Tshepo is a fantastic tour guide! He is incredibly knowledgeable. And also very funny! We learned a lot about the history of Soweto, especially the Soweto Massacre.

Itinerary
On our way to Soweto we pass by the National Football Stadium, which hosted the opening and closing ceremonies of the World Cup 2010. We enter the Diepkloof area, where we will take a walk past vendors selling just about anything.
We set off to the heart of Soweto, driving past Baragwanath Hospital, an enormous taxi rank and the historic suburb of Diepkloof.
Our first stop in Soweto is at Motsoaledi informal settlement. Walk through the sand streets with your guide past local dwellings and a typical informal settlement day care that MoAfrika Tours and all travelers sponsor by visiting through us. Greet and meet the people in the settlement and learn more about their way of life.
We continue on through Orlando West to the hub of Soweto. We stop outside Regina Mundi Church and Freedom Square for a quick overview.
Walter Sisulu Square (Freedom Square), formally known as the Walter Sisulu Square of Dedication, is located in the heart of Kliptown in Soweto, South Africa.
The Hector Pieterson Museum is a large museum located in Orlando West, Soweto, South Africa, two blocks away from where Hector Pieterson was shot and killed 16 June 1976.
We make our way down the vibrant Vilakazi Street, past iconic monuments and the homes of Nelson and Winnie Mandela and Archbishop Desmond Tutu.
Time permitting, you have the option of stopping at Nelson Mandela Museum for a visit (own cost)
The morning ends at the massive Soweto Towers. This tour excludes lunch so grab yourself something to eat and drink (own cost) from a café, stroll around the craft market and watch people or join in bungee jumping off the towers (own cost and time permitting)

Our guide and driver were exceptional. We had a balanced view of South African history and their general knowledge of matters was outstanding! Our guide was incredibly accommodating and we can highly recommend this tour
Tshepo was a great guide who had so much local knowledge of the area. The tour was interesting and informative, and gave a good understanding of the struggles in Soweto.
We had an amazing tour with William! Hands down the best tour we've had . It was meticulously organized, and on time. We felt safe, comfortable, not at all rushed, not pressured to buy but presented with options. We really felt he was looking out for us the whole time. We visited Soweto households - done in a respectful way. Kudos to this team ! Highly recommend!
Our driver was so informative .. educational all the way .. we really appreciated the historical and modern insights .. seeing and meeting locals exceptional.
Goodwill was a great very knowledgeable and pleasant guide. The tour was educational with time for my personal preferences and interests with no rushing. The pickup was punctual, overall a great experience.
Highly recommend this tour. Our guide Clement was very knowledgeable, which gave us a better understanding of Soweto and it's history.
We had an excellent half day in Soweto, our guide Khutso was so friendly and informative. He gave us a great mix of historical facts as well as local insights. Our guide was local from the area and talked about the experience of people living in Soweto.
We would fully recommend this tour. Our guide Khutso did a wonderful job of explaining what we were seeing and it really gave us an authentic experience of both the historical importance of Soweto as well as what current day life is for people living in that community.
Very happy with the service from MoAfrika tours . Tinyiko our tour guide was excellent. Thank you very much
my family and I had just did this tour and it was wonderful to get to know soweto, but must of all it was a wonderful experience thanks to Mo, our guide. He gave us the opportunity to really get to know soweto, and make us feel welcome by the community. I highly recommend others to do this tour with Mo
We had a fantastic half-day tour of Soweto with Khutso. He was friendly, knowledgeable, and always attentive to our needs, making sure we were comfortable throughout the tour. He shared fascinating insights into the history, culture, and daily life of Soweto, answering all our questions with enthusiasm and professionalism. His passion for his work made the experience even more enjoyable. We highly recommend this tour and especially Khutso as a guide. Thank you for making our visit to Soweto so memorable!
1365610 Pending review Absolutely fascinating We were on a private tour but cannot remember who with! However they are all similar. Absolutely fascinating including a drive around the less exotic areas!!! The locals seemed content for us to be there. A different way of life for the 3.5 million that live there…from modest to very very basic. The area around Mandel’s house seemed safe but busy, but you need to be strong with the hawkers. This is a must do, and there are so many different ways of touring, such as walking, cycling, private, group etc. Can certainly take you out of your comfort zone.
This was a really good tour. Nelson was very knowledgeable about the history of the area and made us feel comfortable for the whole trip.
The half day Soweto tour with Khutso was great . He was knowledgeable, entertaining & helpful. Highly recommended this tour with Khutso.
Thomas was a great guide for this tour. It was just me on the tour so I got to see exactly what I wanted. Great history, especially the Hector Peterson Museum. Good communication before and after as well. You do visit a school and are probably going to want to donate a bit so bring some cash.
The trip was excellent . Ask for Carson! So knowledgeable, keen for you to know everything about the city and has a great sense of humour ! You won’t regret ! Thank you from all of us. The Jothilingam’s !
It was awesome! The guide Khutso was knowlegable, funny and informative, and gave us amazing insight as to the history and society of South Africa, as well as a comprehensive tour of Soweto. Would recommend this very much!
Great experience and a tour guide with a lot knowlegde about Afrika.
An eye-opening experience! We got picked up at our hotel and were able to modify the drop of location to the apartheids museum, which was very accommodating. He taught us lots about the soweto, the good, bad and the ugly. We also were able to go to the pieterson museum, during the tour, and walk through one of the settlements, and talk to the people living there. It was also nice to go by car, so we could see all the areas of the soweto. Would totally recommend Khutso as a guide!!
Khurtso was fantastic guide, we never felt rushed and his in-depth knowledge is impressive. What surprised and delighted me was the sense of community, unity and hope in even the poorest parts of Soweto. I was genuinely moved by what I saw. I would highly recommend this tour.
Mark was great- I loved the Soweto tour- would highly recommend. Definitely worth doing for history and politics. Mark did a great job explaining. Also loved Jack from the township part- he was very nice. Great tour.
Insightful & safe Khutso is a great guy
Thank you Tinyiko. You were fantastic for us today. So knowledgeable about so many things and very considerate when answering our many questions. You are clearly very popular given the interaction with so many people who recognised you today and made comments about how good you are as a tour guide. We understand why.
A short tour but jam packed with information and sites. Clement was extremely knowledgeable being born and bred in Soweto. It was great of him to share the challenges with housing. Moussa took us through the informal settlement and it was eye opening.
Khutso was an amazing guide. He is so knowledgeable and willing to answer every question we had. The tour was eye opening. A special part of the tour was being taken by Wendy around her street in the informal settlement part of Soweto. We enjoyed a delicious lunch with Khutso and everyone he introduced us to was very friendly. The tour felt very respectful and designed to help people understand the issues still relevant for Black Africans. Thank you Khutso
Carson was an absolutely fantastic guide, with much knowledge, informative and passionate about the culture and history of Soweto. Highly recommended.
This was one of the best tours I’ve been on in a long time. I was very happy with the entire experience and I would highly recommend it. I was able to see and learn so much about Soweto and South Africa.
Felt extremely safe during the afternoon tour with Tshepo. His explanations were detailed and I learnt a lot about Soweto during the time spent with him. Would definitely recommend this experience!
My guide Lebo was very knowledgeable and explained everything for me. Covered all I wanted especially in a short time frame which suited my needs perfectly. Thanks Lebo
Informative tour by Khutso, as well as a local guide within Soweto. Khutso was incredibly knowledgeable and answered any questions that I had.
Great information and our guide Khutso was very friendly and knowledgeable
The Soweto Half-Day Tour was such an insightful and emotional experience. We visited many iconic sites and attractions, including the Johannesburg Stadium, the Soweto Towers, Nelson Mandela’s House, Archbishop Desmond Tutu’s home, and the Hector Pieterson Memorial. One thing I really appreciated was how seamless everything was from the start. Mo Afrika Tours conveniently picked us up directly from our hotel, and the vehicle was clean, comfortable, and very well maintained, which made the experience even more enjoyable. I took the afternoon tour, which starts at around 13:00 and it ended at about 17:30. We also got dropped off at our hotel. Nicholas from Mo Afrika was absolutely amazing — kind, friendly, and incredibly knowledgeable. I learned so much about South Africa’s history, heritage, and culture throughout the tour. I cannot thank you enough for this wonderful opportunity. I would highly recommend this experience to anyone visiting Soweto.
We had an amazing tour with Carson. This was such an educational and eye opening experience. HIGHLY RECOMMEND
Very beautiful and meaningful tour, without pointless stops for supposed food. I also really appreciated that the excursion took place with a small number of participants and was not canceled as usually happens in similar cases.
good day, learn a lot of South Africa history. Khutso takes us a wonderful journey.
Enjoyed the experience. Sobering reality and the story is told well.
We were picked up from our hotel right on time. The guide was very pleasant and extremely knowledgeable about Soweto history and Apartheid - we learned so much from this tour. There were a few stops where we got out of the car but much of this was a driving tour. The highlight of the morning was the visit to a neighborhood in the township of Orlando. We were greeted by a wonderful young woman resident named Hope, who explained life and community in this very poor area. We felt very safe walking around with Hope and even visited a preschool there. We are thankful for the opportunity to visit and learn about life in a township.
Thomas was an excellent guide, explaining the complicated history of the area and patiently answering questions. Highly recommend.
Great insight into Soweto! Marc our guide was knowledgeable, good English and took us to the slums of Soweto and showed us the contrast between the well to do houses and the tin shacks A local of the poor area took us through the township and heartbreaking to see basic hygiene like electricity, water, toilets were not there. Watched bungee jumpers off the cooling towers which was fun Hector pieterson museum was hard hitting and a good insight of what went on in 1976. Madela house on Vilakazi street was good to see. Good your, highly recommend if you are only here for a short trip.
We had a lovely Soweto tour with Nicholas. He was very polite, always willing to help and answer our questions. He adapted the tour for us and what we liked etc. The actual informal settlement bit of the tour was really eye opening and a must do. We were guided by a different person, a local, which was also a nice way of supporting that community. Great customer service, great communication, clean good transport
The tour was great! Lebo was an excellent guide!!! I loved his history of Johannesburg lesson. Truly a gem of a guide! The Hector Pietersen Museum, included in the tour, was outstanding! Visiting the Nelson Mandela House was also great. There was an additional fee to enter, but if you’re moved by all Nelson and Winnie Mandela accomplished, it is also worthwhile to see.
We toured with Lebo and he was excellent. Well informed and shared a lot of Johannesburg and South African history. Tour was interesting and a great experience for my family.
Very informative tour especially to Soweto and understanding the social and economic status. Away from the touristy things on our trip, this was a real eye opener for us. Thomas, our guide was excellent and kept us on a good pace. He was also very informative and willing to answer our questions.
Amazing experience, you can’t leave South Africa without visiting Soweto. Essential visit to understand the history of South Africa. Traveling solo I felt safe and taken care of all the way from pick up to drop off. MoAfrika was the best choice and our guide Khutso/Goodwill was very knowledgeable and fun, really professional.
Thomas was a wonderful guide and safe driver. He knew all about Soweto and African history. He knew all the best places for pictures and souvenirs. We loved meeting some of the locals. We walked through the streets of a tin house village and visited a local pre school. The people are very friendly.
Our driver / guide Thomas is wonderful. He is very knowledgeable and passionate about Soweto. He picked us up at our hotel. We felt very safe the whole time. The highlight was a stroll through a local tin home village. Thomas has a steady hand and took great pictures of us in front of each site. We loved it.
We had a 4 hour tour with our driver Thapelo. Being from the UK, we had been initially worried about the safety aspects of touring Joburg and Soweto, but it was actually a highlight of our holiday. Our guide was amazing and he put our minds at ease with any safety worries. We walked around small parts of Joburg city centre and Soweto and spoke to many locals - all who were very friendly. Thapelo was incredibly knowledgeable and chatted to us and the kids the whole time, even keeping the attention on the 10 and 13 year olds. Thoroughly recommend this trip.
Overall, I had a really good experience. The tour guide was excellent — knowledgeable, engaging, and made the tour very enjoyable. The only downside was that two museums listed in the itinerary were closed due to Easter Family Day, and I was not informed about this in advance. Since that was a big reason I booked the tour, it was disappointing. Still, a great experience overall — just wish there had been clearer communication beforehand.
I really enjoyed this tour - I learned so much! Tinyiko was a wonderful guide, knowledgeable and warm and funny. I highly recommend.
