Sachi was our guide, and she was fantastic! We gave her a detailed itinerary of what we had originally planned over three days in Kanazawa, and she pulled from that itinerary to create a half-day guided tour that covered many of the items on our itinerary in a way that made sense with a guide. She picked us up at our lodgings, then we did a big loop around Kanazawa to hit the sites. Her English is incredible, and her sense of humor was endearing and made for a fun day. Most importantly, her shared knowledge of Kanazawa and Japanese history made our visit so much more meaningful. We didn't book a guide in every city we visited, and we wish we had a Sachi in each location!

Kenrokuen (兼六園) in Kanazawa is justifiably classified as one of Japan's "three most beautiful landscape gardens" alongside Mito's Kairakuen and Okayama's Korakuen. The spacious grounds used to be the outer garden of Kanazawa Castle and were constructed by the ruling Maeda family over a period of nearly two centuries. Opened to the public in 1871, Kenrokuen features a variety of flowering trees which provide the garden with a different look for each season.
The D.T. Suzuki Museum (鈴木大拙館, Suzuki Daisetsu Kan) is a small museum commemorating the life and works of Suzuki Daisetz Teitaro (1870-1966), a prominent Buddhist philosopher. The museum was opened in 2011 in the district of Kanazawa where Suzuki was born, a ten minute walk from Kenrokuen. On display are exhibitions showcasing the writings of D.T. Suzuki which allow the visitor to learn more about his life and philosophy. In addition, the architecture of the museum serves as an interpretation of D.T. Suzuki's life and religious scholarship; its use of clean, simple lines and open spaces causes visitors to pause and reflect.
Myoryuji Temple (妙立寺, Myōryūji), commonly known as Ninjadera ("Ninja Temple"), was built by the Maeda lords, rulers over the region during the Edo Period. While not actually associated with ninja, the temple earned its nickname because of its many deceptive defences. Since the shogun imposed strict building restrictions as one way of weakening his regional lords, Myoryuji was designed to circumvent the restrictions and serve as a disguised military outpost. It was built with considerable defences and escape routes, so that its defenders could alert the castle in the event of an attack.
A chaya (lit. teahouse) is an exclusive type of restaurant where guests are entertained by geisha who perform song and dance. During the Edo Period, chaya were found in designated entertainment districts, usually just outside the city limits. Kanazawa has three, well preserved chaya districts, Higashi Chayagai (Eastern Chaya District), Nishi Chayagai (Western Chaya District) and Kazuemachi.
The 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art (金沢21世紀美術館, Kanazawa Nijūichiseiki Bijutsukan) opened in 2004 in downtown Kanazawa, just a few steps from Kenrokuen. It exhibits works of acclaimed contemporary artists from Japan and all over the world, and is among Japan's most popular art museums. The architecture of the 21st Century Museum is unique and distinguishes it from other museums and buildings around Kanazawa. The museum is comprised of a circular building, 112.5 meters in diameter, with no facade or main entrance. It was designed without a front or back to discourage its patrons from approaching the museum, and consequently its art, from only one direction.
The Seisonkaku Villa (成巽閣, Seisonkaku) was built in the last years of the Edo Period by a Maeda lord for his mother. It is one of the most elegant, remaining samurai villas in Japan. Located in the southeast corner of Kenrokuen, Seisonkaku is a large structure with a number of expansive tatami rooms on two floors. One of its interesting features is the roof which covers its garden viewing deck. It was built without supports that would interrupt the view of the garden.
Nagamachi (長町) was a samurai district located at the foot of the former Kanazawa Castle, where samurai and their families used to reside. The area preserves a historic atmosphere with its remaining samurai residences, earthen walls, private entrance gates, narrow lanes and water canals. One of the main attractions of the district is the centrally located Nomura-ke, a restored samurai residence displaying the lifestyle and artifacts of the era when samurai were prosperous. In contrast is the Shinise Kinenkan Museum, a restored pharmacy displaying the lives of the merchant class which rose in prosperity as the samurai declined.
Omicho Market (近江町市場, Ōmichō Ichiba) has been Kanazawa's largest fresh food market since the Edo Period. Today, it is a busy and colorful network of covered streets lined by about 200 shops and stalls. While most shops specialize in the excellent local seafood and produce, you can also find flowers, clothing, kitchen tools and more on sale. Although the market is most exciting during the morning hours, it also gets quite busy around noon, when tourists and locals arrive to have lunch at restaurants inside the market. It is not unusual for lines to build in front of the popular restaurants, many of which specialize in rice bowls topped with fresh Kanazawa seafood.
From 1583 to the end of the Edo Period, Kanazawa Castle (金沢城, Kanazawajō) was the seat of the powerful Maeda Clan, lords of Kaga, a feudal domain ranking second only to the Tokugawa possesions in terms of size and wealth. The castle burnt down several times over the centuries, and the most recent fires of 1881 were survived only by two storehouses and the Ishikawa-mon Gate. The gate dates from 1788 and faces Kenrokuen. For several decades, Kanazawa University occupied the former castle grounds until the campus was moved to the city's outskirts in the early 1990s. Since then, a project is underway to rebuild the castle's former buildings. In the meantime, most central structures are standing again and make a visit more interesting.
A chaya (茶屋, lit. teahouse) is an exclusive type of restaurant where guests are entertained by geisha who perform song and dance. Kanazawa has three well preserved chaya districts, Higashi Chayagai (Eastern Chaya District), Nishi Chayagai (Western Chaya District) and Kazuemachi. Each of the three districts has its own charms and mix of shops, cafes and chaya restaurants. The Nishi Chaya District (西茶屋街, Nishi Chayagai), is a compact area just a short walk from the Ninja Temple. It is much smaller and quieter than the Higashi Chayagai and has just one attraction open to the public: a museum, the Nishi Chaya Shiryokan, which displays the history of the district and is a meeting place for free tours of the area (Japanese only).
Oyama Shrine (尾山神社, Oyama Jinja) is dedicated to Maeda Toshiie, the first lord of the powerful, local Maeda Clan. The shrine was constructed in 1599 by Toshiie's successor, Maeda Toshinaga on Mount Utatsu. It was later moved to its present location. Oyama Shrine is known for its unusual gate, which was designed by a Dutch architect, using elements of European and Asian religious themes. While the first story displays a mixture of Japanese and Chinese influence, the upper stories once served as a lighthouse and feature a Dutch style, stained glass window.

My husband and I booked a six-hour private tour of Kanazawa with our guide, Jasmine. From our hotel, we walked through Omicho Market on the way to the bus stop for our first site, Myoryuji, the "Ninja Temple," with its hidden staircases and trap doors. From there, Jasmine led us through the city's highlights at a comfortable pace: the Nagamachi Samurai District, where we toured the Nomura family residence and its lovely garden; the beautiful Kenrokuen Garden; and the Higashi Chaya District, with its old wooden teahouses, where I tried matcha for the very first time. For lunch, we stopped at a local mall for Italian pizza, as we hadn't had anything but Japanese cuisine in over a week. Jasmine is also a talented artist, and at the end of lunch drew our portrait in a charming manga style, a keepsake we'll treasure. Her English was excellent, and she was warm, patient, and happy to answer all our questions about local life, food, and customs. Six hours felt like just the right amount of time to see the best of Kanazawa without feeling rushed. We highly recommend Jasmine to anyone visiting Kanazawa!
We enjoyed a wonderful four hour guided tour of Kanazawa today. Yoshi is an educated, knowledgeable guide who knows the history of Kanazawa and several other cities of Japan. We learned a great deal from him and enjoyed his company very much.
We enjoyed an excellent half day tour of Kanazawa with guide Yoshi. We started by visiting the geisha tea house area which was lovely, followed by Kenrouken gardens and Kanazawa Castle. Yoshi was very friendly and knowledgable about the area and the tour was very enjoyable. We would recommend Yoshi to anyone. Thanks Yoshi Neil and Sheryl Buckley.
Yoshi gave us a great tour of the castle, gardens, Geisha area and Samurai neighbourhood. Very informative.
Yoshi was truly amazing! Such a knowledgeable and kind man guiding us through ancient and modern Kanazawa. We had a wonderful day with him and can highly recommend him!
Yoshi is an exceptional guide where he took us to the best market stalls at the fish market where every food we indulged in (including the sea snails and eel liver) were superb. The walking tour of the tea houses (Geisha district) and knowledge of the history of both the precinct and greater Japan was first class. Yoshi is also a kind and caring person and made conversation very easy, including when we wanted to dig into the country’s cultural values and lifestyle
This tour was great! Our guide was YOSHI and he was extremely knowledgeable about the city and it's treasured history. We visited samurai quarters, one of the old geisha districts, Kentucky gardens to name a few places. He was provided a lot of interesting information during our tour, and even some helpful recommendations for after our tour. He inspired me to read up on Maeda San, who was a key player in building the city. YOSHI san was GREAT, highly recommend! Note: you will need an IC card to board the local buses.
We had a fab tour with Yoshi our guide, we visited the tea district then the gardens and castle which were my favourite. Yoshi was very informative , explaining the history and mechanisms of the castle was built and the water system. He was also very helpful with explaining the bus service.
Kanazawa was a beautiful and more intimate city coming from Tokyo beforehand. We loved the time with our tour guide Masa and learning about samurai history and culture, the ninja temple, Geisha districts, and the food market. Masa was knowledgeable on everything, plus given the heat and our kids, she easily pivoted from walking to bus rides to help us see as much as possible without tiring. The entire family really enjoyed it and I highly recommend a tour when visiting. It felt like a more classic piece of Japan and we ended our visit with authentic kimono rentals (which Masa joined for fun and helped with translation) and stayed at a beautiful Ryokan. It was absolutely lovely!
This was a fantastic experience made all the better by our lovely guide Yoshi. He was friendly, pleasant, funny and very knowledgeable. We thoroughly enjoyed the whole visit
Our tour of Kanazawa was fantastic. Our Tour Guide Gucci met us at the Kanazawa Station which was an amazing place to start what was to be a wonderful 4 hour Private Tour. Gucci showed us around the 6th most beautiful Train Stations in the world and from there we went to the Geisha, Gold Leaf and Samuri District. Just such an amazing experience which included Gold Leaf Ice Cream (a must have). Very pretty area of the city. The gardens were in full bloom of some spectacular Cherry Blossoms. Just a beautiful day from start to finish. Thank you Gucci for an amazing day. David-san and Kerrie-san
Went on a morning tour of Kanazawa with Ms. Taka (Takako Aoki) in the lovely June weather. Perfect introduction to Kenrokuen gardens and the samurai district for first time visitors. The tour can be modified on request depending on what you need to see. Taka was very patient with our older children and we all learned a lot. The tour was bundled with a geisha experience, and Taka delivered us to that performance on time. Highly recommended!
Toshi was a great guide. Had the perfect itinerary already worked out but totally agreeable to change anything. Very informative on the history of the castle etc and showed how water was brought from below to form all the beautiful lakes. Lovely tour!
We booked the 4 hour guided tour and we had a perfect afternoon with Yoshi! We visited the castle, gardens and samurai district. He is very knowledgeable about all aspects of Kanazawa and his timing and delivery of info was excellent. He was very warm and welcoming - and tailored our tour to what we discussed via email in advance. Thank you Yoshi for all your expertise! You made us want to come back to revisit Kanazawa on future trips! (Maybe when that palace is finally finished!). Arigatou gozaimasu
We had a wonderful time in Kanazawa with our guide, Shoten Sasaki. In 5 hours we covered Nagamachi, the samurai quarter; Lunch at Omicho Market; Oyama Shrine; Gyokusen'inmaru Garden; Kanazawa Castle; and Kenrokuen Gardens. Sho shared detailed knowledge at every stop, was kind and really focused on our having the best experience. We enjoyed our time in Kanazawa and highly recommend Sho for touring Kanazawa!
Yoshi was a wonderful guide. He took us to the places we wanted to see and recommended others. He answered more questions and filled us in on more things than youi could ever get on a group tour. I reccomend this as the best way to see the city.
Our Guide Hideharu Yoshino was excellent and very knowledgeable. His English was very good. Next time we would take a 6hr tour if possible because there is so much to see.
It was my family’s first time in Kanazawa, and we began our first full day in Kanazawa with a 4-hour tour with Yoshi-san. He took us to Kanazawa Castle, Kenroku-en, and Higashin Chaya District. During our time with him, Yoshi-san built a story about the history of Kanazawa and its everlasting effects on today’s culture and society. He was knowledgeable, explaining in detail about each location we visited and thoughtfully answering any of our question. It was a pleasure spending our afternoon with Yoshi-san, and I would highly recommend him as a tour guide.
Informative and friendly full of interesting facts really enjoyable
Ms. Toshiko, Toshiko-san is a high level guide in Kanazawa area. She gave me a very well organized three hour tour of the samurai district in Kanazawa as well as the geisha district. She offered detailed description of the visited sites including their historical background. I was also very impressed and grateful for her readiness to answer my additional specific questions in our subsequent email exchanges. Her background seems to be very broad and deep. While I am a bit embarrassed to even mention this her English is superb. I recommend her highly.
Asa was an amazing guide. In a humble, true to Japan, respectful way she took great pride in sharing the gems of Kanazawa with us
Kanazawa is a wonderful experience. The Gardens were spectacular, very calming and spiritual. The castle alongside equally as impressive. Touring the Geisha district gave us the closest Japanese experience yet.
Akiko was wonder! We had three generations, grandma, mom and dad and two boys ages 9 and 12. She met us at the cruise terminal and we went by bus to the train station. We were going to take public transportation but opted for a mini van for three hours that cost an extra $130. Well worth the expense as we only had three ours in Kanazawa. We went to the Samarai Shrine, which was fantastic, everyone enjoyed it. Akiko accommodated us in every way, we even had our gold leaf ice cream- which is a must!
Jasmine was very knowledgeable and we learnt a lot. She arranged to meet us at our hotel and booked a tea ceremony for us. Well worth having a guide to make the most of your time in Kanazawa. Highly recommend.
I would highly recommend Tomoko, she understands all aspects of the city and ensured we had a fantastic experience.
Our guide, Hideharu Yoshino, was absolutely great! We had a 4 hour private tour with Yoshi in Kanazawa. Lots of knowledge and seen beautiful places.
Amazing tour with Jasmine! She give us a lot of great information about the sites that we visit. We did learn a lot ! Thanks
Sho showed us a personalised tour in Kanazawa. We had a great lunch. He gave s lot of information about the city and the way people lived.
Yoshi is a great guide, so helpful and easy to understand. Without him, we could not have navigated the various districts with the historical insights he provided. He picked out a great place for lunch by the garden, helped us order while regaling us with stories of city.
Tomoko was our Guide for our day trip visiting Kanazawa and highly recommended! We found her to be kind, informative and utterly passionate in sharing of her home village. She met us at the Train Station, and from there we embarked on a lovely day filled with beautiful sights; gorgeous gardens, architectural designs, and crafts galore. We visited historic geisha & samurai districts, imagining ourselves transported back in time courtesy of her exceptional narratives, and together with her scrapbook of photos and artistic images, lent a deeper understanding on the rich impact to the culture of Japan of this quaint hidden gem. Our time with Tomoko actually felt like an excursion with a family friend. We found her spirited and engaging - making her a wonderful ambassador for Kanazawa.
We had a great day with Yoshi. He was incredibly knowledgeable about all aspects of not only Kanazawa but all of Japan. We took public transport like locals and visited many interesting places. We learnt all about the Geisha and tea culture. A beautiful garden was our next stop along with a fascinating castle complex. Yoshi explained all of the history here and also interesting aspects of the architecture. Our last stop was the samurai district which was also very interesting. All in all a very comprehensive visit for just one day. Thank you Yoshi!
Excellent experience with our guide Tomoko. She is very knowledgeable and was very attentive to my requests for exploring different sites in Kanazawa.
Masa was a wonderful guide. She checked in to gauge wanted to see and also whether we needed a break during the 4 hour walking tour. She is a local of Kanazawa and very knowledgeable. She took us to many points of interest and her pride in her city is evident. It was gorgeous to see her genuine excitement when we discovered that the plum trees had blossomed. She knew all the tricks - the roads to take to avoid walking up steep hills! Highly recommended
Our 4hr walking tour with our guide Yoshi was fantastic. Despite the very cold weather we were able to cover Kenrokuen Garden, Kanazawa Castle & the Samurai district. Yoshi was very relaxed & provided a great background to the history of the area. We loved it!
Yumi is an incredible guide. Please make sure you ask for her. For starters, our tour was highly customizable. We already had our top 3 things we wanted to see in Kanazawa and Yumi was able to adapt the entire tour to prioritize those. Yumi is super knowledgeable about Japanese history and culture. My friend and I would point out random things during our tour and ask "what's that?". To our surprise, Yumi always had a deep explanation ready. We learned a ton. As a fun fact, Yumi is fluent in three languages (Japanese, English, Portuguese), and also knows a bit of Spanish. She's a well-read person, so you'll always have something interesting to talk about with her while walking the streets of Kanazawa.
Our family of 4 (two young adult children) loved this tour. Our guide, Yoshi, was tremendous -- he was knowledgeable, friendly and helpful, and his English was terrific. He took us through the Kenrokuen Garden, Kanzawa Castle and the Samurai district. There is an awful lot we would have missed if we toured on our own. We would take this tour again in a heartbeat and strongly recommend it. If you choose this tour, be mindful that it is mostly outside and be prepared for rain. Also, Kanazawa Castle is shoe-free, and it is not heated. An extra pair of socks would have been helpful.
Yumi is friendly and knowledgeable. We booked this tour our first day in Kanazawa of a 4 day stay. My personal favorite spots on the tour were the samurai district and the beautiful Kenrokuen garden. We had a tea ceremony later in the day. Yumi was mindful of time and took us to a delicious Ramen restaurant for lunch before going to the tea ceremony. Most tours in Kanazawa use the bus system which is very efficient. This tour helped orient us so we felt comfortable using transit system the rest of our stay. Yumi is wonderful. Book her for your Kanazawa tour.
Yumiko-san was an excellent guide for Kanazawa. She is very knowledgeable and her English is excellent. Highly recommend!
Our guide Toshis was excellent! Knowledgeable, friendly & engaging. He started us off at the Kanazawa castle complex. He explained the castle's history over the many centuries and rulers. We then went to the castle garden and took in its understated beauty. We ended up in the old Samurai neighborhood and learned about their customs, and visited one of their houses. Great tour & guide; I would recommend him & the tour.
Terrific way to get to know this wonderful city with a local. It was also good having a private guide because we made adjustments which accommodated the things we wanted to see , so we saw the samurai district and the older part of town and the big markets I’d kindly recommend it.
A delightful time with Yumi as she guided as through the Samurai and Geisha districts. She was so patient in answering all our questions. By using the public bus, we were able to leisurely cover the Samurai district, visit the ninja temple and stroll thru the geisha districts. No better way to start our stay in Kanazawa.
Yumi is a knowledgeable guide. She is a retired teacher and brings the educational prowess to the tour. Her English is very good and she has a true appreciation for a Kanazawa and its environs. I would absolutely recommend her for this tour.
An excellent guided tour of the Oyama shrine, castle and garden, samurai houses (including simple tea ceremony) and geisha entertainment house. We were continually surprised by the beauty of the places we saw. Our guide spoke excellent English and took us to places that we would have struggled to find ourselves.
Wonderful tour with Yumi to the samurai and geisha districts. Learned much about these people. Loved the Nomura samurai home and garden and the intriguing Ninja temple. Took the bus between districts. Time well spent.
Our guide was personable, experienced, knowledgeable and friendly. She was very accommodating as well. Couldn’t ask for anything more.
Yoshi is a knowledgeable and interesting guide. We were able to choose the places we wanted to visit and he made sure that we spent time at each one. He explained the history of Japan and Kanazawa. We really enjoyed our tour with Yoshi.
Yoshi was the best guide to help you enjoy Kanazawa history. Kenrouken Garden in Fall was a highlight of our trip! Yoshi was kind enough to take pictures of the 4 of us!
Our tour with Sachi was amazing. She was friendly and knowledgeable. We saw lots of different places like museums, gardens and the castle. The added information of our guide and the route made it well worth doing.
Very interisting tour! Jasmine is a very professional and passionate guide that gave as a great explanation Japenese culture and tradition by showing us the Kanazawa castle and geisha neighbourhoods. We enjoyed a lot this tour!
