Itinerary
Enjoy the flexibility of a GPS-enabled audio tour of Heidelberg’s Altstadt whenever you’re ready to take it. Erin McGann, history geek, writer, and Heidelberg resident, takes you on a walk through the winding streets of the picturesque Old Town. Erin lets you in on some local secrets including stories about the dramatic floods that plagued the residents for hundreds of years, the secrets of the German street names, what the pretzel carvings on the Church of the Holy Ghost mean, why there is a student prison, and stories about the residents of the famous castle. Download the tour, pop your phone in your pocket, and let this enthusiastic Heidelberger resident take you around the town she loves.
The center of the Altstadt, the Marktplatz, or Market Square, is where you can sit outside in the summer and enjoy a coffee, or a Glühwein in December at our gorgeous Christmas Market. There’s a lot of history in this square, and we’ll do a full circle on the audio tour.
The Alte Brücke, or Old Bridge, is a bit of a misnomer. Built in 1877, it’s quite young compared to the rest of Heidelberg. Depending on who you ask, it’s either the 11th or the eighth bridge on that spot. Floods are a common experience in Heidelberg’s history, and if you know where to look, you can find the marker for the highest flood ever to hit the town.
The Student Prison, or Student Karzer was an important part of student life for over 135 years, from 1778 to 1914. No, students weren’t put in prison for bad marks, but what they did get up to was driving the town residents crazy. So much so, the phrase ‘letting the pigs loose’ in German is a local idiom for getting drunk and rowdy.
This square has been a meeting place for Heidelbergers since the 1500s, but the name Kornmarkt only came about in the 1600s. The red stone and white building here is a side of the Stadthalle, or the City Hall.
A landmark in Heidelberg, this church holds the keys to some fascinating stories about our historic town. Why are there doors halfway down the building? Have the shops under the eaves always been there? Find out more as we circle the building in the audio tour.
Jesuitenkirche is the main Catholic church in Heidelberg. The variegated red stone is from the Neckar valley quarries, and it practically lights up from within in the evening light. The construction began in 1712, and finally finished with the addition of the tower in 1872.
The Castle is located only halfway up the hill. You can take the old funicular, with its 100-year-old wooden carriages, up the last leg to the summit. There are incredible views over the city, many nature trails, a falconry open to visitors, and a small amusement park for children. You can, of course, make the climb yourself.

Was cool as the guide followed you virtually and knew where you were standing. Simpler than a person as well
Great overview of the old city. The guide was easy to use and informative. There was flexibility to move quickly or take more time to stop and reflect.
Good self guided tour, it was clear when to stop & restart. We had one audio on a phone between 4 people which was adequate.
While I do enjoy a guide-led tour and that is my first choice, if time is no object. For Heidelberg we simply needed a guided tour so that we could understand some of the history and the historical buildings. We took a chance on the self guided tour and I would SO do it again if I didn’t have time for a full tour. Technically the tour was great - kept up with us while walking and, since we used our own earbuds, very easy to hear. A fab experience!
We appreciated the recording stopping at the sights and directing us to where to go next! The information shared was meaningful.
Monotone uneventful very basic city tour. We found it dull and looked up way more about the city sites when we got home. Save the money and read the info online.
This is a great option if you have a couple of hours and want an overview of highlights of Heidelberg. Very easy to use and the app lets you know if you’ve wandered off course (which is easy to do as you get taken in by the sights). You can pause along the way to take in a bit more of the points and restart at your convenience. Highly recommend you break to go in to the Studenten Karzer and the museum. Note: this tour starts and Marktplatz!
Really enjoyable audio walking tour. Very easy to follow, didn't need to use map on phone once! Some great information and not too much detail which some tours give. I thoroughly enjoyed it and would recommend it for anyone wanting a short informative walk round the old town. Thanks Erin!
Very easy to understand and follow. I would have liked more information about the streets, castle and monuments and a GPS guide back to the starting point.
Very disappointed we abandoned using it because we couldn't start it from wherever you want it was limited to starting in the same place it needs to be flexible as the traffic through the castle is erratic. In addition too too much time to download. Basically a waste of money.
We took a 5:30 pm tour. Not as crowded. Not as hot. Our guide was great. It is a big climb up - so be prepared.
I had a little trouble when first using the app (Voicemap) but, once I figured that out, the rest of the tour was easy to follow. The tour was interesting and informative, without being too in depth.
The tour was pretty simple, but it was worth the small price. The narrator had obviously lived here, and had interesting tidbits and info to share. It also gets you through the Altstadt, which was what I wanted.
Can’t beat the price, maybe could have more content but not sure! Love the gps tracking to know when to talk. Add a portion in the tour to talk about other sites like the capital even if the listener doesn’t make the hike to the attraction so you can let them know if it’s worth the hike!
Easy self audioguide tour that enabled us to explore Heidelberg's highlights at our own pace. Inexpensive way to see the town area by the castle; recommend!
I had part of a day to spend in Heidelberg and was looking for a way to get an introduction to Heidelbert's Altstadt and see the highlights. This tour was exactly what I was looking. As others have commented, it is short, and I would have liked to know a bit more about some the sites on the tour, more history, context, etc. After the tour ended, I did go back for another look at some of the sites. For the price, I thought it was a good value. If I go to another city with an audio tour by VoiceMap, I'd be likely to download it. FYI: Make sure your phone is fully charged. GPS is a battery hog on my phone, and I found the battery on my older (2+ years) phone draining rapidly while on the tour.
This was my first time using a voice map tour and although I love the concept, especially as a solo traveler, I feel like this was less of an informative tour and more of a photo opp style tour. There wasn't really anything in the tour that I wouldn't have stumbled upon anyway. Certainly the price is reasonable but I could have done without as the information provided was mostly on signs anyway.
Interesting details that I would not have known otherwise. I did however pass by, on my own, many more squares, statues and historical sights that could have also been included since they were close by.
We did this tour and thought it was a nice introduction to Heidelberg. We got our beatings in the old town and learnt about the Falconry at the top of the hill. We thought it was cool and well priced.
My wife and I booked this tour online. We couldn’t find either address given. They never returned my call. Nothing delivered for the charges. Disputing charges with credit card.
Really enjoyed the walking tour. We went at our own pace and listened to the information several times if needed. It is easy to follow. My teenager loved it. Hope to do this again in the spring or summer. Beautiful town!!
This was our first audio tour with our four children 9,11, 13 and 15. It was a really great way to keep them all engaged and learning some history for around 40mins. Highly recommend!!!
If this is your first trip to Heidelberg Altstadt I recommend downloading this application and taking the self- paced tour early in your visit. It will enrich your stay here. The app is easy to download and the voice guide works like magic. When you walk to the proper spot, the voice narrative activates and you get interesting information. You then get directions on where to go for the next part of the tour. Go there directly, or dawdle it does not matter, the narrative activates whenever you get there. The tour took my wife and I roughly 40 minutes at a slow pace. Try this early in the morning before the crowds come and it will be a real pleasure.
Muy económica versus el valor que agrega las explicaciones virtuales. Nunca se corta y cuando se sigue un camino errado ávisa.
I liked the tour (between 3 and 4). Plus points: + Led in a short time to many sights, you have the feeling afterwards, you "know" the old town, because you have also walked a bit cross + Worked well technically + Not too long information per location + Easy to understand and good sound quality Minus points are only available for technology until you can start the audio tour on your phone: - You need to download an app and create an account confirming an email address - You get a receipt with lots of different codes on it (which are booking numbers), at the very bottom where you don't expect it is the correct code to enter into the app - The above costs time, nerves and battery charging. Buying a tour and starting right away is not possible. Attention: Since the tour works with accurate localization, it needs a lot of battery power.
Very nice and pleasant audio tour that does not take too long and still contains interesting information. It shows you the most famous, important and beautiful places in Heidelberg. Highly recommended! However, the phone should be well charged, as the tour had consumed a relatively large amount of battery for me.
You can download the tour in an easy way. You can then use it whenever it suits you. If you visit something on the way or sit on a terrace, you can then continue the route. Nice facts about Heidelberg.
