tour again
We had a great time with Rina. There was a chance of rain so we went on foot and public transportation. We explored the gardens and the historic sites. Tea house was a highlight of the tour.
Rina was an excellent guide! Since she is a local she was able to impart so much inside knowledge and give us recommendations for our stay in Kanazawa. We wished we booked the tour at the start of our stay so we could take advantage of all of her advice. Professional tour with a very kind, personable and knowledgeable guide. Thank you again Rina.
Nicola was very friendly and knowledgeable. He made our day a lot of fun! We really liked traveling around Kanazawa by bike.
Kananzawa is perfect for exploring by e-bike. Rina is delightful and passionate about sharing the city's history. She also recommended other things to do and helped me locate them. I enjoyed all the stops, and the photo ops, and everything I learned.
