Excellent tour of the Big Island! Our guide, Kawika, was very personable and knowledgeable. We learned a lot and had fun doing it! Very small group so very interactive. Highly recommend!

Itinerary
Have you ever seen a beach with black sand? Because of constant volcanic activity, you'll find white sands and black sands on the island of Hawaii. Located on the southeastern Ka'u coast, Punaluu Black Sand Beach is one of the most famous black sand beaches in Hawaii. Located between the towns of Pahala and Naalehu in Ka'u, Punaluu Black Sand Beach's jet black shores are an unforgettable sight. Coconut palms fringe the upper edge of sand and you may also discover large Honu, (Hawaiian Green Sea Turtles), basking on the beach.
Visit an award winning 100% Kona Coffee Farm, with exclusive access, tasting and tour. (*Heavenly is closed on Sundays but we still go to another coffee farm of the guides choice!)
Drive through Historic town of Hilo.
We start with a wonderful lunch of your choice at the Rim Restaurant at the Historic Volcano House overlooking Kilauea's caldera! Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park protects some of the most unique geological, biological, and cultural landscapes in the world. The park encompasses the summits of the world's most active volcano. Tour the Park and the entire Chain of Craters Road from Summit to Sea.

Saddle Road, Hawaii, is considered among the most spectacular roads in the world. This is 55-mile drive of a chance of a lifetime experience. Hawaii’s Route 200 goes through all four of her climates – tropical forests, arid desert, lush grasslands and misty mountaintop fog. Between miles 19 and 23, you’ll see a few places with lava flows and young vegetation and trees. Near the road you can see where lava thickened and left the telltale mounds of a slowing flow. Just after mile 23, you’ll come close to a popular local landmark, Pu`u Huluhulu, which is an older Mauna Kea cinder cone, or kīpuka, and it’s surrounded by younger lava flows. At this point, you’re near the peak height for Saddle Road, about 1.25 miles in elevation – 6,632 feet. From here, you’ll continue through the volcanic aftermath of hundreds of thousands of years of lava activity as you head toward Belt Road, where you’ll eventually descend into Kona or Waikoloa.

I wish we would have done this tour first of our trip. Our tour guide Kawika was so knowledgeable of the island and had so many recommendations that we now want to work into our trip. Seeing the sights were amazing but the knowledge we gained on the trip was the best part.
The Hawaii Geo Tours was recommended to us by friends. We were not disappointed. The day we were supposed to go on the tour, a hurricane closed some of the roads and Volcano National Park. We easily rescheduled for a few days later. It was seamless. The tour itself was magnificent. Our guide, David, was great. He was extremely knowledgeable, relaxed, funny and flexible. He made the tour fun besides interesting. We highly recommend Hawaii Geo Tours. It is a must on the Big Island.
Fantastic trip. Great job by our tour guide. He added trip to farmers market to allow some of us to eat breakfast and others to shop. He was very knowledgeable and clearly explained duration for each stop and demonstrated key features for additional understanding
David….he was AWESOME! Very knowledgeable about the Island and its rich culture. Because of the impending Hurricane the day of our trip, he did the tour in reverse so we could get as much time at Volcanoes National Park before they shut down. He led the tour with humor, patience and so much knowledge! It was a trip that I, and my kids, won’t forget! Thank you David!
We had an amazing time. Grant was a wealth of knowledge and quite funny too! We loved the blacks sands beach, seeing the volcano and the lava tubes but Grant made it all go by quickly!
Dave is a fantastic tour guide. 10/10 experience. He really made an effort to show us the best spots on the island and explain the geography of it. We appreciated how passionate he is and the way he goes above and beyond.
Nice tour, learned a lot about volcanoes and island history. Tour guide and van was nice and comfortable/friendly. Would have appreciated more time within the park, at each stop. Also, would have appreciated stopping by the visitor center.
David was a wealth of knowledge and had a great sense of humor. He kept the tour interesting, playing trivia with the group during longer periods of drive time. Gave enough time at each location and was always welcoming questions. Great for any group (except maybe small children). Highly recommend.
David was an excellent guide. I felt like I was on a trip with family who lives here! He is so personable, knowledgeable and really wants you to have a great day! 100% Perfect
Amazing tour filled with excitement & intellectual/informative! David Human knew lot about Hawaiian culture, every moment was worth listening to him! The tour itself was smooth and filled with adventures!
Dave was a great tour guide! I was in a group of 9 which was a good size to spend the entire day with. It was a long day, but every stop was well thought out, informational and worth it.
Such a great way to see so many interesting things in a single day! David was amazing and shared an incredible amount of knowledge about the island, volcanoes, and everything in between. It was so nice covering so much ground and getting to enjoy all of it from the comfortable seat in the tour van vs trying to drive/park everywhere ourselves. We would definitely recommend this tour to anyone!
Our experience with Hawai’i Geo Tours was unforgettable, largely because of our guide, Zane. From the start, it was clear he genuinely loves what he does. Zane has a deep understanding of the Big Island and a gift for explaining it in a way that’s easy to follow and actually interesting. He didn’t just point things out—he connected the landscapes to the island’s volcanic history and ongoing changes, which made everything feel more meaningful. What stood out most was how every stop came with context. Whether it was lava fields, coastal views, or a black sand beach, he always had something insightful to share, including cultural details that added depth to the experience. Nothing felt rushed or generic. We also really enjoyed the visit to Heavenly Hawaiian. Zane walked us through the coffee process in a way that made the tasting even better. The coffee itself was excellent. Overall, this tour went beyond expectations. Zane made the island come alive, and we left with a much stronger appreciation for Hawaii than we would have on our own. Highly recommend
We went on an organized tour and would highly recommend that, the park is very big and it is so beautiful and our guide knew where to park and we ate lunch at Volcano House.
Was a very good trip around the island. Coffee plantation was an excellent surprise. Guide was very informative and provided some good tips for exploring on our own
This was our second time on this tour and it doesn’t get old. Zane and Erik are great guides. I highly recommend their tour.
Our tour guide Dave was awesome. We were able to see a lot of the island and spend time in the national park was well worth it.
As first timers to the island, this was an incredible trip. We had Eric then David as our guide. They both shared so much about the rock formations and the island in general, and could answer every obscure question we had. Logistically it was great to be collected from Waikoloa, rather than having to meet a tour in Hilo for an early morning departure. Our small group's first stop was Heavenly Coffee - amazing! We didn't know how coffee was made, and sampling the different coffees was the perfect pick-me-up to head onto the black sands beach (with fresh donuts), then the volcanoes. Highly recommend treating yourself to the cheeseburger for lunch. The island beef was delicious. The whole trip was well organized (they even had rain jackets ready to go when the weather turned), super informative, and wonderfully friendly. Looking at the serious lack of parking in Volcanoes National Park, we were glad we chose a tour, and even happier we'd had such a brilliant day with Hawaii Geo Tours.
David was a fantastic tour guide. He made the entire day very interesting, enjoyable, and we learned a LOT. I can’t say enough about him. If we could choose a tour guide for a future excursion, David would be our first choice. Thank you for a great day!! Wendell & Kris
David H. Was a terrific guide. He was the best tour guide we have ever encountered. He shared his knowledge of the island and volcano freely and the depth of his knowledge was incredible. He was positive and friendly with everyone. He had a show and tell about the different types of “souvenirs” he had collected from the volcano, small rocks, glass shards. We had the experience we wanted and we were very happy at the end of the day. He had a nice lunch planned for the group with snacks and drinks later in the afternoon. I would do it again. If you do nothing else on the island, take this tour. You will have spent your time wisely.
They cancelled our tour the day before the scheduled trip. We decided to just drive ourselves and saved $200 pp.
Zane picked us up early in a very nice small custom bus. His geological and island knowledge were amazing. The tour through Volcano Natl. Park was outstanding. It was basically 12 hours to go over much of the island. We've been on many guided tours around the world; this was one of the very best, and I highly recommend it. Thanks, Zane!
Zane is so knowledgeable and entertaining, safe driver as well! Highly recommend this company it was a full day of fun
During our tour we enjoyed wonderful insightful history about the island and Volcano facts…..excited to see the volcano and its smoke…..that in itself would still make this a great tour….just being there!!!!!!…BUT we were blessed to see Kilauea spew her “fountain”……all during a wonderful sit-down lunch…….Erik supplied us with flexible “stay and enjoy” time and gave us such interesting facts about what we were seeing! This will remain a “once? in a lifetime experience……..highly recommend this tour company……great communication and pick-up/return……
My husband and I took a Volcano Tour with Hawaii Geo Tours and it was such an incredible experience! We enjoyed the beautiful island & were educated way beyond our expectations! Zane is a retired geologist and has so much knowledge of the volcanoes, landscape and climate of Hawaii that it's amazing! (along with a lot of other fun facts) His life experiences and love of volcanoes contributed to everything he shared with us! I can’t imagine any other guide that would’ve been able to give us so much information about Hawaii! He was professional, knowledgable, friendly and willing to take photos and answer any questions that anyone had. It was a long day but so worth it if you want to see all the sights that Hawaii has to offer without having to plan out an itinerary of things to see and to drive to all of the sights. It was a small group and in a nice, comfortable and clean Mercedes van. Zane also provided lots of drinks and snacks to eat at the stops we made. We stopped at Heavenly Hawaiian coffee farm and we learned a lot about Kona coffee. We tasted 5 different varieties of Kona coffee, purchased some coffee beans in their gift shop and joined their coffee club too! The lunch at The Rim restaurant, which is also included in the price of the tour was the perfect stop instead of having to pack a lunch. We both enjoyed the Volcano Burgers with the added bonus of a view of the Kilauea caldera while we sat and ate. We went to Punaluʻu Beach which is a Black Sand beach and saw turtles, went to the Lava tunnel and made several other stops along the way! We even got to stop at a local farmer’s market and picked up a few gifts. Zane bought all of us a Hawaiian sweet, tiny banana to try too! (Not sure what the name of it was called) I would highly recommend going on this tour if you want to efficiently experience all that you can in a day and learn all about the island of Hawaii and it’s stunning volcanoes! It was one of the best tours we have ever gone on because of Zane! Book this tour! I promise, you won’t regret it! :)

I had an amazing experience one the Volcano Adventure Tour. David our guide was very knowledgeable about Hawaiian culture and history, he shared so many stories about the island and Hawaiian culture. The views were stunning. David really took care of our group, paying attention to details, asking guests if he could take pictures, calling each guest by name and checking in on us throughout the tour. I highly recommend this tour. You will see a great portion of the Big Island.
What an incredible day! Our guide was amazing and we even got to see the volcano erupting! Highly recommend.
Great day with wonderful people seeing many big island areas. David was a personable nice and knowledgeable tour guide. Van was clean & nice.
Unbelievable experience with Zane as our tour guide. As a geologist by trade, he was like a little kid in a candy shop, explaining everything to the group. We lucked out as Kilauea erupted earlier in the day. Zane showed us 6 hour old rocks, Pele's hair (Volcano Godess), and a world of other things we could not get on our own. This was, by far, the highlight of our trip!
Tour was amazing. Zane was fantastic. He was funny, full of information and generally a good guy. If I could rate it higher I would.
11 out of 10, no notes! David was an awesome guide, very funny and knowledgeable - he also had some incredible recommendations for other things to do locally and on some of the other islands (that restaurant recommendation was PERFECT and I'm definitely changing my Maui plans based on his comments!). Communication was great all around and the whole day was super low stress: a great way to get introduced to the area, and learn cool stuff about the geography /geology while also seeing some incredible sights.
Great tour! Our guide, David was great and very knowledgeable about the island! Definitely worth the money for 10 hours!
The guide, David Humans, was amazing. Relaxing day on the tour buys with great stops, well paced throughout the day. Learned a lot and had a great time!
Our tour guide Zane was so knowledgeable on not only volcano but also Hawaiian history. If you want smaller sized, customized tour with tons of information about volcano's I definitely recommend this tour
Excellent guide and tour. Our guide was very polite and knowledgeable about the areas we visited. Very good overall experience.
So many times, my husband and I will go off and do our own thing instead of choose a tour, but this tour with Dave was exceptional!! He was so knowledgeable and even made the longer drives enjoyable, keeping us engaged the whole time. We loved everything about the day, from the views to the winery, to dinner overlooking Pele - the only thing that would have made it better was to be there a few hours later when she finally decided to let loose! 10/10 would recommend and do again!
It was so informative and very fun! Our tour guide was upbeat , positive, and very knowledgeable. I learned so much about the Big Island.
What a wonderful experience! Our tour guide David was very knowledgeable and friendly. The whole process run smoothly, we really had a great time.
Knowledgeable tour guide, funny and caring. The coffee farm , turtles , volcano , lava tubes , waterfalls……. Etc were all beyond amazing. A must do !
Good tour that highlighted some important points on the island. Specifically, the Volcano National Park is a must see if you’re visiting the Big Island. We traveled 250+ miles which made the day very long.
We had an amazing time with this tour. David was a very knowledgeable guide and made our overall experience very pleasurable. Highly recommended.
our guide, scott, was a phenomenal resource. Filled with knowledge about culture, local activities, and nature. He really brought the volcanoes, and the people alive. most important, he was able to adjust the timing of some of our events so that we were able to see the Kilauea active eruption that had just started hours before and concluded about an hour after we saw it.
Thank you Zane! One of the best tour guide ever. The passion he has for his company and the knowledge was amazing. I liked how Zane is so knowledgeable on the area, and the volcanos. Gave all the information he knew about the island and area we were traveling on. He basically covered everything that I wanted to know plus more. Thank you again!
Our tour guide knows everything!!!! He was amazing and it really was a great full day tour. We saw so much in one day we decided to just relax and hang by the pool the next day.
Our guide and driver David was excellent! Very, very informative. The drive was long, but very scenic and beautiful
Zane took us on a full tour of the island. Although, primarily focused on the Kilauea volcano, we spent time at a boutique coffee grower's farm and tasting room, the Punalu'u black sand beach, a lava field at the shore and several spots in the town of Hilo. Zane is a very affable fellow and a long-time resident of the Big Island. As a result, he provided plenty of entertaining historical, cultural and historical narrative throughout the tour. Given that his occupation for many years was as a geologist, his knowledge of the volcano and the geologic formation of the island was superb. I highly recommend taking his tour.
Wonderful all day tour with Zane our tour guide who took us to multiple locations, including coffee farm, black sand beach, lunch at restaurant overlooking the volcano, lava fields and cave, waterfall and farmers market in Hilo. Zane was very informative about the island and the volcano. The icing on the cake was that we got to see the volcano erupting. So cool!
This is the second time I have done this excursion and both times the tour guide was Eric who is co-owner of the business. He is a “rock” star (pun intended). Extremely knowledgeable about the island geology and well versed on island history! This excursion is well worth the money!! PS The tour van is a high end vehicle with very comfortable seats!
