About Activity
Istanbul after dark has a special kind of magic. When the crowds thin and the streetlights come on, the domes and minarets of the old imperial capital sparkle cinematically and the streets are infused with a new energy, a world away from the hustle and bustle of the city by day. Strolling around Istanbul at twilight, you’ll find a tantalising mix of history and modern nightlife, and our private walking tour is a wonderful way to spend an evening discovering the charming Old City, Taksim Square and Istiklal Avenue in the company of a friendly local guide.
On your private evening walking tour, you will:
- Explore the historic heart of Istanbul at twilight;
- Embark on a relaxed route around the city's most important sites;
- Admire the elegant domes and soaring minarets of the Blue Mosque and see the iconic Hagia Sofia all lit up;
- Walk through the Hippodrome, once the centre of Byzantine social and sporting events;
- Find out about Istanbul’s nightlife and restaurant scene and see how locals spend their evenings;
- Get a taste of modern Istanbul at Taksim Square;
- End with a stroll along the lively Istiklal Avenue.
Your route begins at Sultanahmet, the historic heart of Istanbul, as the light fades and the monuments begin to glow. You’ll admire the Blue Mosque, with its cascading domes and six slender minarets, built in the early 17th century and named for the Iznik tiles that line its interior. Standing majestically opposite the mosque, you’ll also take in Hagia Sophia, one of the great buildings of the world, completed in the 6th century and still among the most extraordinary structures ever raised. Seen lit against the night sky, it is truly spectacular, and your guide can unpack its exquisite architecture and turbulent history.
From here you’ll stroll through the Hippodrome, once the social and sporting centre of Byzantine Constantinople, where chariot races drew enormous crowds and political fortunes could turn on the mood of the stands. Little of the great arena survives, but several remarkable monuments still stand in its place, including an Egyptian obelisk that is more than three thousand years old. Your guide fills in the gaps, tracing the city’s story from Byzantine emperors to Ottoman sultans and on to the Istanbul of today.
The evening then moves across the city to Taksim Square, the centre of gravity for modern Istanbul, where your guide explains how the city reinvented itself in the late Ottoman era and under the Republic. From there, you’ll stroll the length of Istiklal Avenue, the grand pedestrian boulevard lined with 19th-century façades, nostalgic trams, and the old European quarter of Beyoğlu. It is lively well into the night and an ideal place to see how locals spend their evenings, with plenty of insight from your guide into the city’s restaurants, bars, and after-dark rhythms.
When the walk is done, your guide is glad to suggest restaurants and bars nearby so you can continue the evening at your own pace. This tour is ideal for travellers who want to see Istanbul at its most atmospheric, and experience both the ancient and modern faces of the city in a single, memorable evening.
Please note: Dinner is not included in the tour. However, if guests wish to stop for a meal at their own expense, the guide will be happy to recommend a suitable venue and adjust the route accordingly, subject to the 4-hour tour duration.
