We had a very enjoyable private tour with Mandla. He was friendly, knowledgeable, and gave us great insight into Soweto and its history. We never felt rushed, and the five hours flew by. One thing to be aware of is that this tour does not include entrance fees to attractions like the Apartheid Museum or Mandela House, so you’ll want to budget for those separately. Overall, we had a great experience and would happily recommend this tour, especially if you’re looking for a private guide and a more personalized experience.

A first time visit too the Apartheid Museum is sure to bring tears to many as its a rough emotional journey on how man who are made in God's image can mistreat each other as if there are different species. The brutality, the torture, the mercilessness is beyond what words can describe. The driver need not go inside the museum as the place is self-explanatory and leads you from one section to the next logically but you can pay for him to go in with you should you so wish otherwise he'll be waiting by the car till you're done. NB: Closed Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
Soweto is South Africa's largest township and is hometown to one of the world's greatest leaders ever- Nelson Mandela! There's so much history to be learnt here and very emotional indeed. But over the years a lot has changed and the township is becoming more cosmopolitan though the slums are still to be found in certain areas. Driver will highlight these as you drive along
Here tourists can see the huge Soweto Cooling Towers which stands out in the skyline of Soweto. Tourists can just enjoy seeing the towers or they may be hands on and get their Adrenalin pumping by jumping from in between the 2 towers 100m down! There's also mountain climbing, scad freefall, Johannesburg city viewing from the top of the towers, etc. Entrance to see the Soweto Tours is free only the activities are paid for.
Your driver will take you to the Hector Pieterson Museum to understand what happened during the 1976 Soweto Uprising by the youth of South Africa who got fed up with the rising racism fuel by Apartheid. Driver need not go inside the museum with you but you can pay for him to go in should you desire his company as museum staff are always helpful to all tourists.
Here you catch up with memories of Mandela as a young boy who was passionate and had strong convictions of what is right and what is not. Driver will typically not join as there are guides inside the house that will show you around the house. You can also buy curios and souvenirs outside Mandela House to carry back home to share the memories with friends and family.

The hotel organised a trip to Soweto including a visit to Nelson Mandela's house museum. Built in 1945, the small single-storey red brick house served as the family home from 1946 to the 1990s. Now a museum it showcases bullet holes, scorch marks original paintings furnishings memorabilia and photographs celebrating Mandela's life. An English-speaking guide provided an informative tour of the exterior and interior. Archbishop Desmond Tutu's house is just over the road making this street the only one in the world where two Nobel Peace Prize winners have lived in close proximity. The surrounding area has become a tourist destination with markets performers and restaurants. We paid R60 per adult entrance fee; taxis take approximately 30-35 minutes from the NH Johannesburg Sandton hotel. Typically takes about 40 - 60 minutes for a guided tour. The small house doesn't take very long to walk around.
We had a great private rides and tours via Sandton Taxi cabs, Jo Berg. We also took their services for pick up from Sudwala and for airport transfers. Very reliable services, safe and our driver throughout was Nkululeko (KO). He was extremely helpful, reliable, knew all routes and tour places. He had knowledge of all areas and places along with history. We really enjoyed touring with Ko via Sandton taxi.
A very amazing experience. Our tour guide Sydney made it a distinguishable trip to us. He was very informative and passionate about the culture and the history of SA. Highly recommended.
Worth doing while in Johannesburg, seeing all the main sights in one day. Our guide was very accommodating and informative
Went on the Soweto tour My driver , thebe was extremely knowledgeable ,easy to understand and very personable Would highly recommend this driver and company
Accompanied our overseas clients. As a local it was my 1st time visiting this location. It's very clean and has a party vibe with all the restaurants easily accessible within walking distance. The guides are amazing definitely worth a visit
This online service misrepresents itself. This is not actually the tour. This is only the car that you book to get to the three locations. We would’ve been better off, ordering an Uber. Also, they did not tell us that the first two locations were closed, would not recommend.
I was a little worried that this would just be a taxi guide, but this wasn’t the case at all. I was so impressed with our guide Nkululeko (& his articulate English) and the way he shared the history made this experience incredible. This is a must do tour to take in the essence of Johannesburg and the core culture.
Best services ever..Linda in Johannesburg, Thebe in Durban, Max in Cape Town. I spent 3 weeks with these guys and I had great time. Especially with Linda. All cars clean, drivers always on time and feeling safe all the time. I recommend their services 💯 %. Christos Mavroudis, Greece
Our driver Nkululeko took us on the most memorable trip we have ever had. We were taken into the heart of the township where we met and spoke to some incredible people who are living in such terrible poverty. We were welcomed by everyone with smiles and the children were adorable and so happy. What an experience. Nkululeko is a credit to your company and have no hesitation in recommending him and your fantastic tour
We, 4 friends, loved this half day tour very much. Our driver/guide Nkululeko from Sandton taxi cabs is very nice, know-legible, and professional. We visited the iconic areas such as Apartheid Museum, Mandala’s house, and had delicious South Africa food before heading to the airport.
Our guide Ku was very nice and knowledgeable. He took great care of us and added value to our experience. The office however was not the best. Communication was poor. I had to run them down to get a response, which was unpleasant. They seemed like I was bothering them, for something I paid for so I did not appreciate that. Ku, our guide, made up for it but I don’t think I will go with this company again. Overall it was great to see the site and meet the people, learn the history and experience it all. I’d definitely do the experience again but probably with a different company.
Trip was amazing. tour guide was professional, lively, entertaining, articulate, and well inform!!!
What a treat. I was very nervous about booking this tour blind on the internet, but tripadvisor and its ratings didn't let us down. Our driver met us at the airport, drove us around Soweto and even Johannesburg and returned us to the airport for our flight home. Our flight arrived late so we missed the museums so our driver arranged for a docent volunteer to meet us on the square for our own personal tour. We nearly cried it was so impactful. Then we stopped for South African food. It was a highlight of our trip.
Nelson Mandela House, Constitution Hill were very intriguing. The tour featured a variety of destinations. Tour guide was informative.
Our driver and guide, Nkhululeko, was excellent. He kept us informed about pickup and was knowledgeable about all aspects of the tour. He was flexible when time became an issue and got us back to the airport early. The tour was as advertised, but one needs more time at each highlight!
This was a fantastic tour giving a real insight into Soweto life. Our guide was Nkululeko who was amazing, made sure we always felt at ease, was friendly and very knowledgeable. We were on a tight schedule (between flights in Johannesburg), we were met at the airport and returned at the agreed time for our onward flight home. Really good use of our free time, would highly recommend this tour.
Today we went on a tour of Soweto. We saw the actual places where people lived. Very humbling. We went to the Sowto Towers, the Nelson Mandela house, Vilikazi Street and Hectar Pieterson memorial where the 1976 Soweto uprising brgan. Several museums were closed still due to COVID. We saw several cultural dancers and we went to lunch at the Soweto Brewing Company in the Ubuntu Kraal which was very fun. Our driver was Nkululeko and we really enjoyed him a lot. Felt very safe and great value for the price.
Mr Sapp contacted us quickly after booking and gave detailed instructions of the process. Thabo was our tour guide and he was very punctual, knowledgeable and friendly. We were very pleased. He went above and beyond to meet our requests and we were able to visit everything on the list and then some. The Apartheid Museum is very in-depth and may take 2 visits to see everything. It is very large. This tour is highly recommended to get an excellent overview of the history of Soweto and apartheid. Be prepared. It will leave you feeling a certain kind of way…
The Apartheid Museum was extraordinary -- could have spent a whole day there. The Hector Pierson monument was an eye-opener, and the African lunch we had in Soweto was delicious. Our guide, Khulekani, was excellent. Two different problems arose -- neither of them his fault -- but in both cases he went above and beyond to resolve matters and make sure we had an outstanding experience.
Thabo was our driver He is really professionnal and punctual He knows a lot about his country The car was nice and get air co. Fair price We had a really good Time, obviously we will choose Sandton Cab & Thabo again when we will come back !
Thambo was an excellent and very knowledgeable tour guide. Mandella’s House, the Hector Pieterspn Museum, the Regina Mundi Church, and Chaf Pozi were all very historically interesting.
Apartheid Museum was closed. Regus Mundi was closed. Mandela House and Hector Pierson were fine. We were home an hour or so early. Not worth the money.
After extensive research via Google and Tripadvisor we found that Sandton Taxi Services offered the tour we were looking for. They were super easy to deal with all via WhatsApp and we only booked 48 hours before our tour began. We received confirmation, drivers name, number and car reg the day before. On the day our driver met us 10 minutes early and instantly out us at ease and made us feel safe and welcome. Nku our driver and guide was friendly, informative and also respectful of when we wanted to read or linger a little longer whilst also politely reminding us of how much we wanted to squeeze in. If you are planning to visit Johannesburg these are the guys to show you around! Also, the team did all of this before we’d even paid and took payment at the very end via card.
This day visit of Johannesburg / Soweto was excellent, and most of it had to do with the high professionalism and kindnbess of our guide Elvis. We first met him at the OR Tambo airport where he was waiting for us, and he knew our flight had been delayed. He took us through the city centre of Jo'burg and showed us the places that mean the most to him, which was very nice. We visited the apartheid museum and Mandela's house and he took us to a wonderful local restaurant in Soweto where we had a delicious meal. After another ride around the city to see the stadium and the Soweto towers, he took us back to the airport in time for our final flight. Overall, communication was made extremely easy with Sandton Taxi cab, and in particular with Elvis - who is very knowledgeable on the history of Jo'burg - , and I would warmly recommend this company to every traveller who is keen to discover Johannesburg. If you are lucky enough to have Elvis as your guide, then you are in for a treat! Also, Elvis was very keen to fully adapt the route of our tour based on the time that we had at our disposal, and based on our own centers of interest. Thank you again Elvis!
My second time here and was as emotional as the first alot of history great tour guide very informative
We were in S.Africa for 2 week. We were skeptical about hiring transportation. We are so glad we did. Bongani transported us from the airport to our hotel. We just instantly clicked with Bongani. We hired him for 2 tours on the same day. We spent 12 hours with Bongani covering Joburg, Soweto and Ledisi Cultural Experience. Bongani is VERY knowledgeable about the history and sights of Joburg area. Through our conversations....he would adjust and say I think you would love to see this or that. I honestly don't think we would have had this experience had we not had Bongani as our driver. He was prompt, safe driver and we totally forgot we were actually strangers. It was as if he was part of our trip. We started out with a driver and ended up with a dear friend for life. If you are in S.Africa and need a driver---you need to BOOK Bongani!! We are a military couple and my husband instincts from trainings makes him guarded about most things. He was not guarded the entire time with Bongani. By the way we visited other countries on this trip and hired drivers and the experience was not the same. Also, I only read reviews - normally do not post but I had to post about Bongani!
I researched many tours to Soweto before I chose this one. I liked that it is a private tour at a great price! The chauffeur/guide was Elvis Dube. He picked me up at my hotel. I had to change the pick up place the day before and it was no problem at all! He was very nice and informed. The day turned out a bit different than usual I think, because that day was Heritage Day in South Africa. Vilakazi Street was very busy with celebrations on every corner, dancing and singing. Elvis didn't mind stopping each time I wanted to watch a street performer. He extended the tour by a half hour which turned into an hour at no extra charge! Awesome!! Thanks!! Highly recomment this company!
What an experience! Live & love...Soweto! Pleasant welcoming people, beautiful place, electric and vibrant culture. What a place.
Nku was punctual, well informed, pleasant and helpful. He made sure we are safe and comfortable. I highly recommend him to future visitors.

Great day for the whole family. Truly discovering a unique place.

What a Top Day!!! We have seen everything we wanted to see and more. Nkululeko is a great guide. He's told me a lot. Afterwards I also received pictures of him. ABSOLUTELY RECOMMENDED!!!
A museum to visit, imperatively, to try to understand this terrible history of apartheid, decades of struggles, already the visit begins with your ticket "white" or "non-white" each separates for a small course of explanations and an immersion begins of what was the regime of racial segregation in South Africa...and Nelson Mandela, released after 27 years spent in prison .., that horrors, a system of oppressions, domination, institutionalized by laws, policies and above all discrimination, we all emerged upset.
Max fue muy amable, nos explicó y contestó a todo lo que le preguntamos, pero me molestó tener que pagar la entrada en cada sitio y además a cada guía que nos hacía la explicación, al señor del parking, y que todos nos pidieran dinero por todas partes.
Our guide Moses was not only extremely knowledgeable about Soweto, Johannesburg and South Africa, both historically and in terms of current politics, he also gave us indispensable tips for the entire 3-week tour of South Africa. Thank you again, dear Moses.
Visit in private tour of Mandela's house is a super interesting tour that reminds us to build it, knowing his life history and how he was a distinguished man. To chill!!! Amazing energy!!!
