The evening begins with meeting your guide directly at your central hotel on the European side of Istanbul. From there, you'll make your way to Taksim Square, the heart of the modern city, where your guide sets the scene before you step onto Istiklal Avenue. This is Istanbul's great promenade, lined with 19th-century façades and busy well into the night, and the street food along it makes an ideal opening act. You'll taste the snacks locals actually grab on the move, with plenty of stories about what you're eating and where it came from.
A short detour leads to Nevizade, the narrow lane at the centre of Istanbul's meyhane culture. These traditional taverns have been gathering places for centuries, run historically by the city's Greek, Armenian, and Jewish communities, and the tradition of long, convivial meals built around shared plates still defines how Istanbul socialises. Here you'll pause for a light tasting and soak up the atmosphere, getting a first glimpse of the dining culture you'll explore properly later in the evening.
From there, you'll ride the historic Tünel down the hill to Karaköy, one of the oldest underground railways in the world. This once-gritty port district has become one of the city's most interesting food neighbourhoods, where old-school family shops sit alongside a new generation of inventive kitchens. You'll sample a couple of local flavours while your guide explains how traditional and modern cooking have come to share the same streets.
For your next stop, you’ll hop aboard a ferry at Karaköy and cross the Bosphorus to Kadıköy, leaving Europe for Asia in about twenty minutes, with the lights of the old city glittering behind you. Kadıköy has a lively, local character, with bustling streets and a food scene that is popular with Istanbul residents rather than visitors. You'll wander through it with your guide, tasting as you go, before settling into another traditional meyhane. Over a glass of rakı, the anise-flavoured spirit often called Turkey's national drink, you'll be served a generous selection of hot and cold meze, the small dishes that anchor a meyhane meal. Your guide walks you through the essentials: how rakı is traditionally poured and sipped, why it turns milky white with water, and how to approach a meze table the way a local would, from first plate to last.
With dinner behind you, the walk continues toward Moda, a charming seaside neighbourhood where Istanbulites come to stroll, linger, and take in the evening air by the water. Afterwards, you'll return to the European side by Marmaray, the train that runs beneath the Bosphorus itself, a fitting final crossing at the end of a night spent moving between two continents. To conclude your evening, your guide will escort you back to your hotel, enriched by your in-depth exploration of Istanbul’s exemplary cuisine.
