Itinerary
The statue of Tsar Alexander the 2nd in the center of the Senate Square, marks the start point of the tour. This is the most historical part of Helsinki, and some say the most beautiful - with it's Russian Neoclassic architecture. Here we can see the Helsinki Cathedral, the University of Helsinki, and a great viewpoint of the Senate Square for photos.
Following our visit to the Senate Square, our next stop is the White Helsinki Cathedral. Perhaps one of the most impressive buildings in Helsinki, it is also the most visited building. We will allow a little time to visit inside (providing there are no services or weddings), and we will allow time to take photos of this building so you have a souvenir to take home.
National Library of Finland is nestled in the very heart of the Senate Square, and has an impressive interior. This treasure trove of knowledge and culture, houses manuscripts, rare books and exhibitions. We will allow time to visit inside, if the groups aren't too big, and if the library is open (on week days). Otherwise we have photos of the magnificent interior to show you!
Our next stop is the Bank of Finland - where all central monetary deposits in Finland are held. From here, we have a connection that links us to World War 2, where we will discuss Finlands relationship with its military neighbours, friends and adversaries - both old and new.
Our next stop is the magnificent Relandersgrund Boat. This stop is more than just a boat, it has important historic connections to Helsinki's past. Great photo stop with views of Uspenski Cathedral, so get your cameras ready!
One of the most beautiful hidden districts of Helsinki, Katajonokka is the home of Art Nouveau buildings, in true Finnish National Romantic style. In fact, here we have the 2nd largest collection of Art Nouveau Buildings in Europe (after Riga in Latvia)
This Sauna stop has a great view of Kauppatori market stalls, our most central Sauna, and you can also take the boat to Suomenlinna from here. Follow our guides recommendations on places to visit after the tour.
Completed in 1868, the grand Uspenski cathedral towers over Helsinki with it's beautiful golden domes, and ornate interior. (subject to opening times) we will visit the cathedral, and take you inside to see what this beautiful architecture has to offer.
Our next stop takes us through Esplanadi park - also known as the "living room of Helsinki". This park is at its best in the summer where you will find locals sitting and enjoying the sun, but even outside of summer we can show you some great cafe recommendations, and also give advice on where to see some of the best Finnish Design.
From here will see the Central Railway Station - the place where you can take international trains around Finland, and the very heart of Helsinki. We can also take a stop next to the Ateneum National Art Gallery, which has beautiful Neoclassical Architecture.
Our final and End Point of the tour will show you several buildings, one of which we can go inside. We won't tell you what this building is yet, as it is a surprise! This district houses our Modern Architecture, which started from the early 1990s, through to 2017. The end point of the tour has a very special Library, "Oodi", which is the perfect place to visit immediately after the tour. You will find here a cafe, toilets, and lots of fun things to explore.

Eero (I think that was his name), was excellent. The weather was not good (light rain) but it did not matter and Eero took us into the dry when possible. We were only in Helsinki for the day and the tour was the perfect way to see the City and learn much history.
Guide, Maria, was very knowledgeable. She explained cultural highlights and the history of Helsinki. The total length of the tour was approximately 2.5 hours. I felt the value for the money was exceptional and was not disappointed. For my first time booking something like this through TripAdvisor, it couldn't have gone better.
Zack was an excellent guide—friendly, knowledgeable, and engaging. She gave us a great introduction to Helsinki and Finland’s history while walking us through the town. I learned so many new and interesting things about Finland that I wouldn’t have discovered on my own. This was a great walking tour to get familiar with Helsinki before exploring more on our own. Highly recommended!
Very interesting and knowledgeable guide. Really learned a lot about Finnish history. Would highly recommend
Stefan was very engaging in every story shared, and the tour was great. He definitely surprised us showing inside of the library place, and with the Helsinki tips!
Learned so much about the city and Finnish culture. Our guide was extremely friendly and knowledgeable.
Very good overview and story of the city. Eero was very engaging and made walk very enjoyable. It’s a free tour but you have booked through Viator no expectation of any tip.
Very informative and would highly recommend to understand the history of Helsinki. Our guide was very knowledgeable and pointed out all the wonderful sights.
Zach was a superb guide - one of the best we've had in various European cities. She was knowledgeable, humorous and passionate. The pace was great. The only slight annoyance (and this had nothing to do with the guide) was that we booked a paid tour and then found out we had been 'added' to a free tour, coincidently (?) covering exactly the same route and destinations! We weren't offered any form of refund although the amount we paid and tip we gave amounted to good value for what we received due to Zach's excellent tour.
Anastasia was a wonderful guide, very informative, friendly, and great to work with. There was a lot of ground to cover and a lot to absorb definitely worthwhile. This was a group tour so very favorable pricing.
This tour starts with a brief history of Finland and history of the buildings around senate square. We then travelled around the centre of the city and discovered plenty of interesting sights including harbour, markets and station. An excellent introduction to Helsinki in just over two hours.
Moons was an excellent guide. She obviously loves her job and the city. I would highly recommend this tour.
Highly recommended. Our guide was so good. He was very engaging and full of interesting and helpful information.
Casual paced walk with much information from the guide. Saw many highlights from the exterior, later went back to see more.
We enjoyed the walk with Anastasia. She gave an entertaining insight into life in Helsinki mixed with the history and current culture.
Eero gave us a fascinating, informative walking tour of Helsinki. We went back afterwards to visit the two cathedrals and take the ferry to the fort island. Thank you, Eero!
I loved this tour. I appreciated that our guide had a microphone and walked at reasonable pace. He was very knowledgeable and enthusiastic about Helsinki.
The guide was very good, knowledgeable and funny. We really enjoyed the walking thru this special places
Excellent tour. Lots of interesting info. The Library was a most interesting final stop. Made us appreciate the beauty of Helsinki.
Our tour guide Zach was amazing despite the rainy weather. She was fun, informative and enthusiastic. Her obvious passion for Helsinki was infectious. She took us to varied locations and had interesting tales to relate. One of the best tours we have ever done. Thanks Zach.
The guide was very friendly and knowledgeable. I learnt a lot, I spent days after researching. Helsinki itself really doesn't look that great though.
Moona was so wonderfully friendly and you could just tell that she loves sharing Finnish history and culture and cuisine with her guests. I run a tour company and would 100% hire her.
A wonderful way to know the city historical background. Noona was very knowledgeable and engaging. She also recommended places.
This “compamy” is in fact charging for what is an amazing free local tour - simply Google free red umbrella toyr. The sweet guide Zach did a wonderful job. Out of 30 guests I was the only person to have bern scammed and to pay for this tour. The guides actually work for tips!! I was so embarrassed that I had paid €25 I tipped the same amount to Guide for the hard work. Highly recommend the tour, but avoid buying through this operator. Tip your guide and enjoy beautiful Helsinki!
Great experience with Selja. Most informative. A good tour& she shared some Finnish licorace to show us Finnish treats.
Eero did a fantastic tour. He was friendly, knowledgeable, gave us alot of great info and encouraged questions. His English was impeccable. So glad that I went on this tour and had Eero as our guide!
Marius was an excellent witty informative guide who gave a great tour round the key sites and helped us get a good feel for the city during our day trip.
This is a GREAT tour - we saw the whole city, learned a lot and it was a great walk! But it all starts with the tour guide and he was the BEST! Our tour guide was EERO - and he was personable, FULL of wisdom and history of Helsinki. This tour was very informative - we visited most of what was listed on the tour schedule and saw a few stops that were not. But this certainly was a great tour - and a lot of this is because of our guide - EERO! Well worth the price of admission - this is a very affordable tour!
Moona is an excellent tour guide! She has an upbeat, cute personality and maintained enthusiasm all the way through.
Marius was brilliant as our guide and this is a great way to not only orientate you around the main sites but to also get a sense of the history and culture of Finland. Highly recommend but please do not see it as cheap way to get a guided walking tour, Marius gave us nearly 3 hours of his time and that should be considered in the tip.
Anastasiia was a fantastic tour guide! I learned so much about the history of the city! I highly recommend!
Anastasia had excellent knowledge of Helsinki and a very appealing cadence to her speaking.
Excellent guide . Very friendly and a good sense of humour who was very knowledgeable and informative Highly recommend this tour
Good pick up. The guide was very knowledgeable.
Alberto was very interesting . Learnt lots about Finnish culture and life. A bit light on history for us . No reference to Finland knowingly cooperating militarily with Nazi Germany, this cooperation had moral and political consequences!- they handed over Soviet POWs to the Nazis and the Finnish Jews.
There is a fair amount of walking but it is so worth it. We walked all over the city and to the waterfront.
Marius is an exceptional guide. A wonderful 2 1/2 hour tour. First time to Helsinki.. what an education.. informative, funny, charming, warm. Thoroughly deserved 5 *
Expected to learn about architecture and moomins and food. We were treated to too much military history and details of the guide's national service. Walked away before end of tour as after 90 mins were only 200m from the start . Need to ask tour members what they are wanting to learn/ see on the tour.
Anastasia was very enthusiastic and had great information. We saw all of the highlights of Helsinki and more. Loved her smile.
Tour guide, Zach, was excellent. Our tour numbers were small so our tour was combined with a free tour which meant we had almost 40 people instead of the “small” group we had booked. Rather disappointing as the large group made it more difficult.
Our guide Fabio was really knowledgeable not only with the history of Finland and Helsinki, but also with recommendations for enjoying the city more. He didn't rush us and was patient with each member of the group. Brilliant tour.
FINLAND HAD SO MUCH HIDDEN HISTORY. Our guide was very informative. Small group which made you feel you were on a private tour
Marius was superb and informative. The company was very flexible and accommodating
We thoroughly enjoyed our tour with Alberto. He wax very a knowledgeable and enthusiastic tour guide. We highly recommend this experience - very interesting and fun!
Anastasia was a very friendly and pleasant guide full of knowledge of Helsinki. Lots of tips of where to go afterwards and eat or drink. Higly recommended!
Zach was wonderful! Very knowledgeable and easy to understand. Shared entertaining insights.
Lovely guide and a good way to get to know more about Helsinki! I appreciated the recommendations from the guide.
A really great way to see the city & hear some of the history & interesting facts. Definitely worth doing. Takes a couple of hours. Our guide was absolutely lovely & answered our questions. She took the time to chat to us individually which was really nice.
Eero was a great guide! All the information he shared was interesting and helpful to better understand Helsinki and Finland as a whole. He responded very well to questions and kept the group engaged (and we were a big group). Highly recommend!
