We had a great time in this cultural experience. We arrived late because we couldn't find the location (the landmark in the instructions had not been updated), but they graciously let us participate. It did take a chunk of time out of our Miyajima Island day, but getting to experience the kimono, calligraphy, and tea ceremony all in one was worthwhile. They even took a lot of pictures for us afterwards.

The tea experience was thorough, going through each of the steps with explanation and reverence for the Japanese history and tradition. The dressers were very respectful and did not hurry the client, but included hair jewelry, different obi styles and kimonos that flattered the client The calligraphy class was instructive, but, of necessity provided just an introduction with encouragement, good brushes and ink, and an interested and interesting teacher We had fun and enjoyed every minute
We had an amazing time at Okeiko. The ladies who ran the experience were very experienced, incredibly kind, and wonderful to talk to. They helped us pick our kimonos and assessories, expertly dressed us, and then took photos and videos in the temple grounds, which were shared with us afterwards. After photos were taken, we proceeded with the tea ceremony. The ladies talked us through the process and shared tea with us before we got an opportunity to make matcha tea ourselves. Finally we practised caligraphy before we picked our preferred kanji and painted it our own shamoji, which we got to take home with us. We truly had an amazing time, and we're taking home many memories to cherish. I strongly recommend this experience to anyone visiting Miyajima.
This was an amazing event. It was so much fun getting dressed up in the Kimono's the ladies were very kind getting us dressed, going out into the beautiful gardens and having our pictures was great! the pictures that was taken was wonderful to have. Learning the reasoning and how to do the tea ceremony was fun. And then actually making our tea was a lot of fun! However We were unable to finish both cups of matcha tea :-( we do apologize for that. We had a wonderful teacher for our calligraphy, Yuko was very patient with us. All the ladies spoke wonderful English that was wonderful. The surprise for us was all the pictures that you took of us during the day, it was wonderful to have.
This is a MUST try when visiting Hiroshima. This place offer such a lovely and unique experience which you will remember for a long long time. I was here back in 2018 and in 2025 I went back, because I had such great memories. And the second time was just as magical. The staff is so kind and lovely and you feel very very welcome. You get to learn a lot of interesting things, and you will get a very unique experience trying some of the special Japanese traditions. I really recommend everyone going to Japan visiting this place!
The ladies provided a warm and inviting tea ceremony experience. Memories to last a lifetime! Dressing in the kimonos was amazing and they take great care of you!
We had a really great experience. Our host was really kind and took a lot of pictures for us. The experience was really nice. I would definitely do it again.
This excursion was a highlight of our trip. Even the men in our group enjoyed it. Definitely worth the ferry to Miyajima.
This experience was easily one of the highlights of our trip. My friend loved putting on the kimono robes and sandals. I wish I had lost a little weight before this but I was glad they had my size and I was able to fit the robes as well. The whole tea ceremony was super interesting because every move is thought through. The calligraphy was fun, too, even though it's not as easy as it looks. The photo shoot was great fun, too! I appreciate the two ladies working there as they were very kind and pleasant and laughed along with us. This is a must do when visiting Japan1
Great experience, learning about tea and calligraphy. It was awesome to also put the Kimono on and take photos, the staff was very friendly.
Everyone was amazing! We got there very early because it was so hot outside and they let us sit and wait. They had a lot of cool stuff in their shop too. There is a large selection of beautiful kimono to choose from. And they took so many pictures of us. We really enjoyed watching the tea ceremony and then being able to practice it. And they were very patient with us as we practiced our calligraphy skills. Everyone agreed afterwards that this was the highlight of our trip. The only downside was that they share the pictures they took through Instagram which I think is not an issue for most people, but my group didn't have it so I had to download the app to get the pictures. But the people, service and experience were a 10/10
The most memorable parts of this experience was the hospitality and relaxed environment while learning japanese culture.
An amazing experience with Kimono Outfits a Tea ceremony and a fantastic calligraphy lesson The staff were so friendly and authentic
Loved being dressed in a kimono we had lots of pictures taken during the entire tour. Making tea was interesting and trying to write a few symbols in Japanese was a lot harder than it looked. Our efforts on wooden spoons were beautifully wrapped for a souvenir
Our group did the kimono, tea ceremony and calligraphy workshop and had the most wonderful experience. The people were so friendly, patient and lovely and they explained the tea ceremony and the calligraphy process really well. We booked through Klook and there were no issues, it all worked seamlessly. We had a wonderful time and it was worth coming to Miyajima to experience this!
This was one of our highlights of our trip in Japan. They were so kind and made the experience very enjoyable. We learned a lot, had fun and it was an added perk to wear a kimono! I highly recommend.
What a great experience, ladies were lovely and really helpful. Would recommend as this was very different,
Dear okeikoJapan Miyajima, thank you very much for the great cultural experience we had at your lovely zen temple. It was great learning about the tea ceremony as well as customising our own lucky scoops using Japanese calligraphy. The treat was exceptional and we loved the pictures you took and shared with us after. Very recommended!
This was an amazing experience and a brilliant introduction to Japan. The friendly and polite staff help you dress into a Kimono of your choice and and take as many photos of you in their gorgeous garden as you please. You get to participate in a tea ceremony first hand and then enjoy a guided lesson on how to brew some yourself. The session ends with an introduction to Japanese calligraphy and you get to keep what you make as a souvenir. We would recommend this to adults who are looking for an authentic Japanese cultural experience in a quiet corner of Miyajima Island. The staff speak fluent English.
We took the tour in the second day or our stay in Japan, when visiting the Miyajima Island. Once we arrived to the Ferry Station, it was easy to find the place, using Google Maps in our phones. Walking through the narrow streets of Miyajima, allowed us to get an extra taste of the local environment.. we were even able to see some wild deers!. When we arrived to Okeiko Japan for the Tea Ceremony, Kimono and Calligraphy experience, we were received by Keiko San and Yuka San, who were fantastic hosts. They were very kind to recommend very beautiful typical Kimonos and to help us to dress up. The Tea Ceremony was solemn and very well explained by the Tea Master, who also taught us step by step to prepare some matcha tea, both in English and Japanese. After we finished the Tea Ceremony, we were invited to visit the gardens of the Shrine at their facilities, were you can take fantastic photos!. Yuka San and Keiko San, were very patient during the Calligraphy class, showing us the techniques, adequate posture and the use of the band to protect the Kimono's sleeves. We learnt how to draw our favorite Kanji and also to write our name in Katakana on a beautiful souvenir. They were so kind also to allow us to practice our Japanese (which is very basic, by the way), making us to feel more confident for the rest of our trip. Don't miss the opportunity to buy some of the souvenir available at the store, which are unique! (specially the beautiful deers in Kimono), so you can bring home a nice memory of the experience. We definitely would love to take the experience again!. Big thanks to Okeiko staff for a fantastic experience in Miyajima. Best regards Mónica and Juan
Ww absolutely adored this experience. I would recomend it to absolutely anyone and everyone to do it. Everyone was extremely kind ! We loved it, thank you!
We had an amazing time here with kimono tryon, tea cermony and calligraphy! The staff were very friendly, patient and helpful. They also took many beautiful pictures and videos of us, and encouraged us to do the same. This was one of the best experiences we had on our trip to Japan.
What a beautiful experience. We absolutely loved it. A short walk up a quiet street and then you arrive at the serene location. Beautiful traditional garden and building with wild deer wandering past. We were a family of 2 adults and 2 teens and really enjoyed choosing and dressing in kimono (very special for the men and women). We then had a very tranquil and informative tea ceremony including trying ourselves followed by a calligraphy lesson. The hosts were very kind, patient and informative. The whole experience was just beautiful and we all left relaxed, happy and touched by the warmth of Japanese people and culture. I would definitely recommend. Such a contrast to the busy area and atmosphere near the ferry terminal.
Most memorable experience for my niece and me. Noriko-San shared our excitement as they helped us choose our kimonos and dressed us. They also patiently took lots of photos for us and let us take our time in the garden so we could take hundreds more! Highly recommended for girls of all ages!
After adventuring around Japan for a few weeks, my mom and I were pretty tired and wanted a rest day but had already booked this experience. We went back and forth on skipping it or not but ultimately we just decided to get on the shinkansen from Shin-Osaka at 6am and make our way to Miyajima. We are SO glad we did!! This was definitely a highlight of our trip! The grounds of the temple were so pretty and everyone was so friendly and welcoming upon us first showing up. We started by getting dressed in kimono (you get to pick from a few in your size), socks, obi, cord, flower etc all with help of course. For a girly girl, "dress up" is always fun, let alone learning and getting to put on something beautiful and steeped in culture and tradition. From there we had a great tea ceremony where we learned so many little intricacies of the tea ceremony from first watching and then by doing. We whisked our own matcha after learning the mannerisms. The tea bowls were by local artisans and absolutely gorgeous! After this, we went to the calligraphy room and practiced some kanji but also our names :) Throughout the entire cultural experience, pictures were being taken of us which is so appreciated. I definitely recommend this experience!
An excellent combination of activities in a beautiful place! We experienced a super interesting afternoon and great hospitality at Okeiko. It’s both serieus (the ceremony) and fun and interactive. The explanation in English was excellent so we have a better understanding of this part of Japanese culture now. Alle the (family) pictures taken were a great bonus and a lovely memory of this special day. Highly recommend!
I've book the tea ceremony and calligraphy lesson incl. wearing Kimono. I can highly recommend this place. The staff is very professional and the event is well organized. I love that experience!
We loved this experience! We really enjoyed learning about Japanese calligraphy and the tea ceremony. The hosts are fantastic very kind and lovely. The experience of wearing an original kimono was amazing we loved it. Everything was absolutely fantastic; we will recommend to everybody! Thank you for this amazing experience and for all the fabulous photos.
I had an amazing day in Miyajima! I started the day off hiking up the mountain and then spending the afternoon at the old temple. Wow, you get it all in one day with a great setting. The ladies at the temple, were funny, kind and spoke great English. We started off with dressing up and taking pictures (they sent more than 30 pictures). We continued with Calligraphy and finished with the tea ceremony. They took all the activities in the most professional manner, yet they were light and funny. The tea ceremony was very interesting and I really appreciated that. Given the many places to join a tea ceremony, I think this is pretty much the best place to do so.
We loved this experience so much! Spending the afternoon being beautifully dressed, learning about calligraphy and experiencing the tea ceremony with such kind and wonderful hosts made this day the most memorable of our 3-week vacation in Japan! The location is also very beautiful. We learned so much about Japanese culture. We love that we could take back home our calligraphy artwork and now we are looking forward to the beautiful photos in the garden. I will definitely recommend this experience to everybody traveling to Japan! Thank you so much!!!
For a reasonable price, you can enjoy and learn how matcha tea is traditionally prepared, also, they make pictures for you and friends and send them all to your e-mail account. Japanese calligraphy class is also included and you can spend a good time trying to write Kanji. At the end you get your writings in a wooden spoon as a sourvenir. Is really nice experience.
It is an excellent, fun and enjoyable experience. My husband and I with other four person travel together signed up for the Tea Ceremony and Calligraphy. The staffs are very professional, charming and welcoming. I highly recommend to fellow traveler.
I was lucky enough to be the only participant at that time slot, so I had the luxury of three lovely ladies guide me through the experience. It is located on the beautiful island of Miyajima, in a very beautiful old building. I coudln't have asked for a better experience!
It was a really great activity. We were with our teenagers aged 12, 15 and 17 and they had also a really great time. National dresses were beautiful. The calligraphy experience was really good, as well as the tea ceremony. The staff is very kind and they speak good English. I strongly recommend
Well worth a visit, very welcoming, the national dress, the calligraphy lesson, and the tea ceremony, all enjoyable. If you visit the island make it your priority. An hour and a half very well spent.
My sister recommended the experience after 2 separate visits and we were not disappointed! My partner and I made a last minute decision to do the Cultural Experience set of 3 which included the Kimono dressing, Japanese Calligraphy, Tea Ceremony & Cooking class! Everyone was so wonderful, patient and answered any and all our questions. The morning flew by because we were having such a wonderful time and immersed in our surroundings. If you are ever on Miyajima I highly recommend you take the time to visit and participate because this is beautiful way to experience Japanese culture. Oh and even more amazing is they send you photos they have taken while you are participating in the activities! Thank you so much for the wonderful experience and memories we will always cherish!
It was an amazing activity, we began by changing into kimonos, then the hostesses taught us how to write hiragana and katakana (we could sign them and take them back home), then we had a tea ceremony with all the explanations. It made my day and we are full of great memories (and full of photos taken by the hostesses) I totally recommend this activity if you visit miyajima
We were three guys going here on our holiday trip and were wondering if this would be kind of awkward. The two lovely ladies who worked there put our worries to shame. Everything was done at a perfect pace and with the right mixture of dignity and fun. Everything went along at a good pace, which let us try out caligraphy and a mini tea ceremony without rushing through and without getting bored. The staff took photos, both with their own camera and with our phone cameras. We got to take home our works of caligraphy art, as well as plenty of photos and good memories. We felt we got a unique insight into some japanese traditions, with some intersting backstory and information. We were the only ones there, so the attention was on us all the time, which was also nice.
Lovely Place. We enjoyed the 2 hours soo much. The hosts are extremely friendly and heartwarming.. i would recommend it to everyone who wants to have a special time in Miyajima. Thanks again for the perfect Time!
We had a most wonderful and enjoyable experience today dressing up in kimono and participating in tea ceremony and calligraphy lesson. I loved the kind staff, very patient and friendly and always making sure we were enjoying ourselves. Taking photos in the garden was fun and left us with great memories. Tea ceremony was lovely and calligraphy lesson was also very nice (you get to take your work home as a souvenir). The whole place is a bit out from the touristy hustle bustle, so feels authentic and pleasant. The ladies who were there today truly made us feel like their special guests. The booking process online was easy and efficient. The photos taken by staff were sent to me already the same day. I visited with 2 teen sons (usually not so easy to please) and they also had a blast.
We had a magical time dressing in beautiful Kimonos and adorning our hair with accessories. The result was absolutely stunning as we had photos taken in their beautiful Japanese garden. We learned so much about the tea ceremony including the making of Matcha tea. The calligraphy was wonderful and the result will look lovely framed. I bought a beautiful summer Kimono and Obi there as well! This was the most magical Japanese experience and not to be missed!!
Amazing! Everything I didn’t know I needed in an activity. We did the calligraphy and tea ceremony workshop. Was so much fun being dressed in kimonos and doing a mini photo shoot before the rest of the activities. This is really good value for money and I will be recommending to everyone I know travelling to Japan in the future!
This experience was one of my top favorites during my trip to Japan. Our three hostesses were very kind and welcoming (And they spoke English too). They helped dress us in the beautiful kimonos that we had chosen and they had hair accessories to complete our looks. After a photo shoot in the garden, we participated in a tea ceremony. Matcha tea, yum! The calligraphy lesson was fun too. We practiced how to paint Chinese characters and also write our names in Japanese. Overall, we had a great time and really loved every moment at okeiko Japan!
The ladies that offer this experience are phenomenal. They patiently catered to our desires for numerous photos and joked alongside us. They were laid back, friendly and more than accomodating when our session ran close to an hour past their closing time. The kimono experience was really fun and you can do an amazing little photoshoot in the gorgeous garden they have. Once we finished with that, we did a beautiful little tea ceremony complete with lovely, traditional sweets and the opportunity to try your hand at making Matcha! Then we practiced some calligraphy which involved lots of laughs and great conversation (In English and Japanese!) If you choose to pay for this experience I promise it is well worth it!!
There is no better place to experience all 3 of these staples of Japanese culture - Kimono, Tea Ceremony and Calligraphy. Honestly, when researching places to do these, I thought Okeiko was too good to be true but it exceeded expectations. Rather than prancing around with an expensive-to-hire Kimono in order to take pictures in touristy spots, my boyfriend and I got to enjoy our Kimono's during our activities and really appreciate their loveliness. The staff were super informative and the lady who led our tea ceremony was very careful in explaining the meaning behind this ritual. It was truly a worthwhile experience conducted in a secluded spot that made it all the more amazing - even if it turns out I am useless with a calligraphy brush!
The staff at Okeiko Japan are wonderfully patient and kind! We went in a group, but they managed to see to everyone quickly and had the rotation of calligraphy/tea ceremony planned very well so that nobody was idle for too long. The explanations of the activities were enough to give insight and background information, but not so detailed as to overwhelm novices to different Japanese cultural traditions. Their attention to detail in caring for visitors' comfort (e.g. providing chairs for the tea ceremony) was also greatly appreciated. The only thing to be careful of is that the location is in a residential neighborhood away from the tourist side of Miyajima, so when visiting, you should take care to be quiet and not disturb the local residents, as it may cause trouble for them and/or Okeiko Japan.
I brought some visiting family members to Miyajima for the day and this was one on the top of our to do list. The ladies working were friendly and gracious hosts. The kimonos are beautiful and the calligraphy class was fun. They allowed for time to take pictures in our kimonos in their beautiful garden. Following this we took part in a traditional tea ceremony where they showed and explained the proper procedures and then we were given the opportunity to make our own tea. It was a great afternoon activity and something worth doing while you're on Miyajima.
We had a great experience at Okeiko! The staff was so friendly and welcoming! This is a must do if visiting Miyajima or Hiroshima!!
My sister and I went for the tea ceremony and calligraphy sessions. Our mother came along, but did not participate. The kind people at Okeiko Japan allowed her to sit with us and watch as we did the activities in full kimono outfits. The experience was incredibly informative and fun. And the people there made us feel very comfortable so if you're worried that you don't know the code of conduct for a tea ceremony, do not be discouraged. It is not expected, and they will help you. This was one of the highlights of our trip and a really positive experience.
It was an excellent Japanese experience. We enjoyed the tea ceremony and found the calligraphy hard to get 'right', of course, but worth the effort , all dressed in traditional japanese garments.
