Helsinki Walking Tour With A City Planner

Our guided Emek was awesome! Touring with a city planner was ideal. He was so well versed on many topics from the history of the city, the politics of the country over the centuries, and most anything we asked about. This was probably our favorite tour of the trip!

For a easy pace and truly incredible insight into Helsinki and its history and culture With the chance to stop off at one of the local markets for a great coffee and local treat You instantly felt welcomed and encouraged to ask as many questions and engaging conversations were easy We had the best time and without a doubt the best walking tour we have ever had Highly recommended

Emek was an amazing guide. His knowledge of all things Finnish, from history, politics, life in Finland and Helsinki in general was very extensive and he showed us a side we would not have known if we did not take this tour. He explained all the different architecture and why things were built as they were and why. He finished off taking us to the Central Library which is a must if you go to Helsinki. It is a wonderful concept that needs to be developed in more places for their residents. I world highly recommend this tour and Emek as a guide 100%.

Our guide Emmick was a very personable, knowledgeable person. He gave an excellent overview of Helsinki history while walking around key downtown Helsinki places, for example the Plaza. He was very good at entertaining and answering questions. The only thing I would be a bit critical about is that there was little discussion or explanation of the actual planning aspects of Helsinki. I had hoped to learn more about historical as well as current planning in downtown Helsinki.

My wife and I took actually 2 tours with Emek in August 2025. One was the general walking tour and the other was the architectural tour. Both were amazing. Emek was incredibly knowledgeable. His tours were jam-packed with a stunning amount of information. He made these tours entertaining and inspiring. At times he was very serious and at others would speak about little funny idiosyncrasies of some places along the way. One of the best stops on the tour was the central library where we spent a fair amount of time. He made us want to have such an amazing place in our city (New York). We always think the Big Apple has the biggest and the best of everything, but this library sets an entirely different standard for public venues and Emek’s tour brought it to life for us. We both wholeheartedly recommend taking several tours with him.

This was a great experience... Helsinki is filled with magnificent buildings. Emek showed us how the political influences of Sweden and Russia were evident in the style of the buildings of different periods, giving us an enlightening picture of the history of Finland.

Emek has an encyclopedic knowledge of Helsinki, Finland, and the region in general. Also, a great sense of humor. Emek had narratives to tell but handled every comment and question fully. We enjoyed the tour immensely and recommend unreservedly.

Tour starting point was easy to find and we had a small group of American and Australian tourists. Emek is so knowledgeable about Helsinki! He tells you a lot of the history of the city to start out and then shows you some of the famous Finnish architectural landmarks. We learned quite a bit about the library culture in Helsinki with a stop at the gorgeous public library. Emek is available to ask any questions you have about the city or Finland. Truly a fascinating tour!

A fun, friendly, and incredibly informative tour with a great guide who can talk about just about anything you might be interested in! This tour made me seriously want to move to Helsinki.

I highly recommend Emek’s tour of Helsinki. He is very knowledgeable about Finnish history, culture, and politics, and delivers a lot of information about both Helsinki and Finland more broadly with personality and wit. I enjoyed the fact that it was a small international group of travelers with lots of interaction between both Emek and the guests and among the guests. The tour stays within the central district of the city but covers a lot of content over three hours. It was very conversational and flexible rather than highly scripted. Probably the best tour of this sort that I have ever taken.

I cannot praise this walking tour with Emek highly enough. His extensive knowledge of the city and of Finland, both past and present, provided a depth to our visit that we would never have had otherwise. Emek's open and engaging personality, and the small size of the group, made the experience not only incredibly informative but also really fun. The three-plus hours just flew by. A city planner doing a tour is absolutely genius! One of the best tours I've ever been on. Emek has a wealth of information and presents it in such an interesting way with his perspective as a city planner. The tour is perfectly paced and you're able to ask as many questions as you'd like. Highly recommend!

The tour was outstanding. The guide is extremely well learned but not pedantic. The format is perfect (for me): small groups and informal chats allow for flexible and adaptable discoveries. We walked for a good 3 hours, taking very short standing breaks to let the guide answer our questions or discuss a place or topic. The path seemed improvised, adapted based on our interactions, but it flowed coherently. It is obvious that Emek knows his town, and he loves his town. I’d walk with him for days. A delightful introduction to Helsinki, a surprising and fascinating city. Highly recommended.

We had a wonderful morning learning all about Helsinki and Finland. My favourite stop was the library which I never would have thought to visit otherwise. Loved every minute. Guide was fantastic.

AMAZING!! A must do. Our guide was excellent, very knowledgeable, and friendly. Went to the most important sites and he knew a lot about it. Afterwards he even texted us restaurant recommendations, etc.

Our tour guide was excellent. He was a former lecturer at the university, spoke excellent english, and was extremely knowledgable about every topic we expressed interest in . He could address the history, cultural mores, Finnish language structure, political situation, etc. with equal ease. He was also extremely easy to be with and had a great sense of humor. We had a great tour of the city and came away with a much greater understand of the Finland.

We were not able to see the cathedral because it was closed so I feel like the guide was stretching time by talking at length about political opinions and unnecessary wordiness. If one of the main stops is closed, something else should be substituted. I also would prefer a local Finnish guide in Finland, but that is my fault for not reading the tour description close enough.

We were really impressed by Emek's deep knowledge of different subjects like history, geography and contempary politics. We asked him to focus a bit more on (geo)political aspects as we took the tour with a group of political scientists and advisors. He was really flexible and gave us a lot of insight in the city and it's context. I can highly recommend his tour to anyone visiting Helsinki!
