Absolutely brilliant experience. Our guide and teacher Thom was super friendly and gave us a really great experience. Communication before and after the trip was excellent. The boat trip to the island was fun and the cooking was really fun, helped by not having to prepare anything or wash up afterwards! We've successfully repeated some of the meals at home since returning. Thank you Thom for a great day out!

Itinerary
We will nicely embark by boat ( about 35 minutes trip) to join my family’s village on a small and beautiful island on the peaceful river delta of Hoi An. Upon your arrival, you will be served a fresh and delicious fruit juice, a typical Vietnamese fruit-based drink. While you enjoy your tasty drink, It will be the opportunity to learn about the Vietnamese countryside life and meet Grandma. From here, we will go to my family’s home where you will begin your cooking lesson. Learn how the rice paper, used in the flavorful fried eggroll is prepared and how to prepare several typical succulent dishes of this authentic region: -Banh Xeo (small rice flour crepes) a specialty of Hoi An. -Grilled, marinated pork brochettes with a special sauce. -Green papaya salad -Fish prepared according to a local recipe. * Vegetarian menu on request: Banh Xeo, Eggplant grilled, Green papaya salad, Mushroom, and tofu clay pot. Once this tasty meal has been prepared, we will enjoy the meal in my grandmother’s garden. You will also be served pumpkin soup and “Xí Mà“ a delicious dessert (black sesame pudding). We will return to Hoi An by boat.

What an amazing day out with My Grandma’s Cooking class. So many hotels do cooking classes here in Hoi An so it was fantastic to get a different experience in a boat ride over to an island and see the cooking place that has been set up. Such a vibe! Thom our guide was phenomenal. Very knowledgeable and had some beautiful stories about being bought up by her grandma from the age of 2. Such a great day to spend the day. And the food and cooking were amazing if I do say so myself 😜 I would come back again and bring family and friends 💯
One of the best tours I've ever been on. This is a great chance to get off the tourist trail and get a glimpse of the personality, family life, and cuisine of Vietnam. You'll start from the most basic of materials, in a place surrounded by what you will be cooking. The guide and her family are friendly, endless patient and helpful, and authentic. You'll create some amazing cuisine and experience history and tradition through food in a genuinely rewarding way. Highly recommended!
We had the best day! The tour was so well done. Facilities were excellent and Thom was so lovely in everything she did that day. Was a gorgeous day out and we highly recommend.
Fantastic course! Thom is very knowledgeable and you get all the help you get. Great receipes, fantastic ingredients. A must to do on your trip in Hoi An!
Must do!! 1 of the best experiences we had in Vietnam. Would definitely recommend the market tour before as well. Thom did an amazing job teaching about the food/cooking and the Vietnamees habits.
One of the (of probably the) most amazing experience we have had in Vietnam! From the early morning market to the boat trip to grandma’s kitchen on the river Island, everything was amazing. Thuum (Thom) and het family are fabulous hosts! Friendly, knowledgeable and of course great cooks (and instructors). We have learned a lot, had great fun doing karaoke on the boat and the meal was so tasty! Would definitely book again if I had the chance!
My Grandma’s Home Cooking Class was one of the highlights of our trip to Hoi An. Instead of just another cooking class in a hotel or restaurant in Hoi An, this was also an interesting excursion to a rural village outside Hoi An. And, excitedly, ‘Grandma’ turned out to be our guide Thom’s own grandmother, now 101. She no longer meets guests because of her age and blindness, but it was still exciting to see ‘Grandma’ from a distance as she still lives in her small house on the property. I would highly recommend this cooking class as a very authentic experience and glimpse into rural family life. The cooking classes are conducted outdoors, under cover, at the back of the family property. While other family members prepared the ingredients, we had time to sit down with our guide/cooking teacher Thom and talk to her about growing up in this village and life, generally, in Vietnam. During the cooking demonstrations, Thom’s aunty and other relatives from their house across the little natural pathway dropped in to say hello – and some of the neighbours said hello while walking past. We were very glad we took Thom’s advice to eat a light breakfast. With her easy to follow instructions, we cooked a few meals which we then enjoyed eating. There was plenty of very tasty food! The journey to the village, with Thom and a driver in a private car, was a great opportunity to experience the countryside and we really enjoyed the approx. 40-minute boat trip back to Hoi An – a different view of fishermen and their riverside homes. And, now back in Australia, we are looking forward to cooking ‘Grandma’s’ own special recipes from her recipe book we were given on our return to the office.
Fantastic Day with our wonderful guide and Chef Thom!! She was so knowledgeable, and shared lots of local stories and information. A perfect opportunity to get out of the tourist areas and have an experience in a local village. The food we cooked was delicious and we will easily be able to make again at home.
Having done many cooking classes we wanted something that was a bit different. This was it. A small group that went to Thoms Grandmas house to cook traditional Vietnamese food. We boards a boathouse a 45 minute trip to the island where the house was. This was not your traditional commercial kitchen but so much more. Had a local feel and allowed us to cook amazing dishes. They also catered for food allergies without any issues. We made our own rice paper. Cooked beautiful chicken, mad a traditional Vietnamese pancake followed by is papaya salad and fish. All food was tasty. We also got a recipe book fireball the dishes we cooked. I would highly recommend this day out.
This was an amazing experience not the normal big group commercialized cooking class. On the island in the home of Thom"s Grandma which made it a local cultural typical Vietnamese experience. We learned so much about the eating culture, local food, traditions & preparation. Since it was a small group we could ask anything and Thom was happy to share information with us. I really enjoyed the fact that we prepared everything ourselves & nothing was pre - prepared. Only local fresh organic ingredients were used. It was clean & hygienic
What a great way to spend the day. Learnt alot, great to experience the local market and a great way to learn how to enjoy the local cuisine. It was great to enjoy the family experience. Thom was a fabulous host and guide. Can’t recommend enough.
Great experience! Really special, good food and Thom is very good in explaining everything. Would definitely recommend!
We had a wonderful experience with our guide, Na, at Grandma's home on an island in the river. We had a short walk from town to a medium-sized boat, then a 45 minute ride to the island. We made four dishes there, all of them excellent! We were also provided recipes for the dishes we made with some potential American substitutions. We also saw the traditional way of husking rice and separating the good rice from the chaff, then made rice paper that we later are in spring rolls. A 30 minute walk back to the boat (different spot than the drop off) with some glimpses of Vietnamese island life. Overall a wonderful experience, highly recommended! Thank you, Na!
I choose this cooking class because I liked the idea of it being located on one of the islands, so arriving by boat. Im definitely not a cook but the dishes I prepared that day were delicious :) Varied menu , dietary restrictions catered for, beautiful fresh ingredients. The days organisation was perfect. Thom and her team are excellent. Would definitely recommend. Thank you for the recipe book (no excuse not to try at home!)
This was a fantastic experience and we really enjoyed it,
This was one of the best experiences we had in Vietnam. There was a relaxing boat trip and then it was very interesting to learn about the culture and the family on the island. I will be trying to recreate the recipes when i get home. Loved it all. Thom, the guide and demonstrator was great.
Everything was above expectation! The boat ride to the village was enjoyable. The cooking class was well organized. The venue was clean. Everything was well presented. Thom (the instructor) and her team were excellent and gave clear demonstrations and explanations. It was a very enjoyable experience!
This was such a lovely experience!!! The food is incredible, made 4 full Vietnamese dishes that were so delicious! The staff, thom, was super nice, sweet and took lots of pics for our memories! Would highly recommend this tour to anyone interest doing a Vietnamese cooking class.
Well organized and very professional cooking class with passionate lead of Thom. Start on the local market to know the ingredients, a boat tour to the family's place on an island and a cooking class led by Thom. At the end eating together the prepared dishes. Thom, thanks for a beautiful day. Cam' on nhieu!!!
Really informative, excellent English speaking guide, lots of fun. Genuinely great experience. Highly recommend!
We had such an amazing day either the crew at My Grandma's Home Cooking. Probably the highlight of our two-and-a-half week visit to Vietnam. First thing in the morning we were taken by boat from Hoi An 45 minutes up river to a remote village island where we spent to day under cool rattan shelters (kitchens!) preparing and cooking a variety of Vietnamese dishes, which we devoured as the day went on! It had a rustic feel, but was slickly organised. So impressive! And certainly not expensive. Everyone was lovely, great company, and we came away with a cook book of the recipes of the dishes we had made, and have been successfully replicating them back home in Australia. Highly recommend this excursion. Nic and Maria
Friendly helpful tour staff. The trip was well organised and had plenty of variety. Would recommend
Probably the best tour we did on our trip our guide it was her Grandmother's house was absolutely amazing and I thought the tour was a phenomenal we got a cookbook and we had the best time
Great fun day especially enjoyed the add on of market visit early morning! Enjoyed boat rides too. Lovely to meet Thom’s family who was our guide and chef!
What a fantastic way to learn about Vietnamese cooking. You got taken to the 'Island' by boat. Shown how to make a full meal which you sat and eat with your fellow chefs. Highly recommend.
Cruise the day on a local boat ride 45mins to Grandma's Island with Thom *answering all our questions along the way. We heard about the locals shrimp & mullet farming. On the Island we walked 5mins to a tropical outdoor setting. A delicious Welcome drink on arrival (today was fresh passionfruit). A well organized day full of food, laughter and learning. We hand made our own rice pan cakes filled them with traditional Vietnamese cuisine and dipped in local dipping sauces. We made delicious spring rolls... and made a Vietnamese salad with pawpaw and prawns. There were Vegan and Vegetarian options for each dish. We finished with the Tuna fish Claypot served with rice. Grandma's kitchen shared a taste of their traditional Vietnamese pumpkin soup and an interesting desert. You will definitely not go hungry on this sumptuous tour.
A Holistic Cooking experience, from a visit to the market with Thom, who explains the various ingredients and workings of the market brilliantly, to a 3 course meal on an Island you cook your self AND delicious and authentic. Lots of cooking classes available in Vietnam, this is different.
Absolutely fabulous day trip very interesting and informative the granddaughter spoke very good English really recommend this trip the food we cooked was lovely and the lady’s were all brilliantly helpful 😍
One of our best experiences in Vietnam. Totally loved the day and Thom is a brilliant and funny host. Had loads to eat and so glad we didn't have breakfast before. Lovely boat trip to start and end the tour also. Time went so fast and enjoyed meeting other travellers on the trip also. All round a brilliant day.
We had the best day with Thom! Would recommend this cooking class as a must do during your trip to Vietnam! Our vegetarian ladies were catered for as well. Thom even gave us a little book of the recipes we put together! We have all been inspired & have great intentions of cooking the delights we sampled from home in the UK. Such an atmospheric setting to cook & such fun too! Thank you to Thom & her family!
A must when in Hoian. Truly an incredible experience not to be missed. Thom, our tour guide, was a fantastic host and great teacher. We learned a lot not just about cooking but about Vietnam and got to see a part of life in the countryside away from the city and tourists. Great value for money and the food was delicious! This was the best activity we did in Hoian.
This was such a great day out, from the moment we set off on out boat trip from Hoi An after meeting our guide, until after we arrived back. After landing on the island, there was a short walk to the family home where the cooking took place. At first we were shown how rice flour was traditionally made and we cooked some rice pancakes which we used later. We made four different dishes (if I recall correctly), all of which we ate afterwards and were delicious, and the instructions we received were very clear, and the equipment provided was great. A very professionally run day but with a very homely feel.
An excellent day out and great value
We had a wonderful day on the "My Grandma’s Home Cooking Class" tour. Our guide and head chef, Thom, was absolutely fantastic—her passion for Vietnamese cuisine is infectious and really made the experience special. The day started with a lovely boat ride out to the island and her village, which was a great way to see a different side of the area. We prepared four courses ourselves under her expert guidance, and the food was incredibly tasty. If you’re looking for an authentic, hands-on cooking experience in Hội An, this is it. Participants receive a cookbook at the end, so you'll be inspired to try Vietnamese cooking back home. Thoroughly recommended!
We were with eight people(a nice small group). The setting on an island near Hoi An in the house of Thõm’s (our teacher cook)mother is perfect. A lovely spot with very nice traditional cooking equipment. We made four dishes that were really delicious. Vegetarian was no problem. We did spring rolls with self made rice paper, papaya salad, an eggplant dish, grilled pork and a fresh tuna dish. The boat trip to the island took about 40 minutes and was also very enjoyable. All in all perfect cooking class.
We had a day with My Grandmas Cooking class in Hoi Ann. We booked it direct through their website, it was highly recommended in the Rough Guide to Vietnam and we thoroughly enjoyed the day. Tom, our guide and teacher for the day spoke excellent English, she was very engaging and worked hard to make sure everyone enjoyed the day. She explained that the island that the cooking class was held on, a 40 minute boat ride from Hoi Ann, was where she was bought up by her grandmother until the age of 18. Her grandmother used to take the classes but she retired a few years ago, she is now 100 years old! Tom has taken over the cooking, using her Grandmother's traditional recipes. The day started in the food market in Hoi Ann, where the different types of fruit, spices , meat, fish, noodles were explained and in some cases tasted. We cooked 4 different dishes, a fresh rice paper, a rice pancake, papaya salad and pork skewers and then we ate them at a communal table or at our work stations. We then returned to Hoi Ann by boat or some people cycled. A great day and well worth the money
Grandma’s cooking is the real deal. A boat took us to an island home where our tour guide Thom said she grew up. She demonstrated the whole rice harvesting process using ancestral tools. We then made rice pancakes over an open flame. She instructed us on how to make papaya salad, rice pancakes, spring rolls and tuna in a clay pot. It was all very organized and we really learned a lot while enjoying Thom and fellow travelers. The kitchen was clean and we were served on beautiful blue and white Vietnamese pottery. Expect to spend many hours!
Thom was the sweetest, you could tell she loves her job. The tour was very well organized and the food was superb. We were stuffed by the end.
We highly enjoyed the experience, everything was well planned and executed above all expectations. Thom our guide and her supporting team were friendly , knowledgeable and professional. The food was delicious and the atmosphere was great. We 100% recommend this tire!
Absolutely fantastic tour / cooking class! Thom was an amazing guide, so informative and fascinating! The food was incredible!! Highly recommend!
This experience was the best we did in Vietnam. Thom was knowledgeable and friendly, we visited her Grandmas island and saw a traditional village. The cooking space was clean and a lovely space. I have made the recipes again since coming home - it’s a lovely memory and we use the knowledge a lot at home. Thank you Thom and family 🙏🏻
Truly an incredible experience not to be missed while you are visiting Hoi An or Danang. Thom, our tour guide, was a gracious host and great teacher. We learned a lot about Vietnam and got to see a slice of life in the countryside away from the city and tourists. Not to mention the food was delicious! This was the best activity we did while visiting.
Absolutely fantastic way to spend a few hours. Thom was lovely and speaks brilliant English. Grandma doesn’t come out of the house these days as she’s 100! The food we made was delicious and the cookbook to take home is a lovely memento.
This tour is authentic and you get a deeper insight into Vietnamese cuisine and culture than most other tours. We had a 3 week trip to Vietnam and our day at Grandma's Home Cooking was certainly one of the highlights. We did the Cooking tour and bike ride which adds another dimension to the day. Apart from surprising yourself at being able to cook mouthwatering food under Thom's instructions, you will appreciate more about Hoi An's environs and get to see things that are off the beaten track and meet interesting locals at work.
This cooking class was such an enjoyable experience for everyone in our family from the non cooks through to the foodies. Thom was an excellent host, providing interesting information and demonstrations of historical as well as current cooking techniques, and keeping a watchful eye throughout the cooking lessons. The food was delicious and we had a fantastic and memorable day, book ended by a lovely boat ride on the river. We have no hesitation in recommending this tour to anyone visiting Hoi An.
My Grandma's Cooking Class in Hoi An was definitely one of the high lights of our trip for the whole family. It was prepared so well and the food was amazing. The boat ride across to Grandma's Home was also a great way to see another aspect of Hoi An. I have all the recipes and hoping to try them for friends and family at home. Thank you for your hospitality.
A superb hands-on introduction to Vietnamese cooking; and an insight into rural life (on an island a 35 minute boat trip from Hoi An). Thom is an outstanding guide and teacher. We prepared and ate four dishes in a delightful rural environment. At €31 it is an absolute bargain. Highly recommended.
Wonderful experience, the best activity I've done so far in Vietnam. Fresh market tour first, Thom introduced different food to us. Then boat trip to her Grandma's house where she and her family demonstrated old cooking ways. Then she talked and demonstrated us through making several food dishes, eating as we finished. Then finally ate last fish and dessert around the table. Wonderful adventure. Highly recommend for anyone who wants to learn more about Vietnamese food and culture. I liked how Thom's family were involved in giving us a high class adventure.
Authentic cooking class with a family vibe. Great journey across the river and a lovely guide in tom.
