Itinerary
Kenrokuen (兼六園) in Kanazawa is justifiably classified as one of Japan's "three most beautiful landscape gardens" alongside Mito's Kairakuen and Okayama's Korakuen. The spacious grounds used to be the outer garden of Kanazawa Castle and were constructed by the ruling Maeda family over a period of nearly two centuries. Opened to the public in 1871, Kenrokuen features a variety of flowering trees which provide the garden with a different look for each season.
The D.T. Suzuki Museum (鈴木大拙館, Suzuki Daisetsu Kan) is a small museum commemorating the life and works of Suzuki Daisetz Teitaro (1870-1966), a prominent Buddhist philosopher. The museum was opened in 2011 in the district of Kanazawa where Suzuki was born, a ten minute walk from Kenrokuen. On display are exhibitions showcasing the writings of D.T. Suzuki which allow the visitor to learn more about his life and philosophy. In addition, the architecture of the museum serves as an interpretation of D.T. Suzuki's life and religious scholarship; its use of clean, simple lines and open spaces causes visitors to pause and reflect.
Myoryuji Temple (妙立寺, Myōryūji), commonly known as Ninjadera ("Ninja Temple"), was built by the Maeda lords, rulers over the region during the Edo Period. While not actually associated with ninja, the temple earned its nickname because of its many deceptive defences. Since the shogun imposed strict building restrictions as one way of weakening his regional lords, Myoryuji was designed to circumvent the restrictions and serve as a disguised military outpost. It was built with considerable defences and escape routes, so that its defenders could alert the castle in the event of an attack.
A chaya (lit. teahouse) is an exclusive type of restaurant where guests are entertained by geisha who perform song and dance. During the Edo Period, chaya were found in designated entertainment districts, usually just outside the city limits. Kanazawa has three, well preserved chaya districts, Higashi Chayagai (Eastern Chaya District), Nishi Chayagai (Western Chaya District) and Kazuemachi.
The 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art (金沢21世紀美術館, Kanazawa Nijūichiseiki Bijutsukan) opened in 2004 in downtown Kanazawa, just a few steps from Kenrokuen. It exhibits works of acclaimed contemporary artists from Japan and all over the world, and is among Japan's most popular art museums. The architecture of the 21st Century Museum is unique and distinguishes it from other museums and buildings around Kanazawa. The museum is comprised of a circular building, 112.5 meters in diameter, with no facade or main entrance. It was designed without a front or back to discourage its patrons from approaching the museum, and consequently its art, from only one direction.
The Seisonkaku Villa (成巽閣, Seisonkaku) was built in the last years of the Edo Period by a Maeda lord for his mother. It is one of the most elegant, remaining samurai villas in Japan. Located in the southeast corner of Kenrokuen, Seisonkaku is a large structure with a number of expansive tatami rooms on two floors. One of its interesting features is the roof which covers its garden viewing deck. It was built without supports that would interrupt the view of the garden.
Nagamachi (長町) was a samurai district located at the foot of the former Kanazawa Castle, where samurai and their families used to reside. The area preserves a historic atmosphere with its remaining samurai residences, earthen walls, private entrance gates, narrow lanes and water canals. One of the main attractions of the district is the centrally located Nomura-ke, a restored samurai residence displaying the lifestyle and artifacts of the era when samurai were prosperous. In contrast is the Shinise Kinenkan Museum, a restored pharmacy displaying the lives of the merchant class which rose in prosperity as the samurai declined.
Omicho Market (近江町市場, Ōmichō Ichiba) has been Kanazawa's largest fresh food market since the Edo Period. Today, it is a busy and colorful network of covered streets lined by about 200 shops and stalls. While most shops specialize in the excellent local seafood and produce, you can also find flowers, clothing, kitchen tools and more on sale. Although the market is most exciting during the morning hours, it also gets quite busy around noon, when tourists and locals arrive to have lunch at restaurants inside the market. It is not unusual for lines to build in front of the popular restaurants, many of which specialize in rice bowls topped with fresh Kanazawa seafood.
From 1583 to the end of the Edo Period, Kanazawa Castle (金沢城, Kanazawajō) was the seat of the powerful Maeda Clan, lords of Kaga, a feudal domain ranking second only to the Tokugawa possesions in terms of size and wealth. The castle burnt down several times over the centuries, and the most recent fires of 1881 were survived only by two storehouses and the Ishikawa-mon Gate. The gate dates from 1788 and faces Kenrokuen. For several decades, Kanazawa University occupied the former castle grounds until the campus was moved to the city's outskirts in the early 1990s. Since then, a project is underway to rebuild the castle's former buildings. In the meantime, most central structures are standing again and make a visit more interesting.
A chaya (茶屋, lit. teahouse) is an exclusive type of restaurant where guests are entertained by geisha who perform song and dance. Kanazawa has three well preserved chaya districts, Higashi Chayagai (Eastern Chaya District), Nishi Chayagai (Western Chaya District) and Kazuemachi. Each of the three districts has its own charms and mix of shops, cafes and chaya restaurants. The Nishi Chaya District (西茶屋街, Nishi Chayagai), is a compact area just a short walk from the Ninja Temple. It is much smaller and quieter than the Higashi Chayagai and has just one attraction open to the public: a museum, the Nishi Chaya Shiryokan, which displays the history of the district and is a meeting place for free tours of the area (Japanese only).
Oyama Shrine (尾山神社, Oyama Jinja) is dedicated to Maeda Toshiie, the first lord of the powerful, local Maeda Clan. The shrine was constructed in 1599 by Toshiie's successor, Maeda Toshinaga on Mount Utatsu. It was later moved to its present location. Oyama Shrine is known for its unusual gate, which was designed by a Dutch architect, using elements of European and Asian religious themes. While the first story displays a mixture of Japanese and Chinese influence, the upper stories once served as a lighthouse and feature a Dutch style, stained glass window.

Yoshi was exceptionally knowledgeable about the local history and took us to many excellent spots. He was also very solicitous when it came to accommodating my elderly mother's difficulties in navigating some of the tougher physical obstacles on the tour. Would recommend to anyone looking to know more about the history of Kanazawa
YOSHI met us at our hotel and was very friendly and helpful. We walked around the city and he took us to view several different spots including samurai living quarters, geisha houses, the beautiful garden built by Maeda san. Yoshi was knowledgeable about the entire city and it's treasured history. He inspired me to do some reading on Maeda san, a leader who played a huge part in the development of the city. Yoshi was an excellent guide, and even provided a LOT of recommendations and useful information for after our tour. We would definitely recommend YOSHI san! Note: you will need a IC card to board some of the city buses.
Great tour with Yoshi!! Very knowledgeable and flexible on our tour needs . Highly recommend Kenroken palace and gardens were wonderful , the shrine and the Sumari district
Our guide Tomoko was great. She helped us to find the right places to visit and gave as a lot of information about Kanazawa and the Japan history. She also helped us to plan our following day to visit Shirawaka-go.
We, a family of 5, had a very enjoyable 6-hour private tour of Kanazawa with Hideharu Yoshino from Japan Guide Agency. Communication before the tour was excellent and made it very easy to plan the day. Yoshi’s English was excellent, which made communication throughout the tour very smooth. He provided very clear and interesting explanations, giving us a better understanding of the history and culture of the places we visited. During the tour we explored Kanazawa Castle, Kenrokuen Garden, and the Geisha and Samurai districts. It was a well-organized and informative tour. Highly recommended.
Fantastic day with Yossi! He made everything so easy, including making changes mid-trip! He gave us real experience, history and fun for all of us.

Gucci was lovely. Kind, nice sense of humor with excellent English skills (she taught English in schools). Our family of 6 adults was with her for 6 hours in Kanazawa- very knowledgeable about this great City. We toured cultural, religious and historical sites - her pace was perfect and she took time to both engage with us and answer our many questions. Also took us to a great place for lunch and offered up some strong additional recommendations for our remaining time in the area. Highly recommended!
Gucci was an excellent guide, knowledgeable and pleasant. We were able to see all the key sights in Kanazawa and her choice for lunch was amazing. She will work with you to cater to your interests, and is really flexible with on the spot changes. Highly recommend Gucci and her tour.
We were a group of 6 people and Yoshi was our wonderful guide. A comprehensive tour of kanazawa visiting major attractions with the vast knowledge of Yoshi - recommended!
We had a great tour with Asa. She is very knowledgeable about Kanazawa and Japanese culture in general. Her husband is a rice farmer outside of Kanazawa, and she also gave a good perspective on rural life in Japan. We got a good sense of Kanazawa in a short time. We really enjoyed our market tour and sushi lunch. I would definitely recommend taking a tour with Asa.
Yoshi was a great guide. We worked with him to create a custom tour of Kanazawa which did not disappoint. He was friendly, informative and provided us with a wonderful tour in this beautiful city.
Yoshi was an excellent Guide and has great history knowhow. It was a great tour
Very good tour. It was a rainy day. Yumiko was an excellent tour guide. We negotiated the weather without a problem. Moreover, when we visited Kenroku garden, she explained the meaning of the garden so that even I, who knows nothing of Japanese gardens, could appreciate this work of art. Please book Yumiko. She is excellent
Excellent time exploring Kanazawa and learning its history with our guide, Yoshi-san. Getting around the city was easy with him as our guide and he took us to the tea house districts, the Myouryuji temple, and Kanazawa castle. He taught us about the local culture, as well as how Kanazawa came to be and why it flourished as a hub of culture. He als recommended a lot of activities and food for us to try
We had a very enjoyable day with Yoshi, examining Kanasawa’s castle and garden, geisha and samurai homes. Yoshi was very knowledgeable and spoke English very well. The length of the tour was a bit long for us seniors, considering the amount of walking and stairs!
Thoroughly enjoyed our tour of Kanazawa! Our guide, Yumi, was friendly, personable, knowledgeable, insightful and helpful!
Thank you, Yoshi, for a wonderful day in Kanazawa! Saw the sights of this beautiful city and learned a lot about Japanese culture. Thank you Arrogate Yoshi K&K
Great experience with Yoshino, very knowledgeable guide. Explored the castle and gardens, tea rooms, samurai houses, fish market and others.
Very interesting tour with Masayo. She took us to excellent locations including the Samurai housing district and super location for lunch.
Worth every penny! This tour was a game changer because one thing is seeing the temples, castle and garden but with this tour you learn that there is so much more behind it. Our guide was Yoshi and we are extremely greatful with him, he explained us everything in detail, responded doubts about the places we visited and even a little about japanese culture in general. He was very polite, friendly and in the best mood so we could learn about the places we saw. My wife and I couldn't be happier with Yoshi.
The 4 places we selected to visit were great, well worth seeing. The tour took up nearly the whole 6 hours, time well spent. We had to take 5 buses which saved time and walking, but discovered later that we could have purchased a 24 hour/day ticket a bit cheaper and still had rest of the day to utilise it.
We had a day of adventure with our guide Asa in the city of Kanazawa. Our day started us off meeting Asa at the cruise terminal where although there was a slight hiccup with the meeting time, it went flawlessly from there. Our tour consisted of a couple of taxi rides and bus rides to different places of interest which we had picked out prior to the trip. Asa, lead us to and thru each teaching us so many things about the history and their significance. She explained to us not only important things about the past but also currently and how and why they still remain important to this day. It did seem apparent, but after making small talk earlier in the day, we did learn that she had been a teacher for her entire profession. During that conversation there was a very candid moment where we talked about her former career, and you could see the sparkle in her eye where she had a genuine love of teaching, still connecting with people, and the significance of her profession. She lead us thru our tour talking and teaching us along the way and yet stopping at appropriate times to let us soak things in, take a picture or to just recuperate at times. I could not believe the pep in her step and she could’ve probably out done all of us in a race. She was also thoughtful enough to buy each of us a small bento (or box lunch) for us to enjoy during a break and made sure that when she was completed with our tour, that we knew exactly how to get back to our cruise terminal. We had a very enjoyable day and an incredible experience of one of the most beautiful Japanese gardens, a historic castle, a “Ninja” temple and an open market. Thank you Asa!!! One of the most significant things at the end was that Asa humbly asked if we could write a short entry into a diary which she kept of all of her past tours. She claimed that it was meaningful for her to reflect back on as well as to help keep up her English. Asa told us that one of her main goals was to become a better guide, and Asa we would all not hesitate to say that you were, and are incredible. Thank you for the experience, your thoughtfulness and your patience with our large group. We are so happy that we had the experience you shared and provided with us.
We were very fortunate to have Shoten Sasaki as our guide in Kanazawa. We let him know before we arrived what we were interested in and he organised a great day for us including booking a fabulous place for lunch where locals eat and if Sho hadn’t booked we would have missed out! He showed us a variety of historical and cultural sights and we especially enjoyed the local markets. Sho is very knowledgeable and we felt we really got to know the best of Kanazawa on our full day private tour with a local.
Our guide was Hideharu Yoshino, and he was great to show us all the most interesting and secret places of Kanazawa. Super prepared on the history of town and a very nice person. We strongly recommend him!
An excellent tour that was tailored to our requirements with a superb guide We learned so much not only about Kanazawa but Japanese history and culture and Yoshi was the perfect teacher
Asa was a wonderful guide. She planned the whole day out - tea ceremony, market visit, lunch then temple and museum in the afternoon. Also was a great help with bus tickets and transit around town to save out legs!
She is a local which is, I think, very important to get a proper feeling of the city and its people. I do recommend the experience, I think it is a great way to visit some of the city highlights and she will suggest other places to visit during your stay in Kanazawa
We are a family of 4 (daughters 6 and 9) who visited Kanazawa for a day as a cruise ship port in April 2025. The ship was at port from 7 am to 5 pm (return to ship at 4:30). We booked this tour — which was much more inexpensive than the ship — and we quickly were given the contact info of our guide, Yoshi. I reached out on WhatsApp and he responded quickly. He gave us several options and we let him know what our preferences were — the Kanazawa castle and gardens, the Higashi Chaya-gai Geisha district, and the Nagamachi samurai district. He figured out all the logistics. We took the ship’s shuttle to Kanazawa central bus station where we met Yoshi at 9 am. He helped us get a day pass on the local buses which are very efficient. The first stop was the Geisha district. There were no geishas in the morning but the district architecture was very beautiful and traditional, and we had a chance to visit a geisha tea house. There are also a lot of local artisan shops and a gold leaf studio where you can book your own gold leaf art experience. Next was the castle and gardens which were spectacular especially because it was cherry blossom season. Yoshi I’ve so the best places to go for picture taking and exploration. He’s also a great photographer and knows everything about Japanese history. Finally was the samurai district with its dead end streets and historical architecture. We visited one of the Santiago homes that had been preserved. It was do impressive. I highly recommend this tour and Yoshi in particulsr. This is a private tour for a great price so you fan see what you want at your own pace, which is perfect especially if you have kids.
We loved our time with Masayo! Thank you for a wonderful tour. Jason and I learned so much and enjoyed every minute. We will definitely recommend her to our loved ones who would like to visit Kanazawa. It is such a beautiful city! We are looking forward to dinner at her sushi restaurant tonight! Thank you for the recommendation. Just so you know - we went to Huni restaurant for dinner last night and it was fantastic. Chef Takuo is an amazing cook and he is an artist, too! Please recommend it to your travelers.
My guide, Shoten, was great. He contacted me in advance of my arrival to introduce himself and see if there were any particular sights or interests I was interested to see/do. I explained that I was interested in local handicrafts and architecture, he then prepared a personalized itinerary of Kanazawa. He was most informative and made it very easy to cover many sights that I could not do on my own. He even found an excellent restaurant to try Kanazawa's famous oden which fit right into the planned schedule. Highly recommended!
Despite the bad weather (cold and raining) we very much enjoyed our day exploring the sights of Kanazawa with Sho. He took us to a number of interesting places (small museums, historical districts, houses and shrines, craft workshops) we would never have found by ourselves. He provided a lot of background information and history, and also took many photos of us which he made available to us after the tour via his online drive.
Absolutely loved the tour and specially the Guide. I loved her explanations and how she made the explanations interactive. She answered all of our questions and explained everything so we could understand!
Shoten, thank you for a wonderful experience touring Kanazawa and the great memories you have created for our family. We appreciated your knowledge, professionalism, how you adapted to our Australian sense of humour and the great photography. Ending the tour with the world-famous Kanazawa golden ice cream was a hit with the kids. All in all a fun day and a great way to appreciate the beauty, history and culture of Kanazawa.
We were in Kanazawa on a very rainy day. Sho was a great guide. He planned a tour for us that met our needs and interests, and took us to an excellent restaurant for lunch. We enjoyed our day very much.
We could get a taste of Kanazawa and its beauties with our guide, Shoten, who showed us and explained Japanese culture. He organized a fantastic lunch where we discovered Yuba! Without a doubt, the experience with the guide enriched our trip! Thanks Shoten. Adriana and family
Masayo Shirai was an excellent guide! We had the best experience & she showed us many local spots and the best sushi! Thankyou Masayo!!
Yoshi was a marvelous guide! His knowledge of the history, culture and area was exceptional. We were a bit delayed in departing the cruise terminal, as Yoshi was waiting in the terminal, but had no sign indicating my name or that he was with Japan Guide Agency. We spent a good bit of time, each thinking the other was delayed. Once we were underway, the tour was excellent.
Yoshi was fantastic… He was so intent on giving us a wonderful experience… To see everything and understand everything. I particularly like traveling on the buses with him… That was a very local experience. I would highly recommend Yoshi to anybody.
Yoshi was an amazing guide and enhanced our Kanazawa experience with his extensive knowledge of the city, history, culture, food, and more. He brought many things to life that we would not have experienced or understood on our own.
Hideharu Yoshino (Yoshi) was an EXCELLENT guide today! We saw so many parts of Kanazawa- exactly what we wanted to do. Thank you Yoshi!
All of it Very informative and interesting tour very knowledgeable on the local architecture and area
We had an excellent day walking Kanazawa with Yoshi. We visited Kanazawa Castle, the Samurai area, Kenrouken Gardens and Myoyru-ji Temple. Yoshi was an excellent guide, answering our many questions and went above and beyond to help us with buying Shinkansen tickets! We enjoyed our day tremendously. Thank you Yoshi😎
Extremely helpful. Assisted me future bus tkt. Very knowledgeable about all sites visited. Introduced me to Japanese lunch at fish market.
Very attentive guide and we got to view and visit many places with a very good explanation of everything. The tour guide was on time since the beginning and we covered a good amount of places visited, with very complete explanations
Our guide Keiko made our Kanazawa tour truly exceptional. Her deep knowledge of the city's history brought the sights to life. She was incredibly patient with us, answering all our questions and making sure we were comfortable and engaged throughout the tour. My family and I came away with a profound appreciation for Kanazawa’s rich heritage, thanks to Keiko’s insightful guidance. I wholeheartedly recommend this trip with Keiko for anyone looking to explore Kanazawa in depth.
Fujio was a great guide and patiently answered all my questions. He showed us the most interesting places in Kanazawa. Recommend him highly!
We had the most perfect day expertly guided by Keiko, perfect weather, the blossom was out and we learnt so much in our time together, thankyou Keiko!
Junko was an excellent guide, with lots of local knowledge. She adapted the tour very skilfully to the areas of our interest, which made the experience even more memorable. She shared lots of personal insights into the Japanese culture, values and lifestyle. Highly commendable.
