Itinerary
Experience traditional Japanese culture in a peaceful 300-year-old temple in Miyajima. Put on your favorite kimono, enjoy an authentic Matcha tea ceremony hosted by a tea master, and taste unique local treats in a historical setting. Step 1: Dress Up in Kimono Begin your experience by choosing your favorite kimono from a wide variety of colors, designs, and sizes. We provide everything you need to get dressed. Step 2: Table-Style Tea Ceremony (Ryurei-shiki) Enjoy a table-style tea ceremony (Ryurei-shiki) seated comfortably on chairs—no need to sit on the floor. First, watch a tea master perform the ceremony, where Matcha is served in authentic Miyajima-yaki (local Miyajima pottery) alongside local Miyajima chocolate. Next, try making your own Matcha tea using a traditional Kyo-yaki (Kyoto-style pottery) tea bowl, served with traditional Konpeito (rock glass candies). Step 3: Photo Time in the Japanese Garden After the tea ceremony, enjoy taking photos in your kimono throughout the peaceful temple grounds and Japanese garden to capture your unforgettable memories.

I was able to book the experience as part of my Hiroshima part of the trip. The experience is a must and a highlight on the trip. Allow enough time to explore the island and this activity. As soon as I was welcome, the next step was kimono dressing. They have several selection of colors that you can pick and they took several pictures with the kimono After that, a master did the tea ceremony and explained every step. Probably the best part was the application and creation of my own tea.
This is the place to experience tea ceremony and to rent a kimono. I originally only wanted to go for the first thing out of these two, but then I got convinced. And I'm very glad I did. This whole experience is one of my most fun and the most memorable experiences on my trip in Japan. The ladies working at the place are very nice, fluent in English and almost pro photographers. You can buy some local souvenirs at the shop at the reception. I really wanted to make a reservation for me ahead of my visit, but it was just not possible - I didn't see any system to do this through. Luckily, when I arrived, there was just one other couple having interest in the tea ceremony, so I just needed to wait to the starting time of the closest ceremony, not for some other round of it.
Besides going through a formal tea ceremony, getting fully fitted in ceremonial custom wsa one of the highlights of our Japan trip
We had a wonderful time with Okeiko! 徳寿寺 temple on Miyajima is the perfect relaxed (and highly traditional) setting for careful kimono dressing and the tea ceremony. We all felt personally catered to and loved each of our hosts attentiveness to detail. Highly recommend this experience as opposed to a busy setting like Kyoto or Tokyo. 💕
Such a lovely and wonderful experience! The ladies made me feel so welcome and I felt so beautiful in my kimono, the process of putting on the kimono was a big part of the experience! The tea ceremony was a great traditional experience. I would definitely recommend this experience!
Having never been to a tea service before, we has no expectations. The overall experience was incredible; the ceremonial attire that we were dresses in were beautiful - took lots of pictures, the actual tea ceremony, and the beautiful items in the gift / souvenir shop. We each but tea bowls choosing ones that matches our personalities.
We had a FANTASTIC time! They were very kind, cute, friendly and sweet people. It was an amazing experience for us. If you are going to Miyajima, you should definitely experience this.Thank you so much!
We had an amazing kimono and tea ceremony experience in the morning. The temple was beautiful and we got really nice photos in the garden. Also, we learned about the four principles of tea-making in Buddhism and is a must-do for anyone looking for a traditional Japanese experience.
This was one of the highlights of our 3 weeks in Japan. The place was so serene, calm and relaxing. We were very happy to be dressed up in a Kimono and the time and patience of the two ladies who dressed us was amazing. The ceremony was really well done and its so nice to learn something about this aspect of Japanese culture. Highly recommended.
My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed the experience of dressing in a kimono and participating in a tea ceremony. The staff were friendly and welcoming!
My family and I did the tea ceremony and kimono experience and really enjoyed it. The tea house was beautiful and the staff were very kind, accommodating and although it was a tourist experience it felt as authentic as possible. The kimonos were gorgeous and very high quality. I would recommend the tour as an immersive Japanese experience.
Lovely place in a temple to discover the proper way to put a Kimono and how to drink tea in a tea ceremony. Sweets were good and there is plenty of choices of Kimono. Very welcoming staff, I had a lovely time.
there are many reasons to take a day strolling around itsukushima island [the prominent 'floating' tori certainly draws a crowd looking for 'selfies'] - but tucked away in a cul de sac a few hundred meters away from the jetties is a peaceful / quiet / unpretentious building that affords an opportunity to savor the experience of being introduced to a genuine tea ceremony - the kimono attire is a must if you really wish to immerse yourself in this ancient practice - patient guidance is politely provided by both the instructor & interpreter [you will make a few errors = nothing to be embarrassed about] & if you 'go with the flow' you will enjoy the exercise all the more - the serenity of the setting certainly provides for an enjoyable / reflective pause from your usual hectic [or humdrum] world - as i am 'wont to say' [google it!] = "well worth the price of admission" - and while you are there do take a little time to appreciate the beauty of the attached gardens - ありがと.
I absolutely LOVED this experience! The ladies were so kind and gentle and made me feel very comfortable! While i performed it on my own they even recorded for me and sent to me through Instagram. I ended up buying an elegant tea set ! So excited !
I visited with friends as a group of four, and we were treated so specially: dressed in full kimono, shown the art of tea ceremony and then taught how to perform the steps ourselves, and then given plenty of time to ask questions and take pictures to share.
We had a wonderful experience. All staff were professional and supportive. Not to mention, it was a lot of fun.
I loved everything about it. The ladies were so friendly and it was beautiful to get dressed for the ceremony. I only wished we would have sat on the floor, but for tourists they have set up tables.
A long time ago I did tea ceremony (Sado) in highschool in Japan. This was as close to a real Japanese tea ceremony as I have seen in a tourist environment. If you are on Miyajima, and want to try some relaxed tea and see an authentic ceremony, I highly recommend this one. I also encourage you to bring your questions, its a great time to ask them.
I would definitely recommend this experience if you have time during your visit in Miyajima! The entire experience is near a small temple which is off the beaten path and away from the hustle and bustle of the main business streets. It offered the tranquillity you would expect of island life and let you experience Japanese traditional culture at its finest. The ladies here are well versed in English and super helpful in getting you dressed up in your kimonos and will help you take as many fun photos as you want! The tea ceremony itself was also amazing as they explained every step of the process and how to best enjoy your matcha, after which you get to do it all yourself!
The staff was very kind!!! They explain a lot of the tea ceremony and culture and are very interactive with guests and very knowledgeable about any questions you have. Also, they allow you to take photos and take photos of you during the ceremony and video if you like which is perfect to share on social media or with family back home!!! I highly recommend this for people who are visiting the Hiroshima area and want to get involved in a Japanese custom. It was really enjoyable and I would diff. Love to come back!!!
An unforgettable experience! The tea ceremony was a serene and beautiful tradition, expertly conducted. Wearing a kimono added a layer of elegance and authenticity. The hosts were welcoming and knowledgeable, making the entire event feel special. Highly recommended for anyone looking to deeply connect with Japanese culture.
We had a great time. They were very attentive. The ceremony was fun and relaxing. My wife looked great in her kimono! Nice grounds and Temple.
Had a great time. They were very attentive and the ceremony was very relaxing. Plus my wife looked great in her kimono.
Such a special experience for our family. We loved dressing up in kimonos and taking pictures in the beautiful garden. The kids loved the tea ceremony! We went with another couple and 5 kids total. The ladies were so patient and kind with us! Would recommend this experience to anyone!
We had a lovely experience wearing the kimonos and having the tea experience. The chocolate we were given before tea was heavenly. The kimonos were so beautiful. The hosts were so kind and gave us a warm welcome and an once in a lifetime experience. I recommend trying it while on the island, especially if you are a foreigner that wouldn't come across this ritual on a regular basis at home.
The whole experience was excellent. The staff were the most polite and friendly you could ask for. They were very helpful, patient and were happy to assist with a few pictures etc. we were a group of six and we were in a small party with another group of six which was perfect size. We also managed to leave a bag behind and they went out of their way to contact us before we left the island. The kimonos (both male and female) were lovely fabrics and were expertly fitted to each of us. Also in a beautiful setting. Thoroughly recommend.
It was a very peaceful and fun event. We appreciated their care in dressing for the ceremony and the setting for the pictures and ceremony was very moving. It provided a great insight into the culture.
Such lovely and memorable experience. The kimono dressing was a ritual on its own, and the staff was so friendly and caring. The tea ceremony was formal and highly educational. So happy we booked this experience. 😍
It was a wonderful experience for us. The staff was really kind, very polite and helped us a lot with the Kimonos. They explained stepwise the traditional tea ceremony. It was a place of silence and relaxation. We enjoyed it very much. We are happy that we booked it at Okeiko Japan! We can recommend the original Miyajima chocolate as well. They were delicious 🍫 😋
Amazing experience! Definitely need to put on your to do list. The ladies were so patient with our group and the English speaking translator was exceptional. Small groups so get a personalised feeling. Dressing in Kimono made it feel so real and they let us walk around the ground and take lots of photos. Believe this experience was way better than a large group in a bigger city like Kyoto.
This activity was the absolute highlight of our stay in Hiroshima/ Miyajima. I cannot recommend this highly enough if you want a truly cultural experience of Japan. The ladies who run this experience are delightful and speak excellent English. They assist you in putting on a kimono, then take you through a tea ceremony with a full demonstration, followed by your individual experience of performing your own tea ceremony. This is complimented by local chocolates. Following the ceremony there is an opportunity to take photographs in their beautiful gardens.
Wonderful experience with the kimono dressing a real gem The two ladies are so pleasant kind and efficient Made the whole experience enjoyable The tea ceremony was amazing experience into Japanese culture
We were kindly welcomed into the residence, and went through a dressing process for our kimono. All of us came out looking grand in our attire. Next the various ceremonies including chocolate, tea, etc. Our host were friendly, helpful and so kind. Great experience, off the beaten track to find and worth exploring thereafter. Tremendous afternoon and highly recommended. Loved the chocolates!
Not going would be the mistake. Overall a welcoming, educational and culturally immersive experience that made a lovely addition to a beautiful trip.
I liked the way we got to choose a kimono that fit and were carefully dressed. The tea ceremony was very interesting. The staff were helpful and even came to find me before the event. The large number of pictures they took make a lovely souvenir of my visit.
Wonderful experience to dress in traditional kimonos and participate in tea ceremony. The staff were so helpful and courteous
My daughters had a fantastic experience with the incredible ladies at Okeiko Japan on Miyajima. They were made to feel very special and the whole experience is something they will never forget. Just magic.
I had so much fun dressing in a kimono, posing for pictures and then being a part of the tea ceremony. The staff were helpful and friendly.
This was a fabulous experience. The ladies patiently dressed us in our kimonos. Then went through the tea experience with us. It was a lovely thing to do
This was an incredible experience. One of the big things I wanted to do while I was in Japan was be apart of an authentic tea ceremony and they delivered on all fronts. The staff really made us feel comfortable and that we made the most out of the experience.
A wonderfully memorable experience. Thank you so much. The hostesses were kind & welcoming. So glad I booked this. I highly recommend!
Nice experience of wearing a traditional kimono (colour of our own choice) and seeing and practicing a tea ceremony ourselves. Includes enough opportunity to have our own photoshoot.
It was a very special and beautiful experience! The ladies were super supportive and dressed us up with so much love. everything was done without any rush, we had time to choose our favorite style. The tea ceremony was very interesting and the matcha tasted great. The pictures they took are memories to last forever of this amazing day. Definitely recommend 👍👍Much love from Austria!
We were wowed! Beautiful venue and a very intimate experience. Lovely and peaceful garden and grounds. It's just off the beaten track and easy to find. Our hosts were amazing and the tea ceremony was just perfect. The kimonos were very high quality. This experience is not like the other rent-a-kimono experiences, we had our own private space and 3 ladies helped us to dress. I was worried about wearing Kimono as I am tall and a size 18 but they were able to cater for me. Overall I could not have asked for more. Thank you to the ladies there for providing an experience we will never forget.
It was a memorable experience and certainly a highlight of our trip to Miyajima. The staff were knowledgeable, friendly and kind. I would certainly recommend this experience to anyone.
What a wonderful experience to have with my family. Such a professional, friendly and memorable experience. Thoroughly recommend
We went here as a family with our two teenagers in Sept.2023. The tour starts off with changing into the kimonos, you can select the color of the kimono and belt which is nice. Then we took many pictures outside in the beautiful gardens in various poses. Next is the tea ceremony where we get a nice chocolate and some sweets. We also got to make our own tea, where you learn about the traditions and how to hold the tea cup, the utensils used etc.. The guides were all fabulous and very friendly. They also gave out a nice origami souvenier at the end. I would highly recommend this cultural experience if you are ever in Miyajima!
Wonderful experience with a very friendly and welcoming staff. Dressing in kimono’s and the teaceremony itself was great.
Really pleasant experience. The venue is easy to find and not far from the ferry terminal. You pick your kimono (or male equivalent) and then the staff will help you get changed. The tea ceremony is very interesting. You watch the ceremony, which was explained to us in English (in our case). You then learn how to drink the tea in the proper manner and then learn a basic form of the ceremony yourself. Staff then helped us take some photos in the pretty garden. All staff were very helpful and kind.
