We enjoyed the castle tour, it was a deeper dive than we were expecting. I was surprised we also had to pay for the €11 per person funicular ride given how much we had already spent. Glad it was a nice day so we could see the rest of the city (and France) so we could talk about some of the surrounding buildings, too. We had about an hour to see a couple things in the city: student prison, old bridge, and our guide pointed out some insider restaurants and shops. Showed us where to take the best photos and took some of us too!

Itinerary
We shall start our tour in the Old Town, the heart of the city life. Here, experience the wonderful combination of old and new buildings, narrow streets, market squares, arts, history, science, shopping, eating and relaxing. The main road through the Old Town is one of the longest pedestrian zones in Europe and is where most of the shopping is centered.
Have a look at the Church of the Holy Spirit, the most famous church in Heidelberg, one of the few buildings in the city to survive the many wars during the past centuries.
Pass by the local University and learn how it was founded in 1386 on instruction of Pope Urban VI, Heidelberg is Germany's oldest university and one of the world's oldest surviving universities. Don’t miss a visit to the Student Jail, where students were arrested for minor offences and still allowed to attend class, under the condition of returning here after.
In the second part of the tour we will visit the Castle of Heidelberg.

Great walking tour of the castle and city. The perfect way to learn about the city and its amazing history.
Take in every suggestion the guide has to offer. It's a great area and worth taking ia all in. Be ready to walk...
This was a good tour overall, but it felt expensive for what was included. Our guide, Ise, was friendly, knowledgeable, and spoke very good English. She explained the history of Heidelberg and the castle well, including details about the Prince Electors and the famous giant wine barrel. The pace was comfortable and we had time to enjoy the views from the castle terraces. However, at roughly $370 for a 2.5-hour walking tour for two people, it was difficult to feel that the experience justified the price, especially since castle interior tickets were not included and we paid an additional €22 per person. Overall it was a perfectly pleasant and informative tour with a knowledgeable guide, but the cost felt high compared to other walking tours we experienced during our trip.
Great tour, very informative. We learnt a lot and enjoyed the personal experience, we got a lot of our questions answered.
Ilse was extremely knowledgable about Heidelberg, and really showed how much she loves the city. The castle portion of the tour was spectacular
Ekki was a very knowledgable guide. He gave us a wonderful historical tour of the city. A few tangents here and there, but his stories really highlighted the importance of Heidelberg in world history. We had some little ones with us who got a little bored, so be prepared for it. Our favorite part was the castle. Wonderful views of the city and valley.
Fantastic tour. Olga, our guide was extremely knowledgeable and friendly. Very glad she gave us our tour. Seeing the castle, and learning about its construction and occupants was interesting. And walking around the old town, with a the little nuggets of history was fun. Gave us pointers on restaurants to try, which maybe to avoid, and even showed us which bus to get back on to get to our hotel.
Ilse gave a great tour of the Old City including the castle and the bridge. Her knowledge of the history of Heidelberg and specific buildings helped educate us and provide a much deeper understanding of the history of the area.
This tour is advertised as a private tour, and it was the four of us and our guide, Anna, who was knowledgeable, spoke excellent English, and was fun! We walked through the Old Town a little, the lines for the castle tram were short (so we were able to spend a good amount of time up there), and then we walked again through Old Town into the two churches, and then ended at the bridge. ANNA WAS FANTASTIC!
Excellent private tour of the castle and city of Heidelberg. Our guide, Anne, was fantastic! She had so much knowledge to share, was very pleasant to be with and spoke beautiful English. Highly recommend this tour!
This was a wonderful tour hosted by Ilse, a very kind and knowledgeable local guide. Ilse's stories brought the rich history of Heidelberg to life. Things we would have passed by on our own, not knowing what they were, became part of our appreciation of Heidelberg because Ilse pointed them out for us. We enjoyed the afternoon walking down interesting small side streets, learning the history of the Schloss and all of its eras, understanding what the pretzels carved into the church walls represented, and getting a very good restaurant recommendation. It was a great tour, thank you Ilse!
We had a group of 5 adults and 6 kids from age 10 down to 2 months. Our tour guide was Ines she was the absolute best we could've gotten. She was so patient and kind with our group and our children. She was super knowledgeable and tailored our tour to our group. She spent her own free time with us as well trying to get some food. We loved her and our tour in heidelberg
Loved the tour. Our guide was patient, well-informed, and kept us entertained/interested. We had a great time.
Palace grounds and history was very good - Anne did a great job immersing us in Heidelberg past and present - great job showing us other places to explore in our own later - thx
Fantastic!! Guide was very good and we walked up to the scenic point . She was very well informed. Extremely polite!! Great English and we really got a good feel for everything.
Anne was an amazing tour guide!! She is extremely knowledgeable about everything Heidelberg. She was extremely pleasant and we had a excellent time with her learning about the castle, old town, and everything in between. I would take this tour again in a heartbeat and would definitely ask for Anne to be my tour guide. Thank you Anne and Viator!
Paid $322 for a two hour walking tour that included a visit to the castle. The tour only lasted a little over an hour and we had to pay an additional $18 euro to visit the cancel once there. Definitely not worth the money
Our group of 8 had an amazing private tour of Heidelberg with our guide Ekki. He was extremely knowledgeable about the history of the area and the information he shared far exceeded our expectations. This tour was a highlight of our two week trip to Germany.
Interesting and informative tour highlighting the contributions of key historical figures to Heidelberg's evolution. The inside of the castle is a must to fully appreciate past grandeur and historical context.
Ekke was loaded with history, was engaging and conversation thought provoking! The Castle must not miss. I highly recommend it!
Ekke was great - his knowledge of historical and political history was extensive. He did a wonderful job of giving context for places and people. Ekke’s language skills are also great - German, English and French. He’s kind and caring.
Fantastic and informative tour. Our guide (Mr. Munk was so knowledgeable and friendly). We would do this again.
It was our first time in Heidelberg and Birgit made our tour absolutely amazing! She was a phenomenal guide and gave great insight into Heidelberg. Touring the castle was essential and a must-do for anyone going to Heidelberg. Would definitely recommend!
