Our tour guide Shane Gouldie was the best. He is knowledgeable in all subject matter and made the tour that much more interesting. Aside from that, he is a very friendly and personable.

Itinerary
Vilakazi Street is where Nelson Mandela and Bishop Tutu Houses are. There is also a number of restaurants. we drive through the area giving you an idea of what makes Soweto tick.
During our drive to Soweto we will give you a good general idea of the township including history and interesting facts. We will also include information on Mandela House, shanty towns and security. We will drop you at the Mandela house in Soweto, this is our first stop. You then pay your entry fee and a guide will accompany you on the tour. The cost of the tour is R 100. When you are finished we will go to the next stop in Vilakazi street.
We take you into the township for a ride to see the different areas
NB THE MUSEUM IS ONLY OPEN WEDNESDAY TO SUNDAY . This is an amazing visit and something all travelers should experience. It gives you a very good idea what South Africa was before independence. We allow you a max of 3 hours to walk through the museum. The cost is R 150. We will give you a run down on what you can expect to experience on our drive from Soweto. This is the most popular tourist attraction in Johannesburg.
One of my favourite tours. Visit the prison that Mandela, Ghandi and many famous politicians spent doing jail time. You also see the Old Fort, Ladies Prison and the new Constitutional Court. It’s a sad history of how badly people where treated and hopefully with our new constitution this will not happen again. Cost is R 90 per person
A drive pass the central business district that has been vocated by most big business head offices and our stock market. We also pass many of the huge gold mine dumps and Anglo American Gold head offices.
In 1976 the youth protested in Soweto. Hector Pieterson was killed by a rubber bullet shot by the police into the crowd. This extra is a memorial to this young child .
Desmond Tutu house visit. We see two Nobel peace prize winners houses on this famous road . Villakazi street

I had a great half-day private tour with Shane, visiting Mandela House, Soweto, the Apartheid Museum and the Constitutional Court. Shane was knowledgeable, friendly and passionate about South Africa’s history. He shared stories and context throughout the visit, making the experience both interesting and meaningful. I was on my own, and he made me feel very comfortable throughout. Highly recommend!
Shane was an informative and accommodating tour guide. He was flexible with our pick up time and made sure we were back at the airport with plenty of time to spare for our flight home that night. He is very passionate and knowledgeable and I would highly recommend this tour.
The Apartheid museum was a very well curated museum with a lot of information and different mediums used to transmit the tumultuous times. Definitely good to have 2 hours odd on the private trip to slowly read through. The travel was safe and Shane was prompt and helpful
A must do when visting Jo'burg. Make sure you have lunch at Vilakazi St. We loved this tour, Shane's the perfect guide, very accommodating and a wealth of knowledge about all things South African. If we had had more time we would have done all of Shane's tours , a fantastic day thanks mate
Shane is such a wonderful and generous guy with a lot of knowledge. It was great having a 1:1 tour and visiting the sites at our leisure . Highly recommend Shane for an intimate tour of Soweto, Mandela house, apartheid museum and Constitutional Hill .
Shane was very informative and gave us a very good potted history into South Africa. The Apartheid and Mandela museum were excellent. The homes in Soweto were brick cottages, vastly different from shanty towns we thought
Thank you Shane for a solid introduction to Johannesburg and South Africa. We learnt about Soweto, Apartheid, the Constitution and Justice system, Mandela and other key contributors, and so many things about this complex mixed society. A keen sportsman, Shane stopped at FNB stadium (the calabash) when he noted our interest—the flexibility of a private tour— and dropped us at Sandton with a great lunch recommendation. Great all round tour in a few hours!
We really enjoyed our day with Shane. He was extremely friendly, engaging, and knowledgeable about the role of apartheid in the development of South African society. Unfortunately, we were unable to visit the Apartheid Museum (as it was closed due to Good Friday) but he made up for it by taking us to Lesedi Cultural Village and the Cradle of Humankind. We truly enjoyed our time with him and it was a perfect introduction to South Africa.
This was just South African born Shane, myself and my husband. Shane was very knowledgeable personable and accumulating. We went early to Mandela's house so we're the only ones there and had a lovely tour guide to ourselves. The apartheid museum is well worth a visit, (you could choose how long you stay there) as was Melrose Arch where we ended our tour. It was good to get a realistic view of Soweto which wasn't as I thought it would be. I would strongly recommend this tour.
Shane was an excellent guide. We learned so much about the history, the government, the economy and more on our tour with him. He is a delightful person and we enjoyed our time with him very much!
Shane was a great host, answering our questions and guiding us throughout the tour. In just half a day, we saw so much while avoiding crowds and traffic. Apartheid Museum is a must visit. Thank you Shane!
We had a brilliant time on our tour and seen a lot of sights in a short period of time. Our guide, Shane, was very knowledgeable and took us to the sights at the right times to avoid any queues. Shane took photos of us at the various sights so we didn’t have to at the time and gave us a great restaurant recommendation. As first time visitors to Johannesburg, we greatly appreciated Shane’s knowledge of the area and felt very safe on the trip. We learned so much about South African history and would highly recommend this tour!
Interesting half-day tour with Shane through the Soweto neighborhood and the Mandela house. The visit to the Apartheid Museum was interesting and overwhelming. The visit to the Constitutional Court was very interesting. Shane gave us a lot of background information about South Africa and its history, without going into too much detail. We really enjoyed it.
Shane was exceptionally polite, highly knowledgeable, and punctual. He shared his perspective on the history of South Africa, which greatly enhanced our understanding.
Did the half day tour with Shane. I found him to be friendly, punctual, personable and knowlegeable. He gave great local insights and facts on many things. I also very much appreciated that he was able to personalize the tour itenerary and time frame for me. Would recommend to anyone looking for a short (or longer) tour in the region. Thanks Shane
We took a tour of Johannesburg with Shane. Shane picked us up at 2 different hotels and we headed out. We hit the highlights recommended by Shane as we were open to anything. Saw the Mandela house, Constitution Hill, and the Apartheid Museum. Shane was a great guide and we enjoyed learning what he had to share. Highly recommend.
Shane was funny and informative throughout the trip. He included many personal experiences. Truly enjoyable and highly recommended.
I was referred by a friend who had a tour with Shane just a few days prior. Communication was great from beginning to end. The tour ended up being private tour and was a wonderful last minute addition to my trip Shane is full of knowledge and has a great love for Johannesburg and South Africa. I definitely would have missed out on a lot of history if he hadn't shown me around. The tour schedule helped us avoid the crowds and the lines at each site. The staff at all of the tour sites know him and are friendly with him. Shane took photos at various locations so I didn't have to and even messaged me some tips for places to eat and see for later on during my trip.
Fabulous private 1/2 day tour. We had some extra time as we were over holding a day in Johannesburg Tambo airport prior to departing on our 10 day safari. We wanted to learn more about the city and the history of Africa however were apprehensive to go on just any tour due to safety concerns and did not want a large group tour. After spending 6 hours with Shane I can unequivocally recommend his service. I was v impressed with his knowledge and depth of African history and local etiquette. His driving was good. Vehicle clean (no odours) and he was very attentive to our questions. He showed up on time at the airport hotel and at no time did I feel uneasy. He knew his way around and got us in to the various venues with ease (no line ups). After the tour I felt I had learned alot and it was great value.
We had a great day with Shane. He was knowledgeable and great fun. He accommodated our needs and went at our pace. Thoroughly recommend this tour
Our first tour, the tour guide did not show nor reach out to us to let us know why. The second tour the guide did show up and the experience was decent so we scheduled a third tour which our pick up time according to the booking was for 8am but the driver changed it to 6am. We were not ready and we were left. There was not enough time for us to be compensated for the inconvenience due to the fact that we were leaving the next day. I was very disappointed with their service.
I booked this tour last minute at 830pm the night before, and Shane was ready and waiting to collect me the next morning. He is a happy, knowledgeable, and funny guy, with interesting stories and a great sense of humour. I had a great day, learned a lot, had a laugh, and felt safe and relaxed all day. It was great to meet you Shane, thanks for everything.
I booked a tour with Shane through TripAdvisor and he was easy to deal with. There was an error on my TripAdvisor app and I was panicking because I could not get in touch with customer care from TripAdvisor to rectify the error, Shane sent a message to them on my behalf and rectified the error on my behalf. He was punctual and knowledgeable about the sites. He picked the best spots at the right time to allow an easy trip throughout. He guided us through Johannesburg and Soweto thoroughly. We felt safe in his car and well received. We were free to ask questions and asked him to stop in other areas that we were interested in and he obliged. It was an exciting day and fruitful as we discussed business ventures with him too. I would recommend him to anyone wanting to know more about South Africa’s past. And any other tour. Truly a great man.
The points of interest were great. It was well worth the money. I would’ve given five stars but our guide got angry with my group because he misunderstood our time requirements. We signed up for an 8 AM pick up but he picked us up at nine. I explained that we were leaving that day and we needed to be back by 1pm. He was great, very friendly very informative taking pictures and helping us navigate the tour until he learned that we could actually go longer than 1 o’clock and could use the full six hour tour. Our plans change because we initially wanted to go shopping after the tour and before heading to the airport, but we discovered that there were shopping venues while we were on the tour therefore we had more time to complete the tour. He literally argued with us and called us dishonest which was completely unprofessional! He gave us the full time but he no longer very friendly or enthusiastic. Other than that, it started out great it just didn’t end very well.
Shane was fabulous. He’s a very engaging and informative host who made the whole trip very enjoyable. We learnt a lot not only about Mandela and the locations but generally about like in South Africa We’d highly recommend this trip
We had a fantastic tour with Shane. Shane's knowledge helped us with our limited knowledge of all of the areas we visited. Shane was extremely patient with us and time spent looking through the Apartheid Museum. We thoroughly recommend his tours. Thanks Shane
We thoroughly enjoyed our tour. Our driver Shane was excellent and was very patient with us and our time spend at the Museum.
Our guide was a wealth of knowledge and the tour of the museum was very informative. I highly recommend this tour.
We had an amazing day with Shane! Very knowledgable and great fun! Totally recommend Shane for future tours!
My guests from Australia didn't have enough time to see everything at the Museum. It was well received.
Enjoyed my day with Shane! He didn't rush us, so we had all the time we needed at each place. (You'll need it at the Apartheid Museum) My sister has mobility issues and he assisted her in getting around. Soweto was SO much fun, I even went back in the evening. And we got to see a protest at Constitutional Hill! Definitely a tour I'd do again!
Shane was a great tour guide on our tour to Soweto. With him being from the area, he had a good bit of information to offer in terms of historical context. We visited the Nelson Mandela House, the Apartheid Museum, and Constitution Hill. After you visit each attraction Shane was there to welcome and transport you to the next site. We even had a great discussion about the history of Johannesburg. I would recommend this tour if you want to immerse yourself in the history of Johannesburg.
Shane was awesome. He was very knowledgeable and kind. He was very patient with us. I would recommend this tour.
Shane was punctual, flexible, and knowledgeable about the sites we visited. He answered all questions, and provided great background information. A great tour and one that inspires reflection about the past
Shane was an excellent guide in every way possible! Shane was informative and very flexible - this tour was a wonderful way to see Johannesburg and learn about it’s history in a safe, fun and interactive way — much appreciated!
Shane's a great guide. Knowledgeable and happy to work with the guest to create a unique experience.
This was the perfect introduction to Johannesburg and South African history. Shane was so knowledgeable, flexible and understanding! He allowed as much time as I wanted/needed to visit and read the exhibitions, looked after my safety and tailored the time, pick up and drop off to my needs/requests. There is more I want to see the next time I have time in Joburg, and I will be contacting Shane to take care of me!!
Shane is an extremely competent guide. In my opinion, few can match his friendliness, depth of knowledge and flexibility. For those who might be looking for someone they can trust, look no further. He is first rate.
Local insight about the place and culture. The museum was amazing and unsettling at the same time...
We had a good time with our tour guide, Shane. He was on time and very friendly and courteous. He took us to the soccer stadium which was not listed in the itinerary. He went out of his way to take care of my friend, Julia who has problems walking. He even made a special stop in Chinatown where I bought egg custard.
This was a fascinating tour and I had an amazing time learning about the history within the area. This is a must for any visitor or tourist to the area. I was lucky enough to have Shane as my guide and he was awesome. He was very knowledgeable, very entertaining and highly recommended.
I had the best day with my tour guide, Shane. He arrived right on time and was very knowledgeable about each stop on our tour. He was also very kind and courteous, as well as sharing many experiences he has had while living his whole life in South Africa. The Apartheid Museum was the highlight of the day. The whole day was well worth the price.
Our tour guide Shane personally made sure our experiences were maximized by timing and discussion of what we would be seeing.
Our tour with Shane was truly a fantastic experience! From the first moment everyone felt welcome and at ease. Shane is not only incredibly friendly and welcoming, but also a real connoisseur of the area. He told with great enthusiasm and humour about the history, culture and special stories that you hear nowhere else. What made this tour extra special was that Shane was perfectly suited to our interests. He took the time to answer questions and made sure we got to the most beautiful places – some even real hidden gems we never found ourselves.
Very good experience, Shane very friendly and with good knowledge of the places we visited. Give time to see everything at the pace you want
We had a great visit with Shane, he is very welcoming and friendly. The whole visit went really well. The Apartheid Museum provides a great lesson on the past history of South Africa. The guide gives very good advice on the city and activities to do. We had a very pleasant time, we highly recommend it
Attentive guide, very pleasant, informative and friendly visit. We recommend Shane with your eyes closed! It also offers several other interesting visits, for which we have also opted
