About Activity
Explore the history, culture and transformation of Soweto on this approximately 6-hour guided tour. Discover the contrast between the old mining hostels built during apartheid for migrant workers and the newer residential areas, offering insight into Soweto’s resilience and ongoing development. Visit Orlando West, home to key landmarks of South Africa’s liberation struggle, and Vilakazi Street, the only street in the world to have been home to two Nobel Peace Prize winners, Nelson Mandela and Desmond Tutu. Continue to the Mandela House Museum and the Hector Pieterson Memorial & Museum, commemorating the 1976 Soweto Uprising, before driving past the iconic Orlando Towers, a symbol of Soweto’s regeneration. The tour concludes at the Apartheid Museum, where photographs, films, artefacts and personal narratives explore the history of apartheid and South Africa’s journey to democracy.
The tour includes return transfers from Sandton hotels and entrance fees to the Mandela House Museum, Hector Pieterson Memorial & Museum and Apartheid Museum. Lunch is not included.
