This is an amazing way to experience Soweto and to learn about its history. Musa is a young guide already a pro. Mulalo was helping out, he is super knowledgeable and very engaging. The Kota at the end was perfect after a ride.

Orlando Stadium is the heart of Soweto as it boasts a rich and proud history that dates back to 1959 when it was originally built. After being demolished and rebuilt from scratch at a cost of R280 million, the new look Orlando Stadium now houses a capacity crowd of 37 139 spectators which includes 21 hospitality suites, two open hospitality areas, conference rooms, a gymnasium and a 200-seater auditorium. Not only is the original ‘Mecca of South African football’ home to local giants and 1995 CAF Champions League winners, Orlando Pirates – but the venue has also moved up the popularity ranks for its hosting skills in major sports and entertainment events. The venue continued to raise the benchmark in South African history as it hosted the first ever rugby matches when the 2010 Vodacom SuperRugby competition semi-final and final fixtures were hosted at Orlando Stadium.

Thado was an excellent guide and good company over our meal. Cycling was a great way to visit the township which Thado clearly knew well.
The Good: small group size and length of the tour The Bad: 1) bikes are in need of a good service/replacement; 2) our guide was reading his notes off his mobile phone; 3) price of tour was excessive for what we got (only 1 bottle of water and a kota). The Ugly: 1) Helmets with hairnets were not provided (hairnets are essential for sanitary wearing of helmets), and the wearing of helmets not enforced. 2) We were so disappointed that our guide made disparaging comments about other cultures in a joking fashion. This is not professional.
Great trip. Learned a lot about the history of the area and guide Thorbo was great. Got a good feel for Soweto
This is an outstanding way to experience Soweto. It was the perfect mix of history and culture. Thabo is such a talented guide, he is super knowledgeable and very engaging, he made it a fun and easy learning experience. The meal at the end is a real treat!
This tour was honestly one of the highlights of our time in South Africa. We were a group of 4 adults and 4 children (aged 8–11), and I wasn’t sure beforehand how well the kids would engage with the history, but they loved it. A huge part of that was down to our guide, Thabo. He was absolutely fantastic—so friendly, incredibly knowledgeable and brilliant with the children. He answered their endless questions, kept them interested throughout and made everyone feel welcome. The bike ride itself was relaxed and easy, with plenty of stops along the way, so it never felt rushed. Seeing Soweto by bicycle gave us a completely different perspective than we would have had from a coach or car. Thabo shared so much about the area’s history, culture and daily life, and it really made the experience meaningful. Lunch was delicious too and a lovely chance to try local food. We all came away feeling like we’d learnt so much while having a genuinely fun day out. If you’re visiting Johannesburg, I’d recommend this tour without hesitation. Whether you’re travelling as a couple, with friends or as a family like we were, it’s an experience you won’t forget. Thanks again, Thabo, for such a brilliant day!
Thabo made this experience most memorable!! The bike ride was on safe and reliable bikes and about 12km in total all across Soweto. At no stage did we feel unsafe, all locals were accommodating to us. We saw all the sights with expert commentary with the best lunch. Loads of photo opportunities, Thabo gave expert history lessons as well. Highly recommended tour, mild fitness with bike riding ability required only a small amount of hills. Had the best time!
We were given a very informative and interesting tour by Thabo. I really recommend this tour, you get to see and learn a lot more about Soweto while being on a bike!
Thebo was SO knowledgeable and entertaining. How can you not love a guide who dances on his bike and greets all the locals?!! We thoroughly enjoyed our tour and would highly recommend it!
Thabu did a great job.Enjoyed the tour especially the informal city where we were made to feel very welcome
Fantastic day!! Thabo, our guide, was knowledgeable and incredibly personable. He was a walking encyclopaedia!! Would highly recommend.
My husband and I chose this trip to do something a little different and it didn’t disappoint. Our guide Thabo was excellent explaining the history of Soweto and of apartheid. The weather was also great for us, no rain which was lucky! It was lovely to see the townships and greet the happy friendly people who call it home. The children all waved and shouted “Hello!” as we rode past and I couldn’t help but notice how happy they all were! We enjoyed the Kato sandwich for lunch, and soaked up the party vibe on a Saturday afternoon. There are a couple of hills, but the bikes are well maintained and easy to ride.
I had an excellent tour experience with Teboho!! He was very kind, informative, and accommodating. I learned so much from him and truly enjoyed my experience! I would definitely recommend the tour with him as your guide.
Thabo was a great friendly guide, providing a very knowledgeable and informative tour of Soweto. Getting around by bike was a fun means of transportation and meant that we could cover more of the local / less touristy side of Soweto and everywhere we went the people esp children were so friendly. Well paced and a delicious lunch at the end of the tour. Our whole family (including 4 teenagers) really enjoyed the tour and chatting to Thabo along the way. Thanks for a great experience.
We had a great time exploring Soweto, learning about the people and the history and biking all around town - our tour guide was excellent and knowledgable
The tour was very informative and safe. My tour guide Thabo was great wouldn’t ask for anyone else. Also lunch was good too.
Our guide Teboho was excellent. He told a lot about the history of Soweto and we also had time to visit the Mandela House on our own. The bikes were good and it was a great experience to explore Soweto that way. I definitely will recommend the tour.
We did a morning tour with our wonderful tour guide, Thabo. We enjoyed it thoroughly - it was good exercise which was a nice change from doing a car tour and my 7year old who enjoys cycling, coped well. We felt like we had a very good view of Soweto and covered all the important history and sites.
We did a big group tour with Teboho and he was excellent! Super knowledgeable about Soweto and its history and kept us all safe as we biked through traffic. Be prepared for lots of hills, wear sunscreen, and bring a backpack if you’re wanting to buy any souvenirs along the way. Many in our group hadn’t biked in years, and we all managed well. Highly recommend this over doing a car tour!
Thabo was an awesome guide, very knowledgeable with great humour. Interesting to learn more about the history of Soweto.
In depth ride thru Soweto. Thabo was fantastic and shared so much history with us We really were able to “see” this area. The ride is fairly long and there are several hills. Be prepared
The bicycle tour of Soweto was a great way to visit this area. We learned a lot about the upheaval in 1976 and what it's like today. Enjoyed the church singing as we rode by (it was a Sunday am). The guide was experienced, friendly and interesting. Lunch as a treat (local food)!
With any kind of biking or walking tour, the skill and personality of the guide makes all the difference. Thabo was excellent and a walking encyclopedia of Soweto’s history. This is definitely the best way to experience Soweto. A walking tour will not cover enough and a van tour is too weird. The lunch that was included was “traditional” Soweto fare, but probably not palatable for Western visitors (French fries, hot dog, baloney on thick slab of bread), so bring along extra snacks.
Thabo was a wealth of knowledge and excellent guide through Soweto! Lots of history, stories and great energy, thank you!
This was a Beautiful & Fun tour that I truly enjoyed. The group was amiable, and our guide (so sorry I forgot his name) was very knowledgeable and kind. I 💯 would recommend this tour. 10/10
This is an exceptional trip and made by our fantastic guide Thabo who was very knowledgeable and great company. This area has such history that you need a bike and Thabo to see and understand the area. Lots of history/ smiling faces and fun to be had cycling and learning about the past and present. Simply brilliant
This tour is a must do for anyone visiting the area. Thabo is an amazing guide. Very knowledgeable, friendly, engaging and a great speaker. He was also great with our kids!
Thembo was a very knowledgeable guide. He is from the area so that gave it a personal feel. Also very friendly and easy to talk to. Highly recommend!
This was an incredible and meaningful tour that gave us the chance to interact with locals and explore places we never would have discovered on our own. We sampled most of the local beers and food like chicken feet, kota, fish, pap, and minced meat sausage—and even took the local taxi/bus! Our guide, Iwazi, was genuine and proud to share his community with us, which made the experience all the more special. Please note: the tour includes walking through neighborhoods that some visitors may not be used to and might initially feel outside their comfort zone. But that’s exactly what makes this tour so impactful—it’s real. Come with an open mind, and be ready to try new things. We left with our hearts and stomachs full!
Thabo was a superb guide. Born and bred in Soweto, his knowledge and ability to tell the community’s story and history was just brilliant. The tour shows you much more than where most tourists go. Soweto is an integral part of modern South Africa’s history so an essential visit! The special lunch of Kota was also delicious!
It was fun! Our tour guide was a nice young man. We rode around town and learned about the history of Soweto. If you are a woman, please be aware that there may be catcalling. If you plan to walk around the area after the tour, bring a male companion.
Thabo was great! Very knowledgeable and upbeat! We had a great time getting to explore Soweto with him
The cycling tour was well-organized, and our guide was friendly and knowledgeable. A fun and meaningful way to experience a unique part of Johannesburg.
Thabo was friendly, professional, and kind. He was careful about safety and has knowledge about Joburg and Soweto that he shared.
15-18Km bike ride around Soweto with a well informed guide. You’ll see the Orlando Pirates football stadium, the Tutu house, the Mandela house, and many neighborhoods and history of the area.
Fabulous tour with Thebo. He is a great guide, well-spoken, informative and friendly. Soweto is a wonderful district. Full of history and stories. We did the bike tour. It was moderately challenging, woth some inclines. The sights are spectacular from a historical perspective and Thebo does a great job to give one a clear perspective of Soweto’s history. You get to go through many neighborhoods both affluent and poor giving a great overview of life here. And then you get to try a kota sandwich-traditional Soweto sandwich. Overall 5/5 all around
Our guide Thabi was simply brilliant - highly knowledgeable about South African history, very engaging with our group, clearly known by many local people as we cycled around and great fun. We felt super safe at all times.
The guide Thabo started off with a WhatsApp message before we arrived ensuring we knew what was going to happen. He was very knowledgeable about all the sightings points and couldn’t have been any more friendlier. I would absolutely recommend this.
Great tour, with a fantastic guide. Thabo had a lot to say about the history of soweto and its notable figures. Recommended!
We did a bicycle tour in Soweto with a guide who was born and raised there. It was a very active tour (hill up and off) with lost of interesting information about the history of Soweto. Thans to One Day Africa
Thabo was a great and very friendly guide (as was his colleague - apologies I cannot remember the name). Even our boys (young teenagers, who had had reservations about the cycling) enjoyed it and felt happy to ask questions, which Thabo was always happy to answer. We felt safe the whole time, and Thabo was really good at bringing life and history in Soweto to life for us. Cycling, we felt much closer to the place (and were greeted by lots of children on the street, while Thabo knows many people and is greeted all the time), and we also went through many areas that were simply lived in, not just the most well known tourist spots. The sandwiches at the end were very good and filling :) We can thoroughly recommend this tour!
Thabo was a brilliant guide. He was fun, flexible and informative. He showed us lots of different parts of the area (in a way it’s harder to when walking), and alongside the history he gave some fascinating insights into present day South Africa. A great guy to hang out with and learn from! One Day Africa more generally were very helpful and accommodating.
Thambo was an exceptional guide. He explained us all the historical features about SOWETO, the apartheid and South African culture. His knowledge was very good with a point of humanity and kindness and also with the local point of view. Even if we had saw a lot about history the previous days he was able to show us new things and challenge our minds. Cycling through SOWETO allowed us to discover more places than walking and make us a better understanding about this special place. Thambo was very careful with our security (on the road) but also gave us a lot of peacefulness. We absolutely recommend that experience.
Had a really good guide. Knowledge and very friendly. A lot of information about the history and saw some great places. Tried to load photos but app won't allow 🤷♂️
The whole tour was amazing, Thabo was so knowledgable and made the tour really fun and enjoyable. Felt completely safe with Thabo and the bikes were really great quality. Highlight was the Kota burger really cool restaurant as well.
Brilliant way to learn about Soweto. We had such a great tour with an amazing guide Thabo. He made us feel totally safe and welcome. The bikes have been upgraded since the last reviews and they now have gears that makes getting up the hill much easier. 5 star tour!
Thabo was an amazing guide!! He was very nice and explained everything there is to know about Soweto. Soweto is a beautiful place that deserves to be more famous. Wether it is visiting Mandela house, having a traditional lunch and much more, Soweto is a must when you come to Johannesburg.
Me and my wife had an excellent tour around Soweto. Our guide was a genuinely friendly and nice guy called Mulalo. He had brilliant knowledge and very good way of presenting it. The bikes are modern and easy to ride, they allow you to see, and be properly immersed in the townships. You’re made to feel totally safe by the Guide, in what could be an in intimidating environment. It’s a pretty heavy/somber experience, but a very good and informative one. Should be coupled with doing the Apartheid Museum (also very good) if that’s what you’re here to learn about.
Our bicycle trip through Orlando with our guide Thbo Mzolo was interesting and fun. We learned a lot about the history of apartheid and the Soweto-uprising in 1976. He answered all of our questions and took care of us while cycling (through the left-side-traffic).
My booking was confirmed via e-mail and shortly after I received the tickets. However, the tour guide never showed up on the day. When we called the guy he just said that they didn’t operate today. Luckily we were able to book with a local guide nearby, otherwise we would’ve driven to Soweto for nothing. I’m still waiting for the refund of my money also! Terrible experience!
