Hida Folk Village (Hida no Sato) is an open-air museum exhibiting over 30 traditional houses from the Hida region, the mountainous district of Gifu Prefecture around Takayama. The houses were built during the Edo Period (1603–1867) and were relocated from their original locations to create the museum in 1971. In a village-like atmosphere, the museum features buildings such as the former village head's house, logging huts, storehouses, and a number of gassho-zukuri farmhouses. These massive farmhouses are named after their steep thatched roofs, which resemble a pair of hands joined in prayer ("gassho"). They were moved here from nearby Shirakawago, where gassho-zukuri houses are the reason for the region's World Heritage status.
Because of its valuable timber resources, the Hida Region around Takayama was put under direct control of the Tokugawa Shogunate in 1692. The Takayama Jinya served as the local government office, headed by officials dispatched from Edo (present-day Tokyo). The building complex was in official use until 1969 and is now open to the public as a museum. It includes various nicely maintained tatami mat rooms that once served as offices, conference rooms, guest rooms, and residential spaces. There is also an interesting interrogation room. Beside the main building stands a large storehouse, built in the 1600s. Known as the biggest traditional rice storehouse in Japan, it now functions as a museum, showcasing the belongings and official documents of past feudal lords, old maps of the Hida Region, and historic town plans.
Kamisannomachi, area is popular for its charming ambiance, with narrow streets lined with willow trees and iconic structures like latticed windows and wooden facades. Many of the shops sell local crafts, sweets, and other regional specialties, including Hida beef and sake.
Takayama Betsuin Shorenji Temple, around a five-minute stroll from JR Takayama Station, is a notable Buddhist temple in Takayama. Its notorious, three-celebrated pagoda was developed in 1820. A Buddhist statue remembered to have been made in the Heian time frame is revered in the fundamental structure. Make certain to pay heed to the tremendous gingko tree on the grounds. It is more than 1,260 years old.

Malik was a wonderful driver and guide! Touring both Takayama’s historic Sanmachi Suji district and UNESCO-listed Shirakawa-go in a single day can feel rushed on public transport, but Malik made it smooth and totally stress-free. He took us to the Ogimachi Castle Observation Deck for incredible panoramic fall foliage views over the village. Having a high-quality local lunch included saved us so much time. Highly recommend Malik for anyone seeking a private charter
An exceptional, hassle-free way to explore Gifu’s highlights. Having a private charter allowed us to skip train schedules, dodge tour bus crowds, and enjoy a relaxed pace throughout the day. Takayama Old Town: Zedi led us through the preserved Edo-period streets, highlighting local history, craftsmanship, and the best street food (especially the Hida beef skewers). Shirakawa-go: Visiting the UNESCO thatched-roof village was the highlight. Zedi took us to the top scenic viewpoints for perfect photos and shared fascinating insight into local traditions. Zedi was punctual, highly knowledgeable, friendly, and adapted the itinerary smoothly to our rhythm.
We had a wonderful private day tour to Shirakawago and Takayama. Khan was an excellent guide. He was a good driver and shared lots of insightful information. He was very professional and accommodating. We had such a good time shopping and eating in Takayama that I'm glad we opted to stay there longer instead of going to another town. We appreciated all of his recommendations, especially the food options.
A fantastic tour with Malik. The vehicle was clean and comfortable, the timing was excellent, and everything ran smoothly from pickup to drop-off. Both destinations were beautiful, and Malik’s warm personality made the day even better. Highly recommended!
Fantastic private tour of Shirakawa-go and Takayama with Malik. He was friendly, punctual, and professional, making the entire day comfortable and enjoyable. Highly recommended!
We had a wonderful one-day private tour to Shirakawa-go and Takayama with Malik. He was professional, friendly, punctual, and very knowledgeable about the area. The vehicle was clean and comfortable, and the entire journey was well organized. Malik gave us enough time to explore each location and made the experience relaxing and enjoyable. We highly recommend this tour and Malik to anyone visiting Japan!
We had an amazing one-day private charter tour to Shirakawa-go and Takayama with Khan. From the beginning, he was punctual, professional, and very friendly. The vehicle was clean, comfortable, and the entire journey was smooth. Khan shared interesting information about the places we visited while also giving us enough free time to explore at our own pace. Shirakawa-go was absolutely beautiful, and Takayama’s Old Town was charming with plenty of time for sightseeing and lunch. He was patient, accommodating, and made sure we were comfortable throughout the day. We never felt rushed, and the itinerary was well organized. We highly recommend this private tour to anyone looking for a stress-free and enjoyable way to visit Shirakawa-go and Takayama. Thank you, Khan, for making our trip so memorable!
I booked a guided tour on purpose and did not prepare the tour. I visited the Hida village on my own after having been shown the entrance and aboiut two sentences of explanation that I had received. We went to Takayama. Next I was dropped of in the center one street behind the most famous street and told to be back 1h30 later, including lunch. When I returned, I was told we were now going to Shirakawa-go. I asked about the other stops in Takayama and was asked if I did not visit them. There was a map at the entrance to the quarter that showed were they were. I answered that it would have been helpful if he had told me before. I asked if he knew that I had booked a guided tour. He said yes, but that was only for Shirakawa-go. We finally drove to one more place in Takayama, then we continued to Shirakawa-go. There the guidance was to get me a tourist map and give me about 5 minutes of explanation concerning the village, then I was on my own again. I had taken a taxi tour two days before and received pretty much the same amount of information. This was a rip off, certainly not a guided tour by a knowledgeable guide. For half the price, I could have taken a taxi tour which I would advise everybody to do.
Excellent private tour experience! Shirakawa-go was stunning, and Takayama’s old town was full of charm and history. Khan was punctual, professional, and shared many interesting insights throughout the day. The vehicle was comfortable, and the itinerary was perfectly paced. A great way to see some of Japan’s most beautiful destinations in a single day.
We had a wonderful day on the Shirakawa-go & Takayama Private Charter Tour with Maaz. He spoke excellent English, was incredibly enthusiastic, and made the day both enjoyable and informative. What stood out most was how personable and attentive he was, always making sure we were comfortable and focusing on the things that interested us most. The highlight for us was Takayama Old Town, which was full of charm, history, and interesting shops. There was so much to see that we could easily have spent half a day there alone. We also thoroughly enjoyed visiting Hida no Sato Folk Village, which offered a fascinating glimpse into traditional rural life and was a beautiful place to explore. Overall, Maaz's friendly personality and genuine enthusiasm made for a fantastic day. Highly recommended.
We had an excellent private tour to Shirakawa-go and Takayama. The vehicle was comfortable, the itinerary was well organized, and we had plenty of time to explore both destinations at our own pace. Our guide was friendly, professional, and knowledgeable, making the day enjoyable and stress-free. Highly recommended for anyone looking to experience the beauty and culture of this region!
Very nice day. Would do it again.☺️
Awesome trip and our guide Mois did an amazing job. Thank you very much for this memorable day.
We had an amazing day and our guide Moiz was really nice and convenient, thanks
Driver was not a guide. Expensive booking agency Viator. Saw the places but no commentary English speaking (from Pakistan) but not Japanese so no in depth knowledge. Very disappointing and absolutely not worth the money. Vehicle had dark tinted windows so impossible to see out from back seat. Absolutely worthless. Skip booking with Viator. Exact same trip booked with Get your guide $110 less expensive Likely not go with smile tours again due to not providing the service described.
Not what we have expected from Viator. The van had dark film on the back seat windows , so dark that we couldn’t see out and it produced distorted views. The driver was just a driver and not a guide. He was a 21 year old from Pakistan on a one year visa. He was difficult to understand and had only basic knowledge of the area . He could tell us little about the areas we drove through. He didn’t provide commentary on the areas we drove through!! Viator charges $100. More than other providers for the same trip. This was not a guided tour but an expensive van ride. The driver (Abdul) asked whom we booked the tour with. When we said Viator charges $100 more; we asked if HE got more than with other booking agents and he said no. So we really don’t understand what your agency had to offer that would make it worth $100 more than other agencies. When I asked Abdul about the extra 100 dollars more he said all Americans are rich and 100 dollars is nothing. We were quite insulted. At for the places we went : Shirakago, there were 72 buses in the parking lot and the path to the town was crowded. The town itself was interesting but too many milling people. Other parts of the tour were less crowded. We resent paying $100. For this tour. On a previous tour we had a woman from Japan, a teacher who spoke excellent English and was well versed in Japanese history and culture. It was an excellent experience and one of the reasons we booked again with Viator. The name of this tour operator was “Smiles tours “ I did not smile. I think Viator did not provide the service they describe! Beware
We got out of the city to see the countryside and 2 towns. Beautiful scenery along the way. It was a long ride.
Perfect day, you can see 2 distance places in one day. Shirakawo go, nice walk and best view from observatory desk. Takayama, old town and very special Takayma Jinya day
This was a wonderful and relaxed experience. Our guide Moiz was excellent and helpful. We particularly enjoyed the museum at Takayama and the Hida Folk Village - make sure you leave enough time! We are a great meal at Mensho Junsai which catered for vegetarians and chestnut ice-cream at Meet Tree.
Very well organised day of sightseeing at the perfect time of year for peak cherry blossoms!
There is little to no guiding on this tour. It is only a driver transporting you to the designated sites. And his English was marginal; difficult to understand his Pakistani accent.
Our driver, Ali, was excellent and gave us good tips as to what to see. Unfortunately the weather was not great and slightly dampened what was still an interesting and enjoyable day.
The experience was truly excellent. Our driver, Ali, was extremely punctual, kind, and helpful. He explained in detail what to see and carefully instructed us on the main points of interest to visit. It's an experience I recommend to anyone who has little time and wants to tour these fantastic sites.
We had a great time visiting the three sites on this private tour. I was looking for a compact tour from Kanzawa to try to pack in a day a few things and this was perfect. The guide was informative but not pushy and let us do our thing when we wanted to. They were also accommodating with the start and end times to meet our further travels.
We wanted a personal driver to take us on a day trip from Kanazawa. We are retired friends and were traveling as a group of four. The car was comfortable and air conditioned. Bottled water was a nice touch. Moiz, our driver was communicative, prompt, kind and courteous. He guided us through Shirakawago and dropped us off to explore other points of interest listed on the itinerary. He picked us up promptly at agreed upon pickup points. Tip: Having access to texting is necessary. We never felt rushed. We appreciated that, Moiz.
Excelent trip to shirakawa the van is really comfortable and our guide was really funny and so kind. It’s definitely a trip you must not skip
Malik was a nice guy and friendly. He was in time. What we didn’t like is that from time to time he was driving too fast and he was on the phone with his manager, okay no problem, but we didn’t like that he didn’t call handsfree ;-(. Halfway they had to switch the tour guide, because of an emergency case. Okay this is force majeur. The new guy did not introduce himself and I had to ask his name. We noticed he was not really in the mood to do the tour. After we went to the open air museum, he was asking us what was next spot to go to and what the name of the temple was. He didn’t know the way and was driving with his mobile in his hand and checking the mobile for navigation. We didn’t like it at all. The manager should be more strict and forbid them to drive like this. After this it was on the program to go to the “Jinya house”, but he said he was going to the B&B to drop us there. It was 3.25 p.m. So the program stopped way too early. The driver looked tired and was not really interested. We skipped the last part ourselves (to see the streets of the old part of Takayama, because our B&B was located there).
This was the first time I took a tour and never made it to the destination (shirikawa-go). We had rearranged the trip because the vendor had a conflict. We were pressured to accept the new date on a short timeline. We did so and then day of we never made it to shirikawa-go because we were behind on timing. With that said, we never were warned of that being a consequence and the entire experience was lackluster.
Moiz was a very good tour guide. It was nice being able to set our own pace at the different stops. I would recommend this tour.
We thoroughly enjoyed our day tour to Shirakawa-go and Takayama. Our guide Moiz was very pleasant and knowledgeable. The itinerary is well structured to make the most of visiting this lovely village and town. Well worth the day trip from Kanazawa. Can highly recommend.
This private charter to Shirakawa-go and Takayama was incredible. No stress about trains or buses — just a seamless, beautiful day through the countryside. Abdul was an amazing guide. Super knowledgeable about the history and culture, great recommendations for food and photo spots, and genuinely fun to spend the day with. He brought the thatched-roof villages of Shirakawa-go to life and knew all the best streets in Takayama’s old town. Book this tour and hope you get Abdul. Highly recommend.
We travelled from Kanazawa to experience the winter scenes in Shirakawa-go. Highly recommend this tour - very comfortable and our tour guide Moazzam could not be more helpful. We visited many of the museums in Shirakawa- go including the Wada house and Nagasa house as well as the Myozenji museum and temple. It was a superb introduction to this fascinating and beautiful area. We were so lucky to see it on a sunny winters day. The old town in Takayama was a great stop for lunch and souvenir shopping and we finished off at Hida-no- Sato, Thank you very much Moazzam for this super day.
Very nice and friendly guide - Moiz -, with good knowlwdge of the places we visited. Made us feel great. And wonderful villages - Shirakawa-go and Takayama. Definitely worth it.
Seeing Shriakawa-go covered in snow was on my bucket list. We had a great experience and everything went well and as planned. Mozzam was very knowledges and drove in snowy winter conditions really carefully and safely. The rest of the tour was wonderful as well.
This is the best place that i ever visited. Especially for the food and sight seeing in tokayama and shirakawago, there so many convenience store with the local product. One day tour with one day trip is the best way how to get there. The driver was very good driving. Im very enjoy the moment and the trip was so fun.
Good service, we like the driver’s patience. Even I was late, he extended the time for us to explore. Thank you so much! 10/10 experience
This trip was super amazing! The tour guide was super helpful and timely. We got extra time and the service was wonderful. Would book again.
Hamza was a great driver and guide, very comfortable ride even despite how busy it was at the sites. Highly recommend.
We enjoyed our one day sightseeing trip very much! Moiz was a nice tourguide who gave us lots of information about the place we visited and created a very nice atmosphere. We fully confirm that it’s worth the price for the full day tour. Thank you!
Our tour to shirakawa-go & Takayama was an incredible historical experience. Moiz, our tour guide and driver, was very knowledgeable, gave us a great tour and plenty of free time. He also took pictures of our family. Amazing day+
We had a wonderful experience on the 1-day private charter tour to Shirakawa-go and Takayama with guide Malik. He was professional, friendly, and very knowledgeable, making the day smooth and enjoyable. The itinerary was well paced, and the flexibility of a private tour made the experience even better. Highly recommended!
Great trip. Recommended. Our driver, Moazzam, was patient and would explain to us useful info about the places. We enjoyed the trip!
Our driver Moazzam was very professional and the ride was very comfortable We were able to enjoy Shirakawago gou and Takayama I will definitely recommend smile tour with Moazzam
Our one-day tour to Shirakawa-go and Takayama was wonderful. We were fortunate to see the area with snowfall on the ground, which added to its beauty. The towns provide a glimpse into the area’s history, the people were welcoming, and the food was delicious. Our guide, Ali, was very kind and flexible with our schedule.
Our private tour through Shirakawa-go and Takayama with Moiz was an excellent experience from start to finish. He was incredibly patient, attentive, and always ready to help with anything we needed throughout the day.
Our driver/guide, Moazzam, was a good fellow. He tried to give us what he knew about the places but was unprepared to dive deeper into the experience. I think he was thrown off when he found out it was our 2nd time there so our questions and inquiries were more directed. In terms of service, he is a good and reliable driver. Very engaging and really made sure that we were comfortable. For first time visitors, highly suggest this option since you'll have your own time/schedule/pace for the experience (which we wanted since our first time was in a rush). These two places are really worth seeing and the views are remarkable.
Moazzam did a fantastic job giving me and my family a tour of Shirikawa-go and Takayama. He was very friendly and knowledgeable, and we had a great time. He was also very friendly and helpful with our 2 yr old, helping us with strollers and car seats. And he was very flexible with the tour to accommodate our needs.l and showed great patience. Thanks for everything!
Logistics of the tour was made easy by efficient transport to the main attractions. Pick-up was at the hotel we were staying at and drop off at the hotel we were going to.
This is a highly recommended tour, especially when you are already in Kanazawa. We booked this trip for the 19th of November via Viator. There seemed to be a glitch in the system, since we received a message from the operator that that day was fully booked. We were asked if we could instead take the next day, which we agreed to do. It was a lovely day. Our guide/driver Ali is calm and informative. He patiently answered our questions. He took us first to Shirakawa go where he showed us around and took us to the observation spot where we could see the whole village. It was a lovely day for a little hike up to the observation spot, and also see the old houses up close. We were then dropped off at Takayama, by the old district. Before dropping us off, Ali recommended food to eat, and which restaurant to go to when every restaurant is fully booked. This was a good stop to have lunch and take photos of old houses (with less crowds than in Kyoto). After 2 hours, we were then taken to Hida no Sato, which is my favorite. While there, Ali informed us that he had to help a colleague who had his car broken down, and that he would be a bit late tp pick us up. We did not mind because we had more time to explore the area and see the souvenir store. We asked Ali if he could drop us off to the train station closest our next hotel. When he found out we had to walk 16 minutes from the station to the hotel, he was concerned and offered to drive us to the hotel. It was very thoughtful of him.🥹 We highly recommend this tour. I love the comfort of sitting in a car and being driven to the main attractions without worries. And the extra service of being driven from the hotel, and being dropped of to the next hotel is a luxury. This is not something one can have with a bus tour. Just learn from our mistake: book earlier than the day before. Shirakawago is a popular destination and can be fully booked easily.🙂 Thank you very much for this experience, Ali.😊
