Great experience and a very nice and funny guide (Johan if I remember correctly). The tour was about 3 hours, with walking 3km on gravel before getting on the ice (spikes provided). It was an easy walk and pretty icy blue caves to visit. We even had the visit of a seal in the lagoon at the end point of the visit. Highly recommended.

Itinerary
Your adventure begins at the famous Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon, where icebergs drift out to sea. Take time to enjoy the view or visit nearby Diamond Beach before departure. The meeting point is on the east side of the main Jökulsárlón parking lot, where you’ll see Super Jeeps and tour vans. Look for the Arctic Adventures sign - your guide will meet you there and lead you to the Super Jeep (marked either Glacier Mice or Arctic Adventures). Tours leave promptly, so please arrive at least 15 minutes early. Jökulsárlón is a busy area with several parking lots on both sides of the road; allow extra time to park and walk to the meeting point. There are no washrooms at the ice cave, so please use the facilities at Jökulsárlón before we depart.
From the lagoon, climb aboard our specially modified Super Jeep for a scenic ~30 minute drive towards an outlet of Vatnajökull, Europe’s largest glacier. Once we leave the main road, the track becomes off-road and bumpy, adding to the sense of adventure while offering beautiful views of mountains and the surrounding winter landscape. This tour takes you beyond the regular roads, right to the edge of the glacier where the ice cave awaits. Your highly skilled driver-guide will expertly navigate the track so you can buckle up and enjoy the adventure! After the Super Jeep ride, you will be fitted with a helmet and crampons, hear a safety briefing, then be ready to explore.
We arrive at Breiðamerkurjökull, an outlet glacier of Vatnajökull. Here your guide gives a safety briefing and provides all necessary glacier gear before we walk to the cave. The walk is usually 15 minutes each way over uneven, icy ground, but you'll be equipped with crampons to help. The walk is suitable for most people with a normal level of fitness and sturdy hiking shoes. Next, step into an ice cave and see how powerful forces of meltwater and frost shape the glacier from the inside. The colours can range from deep, electric blue to more white or grey tones depending on the light, snowfall and the cave that nature has created this season.

Our guide was fantastic you could tell he loved his job and people. He was very knowledgeable and loved talking about yhe glacier and answered all questions. He was also a very caring person.
After our tour with another company was cancelled due to bad weather, we managed to book with Arctic Adventures the next day and it was an awesome experience. Orri was our guide and we had so much fun with him. He really made the trip was it was.
The ice cave was great! It was very rocky walking there and about a 3/4 mile walk to and back. Once there was still uneven ground but better. My 81 year old mother had a very difficult time. BUT our guide, Addi was AMAZING!! He got her there and helped navigate some of the steeper parts. I would recommend, but it is rated “easy”. It is easy if you are under 50 and have zero mobility issues. If you have ANY mobility issues (hip/knee replacements) I would consider not booking it.
Our experience was superb. Guide (Mart) was terrific: knowledgeable about the formation and history of the ice caves, concerned about safety, helpful, friendly, and generous with his time. Loved it and would recommend to others.
Super guide David!!! Nice walk with a amazing cave
Beautiful but a rugged 3 mile (1.5 out and back). Weather dependent. Our tour was a nice day which got warm with layers. Every season the tour operators find a new cave since the cave from the previous season is unsafe. Would have given a 5 star except for the rugged hike.
This was honestly a once in a lifetime experience and it was a lot of fun. We had an amazing tour guide Mice, he was informative about the glaciers and the area. He was humorous too!
Eddy was a fantastic guide. Very knowledgeable and very funny. Loved going on the glacier and walking into the ice caves. A do not miss experience.
Started on a high expectation from this tour but ended up in disappointment. The tour in itself was okay, we got to see the ice caves which was pretty amazing. The only problem was our tour guide. He was the most uninformative tour guide there is ever. The most annoying part is, he made fun of our group being Asians, as sounding like Minions. He repeated this to the other tour group which made them laugh towards this comment which really made us embarassed. Going back to the Jeep, he rearranged the seating arrangement and thrown our group at the back and placed the Caucasians at the front where we were seated before. I thought he was really being a racist at this point.
Overall a great experience. As we were initially on the wrong pickup point, the organization did the utmost to rebook us and support us. Experienced and very friendly and funny guide. It really adds to the already amazing nature of Iceland.
Very nice tour. We booked with Arctic Adventures and would book again. The guide (AJ) was amazing. He had a lot of fun stories and facts and was extremely informative, funny and helpful. The ice caves were exactly what I was hoping for.
The best experience ever ! Super nice and our guide was great.
I travelled from Italy with my children to take part in a once-in-a-lifetime tour of the Crystal Ice Cave. The morning departure was cancelled by Arctic Adventures without any certification or documentation just 30 minutes before departure via email (not even via WhatsApp, which is at least more direct) when we were already in the car on our way to the location. They suggested rescheduling the tour for the afternoon, which I immediately accepted. When we arrived at the meeting point, a violent gust of wind slammed our car door, injuring a member of our group. We spent an hour in sub-zero temperatures waiting for roadside assistance while taking care of the injured child. We immediately informed Arctic Adventures via WhatsApp, explaining everything in real time. The location indicated was incorrect. Like us, there were at least two other groups who had parked in the wrong place, but they had time to reach the correct car park. Then the situation worsened. They told us to send an email. We did so, but received no reply. We called, but no one answered. We begged them to let us do the tour the next morning, but they replied that they had already made an exception by rescheduling for free, when it was they who had cancelled the morning tour, not us. They strung us along, stalling until the office closed, knowing full well that they had no intention of helping us. The next day, they made a “offer” of a 50% refund, stating, “This offer is made as an exception, particularly as a complimentary reschedule was previously offered but did not fit your travel plans”. This was all false! They never offered anything else. It was possible to put us on the following morning tour, but they refused to do so. The same weather that forced THEM to cancel our morning tour caused our emergency. They used their policy as a shield, showing no humanity. Do not trust this company if you expect to be treated like human beings. They can arbitrarily decide to cancel a tour, say it is for reasons beyond their control (in fact, they are not certified) and then you lose everything! Their response is that it is their policy! They will take your money, cancel your tour and leave you stranded in the cold, literally. An inhumane experience.
We had a terrific experience, especially for the kids. Our guide, Dori was super engaging and our kids loved him. We were given tips on where to take the best photos and my kids became "professional ice surfers". Takk fyrir!
Incredible experience walking on a glacier and experiencing an ice cave! It was busy - several groups all arrive at similar times, so there is a bit of waiting around, but it does allow you to take loads of photos! David was our guide and he was incredibly informative, and tried to find unique things to show us when waiting for other people to get through. It took around 3.5 hours in total. The ice caves were unlike anything we'd ever seen. Our experience was that it wasn't quite long tunnels of ice, but lots of little crevaces and holes to explore. The ice really is as blue as the photos in some places!
By far the best excursion experience I’ve ever had! Dory, our tour guide, was incredibly informative and the journey to the ice caves was amazing
The experience was amazing, walking on the glacier and going into to the crevasses and caves was unforgettable,I would highly recommend!
Hi all. Would highly discourage anyone considering the Crystal ice cave tour out of Jokulsarlon right now. There basically isn’t a cave. It was unfortunate how small the current “cave” is. If I hadn’t of been told it was a cave, I never would have called it that. It’s like a very small tunnel that’s open to the air at much of its very short length. This past summer, the really nice ground based ice cave system was destroyed and now guides have been struggling to get a nice cave again for tour groups to visit. Arctic adventures had a great guide for us, but really should have canceled the tour. The advertisement with the nice photos and descriptions from previous years is really misleading.
The cave was spectacular but the guide was strange, undervalued and not particularly gladly helpful and did not provide context or additional information on the site or ice etc. There were a lot of people in the cave at the same time and often resulted in having to move aside so others could pass diminishing the experience. The other detriment was the cost. It was very expensive considering we spent les than 45 mon in the cave itself and start to finish took less than 2 hours. It was OK but I had higher expectations for the price we paid.
Me and my partner had great fun here! Guides were nice and had good jokes and made the experience more entertaining, for sure :)
Overall the tour was incredible. The guide was knowledgeable and had a great attitude! The only note is that the 20 minutes drive to the cave was in a van that was packed with little room to move.
It was pretty windy walking to the Ice cave. It was regret that the main cave was closed for safety reason. Fortunately some of the areas are pretty good too.
The cave was great, and the tour guide Alex was quite the entertainer. Super informative, fun and Alex’s Raven was quite a highlight!
I'm absolutely amazed with the trip with Artic Adventures and our fabulous guide Andżelika aka. Angel. The trip itself was an extraordinary experience, to see Glacier on my own eyes, such a beautiful place is priceless. Our guide Angel, she was another element of the amazing experience. She explained the details about the Glacier, how old it was, how it was formed etc. She was very kind and in additional she really loves nature what was visible in multiple situations when talking about the weather, nature and Glacier. This experience will be in my heart to the end of my life. Our visit (15.04.2025)
We went to diamond beach & walked around the glacier lagoon before meeting our guide & heading into the glacier. The large chunks of glacier ice on the beach & floating in the lagoon were a site to see. Inside the glacier the ice was glowing blue in various spots & our guide was kind enough to take photos for everyone in the group.
We booked the ice cave tour for 9:30 in the morning, but due to severe snowstorms, the road from our hotel to the meeting point was closed. We called them at 8:00 (when the office opened), and they informed us there was nothing going on, we could easily get there (we couldn't! I have attached a picture of our hotel parking for reference, the roads looked the same). Finally, they agreed to let us rebook to 13:00, hoping the storm would ease down and the roads would be safe again. We drove through the storm to the meeting location, but the parking was closed, a temporary parking location was being created on the beach (very dangerous!). When we tried to park there, a ranger from the national park came to us that we were absolutely not allowed to park there. This was all very confusing. Upon exiting our vehicle, 10 minutes before the agreed meeting time, we received a cancellation in our email because of the bad weather. They probably already knew that morning that the weather was too bad for tours to depart all day, but they made us drive anyway. We saw several cars tipped/on the side of the road due to the hazardous conditions! I understand the Icelandic weather can be very unpredictable, but they should be pro-active in keeping tourists safe, not making them drive unsafe roads and park on hazardous lots.
We had a really nice tour with Lisa. The cave was amazing and we loved it. We needed to ask a little before we found the right company.
Dangerous drivers on the mini buses passing cars in Dangerous condition. We ignored this and despite this booked ice cave with them.. had 4 x 4 and drove all the way from Reykjavik, condition turned road closed by authorities despite fact we could have driven the road as we had 4 x4 . Contacted company and they didn't care..refused to give refund. Don't use them..waste of time and awful customer service.. Don't bother answering me with your generic email response
Do not use this company. Awful customer service care. A party of 9 of us set off on a five-hour journey, 3 hours in despite our best efforts we were turned back door to the extreme weather conditions. We contacted customer services and advised them but were told the weather is unpredictable and that we weren't able to get a refund! We were told we skulls have stayed closer to where the adventure was! The cost implications of booking accommodation for 9 people for one night when we had already paid for an apartment would've been astronomical and not feasible. Our party lead was advised to email the company on our return to find a solution which he did. Only to be patronised in the response from the company. Whilst we appreciate that the weather is unpredictable the company should have provided at least a partial refund. We had all saved for this trip of a lifetime and to lose hard-earned money in this way is devastating. A very poor show indeed. Terrible!
A group of us, 9 in total, had booked a visit. We started from Reykjavik in clear weather with no snow or ice. As we progressed the weather deteriorated and after some 2 hours we hit a blizzard with zero visibility and were turned back by the authorities as the road was blocked. It was impossible for us to continue and positively dangerous. When we contacted the company we were told that they were not responsible for the weather, which is stating the obvious, and they would not return our payment which was the best part of a £1000. They did not offer us an alternative date either. Considering that this was Iceland in January, such conditions are not unusual and I would have thought that basic good will and consideration would have been the least that we could have expected. This is a poor reflection on the venue and on Icelandic tourism. I would advise anyone to treat this company with caution as their policy is to fleece any potential customer. As a matter of principle I intend to contact the relevant Icelandic tourism authority.
We travelled very early in the morning to get to the location however we were caught up in a blizzard and the authorities closed the road..we contacted the company to tell them this and ask for a refund as we were travelling home the following day...they refused and said they were not responsible for the weather.... don't bother booking with this company..very poor customer service
I recently went on an ice cave tour with Arctic Adventures earlier this month and while it was an interesting experience, the tour didn’t meet my expectations. First of all, the cave we visited was not the same as advertised on the website. I understand the original blue ice cave collapsed in August 2024, but there was no prior notice about the change in location. The alternative cave was much less impressive, with most of the areas lit by electric lights instead of the natural blue glow we were hoping for. Additionally, the tour was supposed to be three hours as advertised on their website, but we only spent two hours in total, which included the round-trip car ride to the glacier. The tour itself felt rushed, and there wasn’t enough time to properly enjoy the cave or take photos, especially since my friends and I were traveling in a group of three. So to conclude, the overall tour didn't match the expectations set by the website, and I left feeling disappointed. Given the false advertising and rushed nature of the tour, I wouldn't consider doing it again.
Beautiful cave with natural light. Great spot for pictures but don’t forget to enjoy the moment. It is cold but worth it.
This highly recommended trip with an overnight stay in Arctic Adventures hotel, was fantastic. Ronan, our guide was friendly, helpful and knowledgeable. The hotel was comfortable and the food was very good (especially the lamb). We stopped at a number of waterfalls (Seljalandsfoss Waterfall, Skogafoss Waterfall and 2 smaller but beautiful falls with fewer visitors), the lava field and the black sand beach. The highlight was the visit to the Crystal Ice Cave and Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon with nearby diamond beach, which was stunning! We were treated to such incredible scenery and learnt loads.
Our guide Lisa was THE BEST, the caves were well worth 30 minute the hike up the glacier in spikes. We had the best experience!! Book and enjoy!!
Amazing experience! Our guide was responsible, he explained everything to us, and could answer any questions. He never rushed us and it was actually one of the best side of this experience being able to meet him!
Laura gave us great information and safety guidance. She was funny and helpful! Great picture taking opportunities - easy walk to and on the glacier. In the ice cave you have to let your eyes adjust then it's amazing to see!
PLEASE AVOID THIS COMPANY AT ALL COSTS. There are many tour companies and if you want to do business with ethical ones then there are plenty of others. short story - you need hiking boots to do this tour. I only had tennis shoes. I asked the chatGPT bot on their website if I could rent boots for this tour and it informed me that I could and quoted me an actual price on renting them. Then I couldn't add them to my cart - and the bot informed to email after the booking to get the boots. I did so. It turns out THEY DON'T RENT BOOTS AT ALL for this tour. I emailed and called multiple times the day before the tour and they never answered me. Finally - the morning of the tour I got in touch with them on the phone and the lady (her name is Aliona) informed me that they don't even rent boots for the tour and I would not be allowed to go. I proceeded to email customer service to let them know about their chatbot misrepresenting to me and even quoting me prices for the rental boots. They have now proceeded to inform me that it's my fault and I should've known they don't rent boots, and their cancellation policy states no refunds before 24 hours before the tour, which is when I booked it. I sent them the chat transcript showing them where the chatbot lied and misrepresented them and said if the chatbot had only told me they didn't rent boots then I never would've booked the tour, but it actually told me they did rent boots and gave me a price and so I proceeded. Over and over they continue to tell me that it's my fault and that their chatbot doesn't actually represent them as a company and it's for informational purposes only - even though it quotes you prices for tours, gear, etc, and they installed it on their website. Iceland is amazing, and bring hiking boots for crampons instead of tennis shoes, but please do me a favor and let's let this company go out of business and do business with companies that understand how ethical business should be ran. They've admitted to me in writing that the chatbot said the wrong thing and yet they're hiding behind their 'cancellation policy' and stating it's my fault that I didn't get in touch with them before booking, even though the chatbot told me to email after booking. tl;dr - Even when they acknowledge in writing that they messed up they will still keep your money. They informed me that they rent boots for this tour so I booked and tried to rent boots. Then after I booked they inform me they don't rent boots for this tour and I can't have a refund. <--- all of this is acknowledged by them in writing. They're going to respond to this and say "We're so sorry this happened blah blah blah here's what you did wrong" but all they had to do was issue me a refund and they won't - even though the tour went fine and I was a last minute booking that wouldn't have been filled. They have even told me a week after I returned that I did not show up to the tour to give a good showing and that there would be others that could've rented me boots at the meeting point of all of the other companies. How silly. I was 15 mins from the meeting point and I called them in the morning and I was told I would not be allowed to go on the tour. They never told me on the phone that I could rent boots from another company. In fact, she told me if I showed up then they wouldn't let me go anyways. Seriously - this has been the most maddening experience. Choose a different company - ALL of the tours meet at the same place and the guides jump around to different tour companies and you go to the same spots so they're all relatively the same. Just please pick a company with better ethics if that matters to you.
This tour was so cool (no pun intended 😉)! We had the best time. Our guide Tom was friendly, knowledgeable and made us feel taken care throughout the entire experience. It was very cold and windy - dress accordingly. The caves were so blue. We also learned that this is one of the few places in the world you can view ice caves. Thank you, Tom and Arctic Adventures for a once and a lifetime experience!
We had a great time on this excursion. Our tour guide Helga was fantastic and taught us all about Icelandic wildlife, nature and history on the drive to and from the glacier in her super jeep. The cave itself was really interesting and definitely worth a visit. Not so blue as some of the pictures you see but our guide even knew where the best photo spots were to make the colours really come to life!
We really enjoyed our Crystal Cave Tour- operated by South East Iceland tour company. Our driver and guide Tom was super helpful, fun and friendly. There was a family with a child on our tour and Tom was so helpful with her and made sure she was safe and able to participate. The super jeep was great, and had new tech which made reaching and driving on the glacier quick and easy (Tom didn’t have to get out to release the pressure in the tyres, like some other tour operators) the whole experience from start to finish was well organised and we felt we got the most out of our day- the ice caves in the glacier were truly amazing to experience and see first hand. It was a highlight of Iceland for us on our winter trip. We have great photos to remember it by and had a really great experience through these tour companies. Would highly recommend.
Overall, the tour we took was wonderful. We were provided with all of the appropriate gear and training by our guide, Snorri (not sure if I spelled this correctly). Snorri was entertaining and knowledgeable. We had a lovely time and saw so many beautiful things. The reason that I knocked one star off is because I felt the caves we saw on our tour looked nothing like the ones in the photos. We were expecting to see a huge cavern/large space made of ice and really only saw smaller spaces that only 1-2 people could fit in. I'm not sure why ours was different, but we were a little disappointed.
My initial tour at Skaftafell was cancelled, and seeing a blue ice cave was really something I wanted to do, so I booked the Jokulsarlon Ice Cave tour. It was exactly as described. We got in the Super Jeep, made our way to a parking lot, then walked another 20 to 25 minutes to the ice caves. By god, there really was blue in there! Our guide, Tom, was a decent bloke. Very professional about everything from safety to actual guiding. Also, really knowledgeable about the landscape & the caves. It definitely was a unique experience, and I'm glad to have done it!
While our entire time in Iceland was amazing, this experience really stood out. Bjork was a wonderful guide and did a fantastic job. She patiently took everyone's phone to take amazing pictures for everyone. Outside of the tour - she even gave us some tips to see the Northern Lights - which totally worked that evening. It was an awesome experience and we will certainly return the next time we travel to Iceland.
We booked the Ice Cave/Glacier Hike tour because of the great reviews we read online. I can’t speak to how good or bad this tour was because we never went. There was a terrible rain storm with very high winds the day that we had booked our tour. We called Arctic Adventures multiple times and left messages, but no one answered or called us back. Finally, someone replied to our email (a half hour before the tour was supposed to leave). They told us that they would not reschedule us or provide any type of refund because the weather experts in Iceland deemed it “safe” to go, and Iceland is known for being rainy and windy. This seemed crazy because we couldn’t even leave our hotel safely, much less drive to the caves and go on a hiking tour. We continued arguing for days until someone from Arctic Adventures finally told us that our tour had gone as scheduled and was perfectly fine for everyone else except for us, so we had no grounds to dispute any charges. We asked 3 different times to speak to a manager, and not one representative would forward our request to their management team. We ended up booking another tour for the next day with a different company, which was fantastic. But here’s the kicker… the guides for the other company told us that we were the first tour to actually go out in the past couple of days because the run-off from the rainstorm was so bad that you couldn’t even reach the caves! This other company had issued full refunds for everyone who booked over the past couple of days. Afterwards, we talked to other local guides from different companies and found out that the trails to the caves were completely closed off for the past day because the entire area was flooded! Arctic Adventures is disgusting and I would not recommend them to my worst enemy. Don’t automatically trust them just because they are rated as one of the best. I don’t know how they don’t have terrible reviews, but there are plenty of other local companies who are wonderful and actually honorable. If you’re thinking about booking with Arctic Adventures, my only advice is to RUN!!!
It is a lifetime experience you must do in your life. Our guide, Bjork was entertaining and informational. She is great behind the wheels taking us through the rough terrains. She clarified any questions or details we asked her about Iceland. We got crampoons and helmets (you will need it to keep your head in one piece as you crawl through caves) once we got down near the ice caves path. Don't forget to get your gloves, beanies and face scarves as it was windy and the snow pierced through our faces. The tour lasted for 3 hours and the only downside was that the ice caves didn't really look like the pictures or maybe it was my misconception of the ice caves. But they are still beautiful.
We had a lot of trouble deciding which ice cave tour to do as we couldn't see a lot of up to date (or positive) reviews with actual feedback on the caves themselves. We therefore booked the one that most suited us for time and place etc and hoped for the best based on the older review. Let me tell you, I'm glad we booked this particular tour. We had a very comfortable and luxurious feeling superjeep. Our guide, Axel, was very funny and very informative. We had a great time chatting to him and he answered all of our questions. The guide explained to us that they have access to a couple of caves, and the one they take you to depends on the weather conditions at the time. The day we went, was extremely windy, so there was only one cave saefly accessible to us. Unfortunately, this meant it was also the safest for most of the other groups visting at that time, so it was very busy and crowded. Despite this, the groups all operate on a first in first served manner, so we would wait outside for the group in front to finish before entering. This is a good system as it allows the smaller groups time to themselves and opportunities for photos etc without people absolutely everywhere, however it also means there is a bit of waiting time between seeing things. Axel kept us entertained with information about the glacier and the ice, and you're still in a moulin while waiting so it's still beautiful and interesting. The caves themselves are now more of a series of moulins and a small cave, not like what's pictured in the guide photos. However, this isn't unexpected as the caves are completely up to mother nature and different every year. It's an overall really cool experience and we really enjoyed it. My partner and I would recommend this to anyone on the fence!
We thoroughly enjoyed our trip. Our guide Axel made the experience come to life by imparting lots of interesting details about the glacier and Iceland in general. Highly recommended 10/10 👌
Awesome experience! Have never seen anything like it and Bjork was incredible the whole time - keeping it very informative and funny :) Would 100% recommend.
